Title: Mahjong?
Post by: Akita on May 08, 2012, 05:53:40 PM
Anyone want to play?  Depending on who wants to play, I may bring my tiles (although be advised, these are Saki tiles [lol])...
I am trying to learn points and what consist of "chonbo" and "furiten" and "no Yaku".  Trying to gain a different experience than playing through tenhou

It is heavy :(
I could bring mine...?

Don't we need four players though?

If you're worried about the weight of the bringing your own set, you can always email Tabletop/Social Gaming (tabletopATfanime) and see if they have a mahjong set mixed in with their other games  ;D

You need 4 people to play, but in my experience once you get the 4 people together nobody wants to STOP playing....

I'm pretty sure once you set the game up, you'll have a bunch of people interested in watching/ joining. :)

All of you should come to Tabletop Gaming to play Mahjong (Riichi).  A group of friends and I played last year.  A few of us have sets.  Some of us know how to score winning hands so no worries for beginners.  I'm a beginner and I just learned how to score.

no it's not heavy (lol)
I am commuting this con, so I sorta want to stay light as possible.  Regardless, I think we can get some interest in so I'll bring it
and yea, I was thinking Riichi Mahjong too.

Uh oh. I've only played with Chinese people...
Riichi is Japanese style right?
And I'm sort of terrible at mahjong...you aren't pros right?

if I was pro, I wouldn't be asking for help scoring -lol

we aren't putting money into this, so don't worry.

Hahaha I didn't mean it...completely

Could I ask you for some pointers? XD
The rules confuse me.

just post it here, we can probably figure it out...

  :D

Dora and under-doras are the big ones...
And to ron do you always need a yaku in your hand? or is that just certain versions?
Title: Re: Mahjong?
Post by: Akita on May 12, 2012, 10:00:48 PM
Dora and Under Dora are always the next tile
So it goes 1>9, E>S>W>N, then Haku>Hatsu>Chu (this is the one I am blurry on too)
ura Dora is only available when you put in Riichi

As for Ron, it's Yaku, but it also has to do with what you made that yaku out of.  I had a Dora 3+my Wind, and I couldn't call Ron, and it became a furiten (soo pissed off that match).

furiten is when you try and win with a tile that you have already discarded before right?
or is there more to it than that?
Title: Re: Mahjong?
Post by: Akita on May 12, 2012, 11:30:56 PM
pretty much, or you are waiting for the winning tile, and you can't call it, even when the opponent drops it (due to not enough point value in the win hand you have)
Title: Re: Mahjong?
Post by: udonoodle on May 12, 2012, 11:54:26 PM
I was just reading a article about furiten...

And I got even more confused.
It seems...complex? Like I can't just look at  my discards and make sure i'm not going to furiten that way.
...what exactly makes a furiten?
Title: Re: Mahjong?
Post by: Akita on May 13, 2012, 08:18:13 PM
basically, the most common furiten comes from the fact that you Ron off a pai that you dropped.  Another Furiten is you didn't call Riich, and the opponent drops the pai you needed, but with that tile you can't make a yaku -meaning you must Menzenchin Tsumo it to get the yaku.  Another really bad one is once you call riichi, and the opponent drops the pai you need but dismiss it (which basically means you must draw the winning tile).

I think that's all for Furiten
ex:

you called riichi and you are waiting for either a 3 or a 6 from your 45.  However, if you dropped a 3 or a 6 previously, you are in furiten.  If you were able to call riichi, and your opponent drops either, but do not take it, it's furiten

Oh. Darn. :) Thanks for explaining! Doras and under-doras still confuse me...but so does the whole point system  :-[
Pai = tiles right?
Will people just be playing mahjong all the time? Or are you/someone going to set a time/date?

at this moment, no idea....
I'll be there in the gaming room at night though, playing weiss schwarz or Blazblue (probably watching)

Maybe I should bring my set?  (It's just a normal one...)

When you make a yaku with a wind...for it to count does it have to be the wind you are...or the round wind of the table?
Title: Re: Mahjong?
Post by: Akita on May 15, 2012, 08:38:07 PM
well, I am bringing my Saki tiles...  although I haven't actually opened them yet (lol)

Wind tiles are, weird.  I am starting to get to understand them, and basically this is what I got:

1) Ton (East) Tiles are one modifier
2) Your position tiles are one modifer (meaning if you are in the East position, and you pon a Ton, that is two modifiers that score towards point.  You CAN also screw up, however, and not be able to call Ron too, so call out sparingly)
3) Yaku Pai (Haku> Hatsu> Chu) are also one modifier
4) Collecting any other wind does not matter, other than to count towards "Toi-toi" or "Sanan" or if you are lucky "Suan"

Oh yes I know. But I was just wondering if it would be easier if I brought a set as well!

I guess that is all my questions. I still don't understand all of riichi...but I'll learn :)

I hope this actually works out!

Also I'll be there with my friend and we both play! If you see a Gendo/Hoenheim or Hijikata(from Gintama)/Hoenheim running around, give us a shout. I'll have my set in my car, probably, with a Junk Mat~

I've decided not to bring my set~
But i've decided this is the easiest way:
Can I pm you my cell# and you guys/gals can just send me a text when a game is up and running? :)

I'm going to be at Tabletop after 10pm on day 2 and day 3 because of Fanime main events.  I may show up earlier on day 1.  It depends on other Fanime activities I choose to participate and cosplaying with friends.

I think the best way is to check Tabletop whenever you're around.  I know my friends and I are most likely going to play during the night because of their schedules.  I look forward to meeting new players :)

@Akita and @udonnoodle, I'm sorry we didn't meet.  My schedule didn't go according to plan.  My friends told me there were games in the afternoon.  Day 1 was a no go because of reg and a really slow start for me.  I was at Tabletop on day 2 after 10pm.  I was at Tabletop on day 3 just after midnight.

Are you interested in playing and live in the South Bay?  PM me if your interested.

I think I saw you on day 3 evening.  You were playing with a guy wearing a black wig.  I know him.  He's really good.

Yes, I played Day 2 and Day 3 night.  If you saw a dark grayish card table and either Hitsugaya or Allen Walker cosplayer, that was me.
