Anyone participating in the Masquerade needs to have made most of their costume or made it with a group or had it made by the "Group Designer" (who must be in the skit).

We do ask basic questions when you check in. Other cosplayers have been known to be tattletales too, so don't anticipate that you can get around the rules; you WILL disqualify your group.

From the rules:

Please note that costumes purchased or rented from a costume shop, designer direct, eBay, Yahoo Auctions, Yahoo Japan Auctions, Cospa, any other costume store or online resource, or any costumes made for you by a designer or seamstress, are prohibited. Ignoring this rule will negate your eligibility (and your group's eligibility; even if only one person in the group has a disqualified costume) to participate in Masquerade and will also disqualify you for any performance and/or craftsmanship awards. Honesty is always the best policy; tell us if one person in your group made all the costumes. That person (as long as they are a member of your group) is eligible for a Design Award (see the Awards section for more details).

There are two notable exceptions to the "purchased or rented" policy:

Exception 1: "Found Item" costumes are allowed. This is basically a costume that was built by collecting various appropriate pieces from normal clothing stores and combining them together in a unique way (with or without sewing) to make a costume.

Exception 2: If the participant is in the Junior/Youth division, we completely understand if Mom and/or Dad (or a guardian) made or helped to make the costume. However, if this is the case, we would appreciate that Mom and/or Dad (or the guardian) be present at Masquerade to answer the judges' questions and to supervise the participant.

--------------

To pre-emptively answer some questions:

Yes, this has been in place for several years. No, this rule will not be changed. Yes, we did discuss it extensively last year (and the year before, and the year before that), and detailed the resons for Fanime's policies. Yes, every other convention does it this way too, from AX to ComicCon. You can find the info by searching in the forums.

If you want to dress up in a purchased costume, you have options like Stage Zero, the official gatherings, and other resources. The Masquerade is specifically for those who want to compete, and competing means at least making some of your costume or making it with your group or even having your group designer make it and you just wear it (the designer must be in the skit). We have so many people wanting to participate that we have to cut it off somewhere, and that's the dividing line.

Thank you for your understanding and compliance with this issue,
Marisa

So there is no possible way we could enter in the masquarade with a bought costume, but not be eligiable for the costume awards portion? They did that at Otakon 07 I believe.

*Sigh*

Guess I have to make a new costume v_v

Oh, and comissioned wigs are okay, right?

Absolutely fine ^_^

I'm OK with comissioned weapons too, but you need to let us know.

Also, we are not insane. Found items like jewlery, jeans, shoes, etc., are fine. You don't need to make EVERYTHING. We just want to see some real effort. Thanks :)

Alright, Thank you :]

Oh, One more question. Things like dresses and stuff. One cosplay im probably going to put together involves a Dress and some other stuff. Would it count as "Found" If I went to a store, and just bought a dress, and other things i've found like wings at this one Japanese store, and other random accecories since its not comissioned or anything?

Yes, this is fine. Because you are putting together a whole outfit to create the character and you are working to find the pieces. Much different than having someone make you one and send it via eBay ^_^;;;

how many skits can one group do?
Title: Re: Cosplay Spectacular 2008 (Masquerade)
Post by: lycan510 on November 29, 2007, 06:18:55 PM
i can answer that one. Each person is only allowed in one skit.

i had this problem last year... TT_TT

Question. What if we bought the costume from a friend and modified it to fit a specific character? would that count?

One skit per person. One costume also per person (no running off the stage, changing into another costume, etc.). You can have a costume that "changes" into a different costume though (like you tear off your Tuxedo and have sailor Fuku underneath).

Thanks!

We will have 4 microphones on the stage. We need to be made aware in advance what you plan to do, and how many mics you need. We also need some sort of intro music even if you are doing an acapella performance.

Thanks!

Yes. The one with the millions of chairs in the middle and Surrounding Seats. I think the connection for the DSs would be much better in there.

Okay, what I currently have planned is a solo violin performance, but what I was really searching for was if there were any different rules about performance length or costuming. Is there anything else I should be aware of when setting this up? I really want to do something fun and memorable.

This is probably  a stupid question but I'll ask anyway.

Can I still use a costume that has the main part of it made by someone else, but everything else made by me? Sorta like a put together costume, except one item is bought and everything else is made?

This may qualify as a special performance. We generally can give 5-10 minutes to an approved special performance. Did you want to send me some samples of your work? Send to [email protected]

Thanks :)

Forgive me if you get these type of questions a lot, since I'm rather new to Fanime, and even newer to Masquerades. But I don't really understand why purchased/partially purchased costumes are prohibited entirely. It makes sense to me to allow them, but not deny eliganility for awards. I know a lot of people that participate in Masqueardes because they enjoy entertaining people with their skits and don't particularly care about winning any awards. If it's a matter of having a cutoff for entries, why not draw the line at, say, a certain number of entries? A first come, first serve sort of deal? Or if not, is there a way to organize a different event, one where people can perform the skits that they worked hard to write, block, and memorize, even if they have purchased costumes? It just seems kind of unfair to people who can't sew or don't know anyone who can sew but still want to participate  :(

I'm sorry, but this is just the decision. All Masquerades are run this way. We get WAY too many people applying for the contest and we have to make a dividing line somewhere. The majority of people are able to fall under the rules which, at Fanime, are EXTREMELY flexible compared to other conventions. For example, you can join a group where you have a seamstress in your group who makes all your costumes -- there's a way to completely get out of sewing. You can also create a "found item" costume, etc. Most conventions prohibit these two choices. You can always use Stage Zero to stage, block, etc. your own skit. However, the Civic (or the CPA) for that matter cost more money than most people see in their lives to rent, and the people we have every year have not only produced their skits but also created their costumes within the rules. We are able to fill the slots every single year with more than enough (we have tons of people on the waiting list too) that it was the bar we set for participation. I know it makes a lot of people unhappy who can't sew. However, I know hundreds of people who started out not even knowing how to make a pillow much less a costume, who are doing incredible things now. You start at the bottom and you learn, just like everyone else, and believe it or not I've seen people with found item costumes in 2006 who showed up at 2007 with a costume they created themselves. If we do not do it this way, the person who was able to spend the most money (and the least amount of time) on their costume may win; often a skit is enhanced by the quality of the costume so that gives the person an unfair advantage. If you did the same skit in boxer shorts and a t-shirt -- would it have the same impact? Unlikely.

So, if you just want to cosplay and do a skit, probably Stage Zero is your best bet. If you are determined to be in the Masquerade, feel free to hang out here and on Cosplay.com to try to join a group -- you may find someone who will help you with a costume or will provide one for you as part of their group skit. There are ways to work within the system.

Thank you for your questions.

Please note, this is the one and only post I am going to make about this matter. Please read through the archives for previous discussions.

Thanks,
Marisa

Ah, okay. Well, I understand. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I know it must get tedious, since you probably get a lot of the same types of questions, so I really appreciate it.

And, hey, maybe this is a good thing. It's certainly good motivation for me to work on my sewing skills :D Yay, silver lining.

if i go around and find the peices of the outfit(im doing anko from naruto) i cant really MAKE fishnets but if i get a fishnet top and bottom and sew it together and get a brown trenchcoat at a thrift shop and all, would that be considered okay? oh and naruto headbands, do we have to make those too? because technically theyre pre-made for the character.

Sewing fishnets together is kindof like sewing fabric together is it not? Naruto headbands I believe fall under the found item category.

Marisa, do you know what the prizes are for this year? Trophy/Certificate? Money and/or random goodies? Trip to japan?  ;D

Is masq on Sunday this year for sure?  An Cafe lists their concert at Fanime for Sunday....I hope those two events won't ran into each other, and I'd also like to know in advance if Masq is moved to another day, like Saturday. Man, it's going to be a pain if its on Saturday, Im pretty sure half of the people won't finish their costumes on time, if crafts judging will be on friday only.

I have two questions...

1) If the person who made our costumes will be present at Fanime, but not in our skit, can we still perform? Or do you need to just meet the seamstress in a pre-judging time?

2) When will the masquerade begin? I heard taht you need to sign up Sunday morning by 10AM and that there is an optional rehearsal at 4PM. Is this true?

This might of been asked many a time but, Since my costume is home made Like my pants are from a thrift store, my jacket from ebay, and my mask was hand made with stuff from a dollar store, a copyplace (the logo) and the strap came from a hardware store. I can enter with no worry and I'll be performing alone form a like a little over a minute...

alrighty so i read yaknow you can do special preformances like on stage zero one of the things i realy want to do is play a flute from a character that probably would. i know this one might seem kinda odd but i think its realy cool. that would not be masquerade worthy but what is the deal with the special preformances i read about on stage zero how do you get into those or just look into them
(and just to letya guys know it wouldnt be a metal flute it would either be a bamboo one or a cedar one depending on which i remember to bring but it will be one or the other)

How many people can we have on stage at once? I think I may try to do a dance skit with me as Demyx and a whole bunch of dancer minions.

Post by: Nina Star 9 on February 16, 2008, 09:03:20 AM
There are mics with stands, if you are to be singing or something of the like.

For a skirt, it seems to be strangly encouraged to pre-record the vocals. Last year there was an area where you could record the vocals if needed, not sure if that will be provided this year or not.

Not only have I not even started my costume, but I have no idea what to do for a skit this year. I don't want to sing again, I can't really do a skit by myself and with my costume, and walk-ons are strongly discouraged, so my prospects are rather bleak. ._. If there is no real way to have a skit or something else, are walk-ons allowed?

Anyone participating in the Masquerade needs to have made most of their costume or made it with a group or had it made by the "Group Designer" (who must be in the skit).
I'm sorry, I got tired around page two... what do you mean by "made it with a group"?

I have another question... I read that we cannot buy things from Ebay and/or from one place (in general?). A friend of mine is buying a few pieces of clothing from Pyramid Collection (gloves, skirt, and vest). She will be alternating the skirt a little, so my real question is, is it okay to use more than one item from one place?

I see this as a "found" costume, but I wanted to confirm it with you. Thanks.

Hey there,

I sent a message to [email protected], but I'm sure she's really busy replying to a million other questions :) My question is pretty simple, so I figure it can be answered pretty easily here!

I've got my group organized and we're running full force, but what info will I need from them specifically come April 1st? I know full name, age, but specifically beyond that? I want to be 110% prepared when signups open.

Thank you!

@ycan510 It CAN"T be long than 3 mins no exceptions.
@PenguinValentine You can get some stuff liek jewerly (hard stuff to make) but execcive like gloves vests, Skirt, pant... ect. Need to be made. Precorded it recommended. Or your Yell on stage and its REALLY BIG NOT recommended. They only give mic's to singers.
@Mister_E; Yes, When you go to check in about masq, they will ask you what you want to do. And you tell them lights on and wait for Q to play tape.
@MiniskirtEd: PM me and ill give u a secret and a few tips ^_-
@vasher: they Don't set up Time untill like a month and half in advance idk y i think last year it started at 6. And People in it cam like 5 i think. but it might be different this year ur gona have to wait or Email Admin. topic u wont get a good response. ^_-
@Ellome: they ask for
Age, Character name, show name, age, sex, Parsons's real name, What they want to be introduced as. This is exactly what they wanted last year ^_^

Well i hope i helped every oneout ^_^

I have sent a PM and e-mailed twice with no response for over 2-3 months. Please get in contact with me on this subject. It is very important. Thank you!

I'm wondering the same thing myself. As far as I know, the sign up date is still at midnight tonight...I'm just not quite sure WHERE to sign up. Oh the pain.

I'm just going to be checking the main site every now and then until midnight, and if nothing shows, I'll post it here...as much as I don't want to, that's the only other option I can see since everyone's pretty much in the dark about specifics.

Yes, there is an optional rehearsal on Saturday from 2pm - 4pm. This will be on the stage at the civic with music, lights, etc. We also will have a practice area in SJCC E if you would like to use it.

We reserve the first 10 spots for those with large costumes and younger children. The rest of the spots 11 -> 50 are first-come, first-serve.

So, if you get there on the first day when we open, it's likely we can give you position 13.

I think like most other masquerades, that you couldn't count it -- unless the commissioned part was something like the wig or jewlery/specific accessories.

Question regarding to:

>STEP 2: Log In and Edit your FanimeCon Masquerade Registration
>Add members, change members, change your entire skit.

I didn't see any spot to write down about SKIT itself...where is it?
Is there a place to write down the script?
I only sew and filled the contestant members, special needs, light and music.

Thank you.

You need a badge to be able to perform, so that would be a good thing. But the problem I had for a few minutes was to register for the masq, you need to register under the cosplay section.

So this means when it asks you to "log-in", select "new member" below the fill in bar and register in the cosplay section. THEN you can register for the masq.

Slightly convoluted, yes, but it works.

Don't have to as far as I can tell. As long as you have your specifications that the tech people take care of and your listed members of the skit registered in your listing, you're good. No need to put up your script or anything.

Thanks! This was a pretty painless experience, and it's kind of crazy and scary and awesome to see it filling up so fast. I'm playing "Name that cosplay group!" here & chatting with other registerees on AIM. Funtimes!

You do not need to tell me about the skit itself until the convention. As long as it follows the rules, I don't care what your skit is :) You just need to tell us about lighting, contestant members, special needs, and music.

It does not look like you registered yet, I don't have any record of that e-mail ... :/

Make sure you hit submit at the bottom and that you have filled out the form correctly.

Your username can only contain lowercase letters, an underscore, and numbers.

You must fill out the entire form.

Then you should get the e-mail :)

*sigh of relief* I am finally registered. That takes a load off.

However, while you seem to be here, angeljibrille, I have a question about skits. I was thinking about a walk-on, even though I really don't want to do one and you guys really don't want me to do one, but it says on the webiste that at the very least, several poses can be a "minimal performance." So if I am understanding this right, that would noot be a walk-on and would be a performance, correct? I am not 100% sure of what I will be doing on stage at this point, so I am hesitant to fill out the information that talks about that, but if several poses is a "minimal performance," as in not a walk-on, I think I would feel a bit better about at least clicking the box that tells if I am doing a walk-on or skit.

I hope I made sense.

Hi...So i have a question that me and my group members have been trying to get answered for a while now.

We have a skit planned with the same characters from last year, however, every member of our group is remaking the costumes of the same characters that we used from last year. Is this acceptable?

Because technically, they aren't the same costumes, just the same character.

Thanks so much (ahead of time!)

I have questions:
For lighting, can there be tinted lighting? Like, at 0:30 seconds, can the lights be red, and turn to blue at 1 minute? Can there be flashing lights temporarily? (like the Pretear skit last year) and can you have a spotlight following someone? Thanks alot!

Well, I would classify this as a walk on if you aren't singing, doing a skit, dancing, martial arts, etc.

We will accept a few, but the audience has made it pretty clear they want us to focus on skits :/

1. No, we have no colored lighting. Your options are on, off, fade in, fade out.
2. The Pretear group brought their own lighting system to do the flashing effect (as did the Full Metal Alchemist group). I think they were using flashlights XD  So, lighting like that must be provided by you. It cannot have a cord attached; I know that the Full Metal group picked up batter-operated high lumens portable spotlight -- they can be purchased for under $50.
3. No, we only have one spotlight, and they do not let us move it -- it has to be fixed on the emcee. Too expensive to have two and/or to move it, sadly.

Okay, geeze I have too many questions.

1. All of the information we have inputted for the groups (special needs etc.) do they really matter? Will someone look at those and decide from them if we are allowed to be in the competition or not? If so, should I update it as I find out more information about my skit?

2. Is it okay if I have live audio, it's very important that I have it live, because there is no way I can gauge audience reaction to my comedy skit and where to pause for laughs. Some things may be considered funny or not at all.

3. When will the groups be accepted or disapproved from pending status?

4. My costume is made out of found items with a bit of altering. Can I still go for a craftsmanship award?

5. Do we have to go to rehearsals, on Friday or Saturday? Or are they optional? If so, what are the rehearsals like?

6. Do I have to be wearing the costume in order to be judged for craftsmanship/going to rehearsals?

Thank you very much, I hope my questions aren't too much of a bother. ^_^ Looking forward to competing.

Yes, I look at each and every single one. Please enter as much information as you can, the cut off date for updating your record is 5/20/2008. I try to be as flexible as I can, as I know people suddenly decide to do a Gurren Lagan skit instead of Naruto, or an old best friend is now a mortal enemy. However, I will post final approvals on 5/21/2008 after reviewing the entires. So, yes, please fill out as much as you can.

2. Is it okay if I have live audio, it's very important that I have it live, because there is no way I can gauge audience reaction to my comedy skit and where to pause for laughs. Some things may be considered funny or not at all.

Yes, you can have a mic, please request it in advance. HOWEVER, all LIVE comedy routines need to be approved in advance and cannot contain inappropriate language or themes. We can (and will) escort you off the stage if you devolve into inappropriate commentary, especially racial or sexual slurs. You have the same time limit as everyone else, so it can't be entirely free-form.

Quote
3. When will the groups be accepted or disapproved from pending status?

If you pre-registered, you are likely to get in, and some groups who come every year will be approved fairly quickly. If there seems to be a problem, I will contact you way before 5/20/08 to discuss my concerns.

Quote
4. My costume is made out of found items with a bit of altering. Can I still go for a craftsmanship award?

Yes!

Quote
5. Do we have to go to rehearsals, on Friday or Saturday? Or are they optional? If so, what are the rehearsals like?

We will have a room open on Friday and Saturday right next door to the Registration room, you can practice in that at any time. The Saturday rehearsal is optional, but formal, on the stage with lights, music, etc.

Quote
6. Do I have to be wearing the costume in order to be judged for craftsmanship/going to rehearsals?

No, you can bring the costume in on a hanger and the judges can look at it while it is not on you. At times, they actually prefer that as they can see what you did to the costume and look at the seams without feeling weird :)

For the rehearsal -- completely optional on your part if you want to wear your costume or not. You MUST be in full costume by 5pm for the mandatory meeting.

I hope that answers everything :)

Marisa

Just one more question. We'll tell about the skit itself at the con? I don't see a box to be able to input about the description of the skit.

As long as your skit falls within the guidelines, I don't care what it's about :)

I emailed a question to [email protected] earlier this week (before registration opened) and today I received a notice that it had bounced (disk quota exceeded).  Should I email again, or send a private note on this forum since it's regarding something we had discussed last year?

Wayne is also having this problem with the email.

Quick question. I have some voice acting I need done but it is a male character. Unfortunately as hard as I may try I do not sound very manly. Would there be any problems for using my friends and/or family to help me record what I need?

How do we fill this out?

Special Needs: **
Emcee Narration: **
Lighting Requests: **
Music Requests: **

I mean, what does it mean... *seriously has no clue what emcee is*

Lighting Requests: **

I mean, what does it mean... *seriously has no clue what emcee is*[/color]

The Emcee is the person who introduces your group before you come on stage; he/she is basically the host of the event. You are stating what sort of introduction you want him to make for your group. We do a standard Group Number, Group Name, and series your group is from introduction, so this would be something additional. It's completely optional.

Special Needs is basically if you have a large costume, stuff that needs to be stored backstage, some sort of cosplay weapon that's OK for Masquerade but may not be OK to carry around the convention, if you have small children, if you need to go early in the Masquerade (or late), or if you need wheelchair or other special access needs.

Lighting requests... this is also optional. I get some people who have coreographed their entire skits with fade ins, fade outs, dim light, bright light, etc. Other people are "um, just leave the light on please?" So whatever you need. We do NOT have a spot light, your lighting options are basically on, off, fade in, fade out.

Music requests: this is usually if you have some sort of special need, like a microphone if you are doing standup comedy or singing. We do not allow microphones if you are just doing a skit -- we request you pre-record dialogue. We also do not allow mics as "props" -- if you need a mic as a prop (never turned on) in a skit, please bring it yourself.

I hope that helps!

The error message was for a bounce from babbit at anime-online because of "disk quota exceeded".  If you want I can pm you the entire error it sent back to me.  Most worrying is I sent the original message on April 1 before registration opened, and it took until April 6th to get this message that it was undeliverable.

That's just very odd because I have been getting cosplay messages O-o... I also sent some test messages, with no problem.

Hi, I'm new to Fanime (1st year w00t LOL WUT?!). Anyways, I've registered an account for the Masquerde and I have a question. My group is slowly recruiting members and switching around costumes and I'm afraid if I hit the all-mighty "Submit Masquerade Registration" button that all the members will be set in stone. Is this true and if not, is there a cutoff date for when I can switch/add members and costumes if I hit the submit button?

Thanks in advance!

You can switch any and all members (except for the primary contact) up until May 20 :) so go nuts!

You can even change series, costumes, etc.

My goal has always been to have a flexible system, because I know things are constantly in flux.

aw angeljibrille san,
my email has returned back to me and my PM hasn't been answered for 10 days.
I have 2 questions.

For the optional rehearsal on Saturday, you have mentioned:
"We reserve the first 10 spots for those with large costumes"
What is the quolification of the "large costumes?"

We are driving long hours from S. California to Fanime on Friday and register later on that day. Do we still get a spot to rehearse in the optional reheasal time with audio/lighting on Saturday?

How do I register my on/off stage ninjas in the masq. registration page?

Thank you.

Hi, this question may sound weird. But I'll try to explain it as best as possible.

My friends are planning a skit and they said they wanted me to be in it. I already registered my group to be in the masquerade, so I can't be in their skit due to the rules. So my question is this, how can I cancel my registration so that my friends are able to register me in their group for the masquerade?

Thank you very much. ^_^

Eesh :(  I dunno what's up. I'm getting a LOT of cosplay mail. I'm not sure why some are not getting through :( Sorry! It's because at the moment it goes from [email protected] -> my e-mail. I'm not sure if somehow the [email protected] is not forwarding everything or what.

Generally something we cannot get on and off the stage easily. Giant robots, a huge tank, a dragon worn by 6 people, or also perhaps someone who needs access for a disability and cannot wait backstage for very long. We also try to work kids (12 & under) into the first 10 spots.

If you come to rehearsal, you will get to try out your skit on the stage at least 1 time. We generally try to give everyone at least 2 runs through.

So then no reservation/appointment necessary for dress rehearsal?
We will just show up then?

Also about the rehearsal area aside of dress rehearsal, do we just show up and get to rehearse there as well?

This will be my first Fanime and I have never be in a masquerade that offers the praticipants rehearsal options beforehand. It sound Fanime is special to me already!

To whom it may concern:

Hello! I've attended Fanime for a few years now, but have never entered the Cosplay contest (Der Cosplay, Cosplay Spectacular, whatever you wish to call it.) in the past. So I have a few questions since I'm potentially interested in it this year.

1) How bad is it if I were to sign up, and then need to back out? D: I'm working on the cosplay, and am a little bit worried about getting it done in time and to my own expectations, but I also know/have a feeling I'd need to basically register now if I wanted to get a spot. Would it make things hard on the staff if I backed out a week or so before the Con?

2) If I DO finish it and managed to be part of the Cosplay Spectacular, I noticed you said you needed to be in full costume at ____ time. The cosplay I'm planning will wind up being very hot inside. Would it still be considered "full costume" if I were to... oh.... take the head off? (I know, that sounds really weird. It's gonna be a mascot costume.)

3) Also, it's from a video game, but I want to make sure I could enter it before I DID enter it. Who would I need to e-mail to ensure that it's fair game to enter? (Don't wanna announce it yet.)

Thanks for the time, and sorry for all the questions!

Yep! There's a room right next to the Masquerade registration that's basically for people to practice, hang out, work on costumes, whatever you need. There's a nice deck outside that people can use too if you need more space or want to take pictures.

WE HUNT YOU DOWN!

Just kidding. It means nothing :) Sign up, you have a spot- people on the waitinglist have pretty much 100% chance to get in based on previous years, because so many people change their minds, don't finish costumes, have a war with their group, and/or can't make it. If you don't sign up in advance, it's much harder for us -- so we would rather have you "save that spot" even if you can't go. Thanks :)

Yes, this is full costume, and we would probably put you in the first few groups -- make sure to let me know about this costume in the special needs section. That way you can take it off for the rest of the Masquerade and not die of heat overdose :)

Video games are almost always fine if they are like Final Fantasty, Kingdom Hearts, other Japanese or asian type video games (like Ragnarok).

Stuff like World of Warcraft is not permitted though... :)

I have completed the listing!

Right now, based on the head count, I was able to approve 56 groups as ready-to-go.

12 groups have problem entries and cannot be approved or even be pending until their registrations are fixed. Please check out your entry and make sure it is complete if you are flagged as PROBLEM.

3 groups were removed for blatantly not following the rules, they will not be allowed to reapply for this year's contest, sorry.

No, the badge pickup for the convention is handled seperately.  Masquerade check-in will be in the the Masquerade HQ room: SJCC D (which I believe is behind where they usually put Karaoke)

angeljibrille:

Thanks for the swift response! :D

Two more questions though.

I'm 19 and living at home right now, so I'm liable to get a bit of help on the costume from my father with the making of the head. How much help would be enough to disqualify me from the contest? (Like... can't touch the costume at all? Can help with a tiny bit of the finishing touches? Can only sit to the side and act as a sort of safety coach? XD )

Oh, and the other thing is that it would probably be a walk-on, unfortunately. x_x I seem to recall reading somewhere that you were going to put all of them in a group ( I want to say I read that it was towards the end?), so would it still be a problem if I kept off the head until 5-15 minutes before I went on?

Sorry for all the questions, but I figure if I'm going to enter, I'll do it right, and do it by the rules.

Thanks again for your quick response, and sorry for my belated one.

(Like... can't touch the costume at all? Can help with a tiny bit of the finishing touches? Can only sit to the side and act as a sort of safety coach? XD )

Your dad can help, of course, no problems. Please just tell the judges how much he helped, etc.

We aren't completely and utterly anal about this; we understand many costumes are collaborative projects. Our rules are merely in place to prohibit those who purchased costumes (like full costumes) off of eBay or other costume web sites from participating. As long as you are making this costume mostly yourself or even putting it together from found items that are being modified, we are satisfied that you put in an honest effort.

We still haven't decided how we are going to handle walk-ons yet, but we will have a staging area backstage for you to store the head and as you have a special costume (please note in "special needs") we can try to get you on as early as possible.

thanks~~

Perfect, :D Now I can register without a fear of registering only to be disqualified! XD Thanks sooooooo much for the prompt response!

I'll definitely note that the costume gets hot in the special needs section. Heck, if it's decently cool in the back area it might not be a problem. Not sure yet as I'm not finished though.

Thanks again!

This depends on if the jacket was specifically made for the character you're costuming as (for example by a seamstress, costumer, or retailer like cospa) or if you were looking for a blue jacket and happened to find an article of clothing on ebay that matched.  In one case you are buying a costume piece, in the other you're finding an article that your costume needs.

My jacket it just a South Pole brand, I didn't say "Hey Kids be the Laughing Man" or something like that.

That's fine.  Basically that's the same as going to a thrift store or the mall to buy a jacket.  It's not that you can't buy anything off ebay, lots of people buy wigs there, you just can't buy an actual costume from ebay.

Just for clarification. For the craftsmanship judging do we need to be in full costume and make-up? I've heard both that we do and we don't.

Lots of people bring their costumes for the judging instead of wearing them.  Also, it doesn't specifically say that you need to wear it during judging in the rules.  If you need a lot of makeup or it's an awkward costume to wear and you're being judged on Friday, it's understandable that you don't want to get into the full costume for judging and then again for masquerade.  The judging guidelines are on http://www.fanime.com/events/cosplay-spectacular-competition-guidelines after the award list.

For the mandatory meeting before masquerade you need to be in full costume and makeup since after the participants are sorted out, masquerade starts and there won't be time to change.

If you have special needs because of your costume because of makeup, large pieces, limited movement, etc, you should note that in your entry information.

All of this is correct (<3 seiginomikata)

In addition to this, if you have a pressing need to be jugded on Saturday because your makeup is all-important to your costume (such as if you have extensive body paint), just note that also in your special needs section. We will make sure you get judged on Saturday so you only have to put it all on once.

However, the judges are mostly looking at the craftmanship of your costume during the judging process. They will note the fit and your ability to move in the costume (as well as how you look on the stage, makeup and all) during your skit. This is why it is important, if you are a walk-on, to make sure you come out and do a few poses. The judges can then see how your costume moves and looks with you in it :)

Live steel sword question:

I know a live steel sword can't be carried out of its scabbard during the con or at the Masquerade performance, but in a strictly supervised environment such as judging could it come out of its sheath?

I'm guessing not, but just figured I'd ask since nothing is better made than a real high-carbon steel blade and it really adds to the look and feel of the costume.

Looking at the Weapons Policy here: http://www.fanime.com/about/policies it says "Live steel is not permitted.  Live steel is defined as swords, knives, or other objects made of metal that can take an edge.  Dull metal weapons are considered live steel, and therefore are not permitted.  Live steel in a scabbard or protective cover is still not permitted."

So I'd say you should not bring that sword at ALL to the convention.

I realize there is a section regarding allowing non-conforming weapons for masquerade with special permission, but live steel tends to be strictly prohibited and the fanime security people are unlikely to allow it.  I would strongly suggest looking into finding a non-metal alternative for your prop.

Guess they've changed the policy... I've been bringing steel weapons to the con for 2 years now, and as long as it is secured in its scabbard (which I do beforehand, usually with chain), they've let me carry them.

Since it's a special circumstance I shall e-mail the supreme powers.

I have good (and bad) news for you.

YES you can bring it for Masquerade. However, there are rules.

#1. Please put it in your special needs request NOW. If I am not award of it in advance, you CANNOT bring it.

#2. Must be stored in your car and/or hotel room in a case and/or tube until Saturday at 5:00pm.

#3. Item must be checked in with the Fanime Security Weapon's Master backstage when you arrive at the Civic on Saturday.

#4. You check the item out right before your performance, do your skit on the stage, walk off the stage to the photo area and take your photo, then go back and re-check your weapon with the weapon's master.

#5. Check it back out after the Masquerade is over and return it DIRECTLY to your car or hotel room. You will NOT be able to take it out for post-Masquerade photos; if security sees you doing this you will get in a lot of trouble ^_^;

I hope this helps. Thanks :)

Uh, oh, Weapon Policy looks exeptionally harsh this year. I went ahead and put our props in the special needs section in our registration. We are group Nekoyaki and one of our members has little plastic guns glued to the insides of her cape. They are completely non-functional, but might look like real tiny guns.  Hope it won't cause any problems!

I hope everyone knows that this is completely out of my control ^_^;; I have no say in the security policy.

However, they were kind enough to give me some leeway for Masquerade (and only for Masquerade). :)

If they are props that do not fit in with the "regular" rules, then they need to be judged on Saturday. Just let me know. You can have your costumes judged on Friday, and the props on Saturday.

I have a question, not sure if its been addressed.  Do we need to register our stage ninjas in the group, like we did with those performing in the skit, if we plan on having them or when we sign in can we just let you know we are going to have stage ninjas? - if we have them, I'm still trying to see if the people I'm going to ask will be stage ninjas and all.
[ 'cause, they aren't in costume or anything .. but they would be part of the performance]

Generally, though I can't account for this year's MC, it goes something like "Entry number X, (group name) presenting (series costumes are from)"  and after the entry they'll say "(name) as (character)" if the MC field is left blank.

As long as you aren't on Cosplay Staff, it's not a problem. :)

Quote
2. Are the groups 65+ on a secondary wait list? Or are the entries just reviewed in batches?

Let's put it this way: it's not really a # of groups thing, it's a time issue. Basically, if you are on the list, show up at the convention and check in. If you are in the first 55 groups, you have priority over everyone else. HOWEVER, say we have all 55 groups register, and the total time for their skits measures out to 2 hours. We have about 3 hours total for Masquerade, so we can usually accomodate additional groups. If we get several walk ons, they are all going to be grouped together at the start in a type of "fashion show", which leaves us more room for skits.

I am (taking a deep breath and crossing fingers) betting that we will be able to accomodate everyone who has signed up at this point. Based on the number of people, the types of skits, and our yearly dropout rate of 20% (due to various reasons, such as not finishing costumes on time, not being able to go to Fanime, or combining with another group), I expect we will end up with around 50-60 groups in the actual show this year, but that wil likely include even those in Group 88 on the waiting list. Also, I am going to be purging groups soon who are flagged "Problem" if they don't fill out the rest of their information.

So, don't be discouraged :)  Please just show up at the convention on Friday to check in. Those who check in early are likely to score those waiting list spots. Final spots will be announced on Saturday at about 10:00am. If I were you, I would presume that you are going to get in.

Many thanks!

A couple more questions:

Will there be enough space for people to come on and off stage? AKA will there be wings/curtains to hide behind and enter the stage from?

I'm going to have a set of removable wings with my costume. Would it be alright if I went onstage with them on and again with them off? (It wouldn't be for two different characters, more like a powered up version of a character and then a battle scarred version of the same person)

Would it be better to use paper cutouts of guns or plastic ones? The guns have an orange stripe around the nozzle, but I'm not sure if you can use toy guns in the Masquerade.

One of our members will be an object (from a game). Is that an acceptable cosplay entry? (She'll be running around on the stage...  XD)

Yes. There's also a way to walk behind the curtain. However, everyone at the end of the skit will need to EXIT on the same side because we only have one approved exit (I think it's stage right).

Not a problem.

You can bring the plastic ones. They need to be stored backstage until your skit with the Weapon's Master, used for your skit, and then returned. Please leave the orange tip on though. Thanks :)

A bit worried. I was the 12th person to register for this year, I was approved for over a month, and I still didn't get on the last list. Is there anything I can do/did I do something wrong?

I sent out the confirmation e-mails; if you did not respond, I actually called everyone on the list. I left messages at your registered phone number.

When I didn't hear back from the e-mail or the phone call, the group was removed from the list. I also removed people who gave me bad e-mails or phone numbers, or who never filled out their entire entry with costumes and such (the people who didn't fill out costumes will NOT be allowed in, they are permanently removed).

This was in the rules: http://www.fanime.com/events/cosplay-spectacular-competition-guidelines#reg

You may fall into this list. It's probably not a problem that we get you in if you had your entry filled out properly and were not flagged "PROBLEM". Please drop me an e-mail [email protected] and let me know your GROUP NAME and I will look it up for you.  I will be going offline (until after the convention) at about 5:00pm.

However, if the registration fills up (i.e., we get over 65 groups that check in) you may not get into the Masquerade. I suggest that you check in as soon as possible. We will defer to the people who followed protocol first.
