Sorry for the noob qustion. i'm planing to be a part of the masquerade and i have some questions about the skit,
can the skit have fighting in it? like with a sword that's aproved my the rovers of course.
also is it 1 person per costume? or can 1 person do a quick change durring the skit?

Since this seems to be the closest I can find to a Masquerade Questions thread: I remember hearing that one year walk-ons did not have their own music, but rather worked within something preset.  Can anyone answer whether or not walk-ons will be using their own audio in 2010?

Thanks!
Title: quick question
Post by: lunarknight on December 19, 2009, 11:31:56 PM
I'm not sure if this was the right place to ask this

but the question I have is the use of words in scripts used in masquerade. I was curious as to what words were good, bad, and border lined between the two. Obviously I know what words are not tolerated. But some words I'm not sure about. For example "bastard"

Yes, you can have fighting in your skit. However, yes, the sword needs to be approved by rovers.

The "quick change" depends on what you mean. We have had people in a costume, and they "tear off" the top layer (sometimes even on stage) and have a costume underneath -- which would be fine. We have had people go offstage and add a mask to their outfit (such as Ichigo from Bleach putting on his hollow mask), or put on a coat or something, which are also fine. If for any reason you need to completely change costumes, that's not allowed, as it is one costume per person.

I hope that clarifies it :)

You are welcome to bring your own music! However, we DO require music so if you do NOT provide music, we provide something for you. :)

Thanks!

Anything that you hear on normal broacast TV is fine. As a rule of thumb, the S-word and F-word are prohibited as well as any derogatory words (n-word, f-word, etc.) that would be considered offensive to a racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, class, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation. Say that 10 times fast! :D

I was wondering also how much control we have over the stage since I wanted to control the light settings to go on and off at certain times.

I know that the fanime stage ninjas won't be able to do it because they are busy with other things and won't remember the timing. So can our own stage ninjas control the lighting during those times?

The lighting is all controlled by the Union staff for the theater (in this case, the Civic). We are not in any way allowed to touch the light board. Any and all requests for special lighting can be requested in advance. However, you need to remember that the more complicated you make it, the more likely the lightboard guy (who has very little involvment with your skit) will be able to reproduce it. I sincerely recommend you make the instructions REALLY simple such as "Start skit with lights down; at 1:05 flash lights, etc. Also keep in mind that the lightboard guy may not have the exact music timing due to the fact that he's not running the music (the sound guy is).... so your lights may not go off at 1:05 exactly. It's easier to have a queue in the music (when we say "Here I go!" in the script, about 1 minute in, flash the lights!"_. I hope that helps.

Do you know if they're planning on using the new sound system this year or do we need to block our skits around having the line array speakers on stage again?

Well I simply need the lights to go on and off at certain times which are more or less roughly in 10 to 20 second intervals.

Congrats to you!  :D

Forgive me if I missed where this was posted, but I only saw the time limit for skits.  Is there one for walk-ons?  I'm guessing about 45 sec, but would like to be sure...

Also, will we be able to have a handler with us in Green Room?  What about "backstage"?  My handler would not come on stage with me, but would be helpful for costume handling and the such...

How is the stage set up?  Is it going to be a ramp up to the stage, where people will see us before we officially get on stage?  Or will it be more of a proper stage, where we will be completely on stage when the audience can see us?  And with that, will the music start when we are on stage?  Or prior?

Do we sign up for craftsmanship judging on-site? Or can we do that in advance?  And how many slots will there be for judging?  (and, by rote, will this particular bit of info be posted closing to registering time?)

Thanks so much!

Hi. My friends and I wanted to participate in this years masquerade, but we really don't want to be disqualified for being stupid or have to change everything the last minute to still be a part of it.

We're looking at doing a skit which has a number of anime characters in it with just two fans having a conversation about anime pairings. Out question is does everyone have to be in cosplay (i.e. those two fans)? We understand half of the awards given are for costume construction and these two wouldn't be eligible for those awards, but our group is leaning more towards the performance side of the masquerade, and although we could set it to a series with everyone is in costume and character I personally feel that it would interfere with our own performance of it and take away some of its value.

Also, is there a person limit to the skits?

2. Registration opens on April 1, 2010, at 11:59pm.

Just wanted to clarify, since April 1 at 11:59 PM is the end of the day on April 1, the first "full" day of reg is actually April 2nd?

I'm sure this sounds awfully silly and nitpicky, but I like to be sure on these things ;)

I can't remember the official start and end times, but if you want to be in it you need to leave your whole afternoon open after 4 for the rehearsals and the meetings and such. ^_^ Usually it ends around 10-ish, if I recall correctly.

4 is the rehearsal time, 5 is when everyone more or less gets into place, and 6 is when the show begins and will end roughly around 10 depending on how many performances are up and how long they last. At least that is more or less the time frame. Also if this is your first time make sure to be calm and well prepared for it. Also and most importantly have fun with it.

this might be an odd question, but would there be a way to invite cosplay guests who've judged at other cons to be judges at fanime? (the problem is they live about 1500 miles east of CA)

they're judging at another con for 2010 on the same weekend, but I think they'll be free in 2011 (they've never been to a con in CA either)

edit: they've been officially announced as guests for SanJapan http://www.san-japan.org/v2/convention-information/guests/artist-cosplay/we-heart-card-games-cosplay (Texas) and Gale Kon (Illinois) and have judged at previous events in the area.

Yes, it opens on April 1, NOT April 31.  So, in the evening on April 1, and April 2 is the first full day.

Yep, I've asked many times -- that's the way it has to be set up :(  Sorry! So, please, plan on blocking with the speakers.

Also, as a piece of advice to people; PLEASE try to be as close to the front of the stage as possible. If you are in the back (or taking up the whole stage), many people in the audience CANNOT see you...

The walk-ons are staged like a fashion show; you walk on, do a couple of poses, and walk off. It's a very short timeframe.

Also, will we be able to have a handler with us in Green Room?  What about "backstage"?  My handler would not come on stage with me, but would be helpful for costume handling and the such...

There isn't a green room per se. Basically you are seated in the audience where you can see the entire show; we bring you backstage a few spots before your turn. You need to be in costume and ready-to-go. If you have large parts for the costume, they can be left backstage and you can be brought up early to get those on before your performance. Each group is allowed 1-2 stage ninjas for assistance, and we also have our staff ninjas to assist. Our staff will NOT help with costumes, you must bring your own person for that.

How is the stage set up?  Is it going to be a ramp up to the stage, where people will see us before we officially get on stage?  Or will it be more of a proper stage, where we will be completely on stage when the audience can see us?  And with that, will the music start when we are on stage?  Or prior?

It's a proper stage. The music will start when you request it to; that will be a choice in the database when you register.

This year we will have people register for a judging slot. Once you have that slot, you will not be able to change it. If you miss it, you will not be judged for Craftsmanship (only for performance). First come, first serve. So, if you absolutely have to have a Saturday judging slot -- you will need to be in the queue to register on April 1 at 11:59pm.

Thanks!
Marisa

We do not have a budget to fly people out here; judging is a staff position and at Fanime we do not provide things like flight costs for our staffers. We are volunteers and we pay our own way, with the exception of a staff badge and a guest badge and some added perks for judges. If they are interested in coming out and working for 2 days (Friday and Saturday) as judges, considering what I have said, please have them contact me at cosplay@fanime.com

Two questions:

First - If my group and I register for the masquerade (and actually get to perform), are we required to stay the entire show, or can we leave sometime after our performance?

Second - Again assuming that we get to perform there are a couple of people that may want to watch. Do they have to purchase a day-pass badge in order to watch the performances?

The trick to that is if you receive an award, you won't be around to accept it because those don't come until the end (and never assume you won't get an award until they announce everything and say you don't..you might be surprised!).  So something to think about :)

Just my humble two cents..take 'em as you will!

Based on angeljibrille's post about the time frame, the expectation is that you stay until around 11PM. Things could run late or even end early, depending on the situation.  I would say if you need to depart before 11 for any reason, let her know and get it pre-arranged, or be prepared to make those requests in registration when signups are live. Depending on how early you need to leave, you might need to request that your entry be bumped up in the run list as well, so just keep that in mind too.

Traditionally it's required that you have a badge to access any big convention event, especially one like Masquerade.  Yes, it's a bit of an inconvenience to buy a badge for a day for one event, but look at it this way: the money for your friends to come see you perform helps keep the convention going. :)

Worst case scenario, there is a very high chance that your performance will find its way to YouTube about a week or so after the convention ends. While it's not in-person, your friends will still be able to see what you did that way!

This is our first attempt at something like this, hence the questions. That said, everybody has to start somewhere, right?

We don't expect it to be successful, at all - but we'll do our best to at least make it look like we tried.

If you're talking about the prize that I think you are, that's the Frank & Son prize and it's a company award that there is high competition for. Based on what I've seen win the award (it's given at both WonderCon and SDCC) you REALLY have to go over well with the audience.  Look up Pinky and the Brain for ComicCon and you'll get an idea of the kind of crowd response that F&S looks for, as they were one of the first entries to win that award when it started.

Not to try to make the decision one way or the other for you, but I figure you might want to know that as you're thinking about it.

Personally, I would suggest looking at both Fanime and WonderCon and think about where your costume will be best received.  Think about what the audiences of both events will expect, perhaps look at what has been entered in the past on YouTube and seek out what has succeeded in getting a good audience response.

As for your sister? I suggest doing something cool for your sister anyways in exchange for your "torture"...i.e. treat her to a good dinner the next day or buy her something nice from the dealer's room. If the costume is that difficult, I am sure she would appreciate something nice in appreciation of her hard work...any awards you might receive would be a bonus.

i know there's the 2min 30sec time limit, but how long do we have to set up our stuff and remove it afterwords? also, is it ok to have it like 2min 35sec? or does it have to be exactly under 2min30sec? cause my group's skit... we kind of are struggling to fit it under 2min and 40sec :(

For onstage? Or backstage?

For backstage, I was under the impression that there were few, if any, resources for preparing oneself there, so I made my own plan to do the majority of my preparations at my hotel. I figured out that if I put on my makeup, wig, and base bodysuit in my room, I could put on a zip-up hoodie to cover it and walk over with everything else in a plastic garment bag.

For onstage...I couldn't begin to tell you, but my guess is that you would have to bring your own and get ninja assistance to set things up.

In previous years, the only time you are 'backstage' (or actually I'd call it in the stage 'wing'), is a few skits before you go ON. You get up from the audience a few skits before yours, wait to one side in a mush of people and their props that go on just before and after you, and then go on for your turn. There is nothing back there to use, or to change behind, or sit on. No chairs, nothing, should be counted; the chairs there generally have staff sitting in them ;). You stand there before you actually walk on. It's possible there could be a folding chair you would borrow. .....but also maybe not. On the subject of tables, I remember seeing tables, but they were covered in backstage 'stuff'. People's props, etc. So. Bring everything you need!
However, if you bring say a folding chair, I'm sure you could set it aside in the stage wing for a ninja to put on for you, for example.

Edit:
This is from other years' experience, but maybe it can help answer some questions. :3
- If you're not already in costume, you need to be, before you actually arrive at the masquerade. There IS a restroom there, but there's also people with the same idea or touching things up. Better to just wear a cloak on your way to the show than to try to put anything on when you arrive. There is NO backstage to speak of, no greenroom. There's a hallway, and it's full of cosplayers with giant wings and swords and people trying to get down those last few dance steps-- and that's before they seat all the cosplayers in the audience, to wait their turn to go on. If you can't sit or fit in audience, you'd better ask for a early number in the run order. :)
- There's little bits of space in the stage wing to store backdrop stuff. However, it was PACKED last year with giant backdrop cubes and monsters. No wonder the rules say to clear it with the staff first. Definitely clear it, so there's space for your item!
- If you bring a prop or stage item of some kind, bring HELP to carry EVERYTHING in one go. If you can't carry your chair, or prop yourself, you'll need a ninja, because at the end of the show, you have to haul butt to get everything out of there immediately. When you make your item or if you have to construct it on site, make sure you account for quick teardown.
- On lighting: ....don't make the lighting people do confusing things. They don't know your skit, they don't listen, and they will mess up your cue. Yeah, you can ask the person to turn the lights off at a spoken word, but they may not even hear it, or may be talking to someone else on headset at the time. Three years ago we had a lighting cue, and yes, they did do it -- Early! Don't do lighting cues, is my advice. Just don't write it in. (Imagine a dramatic skit where the lights need to go off at a dramatic line. Now imagine them going off well before it. Yeah.) And a problem with your 'strobe' effect is that you're going to have some really crappy youtube footage of it. Many video cameras unfocus when it goes black. So you'll end up with a big blurry fuzz for a skit, probably.

I know in the past there has been a limit to the number of people that can be in a given skit and more people needs prior approval.  Is there an email address I can direct my question to?

12 people, 2 stage ninjas. If you need 1 more stage ninja due to large props, please let me know at cosplay@fanime.com

are there any prizes? wondercon has a $500 cash prize and now i am wondering if i should skip fanime's masquerade and do the one at wondercon. the costume i plan to enter is a lot of work to wear and my younger sister is the one stuck in it and i know the cahnce at getting prize money would make her feel better about me "torturing" her XD

Plenty of prizes, but no true cash prizes. We do have trophies and usually CosWorx donates gift certificates... Also, TokyoPop is sponsoring the Masquerade this year and will be donating items.

You have 30 seconds additional (total) for setup and taking down large props. But, yes, due to flagrant abuse of the timeframe last year, we are having to tamp down this year on time. Your skit needs to be 2 minutes 30 seconds or we will cut it, but you do have the extra 30 seconds padding upon request (and proven need).

OK...as it looks right now Masquerade registration will be going on pretty soon....in about...a little over 24 hours I believe?

Can anyone tell me what they commonly ask for when you sign up, so I can be prepared to provide the info?

I know what we're doing, who and how many will be involved, and our general skit idea. I even have reference and progress photos. The only thing I don't have is how long the skit will be (mostly because we're still in the very early planning stages of that part).

I ask for all the standard contact info, and this:
A summary of your skit. Please include the anime or game your characters are from as well as what type of performance you will be doing. This should be at least 2-3 sentences and include how long you think your skit will be. If this field is empty, we will NOT approve your entry. You WILL be able to update your skit, but we will be keeping track of this field. Thanks for your help.

After you register for an account, you authenticate it, and you go back in and add:
1. People in your skit (and what characters and series they are from)
2. Judging Requests
3. Lighting Requests
4. Music Requests
5. Special Needs (large props, etc.)

HOWEVER, the initial Registration (with the paragraph) ensures you have a reserved spot (that's when the timestamp happens).

Thanks!
Marisa

For the 2-3 sentence summary, is it a general summary of the skit or is it the introductory summary that the MC reads beforehand?  And my other question is, do all members of the group have to register at the same time, or can the spot be reserved by just one person from the group?

To answer an earlier question: one person from each group registers. Then you go back in after you have your account and add the additional people. You have until May 16 to add your extra people (12 people total)

You view the Registered Groups on this page:
http://anime-online.com/fanime_cosplay/list.php

I'll be approving groups tomorrow :)

Thanks everyone!

We lose at least 10 groups from the main list every single year...  Usually more than that. If you're in the first 15 in the waiting list, you have an extremely good chance :)

Hi. :]

I plan on entering a costume for craftsmanship, but I don't quite understand something. It said I use the same name and such as from the Masquerade, but I don't have the ability to do a skit due to the fact that my friends who were to do it with me may not be able to come. So, I was wondering, how does craftsmanship registration work? Do I have to be in a skit to try and enter my costume, because if so, I won't be able to.

Also, regarding the costume itself-- I had a little bit of help making it. I'm eighteen, but I still had my mother help me (^-^;; Nothing mothers can't do, eh?) by telling me how to do it, but I did the actual sewing and such by myself. Does that still count as made by me? I don't want to get disqualified for not knowing... >__>;

Thank you, whoever chooses to help me out. I appreciate it.

Assuming I am reading correctly, it seems fine to me. Your mom was a resource and told you what you needed to do, but as long as you did the actual work itself, it still counts as made by you. You may have been told how it was to be done, but it was up to you to interpret those instructions and execute them.

Many people go on line to find out how to do something, others follow tutorials in books, or go to friends or family who may have creative knowledge (the aunt who quilts, etc). You went to Mom..that's not horribly different, I'd think :).  Essentially, it's still you that did the work to take that advice and make it into a garment :)

You can enter craftsmanship as a walk-on. No need to do a skit unless you want to do one.  (Although without a skit, you're unlikely to win for performance, and it probably does lower the chances of a grand prize.)

If you received help on the costume, it can still qualify for craftsmanship, but please, please, please let the judges know what you did and did not do on your own.  It is highly probable that if you present a costume that you did not entirely make and therefore can't explain how you made certain parts to the judges that they will assume that it was entirely bought (and therefore not eligible for craftsmanship) if you don't  let them know that the reason, for instance, that you can't explain how the tunic was made was that your Mom made it.  Parts of the costume made entirely by people not in the group, I believe, are not eligible for craftsmanship judging, but you can be judged on the parts that you did make.

Should be fine. :) Just make sure the wheels are not going to scratch the stage. We've had skateboards before though, so I don't see how this is a problem.

GROUP APPROVALS DONE

Please check here:
http://anime-online.com/fanime_cosplay/list.php

If you have a "PROBLEM" next to your group, you have a couple of weeks to fix it, then I'm going to bump you out.

So far it looks like everyone on the waiting list has a very (very) good chance of getting in, so I would prepare your skits and everything as needed.

People who are asking for over 2.5 minutes -- we aren't going to approve it. I'm sorry. We are on a very strict timeline this year. I will only approve it if it's setup time; music/performance will be cut off at 2 minutes 30 seconds.

People who applied with costumes that don't work (Disney, etc.) within our framework, you can talk to Stage Zero.

Many thanks!
Marisa

You're allowed a handler, so you should be OK there. What you might want to do is let them know how long you need to get suited up so they know how many entries ahead of time they need to pull you from the seating.

As far as "my mom helped me" costumes, those are perfectly fine. The advice earlier about saying who helped you is the best advice. Also, people who are in a group and one person in the group made the costumes -- just state that (that can actually net the person who did it a Design Award).

========================

This isn't just directed at you, this is directed at everyone who keeps sending me questions about "what's allowed" (sorry if I'm a bit frazzled on this subject *sorry*):

****USE COMMON SENSE***

I keep trying to tell people this (but no one listens cry Q___Q) our rules are to prevent the people who order their entire costume from some place in China off of eBay tailored to them for $99.00 and then pretend they made it themselves. Also, those who buy a costume from a friend/seamstress/etc. and try to pass it off as their own. We want SOME creativity put in here. You don't have to have made it top-to-bottom from scratch, just put in SOME effort of some sort (like going to the store to find the different pieces of your costume). Do I care that you got your Vampire Knight locket from eBay? Of course not! :)  Do I care if you went and bought your entire costume from "Jan's Cosplay Shoppe"? Yes we do -- that's prohibited.

If you are doing a skit, we honestly don't care if only a tiny fraction of creativity went into your costume as long as something was attempted. If you are participating in Craftsmanship judging, the judges are obviously more particular. But then I get questions like "Zomg I didn't make my shoes, wig, etc." ... don't make this too hard!

We don't care if you bought a wig (goodness no one expects you to make a wig, that's crazy) or shoes (what are you going to do, kill a cow, skin it, tan it, etc? >.< ?) or hand-making your accessories when you can just buy them from Bob's Crazy Anime Store.

Now, if you ARE doing Craftmanship judging and you, say, style your wig to look like a character, or customize your shoes to look like a character's shoes, or, yeah, the crazy (and talented!) people who die-cast their own weapons and props... then you get BONUS points. We aren't going to require that you do these things, but the judges will give you kudos and probably extra nudges towards a possible win if you do.

This is officially the LAST time I'm going to answer questions in this vein for 2010. Please stop making it so hard :) just follow the golden rule which is "don't buy a pre-made costume from someone" and you're good.

Thanks!

How much lighting support will we get?  Is spotlights possible to do? different colors of light? dimming? blackout?

Extremely limited options. Generally it's fade in, fade out, lights up, completely black. No spotlight. Sometimes we have colors, but it's not guaranteed.

i see mine was apporved but i had a few questions in my entry, was the entry the right place to ask questions and thus they will be answered later on or do i need to contact some one directly about my concerns? my concerns were i was planning to have some one sew part of my costume for me to save me some time, and the costume i made for my sister is huge, hard to move in and very hot.

Put this in the special needs section of your entry and if you need a response, e-mail me at cosplay@fanime.com as well.

Thanks!

What is the exact date and time for Masquerade this year? I assume it is at San Jose Convention Center (SJCC) Room F this year.

Thanks,
- Richard.

Masquerade Registration is at SJCC Room F on Friday and Saturday.

The actual event itself starts at 6:30pm on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium.

Do we need to upload our own audio by may 16 or do we just bring it with us?

Please bring it with you for when you check in at SJCC F at the Convention.

I have a question?

How is chosen the place you will be in the masquerade?

Is it by how do you sign in, random, by request or any other way?

It goes:
Large Costumes (like really large -- impossible to move in)
Kids ('cause they get tired if they have to wait forever -- this is if a group has someone under the age of 14 in it)
Everyone else

"Everyone else" is first-come, first-served as far as numbers go. Usually the first 10 groups are reserved for the special large costumes and kid entries, so you can get 11 - 50 depending on when you check in (and yes, you can request a specific number if it is available).

If we have stage ninjas, when and where should we notify you of those? Should we just bring them with us to the check-in? I know we are only allowed two.

Hooray! Good luck everybody. - Elizabeth'"

Is this true? If so, is it going to be a part of the masq, or a separate event? All the Masq groups are already determined and totally unprepared for this announcement. When did the staff plan on letting the groups know about this?

Ah, you beat me to it. I was going to try to confirm this as well. I'm not sure how this will work out. If it was going to host WCS, I want to participate, but my group already has 6 people.

Most likely they'll do it like the first year at the NYAF only the groups that qualify (2 - 3 people) will be able to participate for the WCS.

Honestly don't know why Fanime is accepting this with so little time. There is only a month left and is not fair for people who would have like to participate and didn't register because this was not known

Only way I can see it working is if they push it for next year. I doubt there are many entrants that have the required 2 people only rule (according to WCS rules and regulations). If they do host it this year, I do not see it being a part of the Masquerade, and rather a separate event on its own. As the poster above noted, there is only 1 month left to the con and all Masquerade entrants have already been accepted and determined. To have it part of Masq, I'm sure people will dissolve groups. But even that would prove faulty since its too late to register for Masq.

Marisa (the masquerade director) stated a little while back that WCS would not be involved. However, I guess some things may have changed?

Hopefully she can confirm one way or the other. With all due respect, until she confirms it, I consider it heresay.

This won’t affect Cosplay Spectacular (the Masquerade) in any way, it’s a completely separate deal and there is absolutely no overlap. We wouldn’t be giving out prizes or anything else; this would be held almost as a panel and is not a Fanime-sponsored event other than letting them have panel space. There are no technical services provided for this event; it's just a room with chairs.

I’d actually had several people ask me to bring this event to Fanime, so I was just responding to demand by accepting the panel request despite my initial hesitation due to the negative press a few years back.  I just talked to someone about it yesterday, and there is no finalized information about anything, so that's why there wasn't any sort of annoucement. Also, as it's not a FanimeCon event, we wouldn't announce something like this anyway - it's up to the panel people to provide information on their panel.

I am not running this event either; I just assisted with providing a panel room.  If this manages to go off without causing any issues, we may consider some sort of more formalized event next year. At the moment, however, this is just a test. Thanks!

This has nothing whatsoever to do with FanimeCon's Masquerade / Cosplay Spectacular. Everything is staying just as it was.

I hope that clarifies things!

I am guessing that this could affect those who have already entered Masquerade. Some people may decide to opt out of Masquerade, and some people may consider doing both events.  With Craftmanship judging signup tomorrow night, is there any additional data that can be provided so that people can make their decisions sooner than later?

Yes me and one of my Masq partners are wanting to do WCS as well. How can we find out more information about this "panel"? Are we going to have to perform? Is it just Craftsmanship? Fanime is right around the corner and we have a lot of details we need to iron out for this.

Uh, I really don't have any info as it's not a FanimeCon event.

It will take place on Sunday, so it's after the Masquerade is over. It won't impact the Masquerade at all.

It's a room with no technical setup (no audio), so I am presuming it's a craftsmanship type deal-- but I really don't know.

I've asked the person who coordinated the panel setup to post here:
http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,14007.0.html

Please no more questions on this topic here as it has nada, zip, zilch to do with the Masquerade.  Take it all to the Panel Forums http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,14007.0.html

I'm a bit concerned because I went back the next day to just double check it and the timestamp had changed to the current time. Does that affect the order or does the original time stand? Would hate to have wasted staying up to register. >.<

Grats you found a bug ^_^! Fixed now.

For those interested in the tedium of php, I had meant to process the date from the database, but instead processed the date from today. Anyway, the dates in the database were still all there -- and now the web page is fixed to show that timestamp.

So all is good. Sorry about that :)

I saw that '11:00am - 12:00pm on Saturday, May 29' still has spots, via your post; It was my group's second choice. Is there any way to get this slot, instead of the more random slot we were assigned for friday? A group member I have can't do that time on friday :(

Please PM me your group number. This is weird because almost everyone got their first choice. I had to defer a couple of larger groups to their second choice, but I don't think anyone got a 3rd choice and definitely non one got a random.

This is the way it was selected:
1. By the time you registered for judging
2. If you were fully registered on the list
3. How many people were scheduled in that slot
4. If you were on the waiting list
5. Again, by how many people were scheduled in that slot

Then I marked full times on the list. So if you got a time not in your top 3 choices, lemme know, because that shouldn't be the case. :)

Absolutely fine.  Also, I had a couple of people tell me that one person can't make the judging time they picked, but everyone else can. In a case like this, it's perfectly OK for you to bring the costume of the person who isn't there with you and show that to the judges. If it's being judged for individual and/or group, have the person write up a little paragraph or so about the construction of the costume to give to the judges.  If it's for a design award (where one person in the group made all the costumes) then you don't have to write the paragraph.

Silly question: I am assuming that the hour we have is more for logistical reasons than because we'll be using a full hour for our costumes, correct?

There's only two of us so I don't think that we need that long, but I don't know deeply the judges will be poking at our stuff either :)

Yes, at the moment we have about 15 people assigned per hour (usually 2-3 groups). So the judges will spend time with you, but not the full hour.

The times I listed where we have lots of space only have 4-8 people registered during those hours. The "full" ones are 15 people. Thanks :)

The people during that hour will be served first-come, first-served. If everyone is there at the same time, it will go in order of when you registered.

My group is 76th on the list, so will we actually be able to perform?
Should we come to the 5 pm meetup in case?

You will know by 12:00pm on Saturday, May 29, if you got in to the Masquerade.

Basically you need to do the following to qualify:
1. Check in on Friday (any time) or on Saturday by 10:00am at Room F in the San Jose Convention Center.
2. Bring us your music so we can get that checked in just in case.
3. If you want Craftsmanship, please sign up NOW for a judging spot - and go ahead and get judged.

If you do all 3 of these things, you have a very good chance of getting in. If you did Craftsmanship, we will allow you to be in the Masquerade Fashion Show (the walk ons at the begining of the Masquerade) even if you don't get to present a skit.

We advise that you bring two chocies of music -- one for if you score a "skit" spot, and the other for a "fashion show" walk on if you choose to do that.  The fashion show is basically the individual / group walks out on the stage, poses, and walks off.

We can do several Fashion Show entries, but in order to participate in that you MUST participate in Craftsmanship.

Thanks!
Marisa

Masquerade comes free with your badge. You just might have to commit a little time to stand in a line for a primo seat is all. ;)

Are "gunshot" sounds okay to use? It would be between dialogue and music and stuff like that, but would it push the PG limit? I don't want to cause commotion with the audience.

This is not a problem; people have done this in the past.

hi for my skit i have to change super fast from human to centaur mid skit, this only involves me pulling furry pants over my skirt & shorts attaching the body & putting on hooves, but for this i need my sounds prolonged or stopped for a short time. also i'd need the lights seriously dimmed 0r turned off (for illusion)  ???, is this possible?

What size would something have to be to be considered a "large prop" and therefore needing approval?  We have a prop (description was added to our profile), but it's dimensions are pretty compact, at least to us and compared to things I've seen onstage previously.

Figured I'd also ask here because I might not be the only one who needs to know :)

1. Show up at check in as early as you can (preferably Friday) and let us know about this.

2. You MUST show up at the Rehearsal for special stuff like this.

3. Let the music guy who takes your CD at checkin know, so he can put a gap in your music.

Thanks!

It's something that:

A. Is difficult to move across the stage.
B. Needs to be stored backstage.
C. Is difficult to move in (like a Gundam costume, etc.)
D. Takes a long time to set up / take down.

PLEASE let us know when you check in at Con if you have something that qualfies.

I put info on it in our online stuff, and we'll likely be bringing it when we check in (which will be a little before we do craftmanship so we only have to make one trip ;) ). I think it only qualifies for B because while it's not huge, it can't sit in our laps and it could be awkward for someone sitting next to our stage ninja if she held it.

I just wanted to say that we MIGHT not being doing the masquerade. Epona is so hard to wear that depending on the weather we may just focus on cosplay gatherings (nintendo and zelda) since wearing epona too long really hurts and if its too hot can make my sister really sick if she is in it for more than 30 minutes.

SO for those on the wait list PLEASE do show up at 12pm on saturday because you might get our spot. i would hate for our spot to get wasted...

With 13 groups on the waiting list, I have highest confidence that your spot, if you vacate it, will be quickly reassigned so no wasting will be had! ;) But yes, I'm sure the difference of getting in or not will be in the "showing up" part!
