Since the schedule isn't up yet and looks like it might not be for a while yet, I'll ask here: Are we getting 2 showings again this year, and will it be in 2 rooms or just one?

Thanks!

This is kind of two questions. I know the schedule folks have tons of things to juggle, no biggie. However, my question is, do the schedule people intend for there to be events this year prior to pre-reg/early-reg opening at 7? Or are any events for Thurs starting after reg opens?

Will badges be mandatory for con stuff Thursday? I know in prior years it sometimes hasn't been depending on scheduling and last year's power outage.

Thanks!

My understanding is that the judges look at all the videos then decide which ones make it to the final rounds. Do they view the final entries a second time and score them, or does all judging take place at once?

Also, is it possible to post a tally of entries per category? It'll be nice to know how much was submitted by the hard deadline this year. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to these answers too. Especially the tally.

Will there be a meet and greet this year? I tend to think not, but...

At-con Reg? On Thursday? Bwah??

And do the at-con hours include pre-reg pickup? So I can't pick up my badges until 7 pm?

The FAQ still says only pre and early can pick up on Thursday, so I think something's mismarked here... though I'm surprised as much as you are if you can only start picking up your badge at 7pm...

So we have until tomorrow to submit?

Yesterday @ 11:59pm/midnight was the last day to submit. His post just means they'll be catching up with their confirmation emails since I imagine they got flooded with last minute entries.

Looks like turning Experimental into Experimental/Trailer has really brought out entries in droves! I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with... it's been too long since we've had a trailer category.

If you've got the time, is there any chance you could post the numbers of videos received that made it in for the soft deadline? It'd be enlightening to see how many come in at the last possible minute and how many have the 2-point "edge".

Looking forward to it!

Hi everyone,
We will be posting the aforementioned updates tomorrow night as well as catching up on all the most current notification emails. If you have sent in your submission(s) but have not gotten an email yet, you will by tomorrow night. Cheers!
#89
Any chance you'll be doing the same thing as last year with the updates?

QuoteFirst off, we will be posting updates as we near the deadlines for this years contest regarding the number of entries received in each category. We will also be posting previous year's numbers so that you can better decide what kind of FMV entry to submit. This comes from the overwhelming number of outstanding submissions we had last year in the Drama category. Sadly, we did not have a long enough show to accommodate all the totally show worthy FMV's.

I dunno if this is the right section, but... do the food vendors on the concourse (not the convention center fare but like the boba place, psycho donuts, the ramen stand, last year's tai-yaki) and even the flying hands massage guy... do they rent that space via Fanime/ARG, or the con center itself? Just curious.
#91
I can't tell you if it's actually allowed by the convention center and the con to do it, but I can tell you that people do it regardless. There's a section of the convention center where people always seem to be hanging out playing instruments, and while they don't come around anymore, people like Ramen & Rice made their start at cons like Fanime playing for the public and asking for donations. If I had to make a wild guess, as long as you're not blocking traffic or being disruptive in some way that's upsetting people, it's probably ok.

/Insert con-official here who'll totally shoot all this down  ;D

Exciting!!

So, a couple questions. Is there still a judges choice award for each category, or has it been reduced to just judges best in show?

Is there still a scale of 3rd/2nd/1st for each category?

If no videos make the finals that fit those specialty awards, will they simply not be awarded?

Any prizes this year?

I guess that was more than a couple... :P Thanks!

Video Programming / Re: 2013 FMV Rules?

I'm also interested in the rules. Looks like the 2013 page just says they'll be posted later. Anyone know anything?

In Judge's. Mehh! I knew as soon as I posted i'd think of something. Oh well, I warned ya.

It's a long shot, but as a suggestion, i'd love to see the FMVs do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNO3bjZzsJ4&list=UUWed-s9N39fKckhsiLn68NQ&index=5&feature=plcp

I don't know if it's official con video or not (tho it looks official) but I think it would be a great way for finalists who can't make it to feel like they're a part of it (and hear how the audience responded) and just to relive the reactions, too. It's a 2nd best to being able to attend, I think.

Also, it was noted that some videos got moved to different categories this year. With that in mind, is there any chance of altering the judges' criteria to include a small point scale for how appropriate a video is in a category? I know the judges score is more about tech merit, but sometimes it feels like (especially in drama and comedy) that the videos that embody their category sometimes get overlooked because another vid is more cleanly edited, more shiny, what have you. I'm not saying a very-comedic-poorly-edited video should win for Judge's, but sometimes well edited comedy vids don't even place in judge's. I dunno. Just a suggestion. I can see how it could be good and bad, lol.

General Convention Discussion / Re: Necomimi ears.
June 02, 2012, 12:38:07 AM
Well, you could wait til prices go down, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon unless people get sick of theirs and want a quick sale. Ebay's are all around 190-200~, so Fanime was a steal in comparison. I really don't think they're reading temperature. Neurosky probably would've been found out as being bogus before now. But if you really wanted to test that, you could always have someone stand in a refrigerated room or run a few laps first, and see if performs drastically differently. I'm convinced, though. I don't think temps could spike significantly or quickly enough to trigger the ears when names are called or phones ring. Either way, it really is like a 21st century mood ring, lol.

Video Programming / Re: 2012 FMV Contest - Feedback
June 01, 2012, 11:14:09 PM
Here's my feedback, though I'll probably add more as we go along!

1. What did you like? What worked for you?

-The Ballots. I'm very happy to have the full ballots back with the song, anime, artist, entrant info, etc back. It makes the voting process easier.

-The overall length of the contest felt good, although the categories were unbalanced- but I know we're usually low on comedy and experi entries and moreso this year.

2. What did you not like? Is there anything you feel needs to be improved?

-Saturday issues. Hear me out here- glitches happen, like they did in the 2nd room, and I *REALLY* appreciated how quickly you ran over there to get things fixed. It's no biggie in my book. But is there any way to let the volunteer know what to do in a situation like that in the future? The volunteer in that room said nothing and just went on to load a DVD. I realize they're prolly not allowed to leave the room unattended but the people in that room (as far as I know.. I did leave after a minute to come get you) weren't told if that was the end of the contest, or if it would be fixed, etc etc. A simple "We'll get it running again in a sec, sorry folks, could someone get Jose/Tiffany?" would've been helpful. A lot of people walked out- I think putting on the DVD with no further information almost made it seem like the contest was over.

3. What would you like to see from the show? Do you like animated shorts/trailers? Any ideas for prizes? What day would be preferred for the show? Stuff like that. Basically ANYTHING that comes to mind about ANYTHING related to FMV.

-An Audio Test. The audio on the first day was great, but on Saturday it had some notable problems (which I was happy to see were fixed later into the showing) but considering there's always at least half an hour where it's just the editors sitting around/people being seated, could you choose a video from the internet or a prior year or something with heavy bass and heavy treble to test the system before we get going with the actual viewing? Overall I think this year had the best audio of the years I've experienced- Friday, and Saturday in the 2nd room and the latter half of the first room had clear lyrics and gorgeous bass. But that period of time where it was buzzing was pretty unpleasant.

-A Trailer category, as proposed at the awards ceremony, would be fun. I'm interested to see what the overall changes made are. I know y'all always do, but please try to let us know as early as you can what to expect- I know at least some of us make videos specifically for Fanime and it'll be harder to start if we're wondering what the category switch-up will be.

-I think the current prizes are great. No need for changes there, IMO.

I'll probably post more later.

Thanks to Jose and Tiffany for running another great contest this year!

The Good:

-Pocket Schedules! I'm so glad to see these back. It made things much easier to find, though the format was a little difficult at times.

-The Dealer's Room and the Arcade seemed to be pretty good this year.

The Bad (though I will mention some good aspects):

-Registration. It's been said over and over again, but I don't care- I stood in it, so I'm going to complain about it. I stood in line on Friday to get my badge for just over 3 hours. While the line seemed to be moving more than it did last year on Thursday, it was MUCH longer. Thankfully the people in line that I encountered seemed well behaved and friendly (unlike last year, with a lot of line-cutting going on) but otherwise it was terrible. We missed screenings we wanted to see, barely got in to the dealer's room for 15 minutes before it closed. Like others have said, I would gladly pay a fee to have my badge sent to me OR to have the equipment improved/staff increased/whatever in order for the lines to be shorter and the technology more modern. I will note that once we got inside the registration area that the people there were really nice and extremely efficient. I'd barely handed over my paper and ID before my group's badges were handed over. It startled me how fast it was!

-Schedule mishaps/changes/access. The online/mobile schedule was said to be the most up to date, current schedule available, except that no links were made on the main fanime website to the schedule! And my phone didn't send me to the mobile site. So I had to go back to my room, find the programming books and look to see if there was a website listed for it. There was. But that's goofy. How hard would've it been to put up a news post saying "Here's the mobile schedule/online schedule!" on the main page, or twitter, or facebook, or SOMETHING? :/

Additionally, there were schedule mishaps that bothered the heck out of me. The programming booklet said that the FMV Awards were going to be at 5 pm, but the full information book (what's it called? the pretty big one that came in our bag) said 2 pm. I get the impression that the schedule was changed somewhere in development, but having the two official schedule/informational things say two different things was irritating. (Thankfully the coordinators were awesome and personally emailed me when I asked to inform me of the change.)

-Traffic/crowding. I personally think the lanes near Stage Zero do a great job- I remember the clusterblargh that was there in the years before those lanes, but the overall crowding around Stage Zero is dreadful. Can something be done to move the crowd to either side, at least? Sometimes during the big events it would be pushing back all the way into the lanes and make it almost impossible to get around.

-Pre-Reg. In the mini-schedule it listed pre-reg as STARTING at Noon. My plan was to swing by on the way back from the arcade, only to have the loudspeaker come on and inform us AT Noon that pre-reg had closed. This was extremely frustrating.

Overall, I think if big changes are made to the schedule, I think they should be posted on the main page- or a link should be on the main page with all changes attached to it. When I did finally find the mobile schedule I noticed that it listed some changes, but not all- such as pre-reg and the FMVs. One can't always make it to the info desk, especially when it's right next to the huge crowd that is Stage Zero.

Overall:

I will most likely return to Fanime next year. I'm a fan of the con overall, but this year was definitely a disappointment. I sincerely hope something is done to provide relief to the lines next year. I was relieved to hear that other conventions have found ways to alleviate the length and time spent in the lines, because I'm sure Fanime can follow suit. Also, I know that our complaints are always listened to and usually acted upon, so I hope that this upcoming year is no exception.

I'll take a look around and see if I can find any that you haven't located yet, but you have the wrong one listed for "Chosen". It's not available online yet... I have some tweaks to do.  :)

Edit: Your listing for "Welcome to the Pirate Age", "The Great Escape" (you might want to use the link listed below the video for the sub-less version), "The Red Letter", "Who Needs Enemies", are correct. "Say Goodbye to Yesterday" isn't, it had multiple anime (not just Naruto). I think the Di Gi Dubstep one is right. (I doubt there's many Di Gi videos with Skrillex...)
#99
Depends. If you can't find their videos on youtube or animemusicvideos.org, you could always try posting here. A lot of editors were viewing the forums leading up to the contest. Also, a lot of editors may be on animemusicvideos.org but just haven't posted their current videos yet- you could try finding them through there, once the full finalist/winners information is posted. What videos are you looking for?
#100
They're never uploaded onto Fanime- I imagine a combo of space constraints and legal issues. Try checking Youtube, too. Some people don't upload their vids until they've finished the con circuit, either, so make sure to try again later.
