Can we please get an old-school anime room? I mean, seriously, some of the best shows I've seen are old school. Let's get some classic stuff like Mazinger Z, Grendizer, Cutey Honey, Gundam classic, something...
I agree! It would be great to have more of the 1970s and even 80s shows. Devilman, Cobra, Goku Midnight Eye, Ace o Nerae!, The Rose of Versailles, Tomorrow's Joe, there are so many titles.
If you want to go real old school you could intersperse short titles from Digital Meme's DVD collection of early anime. Silent with benshi accompanyment and subtitles.
After all it's not really old school if it's in color.
Ummm, is Ranma too "new-school" for this whole thing? Like, the first few seasons or whatnot.
At this stage, Ranma is just what we need, along with 70's and 80's anime.
I'd love it if they played the old Getta Robo and Getta Robo G series (known as Starvengers in the States). I think Getta Robo G was the very first anime I watched back in my kindergarten years =P
Put on the Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors), and Space Battleship Yamato
What kind of old school room would it be without a nice, solid block of Mach GoGoGo (Speed Racer)?
Also, Bubblegum Crisis would be cool too.
We actually did show old school anime.. nobody watched it.. :(
If there is some huge request (more then 50 people), we can give it a go again but yeah...

You heard it people! Let's give it our all. And this time, let's make the most of the room (hopefully, they advertise it as such)!
Don't forget Saint Seiya and Giant Robo
I'd definitely be interested if you guys did an "old school" room. Last year I don't think I wound up spending long in the video rooms at all due to just a general disinterest.
Something like this could be really fun, especially if it was well advertised. :D

I think we would if we didn't have other problems last year :(
Actually it would be awesome to do a KOR marathon, too bad AnimEigo doesn't have the rights to it
anymore.
Put on Urusei Yatsura
The problem is that today's anime fan would consider Gundam Wing "old school."
Fans today know everything about Inu Yasha and yet know nothing about Ranma or Lum.
They have no interest in seeing their father's anime.

I'm sorry, Gundam Wing is not old school. UC Gundam is old school, along with Gatchaman, Tekkaman, Cutey Honey, Macross, Akira, Project A-Ko, Lum, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Memories, Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon is borderline old school, Samurai Troopers, Lupin the 3rd TV, Dirty Pair TV, Meitatei Tanten Conan, Mazinger Z, Uchu Senkan Yamato(StarBlazers), Ideon, Astro Boy, Princess Knight, and other anime that was aired between 1968-1991 is old school. anything after that is new school and that includes Gundam Wng and the other AU Gundam series, and Evangelion onwards till now. i

That was an anime too? I'd love to see that! I'd be interested in sampling some of the really ancient stuff that nobody's ever heard of before, like "Sora Tobu Yuureisen", "Jarinko Chie", "Sero Hiki no Goushu", "Periinu Monogatari", "Mirai Shounen Konan", "Esteban", "Romio no Aoi Sora", "Haha wo Tazunete Sanzenri", etc. For the TV series, probably only one episode is enough, but it'd be great to have a sample.

I don't think Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon should count as old school either. Anything that played on a major US TV station after 1990 should be disqualified from being called "old school".

Dragon ball and Sailor Moon, when dubbed, are not old school. However, given how little the subs are showcased publicly due to the sheer size of the fansubbing community behind those shows, and the slow but sure disappearance of interest from those shows (as noted by how many cosplayers you see anymore of those shows) showcases a serious case for them being old school.
Seriously, remember when the joke "Maximum Sailor Moon Cosplayers only to a hundred" made sense?
The unfortunate effect of having an old school room, is that it tends to be a dark barren room, that is frigid cold cause the AC is on high and no one is in it. (Well, maybe 1-2 people will show up)
The other half is that most of the old school stuff is probably licensed, so Fanime would have to show their versions of the series.
And if it dubbed or edited, even fewer people would probably show up.
If Fanime does man up and make an old school room, I'll show. As long as they actually include in huge effin' letters that they actually have one, I'm there.

Dragon ball is old school but still it was made 1986 not DBZ
old school room would be awesome!
my suggests (trying to keep them ones not yet said):
future police urashiman (this show is dope! think a bad ben stiller and owen wilson comedy with time travel), captain harlock, galaxy express 999, 8 man, kimba the white lion, any old masterpiece theatre anime (Romio no Aoi Sora is one that someone has posted earlier, that one is probably my favorite of the masterpiece theatre anime).
i defintiely would be interested in 8 man and Mazinger Z and Urusei Yatsura, etc. (aforementioned classics)
Is 3x3 Eyes too new? I really loved that anime when I was a child...its so good!
3x3 eyes (while i really like it) came out in 1991 I think, 2 years after DBZ (1989).
It seems to me that the "cut-off" so to speak should be Dragon Ball Z 1989; any anime produced post DBZ (i.e. all 90s anime and later) should be considered "new school."
I'd rather like to call older anime series "classics" rather than "old school". I'm still big fans of titles like Ranma 1/2, Slayers, and Saber Marionette.
Ah. Those were the days. They don't make them like they used to anymore.
All these posts and NO mention of Hokuto no Ken? WHAT IS THIS? Do you guys NOT know your roots?
Quote from: Otakuya on April 21, 2008, 04:38:26 PMI'd rather like to call older anime series "classics" rather than "old school".
I think they're different sets. Not all "old school" anime are "classics", and people throw around terms like "instant classic", so not all classics are "old school".

And y'all may boo me for this, but what about Voltron? The original, not the crazy spin-offs.
Quote from: Kandybar on April 23, 2008, 08:51:49 AMAnd y'all may boo me for this, but what about Voltron? The original, not the crazy spin-offs.
You only get a boo because you called it "Voltron" instead of "GoLion". I'd so totally be up for GoLion! I don't think Fanime can show it, though, because I think it's going to be released on R1 the day right after Fanime is over. Although Media Blaster has a dealers room thing, so maybe they'll surprise us with a sneak peek? That would totally rock!
Must... keep old school thread... noticed! *lifts thread higher on the list*
I think that's enough for this year. The video schedule has already been posted (the otaku god said so on http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,9279.0.html at April 27, 2008, 11:43:43 AM in case you missed the thread), so it's been up for over a week. If they change the schedule, they will probably disappoint lots of people at this point.
Save your energy for May 27th. On that day, let's start lobbying for more old school anime in Fanime 2009!
I'm reviving this thread, because I think it's a great idea. Can we get an old-school room for '09? I'm talking seriously old-school like the stuff mentioned previously, Otaku no Video (live action, I know, but hilarious!), Sailor Moon (1st or 2nd season subbed), Urusei Yatsura, Tenchi Muyo!, Lupin III y'know, old stuff that got the 25+ crowd into anime. And GoLion. Seriously, as marathon late-at-night awesomeness.
I'm glad to see that there are people out there that can appreciate the old school like Tekkaman Blade and Maison Ikkoku.
Oh, hey, I hadn't noticed that we hadn't brought it up yet for '09. Woot woot, Old school! Please?
It would be nice to have more old school anime at the con even if it didn't have it own room.

Does anyone remember any of these shows: Sei Jūshi Bismark, UFO Senshi Daiapolon, Yuusha Raideen, Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman or Yattaman... All Late 70's - Early 80's
I'll try to spend some Con time here... But I'll mostly be working in the dealer's room.

My bad... I got caught up in the title list above... I forgot there is just so many hours in a day... Next year's list is fine and it gives me a reason to return next year if this video room works out.
Sei Jūshi Bismark was not a successful anime in japan that's why many haven't heard of it or remember it, but it came to the states in the mid-80's and was re-editted... retitled to Sabre Rider and the Star Sheriffs... Bummer, now I have that thme song in my head again. It was broadcast on Ch26 at the same time Robotech was on CH44. I wanted to know if anyone has/seen the actual Japanese episodes to find out why it failed.
One last thing... Any of you out there old enough to remember a local program on KTVU CH2 called Captain Cosmic?
I hope we get a lot of people to check out that room a lot of good stuff! Kinda neet to see Kimagure Orange Road and Yamato!

Sure do. I remember watching on Captain Cosmic's show (with 2t2) Ultraman and The Space Giants (Ambassador Magma) with Goldar, Silvar, and Gam. There were my first intro to a tokusatsu series. I also mailed away for the decoder card so I could read the secret messages during the show.
Thank you! You just gave me a reason to stay around longer on Monday. Will definitely check-out the room during the weekend.

I still have my decoder card and I just framed it about a month ago in honor of Bob Wilkins... It was sad that he passed away this past January from complications from Alzheimer's disease. I've seen tokusatsu series before the Captain Cosmic show, but it amazed me that he took such a risk to air them on american TV. I heard that KTVU gave him this fluff job just to serve out the remainder of his employment contract... they told him make a kid's program and gave him a few thousand dollars... But, Bob took the challange and rubbed it right in their face, because his show was the highest rated local program in that 4:30pm time slot. He aired the old Flash Gordon series 1 & 2, Space Giants (Ambassador Magma), Star Blazers (Uchu Senkan Yamato - Quest for Iscandar & Comet Empire), Ultraman, Johnny Sakko and his Giant Robot (Giant Robo), Spectreman. This caused other stations to look into Japanese entertainment... CH.44 ran Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman), Robotech (Macross Saga) and Sailor Moon (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon). Ch.26 ran Jinzo Ningen Kikaider, Yushaa Raideen, UFO Senshi DaiApolon and Sabre Rider and the Star Sheriffs (Sei Jushi Bismark)... KTVU in the early 90's revisited what Bob started by broadcasting "Ranger" series, redubbed anime, and Ultraman Tiga... And here we are today.
So in a way, I believe that if it were not for Bob Wilkins, we would not be here discussing "Old School" anime.
BOB WHEREVER YOU ARE, THANK YOU!!!
I just want to say thank you all for all this buzz. Like I said though I need your help in promotoing this room. If there is no support for it durring the con we can never do anything like this again. So please tell your friends and your otaku community, now and during the con about this room. Help me help you!
Im all for some of the good ole stuff, but imo theres too much old school stuff on the schedule this year and not enough of the new stuff v.v
I would love to see more Urusei Yatsura and not just the 'movies' that get played at almost every other Con. It'd be really cool to see some of the best known UY episodes. While UY is great I think a full length movie might scare some people off, but if you give them a few episodes they just might be intrigued. I loved to see actually an AnimEigo room at fanime next year.
