Title: E-Gaming/Arcades Suggestions-Feedback thread for 2008
Post by: Umi.Ryuuzaki on May 28, 2007, 08:05:45 PM
Crazyness. I'm surprised I didn't get sick.

Before I begin, E-Gaming Department management would love to thank every staffer working with us for pulling off another good year and pulling through a number of unexpected hardships that occurred.

E-Gaming is aware of a number of things that went right and wrong. One thing fresh on my mind is tournaments: it was brought to my attention that a tournament exceeded a certain time limit I requested and we will try to avoid that in the future. Also, I think people noticed the somewhat smaller console area - because of last minute changes and equipment issues, we could not deploy everything we wanted and this disappointed us. Hopefully it will be resolved and our connections more, "dedicated."

Also, this is not a final decision, but a general policy we keep in E-Gaming: we cannot simply accept a loan of equipment from an outside source other than our staffers: it presents a liability risk that we nor FanimeCon cannot accept. We were asked during the convention about it and we did make exceptions, under the condition that the loaner watches the equipment themselves. Next year, a new procedure or policy will be made about it.

Last, but more importantly, we will be in dire need of new staffers to continue this, as a number of our veteran staff are retiring. More details will be posted as post-Con and FanimeCon '08 planning begins.

This thread will be for feedback for the next FanimeCon ('08) and will also now cover PC/Console gaming plus Arcades, because of the previous thread and the common confusion to put posts about arcades here. If the dept. head leader of Arcade would like to use a separate thread for feedback/suggestions, let me know and I'll edit accordingly.

We are also watching the main comments thread (http://forums.fanime.com/viewtopic.php?t=7575) for additional information.

Alot of words this time around. /hmm

Let the suggestions and comment making begin! Keep it constructive and to the point - FanimeCon Board rules apply here too. E-Gaming will be listening and watching.

You guys should aquire Initial D V4 next year. It comes out internationally in November, or December at the most.
If not, we could use a few more IDV3 machines, as well as more Air Hockey tables. Also, I was thinking maybe I could bring in my own PS2 and set up Urban Reign or some other fighting game. :)

Fighing game line up was nice.

Pop'n music was a big surprise. Wouldn't mind having it again.

DDR machines were good. Nice having one extreme and one SN rather then 3 extremes like last year.

The only big complaint I have is: Fix the machines when possible. Drummania snare anyone?

Beatmania III would be niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice too. (IIDX AC kinda sucks unless monitor is good)

Nice Air Hockey

DDR freestyle was awesome

DanceManiax freestyle was awesome

More Curtain Shooters would be nice too

Nice line up this year over all.

The consol area was pretty good as well.

I have only a few things worthy of note:

1) Get MBAC Ver.B2 (Correction Edition)
2) There was something funky about the AC machine. It seems somewhat sluggish.
3) Towards Sunday/Monday, some of the buttons needed to be replaced (at least on GGAC/MBAC).
4) Stools! Those chairs we stole from tabletop gaming were horrid.
5) Everything was split way too far away from each other (console - pc - arcade - tabletop).
6) Fighting Game Tournaments

More to come later...

The chances will improve, however, if GOLD does make its way to the US. But even that's starting to look like a pipe dream.

Regarding PS2 IIDX releases: If possible, attempt to have most if not all of the newer styles (that's anything 9th Style and beyond); DistorteD and maybe GOLD CS will be out by then, so try to acquire those.

For arcades next year:

I am buying that Pop'n Music cabinet.  I'm trying to convince On Campus Entertainment to bring out their Pop'n 10 and upgrade it though, so we might see FEVER next year.

IIDX won't be there, sorry :/ on-campus I don't believe has a IIDX machine and one of the con-ops heads told me very rudely that they won't be getting machines from golfland again so there's little or no chance of that.

on-campus is definitely gettin' Initial D Ver.4, so don't worry, it should be there next year :D

Eric, about beatmaniaIII that's probably your deal since you play on that machine, I already told them not to get rid of it so I think as long as they know you want it at con it could be arranged.

Curtain Shooters, if on-campus will provide me cabinets, I can provide games.  By then I should have a Mushihimesama (and Futari), Ikaruga, Espgaluda and a few others at my disposal.  Also got stuff like Radiant Silvergun, Twinkle Star Sprites, Terra Diver...so yeah, I'll do some talking with them for next year.

Console gaming, I'm definitely staffing next year so I can bring consoles and games, and at least the newest CS IIDX.  I've got like 5 controllers too so lol, also can bring my Pop'n ASC and maybe my Pop'n FEVER supergun.  Let me know what you guys want, I can find staffers that have what you're looking for.

As for E-gaming staff, I'd be interested in switching over from logistics, I want to try different departments because I'm planning on starting up a con in Reno.  As for the arcade side, I'm an experienced tech, I know how the things work and am in contact with on-campus.  Let me know if you'd be interested in having me on board; It's hard for me to make meetings because I'm 4 hours away, but I'd love to do it :D

Mad props for those DDR pads.  I think everyone here owes On Campus a big round of applause for the condition of their games!

I've heard that On Campus actually does have a IIDX machine. It's just sitting in storage right now because apparently it doesn't sell (which doesn't surprise me)

Are you planning on buying the pop'n 10 machine from them or are you just trying to convince them to upgrade?

Oh and I greatly appreciate your work and such especially at SVGL (and the plush you let me swag)

I'm trying to buy their Animelo 2 because I have an upgrade for that style cabinet, and trying to sell them an upgrade for Carnival for their 10th machine.  I'd actually be interested in doing a direct trade for 10th because I'd like to have every version for that hardware; I've already got 11 thru 14.  Do you know the version of that IIDX cab?  I'm beginning to remember they had it, and mentioned something along the lines of being upset that they didn't have an I/O board and were having massive headaches trying to upgrade it.

x_x I didn't do much for SVGL, but your welcome anyway xD

As much as I enjoy playing Pop'n, I didn't like Animelo 2 because of the lack of Hi-Speed, which means unless you can read squishy notes it's unplayable on harder songs.

Para Para Paradise was quite popular this year and I'm hoping they add a Para Para Dancing machine to the arsenal next year, mostly because it has 8 sensors so you can play facing to the side or away from the screen.

WMMT2 4-player was also nice. (The 1P machine had discounted continues--wth?!) Hoping to see WMMT3 4-player next year. My one complaint (though it can't be controlled) is that some of the people without cards challenged people who had full-tuned (810-815hp) cards.

I'd also like to see Mario Kart Arcade GP, preferbably with cards so we can build up collections of items to use in multiplayer races. (The carded machines don't seem likely though; I'm unsure if there's even any MKAGP machines in the U.S. that have cards. Stupid BaNamco and Nintendo.)

Well if they sell that cab, they'll have another lined up, and will probably be picking up one of my FEVER upgrades.  We'll have something good next year, if I have to bring a cab myself.

Like I said...A Para Para Dancing (8 sensors for playing facing sideways or away from the screen and Korean songs) to go with that 2nd Mix would kick epic quantities of ass.

Fever would be nice. Adventure (despite some complaints about timing problems) would be AMAZING. 16 AC would be quite a pipe dream, but hey, if you can somehow get it (assuming it's released), omfg.

IIRC, the initial release of Rock Band will include one guitar, mic, and drum set. Controllers that came with previous versions of Guitar Hero on the 360 also work with Rock Band.

but i would like to see some Wiis there, maybe one with Wario ware, thats a really good crack game ( or maybe Super bust a move Bash, but thats just me)
though, would people be able to bring their own Wii remotes to use? that might cut down on having to round up a gazillion wii remotes and nunchucks, and frankly con provided ones could get really icky really fast

Also, i would like to see me some Katamari again D: it was there in 06(?), but not in 07, when i acctually knew how to play it ;___; i was very woefull
im not even asking for beautiful katamari, i would just like to see katamari damacy or we <3 Katamari there

Its the korean version of the DDR arcade with 5 steps rather then 4 steps, would be a nice addition to the arcade games if ever DDR is full and no one else could get a chance to play it.

PIU's had several releases beyond Exceed, so I wouldn't see them getting that, but rather PIU NX or NX2.

As much as I enjoy playing Pop'n, I didn't like Animelo 2 because of the lack of Hi-Speed, which means unless you can read squishy notes it's unplayable on harder songs.
I thought the Animelo 2 did not have hi-speed as well, but I later found that choosing one of modes did yield a mod options screen. (It was essentially the equivalent of challenge mode, although it presented itself as being harder than the "normal" mode in Animelo.)

However unlikely this may be, I would like to see some Tetris GrandMaster. If I have a TGM or TGM2+ board by Fanime, I can bring it. I want to save for TGM3, but I'm pretty certain that would not be able to happen before May. (You never know, though.)

Other than that, I'd mainly be interested in curtain shooters and music games. Every thing that Kenchan has suggested so far is sounding good. I'd definitely play Mushihimesama. Did you say Pop'n FEVER supergun? I'm there.

pop'n 16 PARTY is set to release March 2008.

Hopefully, they'll have fixed the timing issues apparent in Adventure to warrant bringing it over. If not, then 13~15 AC would do. :3

Suggestions:
1 quarter per fighting game (weren't some games last year 50 cents?)

3-4 quarters for card racing games (Initial D and Wangan), and 4+ quarters for buying a new car(d) (Initial D 4 should be more cuz of the new card system)

All fighting games were 50 cents. Others cost even more IIRC. The reason the price is high is because of the demand and the fact that people will pay for it. This more likely than not will remain unchanged.

The End

Hi there ^__^

I definitely vote for Para Para Paradise and DDR!

I love those games! How about having a tournament for each of them? I.e. Beginners, Intermiedate, Advanced.

It would be fun to compete ^_^

I also think it'll be fun to have a Naruto Shippuuden Accel 2 Tournament.

Looking forward to the con :)

So I see OCE installed an Espgaluda 2 cabinet at the SJSU Student Union - I bet that'd be a hit at the con.

Also, Melty Blood: Actress Again, if it's released by Fanime and feasible. It'll probably make a lot more money than the MBAC cabinet due to the lack of a home/CS version.

I'm pretty much accepting the fact that most fighting games will be 50 cents since its been that way for the past years.

Games I'd love to see:

CVS2
3rd Strike
DDR Supernova2
Drummania
and...

2 Para Para machines!
Okay I know this seems impossible since it's really hard to find any more machines (I know there's definitely one at MGL), but two would definitely be great. It seems that the game is getting more and more popular this year and the wait to play is loooooooong (Well for me anyway). Also, it's not like we don't have the room for it either ^.^

We need to get some good 2d Shumps into the arcade. Last year, there was only one and it sucked.
I always see the latest fighting games, music games, and the latest arcade releases at the con, but a strange void of good shooters.

I know I'm not the only one who wants this. Shooter Fans Unite!

Espgaluda 2, Mushihimesama Futari, Deathsmiles, or any newer releases would be a dream come true!

I don't have any newer releases, but I've got a very friendly dose of older stuff.  Mushihimesama, ESPgaluda, ESP Ra.De., Radiant Silvergun, Blazing Star, the like.  I have no real easy facilities to tow cabinets, or I'd hella bring stuff too.  I'm pretty sure everything on-campus is bringing is going to have a game in it, and I don't have a supergun.

Heyy buddy, I'm possibly coming down next weekend for the SFU Smash tourney.

If On-Campus brings Pop'n again, I'm bringing my Pop'n FEVER kit regardless of whether I get a hold of them to sell it or not.  Even if they don't want to set it up, I can set up FEVER AC on that supergun, maybe have a tournament or something.  Hell if I can get a second supergun, we could run two simultaneously (thinking out of his ass).  I actually WILL have a supergun by Fanime now, so I can bring my shmups :3 more than likely I'll be bringing Radiant Silvergun, ESP Ra.De., ESPGaluda and Mushihimesama.  I can also bring Pulstar, Blazing Star, G-Darius or Gradius IV if anyone wants, but unless someone does I'm leaving those home because I'll already be bringing 3 or 4 TVs for the console side.

so uh srsly guys, if someone could send me a list of console games you'd like to see, that'd help me out.  I have a big library of PS2/GC stuff mainly, but I'm not sure what to bring.  List Wii stuff too, I can get stuff before Fanime.

EDIT: I can find a way to rig up some PC shmups in the console area too, I have a cute little MAME box (no MAME atm) that would work great.

They won't.  I've been trying to get in contact with them for a while, but just have been too busy.  I know for sure they're bringing Pop'n again.  As long as they're down with my FEVER kit, you guys'll have your Pop'n FEVER.

In the very bright news of shmups, I just got Mushihimesama Futari, so get your loli-lickin' fingers out 'cause no amount of colorful bullets will stop you from wanting more ;D

EDIT: More news, OCE is also confirmed bringing ESPGaluda II.  I'm waiting on a call now, but they're going to work something out to put Mushi Futari in a cabinet as well.

I would you like to state that half of E-Gamings problem is the fact we get NO buget and get treated like sh!t.  If you didnt notice let me point out that NONE of the original staff was there this year.  The reason behind it is that the Con does not care enough for e-gaming so we get treated like crap and end up not wanting to come back.  This is not the first time this happend.  This happend agian in 2005 were had NO e-gaming what so ever.  We work are ass's off and provide the con with our own equipment with the risk of it getting damaged or stolen.  We know that this is our own risk but when we get buget to help replace the one or two items in question OR hWe tryed every year to get a buget to help build lockbox's but we never get it.  elp to provent this from happing what so ever......   yea, your not going to see us agian.  Or when we have the comps there are sytems sometime fail from either user error or something just give out (need to understand we keep are old rigs for use at the Con so some old power supply might go or some $30 prossecore might give) and we have no way to replace the part, we end up having to spend are money to get the thing working agian not for are use's, but the Cons.  For example, last year some ones comp had water spilt of the tower and fryed a $200 graphic card.  That person the went down to fry's to fix it and bought a lower grade card to get it up and running for the Con.  That person got NOTHING back at all.  So, you add in the fact we get nothing to help provent, fix, or copinsate for the equipment, then yea.... your going to get crappy ass's e-gaming because your always going to have a BRAND new staff that doesn't quite know how to get things running smothly.

And thats only part of the problem......  Next I would like to point out the Prizes that we give you guys...  Any one notice some of the crap we get????  This year we got (kid you not) FanimeCon 1999 programs to give out as prizes.  You would like to enter to win a 1999 program for the con?  Not to mention busted posters and the yaoi last year (will admit it give me a laugh here and there to the unsupcting secound place winners) that had to be given out.  Now dont get me wrong,  its not all bad.  We got some games and models to give out that were nice.  But it wasn't near enough stuff to be given away for 15 tournys we had.  Last year, we had to cancle some tournys because we ran out of stuff.  That is more to add to Fanimecon loving this section.

I will add more to this when I can think of it.  But for now, if you want a GOOD e-gaming better than this year.  Go or post in these forums asking the con to make are section better.  Because we have tryed and failed every year asking for help from the con.   Now we need to people that go to the con and state there opinions.

PS:  if there are and grammer problems in this post, im sorry....  dont have Word on this computer.

For everyone that signed up for e-gaming staff that worked(most likely overworked) their hours, good job.
[rant] For the other half of e-gaming staff that never showed up, %$#@ you, never sign up for any staff position again. Staffing e-gaming with ~15 people sucked ass. To the people that stole stuff, screw you. [/rant]
To the rest of the guests, thanks for being patient while checking stuff in and out and generally not breaking any of our stuff. This was my first year staffing i found it to be a poor experience and I am highly tempted to not staff e-gaming again, but perhaps I will staff again if David's proposed list of improvements are implemented.

I'm going to get all my friends from Reno that wanted to come this year but flaked out to sign up next year, so we'll have a better staff specifically for tournaments.  Believe me, I'm going to blow your show next year.

This year, gaming was pretty good except for two things. One is that there was no pc gaming this year. In my opinion, pc gaming was very fun last year. Unfortunatley, I did not see pc gaming this year, with the exception that some people brought their laptops. Second, the people who bring their laptops need space!!! Remember, at Sunday? The area with people who were playing PC Melty Blood sort of got crowded. Well, there is plenty of space in the gaming area. Thus, I would seriously suggest utilizing majority of it. Thus, it won't get crowded in the console/pc gaming area. All in all, Fanime was fun, except with those to points and probably the dealers this year.

About 1/3 of the room is separated for Arcade due to fire codes I think, so that whole far side of the room we can't use.  I am planning however to set up two or three separate sections for eGaming this year: one for our consoles, one for attendees, and a separate area for tournaments (or a cordoned-off area on our table).  We have less space than you'd think, and not enough decent TVs.

The 360s on the cabinet had some problems here and there in terms of cornering on the stick. Some new people playing the game decided that button mashing was the way to go, and rotated the bloody thing so violently smashing buttons everywhere, but before that the setup was pretty stiff for most HAPP players.

Besides that, Initial D for 1.50 was pretty absurd. I saw that 1.25 was standard at some other local places, but a dollar would have been more reasonable.

I also heard a fair share of complaints about Animelo rather than Fever.

I was more concerned with the lack of TVs with composite/AV cables more than anything else, really. Having a bunch of classic systems hooked up is always a pleasant thing (and I certainly enjoyed it), but it was really difficult to find a working TV to use when such a large portion of them are being used for Brawl. I know this is mostly out of the staff's control, but perhaps I (or others) could bring some RF adapters if new TVs aren't a possibility.
Title: Re: E-Gaming/Arcades Suggestions-Feedback thread for 2008

Arcade:
- Japanese-style (or at least fully-functional) sticks on the fighting game cabs
- $1.25 for SuperNova2 was an awkward price. If it weren't for Mordyan, I'd've put $1 into the machine and then been stuck without any more quarters.
-Nice selection of games, though. Especially air hockey.

Console Gaming: The only thing I played was Rock Band. Next time, make sure the TV has good speakers before hooking up that game - it was nigh impossible to hear at max volume.

Post by: Tetsuo9999 on May 28, 2008, 06:41:32 PM
More TVs with composite cables are a must, as it was really difficult to find a TV to use past noon since most of the vacant ones were only that way because newer consoles didn't work on them.

If the budget is preventing new TV's from being used, then perhaps RF adapters is a cheaper solution.

Post by: AmazingKenchan on May 28, 2008, 10:40:16 PM
Budget does seem to be the problem, and the one good composite TV I brought got busted.  It's way too much to ask of the staff to bring their own TVs.  I went out on a limb this year and kinda busted the inside of my car doing so, I can't do it again.

Yeah, exactly. It didn't help that everyone would swarm for the composite TV's for Brawl, leaving everyone else who wanted to play another game in the dust.

Worst case scenario, we could probably get a dozen RF adapters and make all the current TV's usable with newer consoles.

I was a bit sad that I brought 30-40 VC games and didn't get to use them at all because of Brawl.  I have on the list to bring more Wiis next year, so expect other games besides.  I was kinda hoping people would want to play some Mario Kart, but ah well ):

Well, the game's only 2 or 3 months old, so I'm hoping that it won't dominate things next year. Perhaps I'll bring my own two TV's next year and just use those.

There is too many BRAWL......

We should just limit the amount of consoles that can be used for the same game.

I wouldn't mind so much brawl if we had more TVs and more consoles to be honest.  It helps alleviate big masses of people around a single console.

Arcades were fuckin awesome this year. I'm glad I got my ass whooped so many times in MvC2. Really glad to see hardcore players show up. The only thing which I took back with me is this picture of the best I did this year... did I mention I got spanked 4 times in a row by an Omega Red/Jill/T. Bonne team?

But that presents the problem of getting more TVs and consoles. More consoles is probably doable, but more TVs isn't that easy.
