Coming out of my 1-year retirement for a comeback sale/clearout of my collection. Got my spot for Thursday, wait listed for Friday. Are we looking at a full utilization of the hall this year?

The first batch of Waitlisted people should have received an e-mail from me a few days ago with instructions on completing their registration.  If you are still waitlisted, I will be letting the next batch through to process their registration in a couple days, assuming there are still spaces left (Which, at this rate, there likely will be, but no guarantees).

Wow, are you really fulfilling all the available spots already? Are you expanding to the entire hall? Sounds like you're going to have a huge turnout if you are, congrats. Use this as an excuse for more budget next year  ;D

A main question that I have would be if dollys/hand trucks are allowed to bring stuff in to the swap meet hall. Every year, we are told that it is not allowed but people still get to bring stuff in with them. I want to know since this year my friend would be having less help with the items than previous years. And if you were wondering, we were part of the group that had boxes of things but no dollys, so we want to know what the policy is for this year. Thanks

lol, use 'em up to the door, once inside, no more cart. Union rules. Plan ahead for once you're at the door. I used to strap all my boxes of stuff together with a ratcheting strap and just drag it by the strap itself or carry the whole thing on my shoulders. And yes, I had a lot of boxes too, and 2-3 people helping.

Hello! I'd like to know if there's a target date for Swap Meet registration to go live/how much notice you think we'll have before it goes live. I've missed out for a few years now due to being out of the loop and I'd like to make sure I have a shot this year. Thank you!

If taking the past 2 years as a trend, I'd say about an hour's worth of notice will happen before the registration goes live... lol, sorry Ben, gotta bust your chops a little on that one, it's gotten continually worse every year. I know it's probably not your fault, but somebody has to say something, right?

Good luck to the all sellers this year. I'm fully "retired" from selling and attending Fanime in general.

In the future, do you think we could get a little more than an hour's heads-up?  I check these boards pretty regularly but don't use any social media, so I was pretty lucky I caught reg opening up as soon after it went live as I did.

Edit: Read over the last part of my comment that was previously here and thought I came across a bit sarcastic, especially given what I mentioned above.  Wasn't my intention for it to sound that way.

Last year, it was less than 24 hours notice. I also jokingly commented that the next year maybe we should expect the announcement to come days before the con with a 1-hour heads up... Little did I know they would take my sarcastic joke to consideration. Luckily I had a feeling I should check FB, though I caught it about an hour AFTER reg opened.

I don't even want to think about what next year will bring for you guys. To be fair to Ben though, I think it's fair that reg was opened during the day time, as opposed to some rando time in the middle of the night/morning and during the middle of the week.

Less than a month to go... when is reg opening?

I know I say this every year, but this is legit going to be my last year of selling. I'm moving on in life and changing hobbies, and looking to unload pretty much my entire figure collection. I may need to rent a uhaul truck for it all, lol. But in order for that to happen, I need to sign up for a spot! Don't keep us in the dark here Ben, what's the good word?

No complaints from me, as a seller. IMO you've got our end on lockdown and good to go. Thanks for another great year.

Bump cause I don't feel like creating another topic - any more news concerning swap meet, aka my main and sometimes only reason for attending Fanime year after year? Reg coming up sometime in May I'm guessing? :V

I got nothing but kudos for you guys running the swap meet this year, 'grats on the new venue, hope you can secure it again for next year. I'm guessing the half hour earlier check-in was to make up the half hour earlier closing time? Kind of would prefer the shoopers would have been given an extra half hour early as well, but I guess that was an executive decision. Didn't hear any complaints from people not knowing where it was or anything. I even saw you guys telling one guy to pump those brakes, no bringing in extra stuff after being checked in.

Hearing all these complaints about dealers coming in, lowballing, then reselling in the dealers hall kind of makes me want to sell game stuff at next year's swap, just so I can have some fun with them. My friends and I love handling those kinds of characters. Unfortunately I don't like selling my personal collection of games and related items unless I specifically bought them to resell. Sunday @ 5 works for me

I would like to request either Sunday, or if Saturday, before or after the musicfest.

somebody nominate a place to do this for this year. I'd suggest a place but I haven't lived in SJ for over the past decade. I dunno where all the cool kids hang out at, much less a place where all us old fogeys with our walkers and canes can congregate and complain about those damn kids playing on our lawns

Seller tips:

If you've got a lot of stuff to sell, practice laying it all out at home. Measure out your space, mark it on the floor and set up how you plan display stuff. This may sound stupid or a waste of time, but presentation is key to bring people in to look at your wares! If you've got a nice thought out display, people will see that you care and treat your items respectfully, and this can help with sales. If you just dump over your bag/box/bin of stuff on the ground with no mind to set up, you may not have enough eyes to even look your way to see what you've even got to sell. Because, really, would you rather buy used stuff from somebody that keeps stuff clean and orderly, or somebody who picked up a random grab of stuff off the floor in their room?

post-it notes or a notepad with easy to detach paper to hand off to people in case they make an offer or want to come back later to redeem a bid or special offer/price you told them for items you were going to sell is a good idea as well.

Most everybody has a smartphone nowadays. Most responsible adults have credit cards and/or PayPal accounts. Consider taking PayPal for payments, and/or requesting a card reader from PayPal so that you can accept credit cards. The fee they take out is nearly negligible when selling large ticket items such as figures.

Large inventory of stuff, lots of things to keep track of? Print up a list of what you've got and cross off as the night goes on.

Sitting on the floor sucks. Bring a chair of some sort or something you can turn into a makeshift chair, something that's easy to sit and stand up from. You'll be getting up from it a lot.

Lay out everything in a way that you can see everything, yet if you need to get up and out of your spot, you're not hopping over any of your stuff. Worse case scenario, somebody tries to snatch something from you, HOPEFULLY you won't need to give chase but if you've got somebody with you, you can either send them to get help or go yourself. Never really an issue in all the years I've been selling, but you should always expect and plan for the worst.

Collectors/Resellers: First of all, I sympathize with you, but at the swap meet you're going to see a lot of unhappy/unfriendly faces. If you've got a lot of mint NIB figures/games/comics/whatever, and are organized well, realize there's going to be haters that will accuse you of being a dealer. My only suggestion is to price fairly, check your prices against eBay/Amazon/online retailers and price accordingly.

Also, you're not the only person who does this, so don't be offended when you come across a "smart" shopper that tries to make you look bad by saying x is overpriced, and in a very loud, extravagant way as if announcing to the whole room. Unless you've blindly thrown a price on something way above market (again, check those online stores for prices), they may just be doing what you've already done - buy low, sell high.

If I can think of more I'll post again

Come over and visit Clockwork Alchemy! We have tea!

CA has a lot going on, more than last year. There's a lot to do; martial arts, airship races, LARPs, fashion show, musicians... It's a change of pace from Fanime. There's a free shuttle bus and registration covers both Fanime and CA.

I gotta be honest, I liked what I saw at CA last year, even though I only meandered the halls for less than an hour there. It just felt it had a bit more laid back and mature group of attendees. Was certainly a nice change of pace to the busy and crowded convention halls where Fanime was at. Made me feel pretty comfortable and relaxed.

This new spot sounds amazing and I love the times! Like many others have said; hopefully no linecon- -but this time I (and a few friends) will be selling instead of buying.

I was wondering if it's possible to put four people on the seller's agreement/seller's permit? That way two of us can work the first night then the other two work the second night.

usually when signing up and filling out the forms, you're filling out for each day anyways, so your situation kind of sorts itself out (unless you're looking to put both reserve spots under a single person's name)

As much as I would love to maybe help out on staff, I kind of need to sell at the swap meet this year to fund myself for the rest of the con.

+ Requirements: Depending on if I decide to participate in the swap meet on Thursday and/or Friday, will be arriving back to the room around 1-2am
+ Contact: PM here on the forums or email me at vioia_ai[at]yahoo[dot]com

QuoteThe problem with holding swap meet any earlier is conflict with Dealers hall hours. I don't know the specifics, but my general understanding is that if dealers Hall is open, swap meet can't be. Thus, it takes place on. Day 0 (dealers hall still closed) and starting at 7:30 PM Friday (once dealers hall is closed).

Haha, my assumption as to why the swap meets were held so late was right! My friends had been asking me every year as to why we were setting up and selling so late into the night, and it was honestly the first reason I could think of. In a way it works out fine IMO, because it allows us that sell on Friday night to go to the dealers hall and price match what we could potentially sell things for.

QuoteFor the most part, I'd say 90% of sellers came with all of their proper paperwork and weren't in violation of any rules that Decantus set out in the numerous emails he sent to sellers. I understand it can be frustrating when a policy that has seemingly been "overlooked" in previous years is enforced suddenly and strictly (see: not using hand-trucks/dollys), but again, these rules often come from the venue and violation of them could jeopardize our ability to continue using said venue for future events. Of course, once we start enforcing these policies consistency is key in order to avoid any semblance of favoritism, as well as preserving fairness for all involved.

I think this begs the question, was swap meet kicked out of the convention center and the previous venues because of the hand truck/dolly violations? My friend said it best, if there's one thing that's been consistent over the past 4 years, its the swap meet location always changing, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

I figured the long delay in letting people in to the swap meet hall was for fire hazard/max occupancy regulations. From a seller's standpoint that made it both good and bad, as it meant keeping prices we had set in place for the duration of the meet, because at around 10pm-11pm in the previous years, we were starting to look at lowering prices to make sales for those who were still debating buying something. This time around we knew we still had a line full of people waiting to just get in, so marking stuff down prematurely would have turned into a loss. Like I said though, its both good and bad, 'cause then you don't get those people who were having those debates with themselves to come back in a few hours to make that purchase and possibly look to see if a markdown had occurred.

Overall though I also would like to say thanks and good job to the staff. I know I'm usually one to decry and yell foul here on the forum for the swap meets on a yearly basis, but I felt you guys did a bang-on job for what you had to work with. I can only hope for next year that we get moved back to the convention center, if the event hasn't been banned from there totally.

As for the future, I don't know if adding a Saturday block would be beneficial. Having it on Thursday means the swap meet sellers get first crack at people's wallets, and Friday is the last we see of people's full wallets. Saturday there's too many other events occurring, people's funds have already been significantly depleted from 2 full days of dealers hall purchases, and I personally am already exhausted after staying up to 2am-3am for two nights in a row. (What can I say, I'm a lightweight when it comes to convention party schedules all the young'uns can pull)

love it. Made me want to drive my Chevelle next year to the con

I'm guessing the OP forgot about this, their last login was April 30th. Anybody wanna take charge and propose a time/place? I'd suggest maybe tomorrow or Saturday if Friday is too short notice. Is anywhere at the con a good idea or maybe somewhere nearby and offsite?

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTS: stuff @ Swap Meet 2014
May 21, 2014, 09:07:20 AM
what's goin' on Fanime forums. Long time seller at the Fanime Swap meet, decided it'd be best to get a little advertisement going for the spot my friend and I will have at this year's show. Also get a little transparency, as we're always hearing that we've been accused of being dealers selling at the swap meet for having too nice a setup/inventory/whatever. This year, since everybody is on even footing and my inventory of stuff to sell is low I'm HOPING the usual doesn't happen, but we'll see. In any case, a quick 'n dirty little photo and list of what we'll have for Thursday and Friday night:

Pic of everything getting ready to be boxed up for the con:

List of just some of the things pictured / what we'll have:
