Title: Gothic Fairy Tale theme, what do you think?
Post by: Maskenlav on May 31, 2012, 10:50:49 PM
I think that is a major plus for next year fanime and a step away from the average and typical sports or heroic themes. So with that being said do you guys think that theme would ACTUALLY help ante-up the stakes and make next year totally non stop kick ass? I mean I saw alot of formal looking cosplays so with Clockwork Alchemy being here and lots of formal types of cosplays do you think it's going to RAISE everybody's expectations ten fold or place all cards down and step away from the table? I personally think it will help ALOT since there will be Gothic spin offs to many original costumes! :D

I'm for it. My friend Geli is planning on a Gothic mad hatter tea party.

I think its a tired, boring and unoriginal idea. It's an anime convention, I would expect anime themes, not lowering the bar to satisfy a pop-culture fashion statement.

Agreed

Just seems like fanimecon is becoming a subculture con instead of a animecon.

Just chiming in, but is that the official theme for next year? I couldn't make it to the Closing Ceremonies.

I don't believe that we're lowering the bar - We pick our themes to be fun while capturing the spirit of FanimeCon.

I actually really like this idea. I mean. When I first read it I thought of all the original costumes I could make for the cast of FairyTail. I'm excited. There is so much possibility for this. (Just to be clear - It is Gothic Fairy Tale Theme?)

I really like the idea. I have always been a fan of Grimm's fairy tales. There was always darkness in truth.

I've always believed a con theme lives and dies by the amount of awareness and participation going on.

"Why do you have a giant tennis ball?"
"...Uh, do you know what the theme is this year?"
"Really...?"

Getting some of the 20,000+ in on any type of theme challenge makes it a success in my book.

Just some general thoughts for the idea focusing primarily on Gothic: Trinity Blood, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, Hellsing, Castlevania, Black Butler, Alice In Wonderland (Alice in the Country of Hearts). Btw, I'm not being very particular on "gothic" here Haha.

Do the themes really play a part besides being featured on the Fanimecon images?

There were no sports activities or events this year.
I really do want to add a gothic twist to my upcoming cosplay but 'no one' participates and 1 out of 50 people are aware that Fanime actually has a theme.

well I'm hoping that people DO take note of this theme because sports is kind of overrated in anime so having something like romantic Gothic Fairytale will spice things up and make everyone spice up their cosplays as well. Can you image? a Gothic Mario and Luigi next year? I'm sure someone's bound to do that!

I don't know if there's any fun to be found in grim and stoic at an anime convention, but hey, you guys run the show. I just pay to stand in line for 6 hours. Lol.

Everyone has their own tastes, personally I like this one, but there is always fun to be found. I mean. Certain panels run every year and they sometimes have nothing to do with the theme, neither do the GoH, neither does the AA, neither does the Dealers Hall, and neither do a lot of things. In eight years of attendance here I think I have rarely ever gone out of my way to match a theme.

I am curious though because I want to know what you think a good anime theme would be in your opinion?

Really? You've never seen gothic styles in anime?  And i would think you'd want something somewhat popular, that most people like, so you have a lot of people wanting to be apart of and dress up as the theme.  Besides you can make something original out of an unoriginal idea.

Just off the top of my head, I'd say a throwback to 80's style anime (all genres). I think it would be interesting to see today's younger anime fans work with this kind of official theme. Not only would this be closer to what I believe Fanime has been about (at least intended to start with), but may serve as an educational experience for the new age anime fans. It could also be a bridge for both old and young anime fans to share a common theme together--something they can all get into, rather than the alternative which I believe would be limited to a small niche.

It's not about anime using gothic styles, it's about shoehorning in a non-anime theme into an anime convention.

Only my assumption, but I'm willing to believe this will only inspire people to slap together any dark clothing with a few accents, cake on a lot of make-up and call it a costume--also known as the same effort many already put into themselves before heading out to any random rock show. In fact I'll probably lose count on the all the stereotypical gothic, emo and low budget The Crows that'll bump into me due to the different perspectives on what gothic fairytales may mean to the individual.

The whole theme I find boring because it's not only overcooked in pop culture--it in itself isn't anime, but I believe it doesn't give a lot of motivation to create original works as far as anime cosplay goes.

I could agree with that being a pretty awesome theme! It would always be nice to have a little bit of a throwback to some older anime from my childhood. They do have the old style anime video room which I love and it would be nice if one year we could have just a big trip down memory lane. I think it would be a lot of fun. I would kind of like a "mech" year sometime simply because those are my favorite types of anime and manga.

Just to chime real quick in, I am actually really interested in making some original cosplays this year based on the theme.

I think there is a fair bit of interest overall in this theme and I really do think that with a lot of direction some amazing events can be planned for this year! I have hope!

I do think a return to some old school anime or focus on a specific genre, or etc, would be totally amazing too. Just my thought!

What I'd personally like is a theme based on re-visualizing classic anime. It would be interesting to see a contemporary look at cosplays based on older anime updated by the fans and recognized as such. But no, I'm just gonna get Nightwish and The Crow next year. LOL. :p

This might be interesting, after all.  There are some anime out there that have similar story lines to fairy tales, and anime that borrow fairy tale themes (Ponyo; Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi; and Pretear has been compared to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs).

EDIT:  almost forgot Folktales from Japan.

I find it interesting that the examples you use in your argument against a gothic fairytale theme are not gothic fairytale themed.  So your assumption is that people will be just as confused on what that means as you are?  You name a powermetal band (not gothic in the least) and a action movie from the 90's.  I think people have already cited plenty of relevent sources on how it relates to anime, and it certainly fits an anime con as much as "sports" or "steam punk".

I don't think there will be any more or any less in the way of teenagers caking on makeup and throwing on random clothes from their closet just because the official theme is gothic fairy tale.  ;) If you don't already see plenty of that at Fanime, then you clearly aren't looking very hard, and if what other people choose to wear bothers you so much, then either choose not to let it bother you, or don't come. If you don't like the theme for yourself, then don't participate. It really isn't that difficult, especially since most people don't participate in the themes, anyway.

Personally, I think it is a neat theme and has just as much to do with anime as anything else chosen as a theme. Anything too specific would probably shut out a lot of people who don't like whatever genre or era or other specifically anime-related thing that is chosen as the theme, so something like this works, since it encompasses people of all interests. For example, I'm not really much at all of an anime fan, but I like video games and I wear lolita fashion. Now, if I didn't have any cosplay ideas to incorporate the theme and I wanted to participate, I could wear a themed lolita outfit. If I were just into video games, I could probably come up with something similar to a fairy tale and cosplay from that, or make it more gothic, or something. Of course, I probably won't participate in the theme this year (since I never do, and I have far too many cosplay plans to change them just to have something that fits the theme), but if I wanted to, I could tailor it to my interests, since it is something that goes across genres and media. I think that a good theme does just that. Of course, specifically "gothic" fairy tales could be a bit narrow of a focus, but people not into the gothic side of it would probably just drop that and make it about fairy tales. I see the "fairy tales" part as more important than the "gothic" part, anyway. Expect to see even more Disney cosplay than usual.

Anime conventions that focus just on anime are too narrow to be sustainable these days, I think, especially with one as large as Fanime. You don't want to alienate people who are fans of different aspects of nerddom, since cons tend to encompass all sorts of people with all sorts of interests. Maybe that's just me, though, the non-anime fan, talking.  ;)

Though, I think that there needs to be more awareness of the theme if it is really meant to be used. Maybe even panels each year on "[insert theme] in Anime" (such as "The Gothic and Anime" [which can focus on not only gothic as we use it nowdays, but also as a literary style] or "Fairy Tale and Mythologial Themes in Anime" ...both of which I would probably attend, but I'd attend the gothic one for sure, as long as it talked about gothic as a litereary style!), or otherwise themed events?

Hmm~ I said that I wouldn't change my cosplay plans for the theme, but I've been planning on cosplaying from Deathsmiles for a while now. Maybe I can get a group together for the theme gathering this year? It seems to fit well enough.

Post by: Freeden on June 29, 2012, 08:56:26 PM
I don't particularly care what the theme is, but if there's a theme, Fanime should really start doing some things geared towards that theme. This year was supposed to be sports, but the only thing sporty about it were the pictures on the badges. There were no sports related activities planned, no guests who do sport anime/manga, not even special showings of sports related entertainment. It would seem to me that if you're going to do a theme, then you theme the con around that theme, otherwise it's not really a theme. It's just a topic you put out there to represent the con. If we're going to have a gothic fairy tale theme for Fanime, then Fanime should try and do some gothic fairy tale stuff, like say, maybe inviting some artists who do that kind of art or having a gothic lolita fashion show with a fairy tale theme or even inviting a vis kei band to come play. It just seems weird to have a theme and do nothing at all with it.

I'm kinda looking forward to it. I really love dressing like a Gothic Lolita, and as to seeing what new cosplay will be inspired. Honestly though hardly anyone matches the theme. If they do then it's unintentional or they liked the concept (rarely)
I think 2013 will be like all the other years: Cosplay as whatever they want or have available lol
There is a lot of Gothic fairytale anime . Also its up to the individual to as how they describe "Gothic" or "fairytale".

Hitting on an old topic:
Having older anime themes? I think that would be tricky especially here in America. People in my age group would think Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball was old. The generation now thinks that Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece (The Big Three) are getting old. That is sad O_O
