General Convention Discussion / Re: Attenance Numbers

- People who don't buy badges
I wouldn’t count these in the official attendance.
But I bet there are thousands of unbadged attendance. It does count towards maximum occupancy numbers though

Exhibitions
 - I know it's a convention and not a trade show, but the small industry presence and lack of exhibitions other than a sponsored panel seems to maintain a "small con" feel unless that's what you are going for.

I actually second this. I do want sponsors and industry presence from anime, distribution, video game, media, etc companies, so that Fanime becomes more than just a hangout. Fanime has grown up and shouldn't maintain the 'small con' feel anymore. Talk to people from Funimation, Sega, Capcom, Crunchyroll, Viz, Nintendo, YouTube, etc so that they can be part of this. More convention exclusives.

Also, have more of a promotion and marketing presence before the con. There are usually signs plastered over places like SF Japantown and libraries. The FanimeCon light rail was fun to see, but I don't think it helped with promotions. Which is why the industry presence is important, (example) where Sega can promote themselves being at Fanime with demos of their new game on Facebook and magazines. It fits the demographic they are going for.

With over 27,000 attendants, maybe also use a professional event planning company for issues like crowd control, signage, promotions, marketing, social and industry presence, and other things.

Take WWE Wrestlemania Axxess for example:

Serious Business / Re: Is Fanime worth going to anymore?
« on: June 02, 2015, 06:04:21 PM »
For me, it's not about patrolling and controlling badges, but having the badge worth something. The most I've seen of badge patrol are for dealers room and gaming room, both of which additional money is needed for purchases.

I get that it's a public place, but much of what Fanime has to offer does not require a badge. If all you do is stay outside for cosplayers, or even watch everything on Stage Zero, you kinda wasted your reg money. Unless the paid sections of Fanime blows everything out of the water of awesomeness, I don't want to feel gypped that most things were free. One thing that may help is to have the arcades on Free Play apart from the prize catchers.

YouTube guests, especially the gamer ones! Markiplier, Game Grumps, JonTron, ProJared, PeanutButterGamer, Completionist, etc... Imagine their panels!

General
Crank up the fans and A/C. It may be me, but it got really hot and hard to breathe in many rooms. Especially the gaming room, artist alley, and main convention center area.

Cosplay Spectacular
Cosplay Spectacular was not in the program guide aside from a small square in the 'at-a-glance' page. The show itself had a very low attendance than what I'm used to seeing. Also, their sticker ticket system didn't really work, because of the low attendance; anyone just walked in and sat anywhere. I get that there's no more Cosplay Linecon, but at least fill the Civic.

Arcade
Most of the arcades were the same systems for the past several years. Maybe more of a selection and multiplayer co-op games, like Simpsons, X-Men, Daytona USA 8-player. At least, revamp the arcades selection. (example: California Extreme)

Registration
Don't change anything!

I hate to bring up this thread again, but I want to make a point.

What's the difference of the badge vs no badge? Many of the events at Fanime does not require a badge, such as cosplay gatherings, Stage 0, and outside atmosphere. Anyone can walk around the convention center, hotels, and anywhere outside without a badge and still have the same enjoyment of the convention without paying $60+ for a badge.

I'm always going to pre-register for future Fanimes because I am supporting this event that I grew up with, but I want to feel like that I got all of my registration money worth and not have the same experience if I didn't register.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Fanimecon morning/evening group run?
« on: June 01, 2015, 04:53:00 PM »
You know, this is the perfect Day 0 event, as it frees up space during the day for campers and allows for set up. Imagine, the run, then badge, then swap meet.

Clockwork Alchemy to FanimeCon Cosplay Run!

The Guadalupe trail runs from the convention center to the airport (Doubletree & Clockwork)....how convenient

You had me at Tea.
(I actually forgot about Clockwork)

Suggestion would be a free open stage for Stage 0, where there are no official productions, but just everything as fan choice or audience created; like anyone can take the mic, play their own games, or just sing whatever, without formal Stage 0 production. That way, the real Stage 0 can do their preparations, while we entertain ourselves.

(I remember way back at Anime Overdose in early 2000's, instead of a long wait between cosplay skits and judges, they had their stage open to anyone that wants to go on stage and do whatever. Those acts were more entertaining and funny than the real skits)

Ideas and Suggestions / More things to do on Thursday and Friday
« on: May 27, 2015, 10:30:53 PM »
I realize that it may be more money, but are there ways to have events, panels, Stage 0, etc. on Thursday morning/afternoon and Friday morning? After we got our badges, it felt like a long time before anything else opened, aside from the gaming room. I think Thursday and Friday mornings are perfect for industry panels, and every time after are fan panels.

General Convention Discussion / Success!
« on: May 26, 2015, 04:49:56 PM »
I'd like to say how well this year's event was held and to say thanks to all staff for another year. I don't have any complaints as far as staffing or venue related issues. I can't speak for people like dealers, swap meeters, and artist alleyers, but the event itself seemed like to be pulled off without any major problems.

Other than issues before the con, like housing, website updates, guests, artist alley registration, etc., the con itself ran as smooth as I ever seen before; and I've been to 16 straight Fanimes.

I hope that Fanime can continue to grow into an even bigger gathering of fans and continue to be well-run like this year.

I'd say that this year was so fun and well-run, that I'd do everything this year next year.
Fairmont, restaurants/food, luggage and cosplays, panels and gatherings, etc.

35
I'll attend, but I'll be Markiplier

Dealers Room / Re: Your Shopping List
« on: May 19, 2015, 10:30:21 PM »
As far as advice, early Friday and Monday are prime days to buy; because dealers are both full of energy on Friday and burnt out, hopeful to not move stuff out on Monday.

Cash is your friend as you can see money changing hands, where all it takes is a swipe of a credit card. That teaches you pace of buying. In reality, there's not a whole lot of things to buy at Fanime that you can't get online. However, you do get to physically touch and see items, and able to get it right away, so there's that.

I had that same dealers room first-timer feel at Wrestlemania...and my wallet hurts right now.

This year, I want to buy or commission Golden State Warriors and Splash Brothers art from artists alley. I'm weird like that. I like to see Chibi-Curry and Chibi-Klay.

I need to find my old Initial D cards now; I miss using my old RX8 back at SJSU. Will we be able to buy new cards from the machines?

And what version of DDR will you have? (Or is it DDR 2013?)
