The second was the sharp increase in registration prices. The last time I attended Fanimecon, a 4-day pass was somewhere in the neighborhood of $60. This year, it was $85. Look, guys, this isn't Venezuela. We're not experiencing 50% annual inflation. This kind of price increase, in combination with the first policy change that I mentioned, is absolutely inexcusable, especially when Kublacon is still only $60.

My one response to this, is if the price is an issue come volunteer.  put in 20 hours from Thursday to Monday  (which ain't that hard I worked 42 hours) and you get your membership for free.  You get to meet people and see things you don't normally get to.  Sure if you get a boring job monitoring a door that can not be fun, but hey... pokemon stops.

I really enjoyed the guest band that played while the judges were finalizing awards. (Plus they are Akatsuki no Yona fans, awesome!) What is their name?

We have gone back and forth about his and it is my feeling that;  In playing it, its clearly an homage to the game style that came out of Japan in the 80's and 90's.  To me Fanime should be honoring anime, its style, and culture.  We should not get hung up on the geographic location or cultural/racial background of its creators.  With that I am announcing that Undertale is a qualifying source for the masquerade entries

Hi all,

For years there has been confusion on what is the masquerade? What is the cosplay spectacular? How is this different from cosplay gatherings?  Why is this different from X conventions costume contest?  Where is it?  What is it about?

So I have decided that a much clearer, normalized name is needed.  This event will be called the 'FanimeCon Masquerade Cosplay Contest' or the Masquerade for short.

What is the 'FanimeCon Masquerade Cosplay Contest'?
It is a live stage performance and costume contest in which contestants present their best looks and skits to battle for prizes.

What should you expect?
Great theatrical performances, amazing costumes and creative takes on the latests anime, games and timeless classics.  Come and see watch the show.

You want to be in the show?
Here is what you need:
- Your own cosplay (this means no store bought or commissioned costumes, please.)
- Music (if you need help, we will help)
- A vision for what you want to be seen as on stage.  (if you need help, we will help)

QuoteI think it's unreasonable to ask everyone if they are okay with this. They could walk away before you get the chance, or you could simply forget.

Let me provide a bit more color on this one, the rule of thumb is if they(the cosplayer) are already posing, then go for it, take the shot.  If they are not posing, if they are having a intimate conversation, taking a break, eating, getting in our out of parts of their costume.  Ask first.

You don't want to be the paparazzi and make cosplayers feel like they don't have a moment peace or break.  It may surprise you but wearing and caring our stuff is tiring, and we are on our feet most of the day and the last thing I need to feel like I need to hide so I can take my gear off and air dry a bit, eat a snack, or talk to my family.  All this behavior does is drive people to not want to cosplay or to push hard for a zero photographer zones.

I know there are some photographers who like taking candid shots and even stalk cosplayers to catch them off guard. I have personally walked a few to security and had them bounced out of conventions for this. In one case causing a young lady to tears, shacking and to try to hide behind the biggest cosplay they could find(me, in a big daddy).  Just don't, or if you do snap that shot, go over afterward and show them the shot and ask if its ok.  It may be a great shot, but if the person does not want you to have it, then do the right thing and delete it.

Remember: You are not paying these people to model for you, so you can't expect them to do, or allow you to do, what ever you want without complaint.

Also remember you are not in public, you are on private property while on the grounds of the convention center/hotel and you are restricted by the policies of the convention.  Nothing sets my wife (who is a professional photographer) off, is people trying to play hallway lawyer about this; conventions space is not public space, the square outside is still private property.  General rule of thumb, if you are asked to stop, stop.  If you don't, expect to be ejected and or arrested (as the upskirt fellow found out last year).

QuoteJust to clarify a little, If you just want to be judged on craftsmanship like... normally, you don't have to sign up for the private judging right?

Correct, this is an option.

QuoteMy partner for the show isn't even getting to Fanime until Saturday night, so there are still the normal sunday spots correct?

You will be fine.

QuoteAlso! because I'm looking at the form to try and fill it out, how are we supposed to sign up for two costumes to be judged? Do I just send in 2 forms even if I completely made both the costumes in our group?

Yes one per, plus I will drop a pdf form in your dropbox

Hello Contestants,

Tonight at midnight Saturday May 16th three new web based forms will go live:

We have consolidated the craftsmanship forms to a single form located here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1H9t58-PeAVe29L-uh_JjKb1yQLMCpUd_w5d3r-WlBn8/viewform?c=0&w=1
Next communications:

In the next few days you will receive the following:
Your entry number - This will have an 'A' or 'B' followed by a number and will indicate the order your entry will go on stage.  If you have any special requests on where you would like your entry to appear, please contact me. Come Sunday of Fanime, this is the only number you will care about.
Practice Room Request form - This form will allow you to book practice room space from the following times (Note: this is the Blossom Hill ballroom, not the civic stage)
Friday 1:00pm  to 8:00pm, .
Saturday 10:00am to 12:00 and 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
Extra Stage Rehearsal Request form - This form will allow you to request pre-rehearsal time on the civic stage.  These run from 9:30am to 12:00 noon and there are only 20 slots. Mandatory dress rehearsals begin promptly afterward. So you will walk the stage once before your performance.
MC appointment requests - Our distinguished Master of Ceremonies Tadao Tomomatsu may contact you to make an appointment to go over specific pronunciations and if you are using a script, details on tone, timing and the like.  This is at this discretion, however he will speak to each of you the day of the masquerade.
Reminders - If we have not received your Music, releases or other forms, we will reach out and check in with you.
Thank you all,

Erik Anderson

We have 50 confirmed contestants

Registration will continue till the Saturday at the convention and we will maintain a waiting list of 15 entries over the 55 slots we have.  If you end up on the waiting list the form will tell you when you sign up.  If we receive more then 70 entries we will close registration entirely.  Once we have our final run list you will get a performance number, this starts with a Letter A or B and indicates which block you will be in, it also shows the order in which you will go on stage and on Sunday its the only number that should matter.  You will get a badge with your number on it and be introduced to your den mom/dad that will be taking care of you for the show.

Midnight Saturday May 16th three new web based forms will go live:

  • Craftsmanship Judging form - This form must be filed out prior to Fanime, to be considered for Craftsmanship awards; This allows the judges to be prepared for entry.
  • Tech Request form - This is a detailed tech request form and contains information on the capabilities of our stage, size to allow you to best utilize the stage for your entry.  Next year there will be online videos showing what these lighting effects look like.
  • Craftsmanship Judging Appointment Request -  This allows you to optionally request a private review with craftsmanship judges on Saturday.  Appointments can be made from 1:00pm to 3:00pm (if we need additional slots we will extend this time).  This is optional, you can also be judged on site, but it allows for more time and to review your construction while not wearing it.

What is the timeline for this? Are designs submitted at this year's Fanime, then displayed at next year's?

Hi Jeg_ejj,

The design contest would open up Monday just after Fanime closes and then submissions would close on November 1.  After that the Judges would deliberate and the winners would be announced on December 1 on the Fanime Website, facebook and twitter.  We will also have a email list which can be subscried to.  In the announcements the designs will be shown and the bidding starts (more details on the process above).

At Fanime we will formally award the designer and display the design projected up next to the runway and then the Cosplayer will come out with the design come to life.  There is then judging and awards on the cosplay's execution of the design, construction and presentation. I really want people to push the envelope and try new things.

For tax purposes Fanime, like every other convention, fair or event is organized as a corporation, so its misleading to imply that this is the same as a for profit corporation like AX, ComicCon or Wizard.  What 'for fans by fans' means is that we volunteer our time and while some perks are rewarded generally we spend far more time and money then the benefit.  Personally I spent around $3000 last year of my own funds to host my event.

The irony. While Fanime is organized as a corporation, 2 of the 3 you mentioned (AX and Comic-Con) are non-profits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime_Expo

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Comic-Con_International

Well first off Wikipedia is a terrible source for concrete facts.  It is literally anti-expert.

Secondly, you are aware that a non-profit is a type of corporation that a company is literally incorporated as a 501.c(3) "charity" under the corporate tax code? Here is an interesting read on the contraversy around their filing status:

QuoteBut the "nonprofit educational corporation promoting comics and related popular art forms," as Comic-Con describes itself, said it had $9,999,107 cash on its books at the end of the 2010 reporting period.

http://patch.com/california/lamesa/comic-conwith-net-assets-of-7-millionpays-city-no-bus68a5dfd212

QuoteSo where is most of that money spent? The biggest expense is the one that impacts attendees most – security, at a whopping $1.3 million. Second is the salaries for the 35 people CCI employed that year, at just over $1.2 million. And to rent the convention space? A cool $424k. Since these specific program expenses were not separated by con, we don't know how much of this actually went toward SDCC, but by law of ratios it is likely the majority.

http://sdccblog.com/2013/02/comic-con-internationals-tax-documents-reveal-organizations-assets-cost-of-sdcc/

QuoteEmployees who had ties with corporate officers were listed as Maija Gates, daughter of executive director ($63,412); Colleen O'Connell, wife of treasurer ($61,770); and Eddie Ibrahim, former board member ($61,303).

Download a copy of the 990 filing at the bottom of the page here:

http://www.sandiegoreader.com/documents/2011/jul/08/comic-con-09-990/

http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/news-ticker/2011/jul/08/comic-con-grossed-more-than-9-million-in-fy-09-lat/#

This is where I point out that I do this for free, well actually I pay about $3,000 a year to work the convention.

Finally let me point out that Anime Expo is not a non-profit charity its a 503c(6) corporation - the so called Business Leagues exemption. You will also note that it paid $542.384.00 in salary to its employees in 2010.

http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_pdf_archive/943/943156848/943156848_201012_990O.pdf

QuoteSection 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code provides for the exemption of business leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade and professional football leagues, which are not organized for profit and no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.
A business league is an association of persons having some common business interest, the purpose of which is to promote such common interest and not to engage in a regular business of a kind ordinarily carried on for profit. Trade associations and professional associations are business leagues. To be exempt, a business league's activities must be devoted to improving business ...

http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Other-Non-Profits/Business-Leagues

Now if you want to compare actual charities to ComicCon its worth noting that the United Way, the largest charity in the US only gets $4.2 million a year, that's less then half of what ComicCon gets.  Then again the NFL which is in the same tax section as Anime Expo gets $9.5 billion in revenue per year.

What does this and anything else about conventions finances have to do with which convention you are going to attend?  likely nothing.
