What is the relevance of this being here?
The entire store is on sale. They are closing (wah...). This means everything is a little cheaper than usual. Including the anime goods. How much are the discounts? Not so sure.
Just saying if you want something to blow your money on before the holidays. :D
Wow, Media Play is one of those stores that I figured would always be there. What a bummer. I used to buy anime stuff from them all the time. As of recent, I've favored Fry's or Bestbuy, but it still feels like something of a loss.
And thus closes my main manga purchase store. Dammit.
The Great Mall is devolving now. :( First Wonderpark, then Kyun, then Media Play.
Aw crap...I had no idea about that.....and I work at the Arbys over there! Great...so whats gonna replace Media Play once its gone?
What~!?!?!? I just went there, and they seemed fine... A week ago. Well, maybe it's like those Furniture stores that always say Closing but nver leave? Well... that's too bad. It was always the hang out for us Otakus like the 2004 Christmas Gathering~! =w=
When are they closing?
Quote from: "Ska_Kitti"When are they closing?
I'm not so sure. All I know is that there are signs all over the place that says store closing. It's a great loss....
Reference to Spiritsnare, Wonderpark; was the ONLY place to play the Bust a Groove arcade game. Dang it, I want to play it again...
-Kyun was closed because the person that owned it refused to pay his rent. Then he left. - -
DUUUUUUUUUUDE!!! They CAN'T close! .T_T Man, what a bummer.

yeah...i got lost/ditched there. xD
NUUU THEY CANT CLOSE. *sob* now ill have to go to borders. which sucks.
kyun closed? when!?!? O______________O THAT STORE WAS FSCKING AWESOME.
yeah, i hope its like the furniture stores that say theyre going to close...but never close. -_-
noooooo media play T_T.
I better get down there. ASAP.

I plan to go today and buy DVDs like crazii... hopefully my picks will be there.

;_; really now... the stuff there was so cheap! >.<
it would be cool if we had something like a "fanime board/media play closing" gathering. xD
This is freakin unbelievable. It is the only decent store the Great Mall has, once Media Play closes for good - Great Mall will be dead to me.

I was buying Ramune there on a daily basis, and occasionally a pack or two of Reverse. And then the Vans Skatepark closed, and with it went DDR 5thMIX and DDRMAX.
That was my other favorite haunt. The arcade at Vans.

Haha, now I go show off at the local DDR Extreme machine located at the internet cafe...
Stuff like this always sucks.
I remember when this happened to Suncoast and Sam Goody at Oakridge. >.> Boy that sucked, there were no decent anime store in the mall to go to. I really hope that doesn't happen to the great mall.

Ditto to when they demoed the Sam Goody and Suncoast out of Eastridge way before it was remodeled.
This really does blow because even though I buy a majority of my R1 anime from Best Buy, Media Play beat out some of there deals 25% of the time with that "19.99 New Release" deal on select titles. Oh well, its too bad. I thought it was only a matter of time before it bit the dust like sam goody though. :(
Suncoast is a terrible place to buy DVDs if you're looking for a good deal. 70% of the box sets/dvds there are always full price, or inflated by 5 dollars than if you went to Best Buy or some other niche shop.

Huh. Guess that's why it closed then?
hmm i never went to the great mall enough...y is it closing now T_T...i was going to blow the last of my money on JTAF...grr

Same here.
For some place, that's a place that hasn't been touched by the elite, as the players I saw there didn't even know what an Extra Stage was.
Maybe it was just because of the time I happened to be there.
Quote from: "Jyunishinsho"Ditto to when they demoed the Sam Goody and Suncoast out of Eastridge way before it was remodeled.
And the "new" Eastridge isn't exactly better, either, IMO. >.>
Gamestop is a definite plus, though. Gamestop staffed by a dude who can instantly tell me that Beatmania US's not on their reserve list without checking is even better.
Never heard of Kyuun, what did they sell there?
Only reason to go to the great mall is Dave and Busters! LOL
I have to say that I miss wonder park as well, kinda suprised it went away since they seem to have a lot of buisness. I am guessing the rent for the amont of space there was way too expensive.
So is Media Play allready gone or will it close down at the end of the month? Wow Good Guys and now Media Play.. how sad!
Quote from: "Chloe"It was always the hang out for us Otakus like the 2004 Christmas Gathering~! =w=
That was a most awesome time. Maybe we should have a last minute gathering at Media Play this weekend. lol.
this weekend is JTAF...so i wouldnt be able to make it...
This just in, from kotaku.com:
Media play will be shutting down all 61 of its stores nation wide. Prices have been slashed anywhere from 10% to 40% in a last minute clearance sale, including games and animation.
THIS INCLUDES XBOX360 EQUIPMENT.
Even more reason to go.
~Chun
Quote from: "lyricaldanichan"Never heard of Kyuun, what did they sell there?
The premise of Kyun was (more or less) "$1-5 stuff" -- which included plenty of Japanese candy, snacks, and drinks. Furthermore, they had Pocky at prices lower than Media Play's abhorrent tags ($3?!).
It's where I got my Japanese-post-box-styled ceramic bank. <3
Quote from: "lyricaldanichan"Only reason to go to the great mall is Dave and Busters! LOL
Not when one's under 18. :( There's no place for me to go anymore, 'cept the aforementioned net cafe.

Too bad 360s themselves have been sold out. XDDDD I would've laughed so hard if they still had 360s and they sold them at 40% discount...

The word is that Namco had a contract that they'd be the only arcade in the mall. D&B moves in, Namco throws a fit and hauls its stuff out.
But D&B is not even worth going any more since they removed the Battletech Pods, and replaced it with a lame 2 player madden game. Oh joy of joys...
UPDATE
aka Jyunishinsho's gossip of the day
Like what some people may think, whether Media Play will close; to me, it's now very lofty.
Reason? My brother and I went to it today, and lo and behold, all the signs that says "Store Closing!" were blocked off by little signs that say "30% off! 40% off! 50% off!".
What I can assume of this: marketing ploy in it's beginning. However, looking around the store, the entire wall of anime goods are gone. All that are left is manga and anime dvds. Even the Menchi frying pans are gone.
Not true... the shirts and posters are gone, but any anime toys, like the Menchi pans, are still there last I checked. (last night)
Not really worth the rush over there, 20% off a 28 buck price tag on a dvd, when I can still get most of those cheaper at Best Buy or Fry's.

Ara? When I was there (7:30 pm), there was nothing on the walls, except for the Menchi pans and Hellsing tote bags. Then after a while, I came back and they were gone.
Man, I remember the days that I would rollerblade for about 20 minutes so I could buy a Leninade from BvMo!, and then find a manga to read/buy. Without a Media Play to have fun in, a Vans skatepark to make fun of the kids that beef it, or a Kyuun to buy my necessary goods.... let's just boycott Great Mall XD
Question, though: what store do you think will replace it?
Hopefully one with DVDs and manga... [-o<
Quote from: "NachoManLance"Question, though: what store do you think will replace it?
BED, BATH, AND BEYOND LOL.
You know, it could very well happen.

Noooo! No boycott! As much as its been buzy around the mall these days, the Arbys that I work at still needs its customers! ^^
I think another Media Play-esque entertainment store or at least a Nickel City or something like that would be a good replacement! ^^
Quote from: "Moogleborg"...Nickel City or something like that would be a good replacement! ^^
Boy, that would
kill D & B's arcade. XD
D&B may be next to shut down if people stop going there. Another company is buying D&B hoping to improve operations.
I've noticed a little something about that area of the Great Mall...
Most of the stores in the Media Play, D&B, and former Vans Skate Park area seem to be...how should I say...closing? I noticed this seeing a few bargain stores closing, some reopening, this and that. But it's a little interesting thing I noticed. Perhaps the Bermuda Triangle of the Great Mall?
Quote from: "Jyunishinsho"Perhaps the Bermuda Triangle of the Great Mall?
Means if Nickel City were to replace it, it'd die within three years.
Heh, Nickel City XD
Well, Media Play was practicaly the only big store there that could offer movies, games, anime, and any other electronic goodies. Like a cooler version of Best Buy (IMO). I don't think they'd attract the same sort of customers unless they replace it with a store that can meet their similar needs. So I just have a hunch they'd replace it with a store franchise like Media Play, albeit more expensive ^^;
Eh, I'm only a teenager. I'm probably wrong.
I was there today at the great mall and I check out Media Play, to me they had good selection since I don't live around the area. I was able to buy games on my PS2 and one anime dvd for my friend for x-mas. it's sad that it's closing.
The great mall is pretty much a shitty mall with so-so stores. Kinda sucks that this is happening but they can't compete with malls like Valley Fair. If they got rid of those nickle and dime stores and put in some stores that people care about then it would be worth going. Also Vans Skate Park closed all over the place which is sad considering it was a positive place for kids to go. There was suposed to be on in Sacramento but that fell thru :(.
Speaking of that, I wish Dave and Busters would build in Sacramento! They would sure get the buisness since there is nothing to do here! I don't get why they have 4 of them in LA but one in the bay area! :(

No kidding? You think they would move Wonder Park elsewhere instead of shutting it down definatly. Kinda lame if you ask me.. haha
Wow well battle tech is like what 15 years old or so? Not suprised they took it out but I wonder why they never updated it with better graphics?
I know you guys are under 18, but it is nice to have a chuck e cheese for adults. lol
i went there today, and wow, their manga is so...unorganized. i guess they cant be bothered, since theyre about to close. but they have almost no manga left.

While battletech is 15 years old, they often had major updates with graphic, gameplay and pod changes that would rival most modern high end PC or arcade games at the times. Advanced play was a few little readouts that didn`t quite work all the time back in 92. Advanced play now was full voice systems, ejection, weapon interfaces, multiple huds, several different layouts, jump jets and frequent mech rotations.
It was still worth about 4-5 bucks a play a few months ago.
So sad that they're closing.
ALthough I would disagree that GM is a shitty place. There's lots of good places to find cosplay-worthy and trendy clothing.
Maybe that's because I'm Asian (most GM goers are Asian).

Great Mall
Media Play closing its doors really is too bad but the Vans Skate Park shutting down hurt. No more 5th Mix, cept for at Chuck e Cheese on Tully here in San Jose and they could improve on D&B's if they put some playworthy games and lowered their prices. It's pretty close to $1.75 for 1 game (3 songs) of Pump, extra stage too if you make it but they hardly maintain those pads so they can be sketchy. But I guess the place is self propelling to a certain extent, a bunch of rowdy guys come in, get drunk and lose the ability to controll their wallets and spend blasphemous amounts of money on games that suck.
...and thats what really grinds my gears.
Quote from: "YoureMyHiro"...and thats what really grinds my gears.
Hahaha. Family Guy reference. Awesome.
wow...this is some harsh stuff. i used to play game demos in there. and thus, a loss has been taken by all.*plays taps*
but seriously. the only things that great mall has going for it now is the food court and johnny rocket's. and that jumbo-bean-bag-thing store.
huh-ho, God help that mall if they decide to take away my only opportunity to eat a beef n' cheddar and chili-cheese fries with cinnabon as desert, after which i rest for 10 minutes on one-a-dem comfy spheres-o-satisfaction. i swear, great mall. take away your last remaining redeeming factors and heads are gonna ROLL!!!

And I'm so suspicious of that particular machine. Last I played it it took three missteps to drain my bar to near-fail.
Somehow I think they've set their difficulty at 8. :(
Man, I was planning to go there tomrrow and I hear there's barely any manga left. Looks like I need to drive to McCarthy to get that Negima.

For about ever Sunnyvale Golfland was the best place to go to play the latest and greatest arcade games. Last time I was there it just wasn't the same tho I am suprised fighting row was still crowded. Gotta love those Capcom Otakus!
I haven't been to the Milpitas Golfland in a long time but I guess they are the beatmani headquarters for the bay area now?

Just about. I mostly play the Drum Mania game there, often enough that I'd rather bring my own drumsticks than use the ones they give you behind the counter. Mine are too thick though, so I'm always worried that I'd break the cymbal pad :P

I'd say Sunnyvale Golfland wins as Bay Area Bemani HQ for IIDX alone. <3
About Media Play, haven't been there recently, but it does appear it will go out of business, despite my guessing...

I've heard that quite a number of times, and you've confirmed it yourself, last time we met IRL.
My hope was that they were to upgrade it (and DM) to V2. Looks like it's not happening, though.

Blame BestBuy.......
SV Golfland has Guitar Freaks and Drum Mania V2 when I was there a week ago!
They also have Mario Kart which is by Nintendo and Namco (you can select Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-man as characters!)
I also drooled at The House of The Dead 4 which Dave and Busters has. Too bad I didn't get to play because that place was packed!

I must find a way to get there. :O
Mario Kart Arcade GP's also been out for a while. I think all the Golflands have it by now.
But V2...ooh, sweet Bemanigasmic goodness.
I played V2. I had fun playing the Triathalon once again, as well as Miss You.
-However, I'm quite fond of the SVGL...
