Title: Fanime Competition: Crunchyroll Expo
Post by: TC X0 Lt 0X on February 09, 2017, 01:09:24 PM
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2017-02-09/crunchyroll-announces-its-own-convention-after-surpassing-1-million-paid-subscribers/.111974

QuoteMedia distribution service Crunchyroll announced on Thursday that it is partnering with LeftField Media to launch a new anime convention titled Crunchyroll Expo (CRX) this year. The convention is scheduled for August 25-27 in Santa Clara, California at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Crunchyroll has launched a website for the event.

With only being 3 months apart and not even 10 miles from Downtown San Jose, this convention could have a huge impact on Fanime if it becomes a regular thing over the next fw years, assuming it stays in the same location.

Its pretty interesting though. Id like to go, but know how my wallet or time will manage it.

Hmm, I'll take any excuse to return to Santa Clara's con center (in fact, I'm going there this weekend for the Travel and Adventure Show).

If it gets all that large it would be moved to another venue anyway as the Santa Clara Convention center honestly isn't all that large of a facility, even if they were to spill over into the Hyatt Regency.  Using both facilities would have its own problems as well as the convention center is union to the degree that you can't pick up a tissue on your own and the Hyatt is not.

Same here. I'm actually really bummed that Animation on Display isn't going to be at the Santa Clara Convention Center this year. :/

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to seeing what Crunchyroll Expo has to offer. The one main advantage they'd have over Fanime, I think, is getting a wider variety of more popular guests, since they're in the industry. And maybe offering more free merch.

If the friends I usually go to Fanime with are going to CRX next year I'll probably go to it over Fanime. Fanime's fun but I don't feel that there's a lot of variety from year to year.

Tickets are now on sale, under "buy tickets"

http://crunchyrollexpo.com/

$40 for Friday or Sunday only, to $350 for VIP weekend

This show better have a lot to do and see.

That doesn't seem terrible for a show like AX where we know what's going to be there (if not in specifics then at least roughly in terms of types of content), but for a first-year show, it does seem pretty pricey. The regular (non-VIP) tickets are $65 for the weekend, so that's not terrible, but only if we know that there's going to be good content. (Those VIP Plus tickets are expensive regardless of content though!)

I'm actually pretty hopeful about this con. I think that Crunchyroll has the industry connections to really pull out a good show, and we all know that NorCal is a bit lacking in the large con department. It seems like it might be a bit ambitious for a first con, but hey, I guess we'll find out how it is when it happens. I think this might be a good counterpoint to AX, which has gotten far too large for its own good.

Now, which cosplay help panels should I submit...?

I agree that the cost is a little bit high (especially since both a service fee and sales tax get tacked on), but I might change my mind depending on the guests. Btw, they do have a Guest Request Form, for those crossing your fingers for a particular somebody: http://crunchyrollexpo.com/guests-crx/

Interesting news. There's always a first. Remember a few years ago Japan Expo? That one was a weird one. Guess the feedback wasnt that good with their silly in/out policy.

Seeing as Curnchyroll has been to all kinds of cons I'm sure they might be up to par. Eh who knows? I'll give it a shot if nothing else is going on.

I am definitely going to CRX this year! I can see how CRX might have the upper hand as it is closer to the industry and can bring "larger" guests or provide more free merchandise, but Fanime has always been a tradition to attend for my friends and I. It'll definitely be hard to break that tradition, and I certainly don't intend to do so or see us stop going to Fanime any time soon. As some others have said, CRX definitely seems more like a competitor to AX, like a NorCal version.

Most likely crx is heavily industry driven, so already I think it's too different than the fan driven Fanime.
Enough difference that they won't directly compete.

So far, a couple of artists, some YouTubers and some voice actors.

Some people are flat-out complaining already on FaceBook posts XD

Also, I bought my weekend ticket and reserved a hotel room recently.

Idk if the Facebook complainers are just doing it for the sake of complaining, or they're really putting unrealistic expectations on a con's first year. :P

That said, I'll still plan on going, provided that I'm able to get the weekend off. If this and the following years do well, I can imagine it being a viable alternative to AX.

^ Same here, saw a Crunchyroll Expo ad on a digital billboard while on the freeway the other day. (At least, I think it was... the ads were on a loop, but I was driving so I couldn't really stop and wait for it to show again.)

I'm objectively pretty impressed with the guests that Crunchyroll has revealed so far, but I'm personally not that interested in any of them. Guess that's what happens when you're not into that many series, though.

Also, less than 2 weeks until Crunchyroll Expo starts, and still no panel listing! They've got Fanime beat! xD
