Hokai I decided to skip buying a coat, bite the bullet and do my best to try and make one. I found a pattern that I should be able to modify fairly easily..and I can always probe questions at my mother if I get totally lost on what the pattern says X_X

But I was wondering if anyone knows a place where I could find a BIG silver zipper? The kind that would work for a near floor length Org XIII coat?

My city only has one fabric store and they don't carry zippers in that size. Does anyone know where I could get one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! X_x;!

I came up with these.  I have no personal experience with either...but they are definately worth a try.  I hope you have a lot of luck.  :-)

http://www.catameinc.com/
Doesn't list prices, you have to send in which Zipper you want and how long you want it, then they'll give you a quote.

http://secure.cartsvr.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=1457635
Might be better, it has a 60 inch Black and Aluminum Bottom Separating Zipper already listed

I'm not sure if I really want this prop, but we'll see how the construction goes.

I want to make Yuna's summoner staff, but I'm not quite sure how to make it. I've already looked at the guide on www.cosplay.com, but I'd be more interested in a different kind of way to do it.

But if not, would anyone direct me to where I can commission one or buy one  if I can't successfully make the staff? >.>;;

Got the BK mask, needs reinforcement inside or it keeps collapsing on itself. Gonna make the rest over the next few weeks.

Because I don't know how to do this better, I ripped these shots from the opening to Outlaw Star and then took pictures with my camera and uploaded them (sigh).  Also Episode 15: The Seven Emerge near the gunfight has some scenes of Melfina's back as she's running/walking towards Gene. (again, sorry if these images are too big, I'm sure a mod will turn them into links if they are)

Geta are actually quite easy to make, as long as you have access to a jig saw and drill.  You could crank them out in about four hours if you have some experience in woodworking.  The harder part is making the band for the toes, but not too terribly difficult.

I found a large pair of geta for my nephew (size 11) at Soko Hardware in Japantown, SF last year.  But we had to lengthen the strap holding the thong on them so his feet would fit.  We removed the metal cap on the underside, removed the strap, made a longer one, wrapped around the thong, pulled the strap through the hole, tied a knot, then nailed the cap back over the knot.

He wore them almost 90% of the time we were at AX last year, even when we went to Disneyland.  Still wears them.

For those of you who went to the masquarade, I was wondering if you remember what the one of the judges said the armor was made out of in the 'Record of Lodoss War' skit.

It was something like AV Foam, I've never heard of it before then.

Does anybody know?

thank you in advance!

I don't know how to make a Prinny [yes, Prinny, from the Disgaea series] costume... there's no site really SPECIFIC for this kind of costume [wandering around in a giant penguin costume is actually very rare on the internet...] I've seen examples, but I just don't see how it could be done!

This is just a general tip: Do not be discouraged because you can't find one pattern that will work for what you need.  When in doubt, use more than one to get the desired result.  Take the sleeves from one pattern, the skirt or pants from another, etc.  Don't be afraid to mix and match.  Patterns are basically set up the same way, so switching pieces is not as difficult as it sounds, plus you look like a badass to traditional, pattern-bound sewers.

BTW-does anyone have any suggestions for doing Suiseiseki's bodice without boning?  I need a pattern number or something.
Title: Re: Cosplay Sewing and Construction Support Thread
Post by: BunofGovt on June 06, 2007, 08:46:46 PM
I'm not familiar with the character and the pics I googled were not that clear.  Simplicity has a number of victorian style and renaissance fairish type patterns.  You might look at those, but the bodice looks sort of halter-type looking.  You might try looking at a halter-type blouse pattern and use a stiff material (maybe upholstery or furniture fabric) to avoid having to insert the boning material.  Sorry to be vague but hope this inspires ya.

And what you said about mixing pattern pieces is so true.  Also, look at the outfit, decide what the BASIC shape/style is.  I fashioned Ishida Uryu's (Bleach) white Quincy outfit (with the shoulder cape) from a fleece zipup jacket pattern, and a Dracula cape pattern.  I moved the zipper for the jacket to the back and lengthened the jacket to tunic length.

Yuki Cross's day class outfit (Vampire Knight) started as a woman's long-sleeved shirt pattern.  I changed the collar to a sailor collar, added two points, and lengthened and widened the bottom part of the shirt and added pleats.

I've already said too much.  I ramble.

I hadn't thought of using a halter top.  That's a good idea.  I'll have to go back to JoAnn's and pour over their pattern books, see what I can find.

Hey I'm working on some cosplays and I'm looking for some materials.  Does anyone know where I can get some silver pvc/vinyl, corrugated rubber, yellow reflective tape and 3mm 12"x18" foam sheets for fairly cheap?  Thanks for your help.

Try searching online?  Try a hardware supply place like Home Depot or Lowes?  Try a smaller local hardware story (similar to an ACE or a local owned store).  I think I got my yellow reflective tape at Wal-Mart (at the bike section) or at REI (if you don't know them, they are a recreational equipment supplier/store).

If you mean rigid foam, check a craft supplier.  If you mean something like floral foam (the green stuff), you might try Michael's or another craft store.  If you mean soft foam like what goes in pillows, then check either a fabric store (I've seen something that sounds like what you may mean in Jo-Ann's, in the pillow form area) or a futon shop (there's one in Albany that has foam in different sizes but that would cost more I think).

Oh, wait, 3mm?  I dunno about that thin ... EDIT: If you mean that stuff like the visors and cut out shapes are made from, I've seen 8 1/2x11 size sheets at Jo-Ann's, other craft stores might have the larger size.

Yellow Reflective Tape  (not very cheap though...you would probably do much better at a regular store)

I'm not really sure what kind of currugated rubber you want...but try this site
http://rubbercal.com/Corrugated_Rubber_Sheet.html

As far as fabric goes JoAnn's usually gets Silver Vinyl type fabric a little closer to Halloween.  You can always ask them at the counter, they'll be able to tell you more.

I'm going to use this thread.

I need help with a cosplay. It has these odd plastic shoulderpads that I cannot figure out how to make. Basically, I need to know if there are any materials that can be easily shaped (so no vaccumforming or anything) that either are plastic or can be made smooth and painted to look like a shiny plastic. All of the moldable materials I have seen do not look plasticy enough.

This (http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/6375/ningyou1al4.jpg) is the costume, sorry that my picture is really terrible. Ignore her hair over the edge of the shoulderpad. As you can see, there are three bumps in the middle of the shoulderpad, which is rounded. I can make a base and everything just fine, since (as you cannot see) the shoulderpad is made of what looks like two layers- the plastic covering (which wraps a litle bit around the base on the sides) and the thicker base, so all I really need is suggestions on how to make the plasticy part. Is there any sort of material that can be molded (etiher by pouring into a mold or by pressing into a mold) that either is that shiny or can be snaded down and painted to look that smooth, or some sort of thermal plastic that I can heat into that shape that is shiny, or would my best bet be to use PVC fabric and stretch it over the finished bases?

I'll be getting better screens soon from a friend, since the one I have is not very good at all. :/

Thank you if anyone can help me. <3

Can you find something that is a similar shape or that can be trimmed/cut to be the shape, like a plastic measuring scoop or mixing bowl or candy dish from a dollar store or something like that? Sorry I can't be more helpful since the picture is not that clear.

Would something like an orange juice or milk jug help?

I have seen something like the shrink art plastic sheets, which, if you are good at math you can figure out how much it shrinks from the original size and then cut a big enough piece.  If you were to lay the plastic sheet over a curved surface, it might shrink and match that shape.  I've never actually tried that, though, so you might practice with it.  Hope someone else is able to suggest better ideas!

Honestly, vacuum form would be the way to go to get that specific look, but since you don't have the means to do that, I would suggest "Friendly Plastic."  It takes some getting used to but it works really good for little props and details.  Plus if you mess up, all you have to do is stick it back in hot water and start over.

I can't recommend any stores online (D'oh) since I get mine from a friend of mine.  But I know that they sell it in pellets and in strips and in a bunch of different colors.

Thanks, you two.

BunofGovt: something liek that might not be the best, because I doubt I could find something plastic with the same shape. The closest I can find are thigh pads for playing football, but those are always foam from what I have seen, and would still need to be covered in plastic. But thank you, anyway.

miss shelby: How difficult, exactly, is vaccum forming? I have really not looked too deeply into it, since I have always assumed it to be way out of my range of ability, but would it be okay for a total beginner?
I should look into Friendly Plastic. It is shiny enough, that you know of?

I have looked a little at liquid resins that you cast into a mold, would these work? Are they difficult to work with? I have also seen a tutorial on casting with hot glue, which seems a little difficult with this project, but is that an option, perhaps? How easy is it to paint? (I would assume that I would use spray paint and a high-gloss laquer, but I do not know much about this, which is why I am asking.) I know that I can get that smooth enough, it is just of ease of technique and in getting it to the correct colour.

I also have a few new screens that should be better. I hope these help more. I have also included a shot of her hand, which I have a question on. I am planning on making her gloves, since I have not been able to find gold tulle gloves, but she has this odd thing attached to them, that looks like it is made of a bunch of gold plastic balls all glued together. Not a huge deal, except that it needs to be flexible enough to bend along with the finger it is covering (and yes, she does bend her hands in the video, so I know it is possible somehow). Any sugestions on how to make them flexible?

Vacuum forming itself isn't very hard.  Getting a place to set up a table and melt plastic is.  I don't have one of my own, I've just played with and watched one that belonged to a costume shop I used to work for.

The friendly plastic is really easy to work with though.  And you don't need to sand it any to paint it.

Casting is great but you have to be very, very careful.  I don't really recommend it for beginners; or at least nothing really big like armor.  If you wanted to try to dip your feet in, you can get some basic molding and resin from craft stores.  It's more fun to make little accessories with that anyway  :)

For the gloves, maybe you could get the rounded studs (like this: http://studsandspikes.com/buy/studs-dome-studs-c-57_24.html?osCsid=e44a8182a7da200569cac1d7d3728c4d ) in various sizes and punch them into the gloves.

Hey everyone. I was hoping some of you guys could help me.

I went to look for an L cosplay, but none of the sizes were what I wanted. I wanted long sleeves, but I wanted it to be relatively fitted for the torso, because in a cosplay as simple as this (well, any cosplay, really) the details were really important to me. I ended up buying a large shirt for the sleeves, though.

So I was wondering: Is it practical for me to "re-tailor" (I'm not sure about the right terms for this) the shirt, and if so, how would I do it?

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are trying to tighten the sides of the shirt inwards?  You should have someone standing by as you put on the shirt, perhaps, and then tighten the shirt in the areas you want tighter (what I mean is pinch the sides to pull the material tighter across your torso).  Try the keep the line where the seams would be along the sides of your body straight down from armpit to waist (don't just pull the material together, you'll probably be pulling more material from the back).  Safety pin or straight pin the sides, or mark with a marking pencil.  Carefully pull off the shirt.  Sew a new seam on each side following the markings from the pencil.  You may wish to turn the shirt inside-out before trying it on the first time so your markings are on the inside.

Does this make sense?  Sorry, it's hard to explain and I hope I understood what you are trying to do.

Hello! Does anyone know anything about dyeing fabrics or sewing on ribbon as trim? One of my costumes is dark grey, but I couldn't really find fabric dark enough. I know black dye is actually more of a brownish color but if I dillute it do you think I'd get the shade I'm looking for? Also this costume has a sleeveless robe over a longsleeved dress, would it look alright or clash if I used velvet ribbon on the dress but satin on the robe? And one of my friends has had trouble with her satin ribbon kind of puckering, how can I avoid this?

I think the costume I'm trying to make is probably out of my league judging by how many questions I have, but I wanna try anyways!

Try a test swatch of your material (a big swatch, maybe a foot square) and dye it.  The color you end up with may depend on the material (is it cotton?  a cotton-poly mix? wool? denim?)  Some materials don't take dye well.

Where did you look for material?  Jo-Ann?  You might see if there are other fabric stores in your area.  If you are close to Berkeley, there's a huge fabric discount store at Ashby and San Pablo that has a large variety of fabrics, quite a few suit-type materials also, which might give you the darker grey color that you want.

Britex in San Francisco also has a large collection of material but it is VERY pricey!  Same with Stone Mountain's Daughter in Berkeley, lovely material but can be a bit expensive.

Hancock Fabrics has a nice selection and it's a chain, like Jo-Ann's.

If you are near San Jose, I think there are a few vendors that sell material, but I'm not sure if they'll have the dark grey you want.

As to adding the velvet ribbon and satin ribbons, if the color and sheen are similar enough, it might not make a difference which you use.  Also, where will the ribbons be placed on each outfit?  If not in an obvious area (and I mean like right up front where it's spotted right away rather than as a trim on the armhole, or sides, etc.) then it might still be okay.  I have added trim, bias tape not ribbon, to an outfit by sewing it on and using fabric glue.  Using the glue (I think it's called fabri-tac - you can find it in Wal-Mart, Jo-Ann's or Michael's, etc.) was quick and easy although I haven't tried washing the outfit yet.  It's supposed to be fairly sturdy after it's dried.

Sewing the trim on, I started by pinning the trim where I wanted it, then sewed up one edge.  Then I unpinned and sewed down the other edge, trying to smooth it out where possible.

Do you have a picture or sketch of the outfit?  That might help others give you better suggestions.

Oh sure! http://images.orfay.com/i/photos2/2008/01/02/13/0/4/2/0427ebe2695f7968cdc14cb071d423e50_large.jpg (http://images.orfay.com/i/photos2/2008/01/02/13/0/4/2/0427ebe2695f7968cdc14cb071d423e50_large.jpg) The fabric I bought is cotton, possibly broadcloth, and is a little lighter than the bulk of the dress. I was thinking of making it darker and then dip-dyeing the bottom and ends of the sleeves so they're about black. As for the swirlies I saw a technique in an embroidery book called corded Soutache...

...

Y'know, the more I think about this the less I think I'll be able to achieve it at the quality I want, especially with my n00bie sewing skills. I think I'll pour most of my efforts into a Radtastic Sumomo and then work on this slow and steady throughout the year. Then I can enter Sumomo this year and my undead next year! Muahaha!

That is a very nice outfit, good luck with it!  As for the swirlie parts, have you considered cutting out a strip of gray material and then cutting out parts to look like the swirls?  Like doing applique?  Then you could sew or glue the applique to the sleeve and bottom of the jacket/cloak.  You could hand-edge the applique to make sure the edges don't fray or apply something to the edges?

I can't see it too clearly so I'm not sure of the detail there.

Again, good luck!  Please post a pic of it or let us know where you'll be wearing it when it's ready!

How well do silver sharpies work if you're dying a wig?  I mean, I've heard of all sorts of sharpie-dying, but I feel like it might be different if you're doing it with a metallic color.
Title: Re: Cosplay Sewing and Construction Support Thread
Post by: Fructose on January 05, 2008, 02:22:53 PM
I've heard that they technically work, but the silver filament ends up flaking off and you end up with just a light gray wig in the end, no metallic shine, which may still work for your purposes. It occurs to me, if you wanted it to actually have the silver shine to it, you could try sharpie-ing it and then sealing it with hairspray, but you'd have to be careful about it so you don't end up with stiff hair. (Assuming it has any length to it. If it's a short/specifically styled wig, having a wig that could stand up to a hurricane without a stray strand my be right up your alley.)

The good thing is that even if you end up doing it and disliking it, sharpie dying comes off if you give the wig an alcohol bath.

Okay, so I have a question; I'm trying to cosplay as Evil Rao, from Okami...the question is, how does one get a kimono to show that much, er, assets, and not actually flash the whole convention?

Okay, so I have a question; I'm trying to cosplay as Evil Rao, from Okami...the question is, how does one get a kimono to show that much, er, assets, and not actually flash the whole convention?

Here's a few suggestions:

Try buying a low cut strapless bra (or a regular bra with clear straps) that's got a cup size one below the size you normally wear. This will give you support and also an extra amount of cleavage.

Buy stick on bra cups. They'll give you coverage, but not much support.

Buy fashion or sports tape (double sided) and use it to stick the edges of the kimono to your skin so that it won't move out of place.

You can also change the costume slightly so that you are more covered up. I couldn't find a picture of the actual character you're cosplaying, but a lot of the time large breasted female characters have breasts that defy gravity and somehow manage to stay hidden behind fabric. The way the costume looks might not be possible in real life without you flashing someone.  ;)

Hope this helps!

I cosplayed last year for fanime for my first time. This year, I want to try and be more realistic, so I tried to find a semi-basic costume that I actually planned to do last year, but put on hold for this year. I wanted to do Yuffie Kisaragi from Dirge of Cerberus. I have everything nailed down pretty good... except for the boots. I looked at other cosplayers and didn't really like what they did... what's most confusing is these rectangular segments on the boots... I can't tell if they are embedded or sticking out of the boots. My reference is straight from the game... a video on youtube.

Hi. I know this is sort of stupid of me, but I'd really like a second opinion. I am planning on making this costume, Pharos from Persona 3:

http://www.dokuganryu.com/scans/megaten/p3/art35.jpg (http://www.dokuganryu.com/scans/megaten/p3/art35.jpg) (the boy on top, not the strange, large man ^^)

The only fabric that I could find was this:

http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=30b4eed4-2a53-4767-bd47-c4b8a99d52f2 (http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=30b4eed4-2a53-4767-bd47-c4b8a99d52f2)

So, does this material look right? Has anyone seen anything that might look better?

Also, he has a little beauty mark and I was wondering if there is a more proffesional and effective way of making one besides just putting on a dot of eyeliner.

Thanks so much in advance!

I'm not 100% sure this is the best place for this post.  However, the people who respond here tend to give informed opinions and care about cosplay accuracy so I'd value your opinions.

I am cosplaying as Tsunade from Naruto this year.  One thing that I'm hung up on is her forehead.  I had always assumed that the symbol on her forehead was a bindi.  A bindi's supposed to represent enlightenment and such so that always made sense to me.  However, on closer examination it looks like it's actually part of her skin.  Would I be completely out of my mind if I used a bindi anyway?  Or would I do better to draw this symbol onto my skin with an eyebrow pencil or something?

Suggestions are always welcome.  Thank you in advance for sharing any opinions or advice.

I think a bindi or even a regular sticker would be fine. I'm sure that a pencil would work too, but it will probably get smudged. As long as the bindi or sticker has glue that won't unstick if it's hot or sweaty, you'll be fine. You might want to find a few and test them out.

Facepaint. Not too oily. Going to your local costume shop and looking for paints there is a good idea... forgot the brand of the stuff though. House of Humor has it if you're local.

Well if you don't know how to carve, maybe perhaps through paper?

try reading this tutorial,
http://antheahui.deviantart.com/art/Yuffie-s-Shuriken-guide-70308253

If you don't like that method, why do you browse thru DeviantART under that same category to see stuffs that might give you and idea on how to construct your weapon.

by the way, if you're proficient in using wire-structuring, you might want to research more on paper mache on how those two methods might work for you...make a structure, sculpt it using paper, paint over it, and maybe it will look like that sword of yours.

You could try using foam board, a dowel rod for the tang (going almost all the way through the blade), epoxy glue, and good paint. That's what a friend of mine did with his Link sword. ^-^

Wow, if you're a first time cosplayer I would just have you buy the outfit than sew it, but then again, I don't know how well you know how to sew...

Well, you could get a design for a double-breasted jacket and just uberly modify it and add things afterwards... and just have the skirt thingy as a second piece that can be attached to the jacket. >.> Sorry if I totally didn't help. >.>;;
Title: Re: Cosplay Sewing and Construction Support Thread

For the skirt, you can buy a pleated skirt pattern and only make it go partway around, and then jsut sew in a panel of stright fabric for that front part.

For the jacket... you will probably have to combine two patterns- one for the sleeves, and one for the body, then adding on. I'm sure that you can find a pattern for that type of closure in the front, and a good place to look might be in the costume sections, since it seems like a lot of nurse costume would have that type of front. (Then again, I've never looked for a nurse costume pattern to know for sure.) Also look at military-style jackets, since the sleeves seem to be derived from that (and you might get lucky and find one with a front like that, as well!).

Paint a yardstick and trim the end off. Make sure you don't get a bevelled yardstick or people can see the tick marks lol.

I need to sew on a war kilt type of thing to a body suit by hand. I am doing this with scraps of left over fabric...when I sew it on...do I do it at an angle and over lap it for a pleat like effect?

Kilts are generally flat in the front and then pleated all the way around.  You might be better off making the kilt/skirt separately and then sewing the finished product to your body suit.

burlington coat factory, ross, marshal's, to start with.  or a thrift store, like out of the closet or goodwill?  if the trench coat is not cotton, but you're afraid it's too heavy, just rip out the lining.

If not a yardstick, maybe check home depot or orchard supply or a hobby shop, they sell dowels and yard-long pieces of balsa (but that might be too weak).

Cheating?  I don't think you'd be able to win in the Masquarade with a mostly purchased cosplay, or at least the construction part of the contest, but there are people who purchase whole outfits already made (myself included).  It's acceptable to buy a piece of clothing and then modify it.  I've done that, too, bought a lab coat and then cut the sleeves off, and slit the sides to make an FMA outfit for a friend.  So go for it!

Only a suggestion: I can only think of HotTopic or Spencer's?  Or can you get the belt buckle from a fabric store and fashion a mini belt?  I think some buckles are that small, or a wristwatch buckle from an old wristwatch?

another suggestion:  The skirt looks like a petticoat, somewhat, with a slightly fitted skirt pattern from the waist to the hip, and then 3 layers of ruffles attached.  Have you checked Jo-Ann's or another fabric store, look in the costumes sections of the pattern books.  Try googling petticoat patterns and see if you come up with anything more useful?  Not necessarily victorian, but maybe like the country swing dancing petticoats.

If you can get the smoother skirt part, then practice sewing a ruffle and attaching it.  The ruffle might be able to be cut from a straight strip of material, I don't know if you have to cut in a slight curve, or circular motion, although I have done the ruffled collar for a top by cutting a curved piece, then sewing one side of iit in a straight line.

I'm currently in the process of making Shalua Rui's arm (from Dirge of Cerberus) and have all the materials that I need to make it... but am having severe difficulty in finding a tutorial as to how to make a metal arm. I've found several for Edward Elric's arm, but it's completely different and hasn't been much help at all. <.<;;

Any ideas?

I know someone commented on wigs before, but I can't find the information.

I need help with my wigs.  I wore one last year and it hurt so bad I had to take it off after less then half an hour, and I still bruised from it.  I used a wig cap and bobby pins.  The wig is long (about the my rear end) but not that awful heavy.  What did I do wrong?  How can I avoid this same mistake this year?

I have 3 different wigs I need to wear.  The same long one from last year, a short one, and a mid length one.  I have to wear the mid lenght one (Lady Tsunade from Naruto) for about 4 hours one day.  HELP!  I am hopeless.  Advice is always greatly appreciated.

Also, completely off topic.  Is there anyone who is good at painting fingernails?  Tsunade has red finger nails, but red fingernails are completely out of character for Sophie (Howl's Moving Castle) and Nuriko (Fushigi Yugi).  I'll bring the nail polish and will pay a fair price if anyone is willing to help me paint my nails Saturday night...I'm just no good at it.  PM me if you're willing to help!

well i have a big problem. My boyfriend loves to dress up as odd things for fanime. one year i went as Menchi and he was my grill. Well this year I am taking him to the yaoi room and so he wants to dress as a large ear of corn. no you did not read that wrong I did type a large ear of corn. those who are a fan of yaoi will understand the joke. those who are not will more than likely laugh anyway. well no work has been done on this at all mostly because I am at a loss of how to even start making something like this. any thing that can help in the crative process of this would be wonderful. thanks!

This is just a suggestion and maybe will give you an idea or inspire you:

You might try finding large sheets of foam, like the foam liners for mattresses.  Check for foam suppliers in your area.  If you're near Albany, CA, there's a shop on Solano Ave.  You'll probably need at least as tall as he is, plus one or two feet extra, for the point.

Cut out the shapes, I guess maybe either 2 flat pieces to be the front and back, and then paint or draw the kernel outlines on the foam?  (I think I've seen foam in that yellowish color.)  Sew or staple the pieces together up to the top and cut out a circle for the face.

Green felt is available by the yard at Jo-Ann's Fabrics and other fabric shops.  Buy enough to make the husk.  Glue the husk to the corn.  That is, if you are using husk.

Or buy yellow felt for the corn portion, also.  Or buy yellow pre-quilted fabric (in the children's yardage section?).

For the corn part if you wanted some texture you could spray paint large bubblewrap yellow.

I need some Wig help.
Anyone have suggestions for how to make a little piece on a wig stick up?  you know how some characters have a little piece of hair that sticks up?  Well thats what I want to to.  So if anyone has advice I'd be greatful.

I saw something in CosMode where someone used silicon caulk on a strip of wig hair (I think it was synthetic), smoothed it in and then clipped it on a huge curler to get a curl.  I haven't tried it myself and I don't know if you could smooth the caulk in, and then clip the bit of hair to something straight or flat and let it dry a couple of hours. Probably depends on how long the bit of hair is that you want to stick up, and how big a clump (finger width?  palm width?).  Can you tell us which character this is for, so maybe someone else would have a better suggestion?

I also did a cosplay of a character from Saiyuki who has five long stands of hair coming from the top of his head right at the edge of the forehead. The rest of his hair is pulled back smoothly in a bun.  Rather then get a wig, I got complicated about it and ironed black fusible interfacing to thin wire.  I trimmed the interfacing to a thin strip about a 1/4 inch wide.  I then attached the wires to a wig clip (this is a tiny clip like a hair clip that you can sew to the inside of a wig to help keep it steady on your hair) and then placed the clip right at the foreline of my hair.  I curved the wire so it looked like the three strands of hair curving up and out from my head.  Sorry this image isn't very clear.

not that helps a lot, I'll have to try it.  I guess I'm worried about ruining the wig, because it is very very nice.
The person I'm cosplaying as is Shana from Shakugan no Shana.  As you can see it's just a little part of the hair that sticks up.  This isnt really even a big thing as I'm sure fans will know I'm suppose to be Shana, but I wanted to try it.

Lots of hairspray and a blow dryer.   Take the little bit you want, spray it so it's almost saturated, and hold it in place and use the blowdryer on it until it's totally dry.

If you're not happy with it, it washes out and you can try again.

Be careful with the blowdryer, though. Use it on cool or only very gently/quickly, since if you stick it there for a minute on high heat, you're going to heat-damage the fiber, which makes it all kinky and gross looking.

Anyone have tips for working with Model Magic? I bought tons of the stuff and tried to use it for Sumomo's hat but it was so spongey that when I tried to mold it over a bowl it got tons of micro-tears all over the surface. Also when I tried to draw lines in it they just sort of got re-absorbed.

WOO that is soo funny! I have seen people do grapes out of balloons, so If you wanted to go that route you can get a bunch of yellow balloons and tape or saftey pin the mouth piece to a corn-type shaped body piece. If you REALLY want to make a costume, i'd make a slight cone shape with foam , top it off and cut a head and arms hole(s). Then I'd stuff yellow spandex or tights and cluster the heck out of the foam. for fun- a pat of butter would be hilarious!

I have a few questions...

1) Where can I buy sheets of neoprene and vinyl?
2) Where is a good fabric store where I can buy bright yellow felt? (I've tried Michaels and Walmart but no dice)
3) If I were to go to Kinkos with a .jpg... Is there a way I can buy some iron on paper and switch the paper in the printer to the iron on paper? Would that work and if so, would I need to horizontally flip the images (mirror so they iron on correctly)?

BTW I live in San Jose and am rushing last minute for costumes.

Anything stronger than Elmer's will probably work fine. Tacky glue is a pretty good all-purpose craft glue. You could also try epoxy but that's designed for plastics, woods, metals and fiberglass, not sure what it would do to leather.

Try Fabri-Tac (from Jo-Anns Fabric stores or a craft store like Michael's).  A hardware store might also carry it, like the ACE stores.  The label says it work sofr fabric and leather.  I've tried it on fabric but it hardens a bit stiff.  Try it on a sample first.

Simplicity has some good ones.  You can find a catalog at any fabric store.  JoAnn's usually has them on sale every few weeks so you could get the pattern pretty cheap.

Personally, no matter what the outfit, I usually try to make it out of some kind of cotton/linen material because it breathes easier.  Most of the cons I go to are in warmer weather.  I like to be comfortable.  But depending on whether its supposed to be slightly stiff or flowing you could try making it out of vinyl, pleather,  a knit or polyester.  Whatever you can work with.  When you go into the fabric store, feel the material and drape it over your arm.  Ask the clerks how easy it is to sew and work with.  Knits and polyesters, though warmer, won't wrinkle as much.  You could also see if you can find a white stretch denim.

Without knowing what the back looks like, you might try a regular beret pattern and then get a shirt collar or sleeve-cuff pattern for that pinkish piece.

I need help MAKING HER HAT!!!

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthumbnail.image.rakuten.co.jp%2F%400_mall%2Fbook%2Fcabinet%2F0444%2F04449511.jpg&hash=12bc10ec2dfb6dfcef61cf5b4313b63249ad3f5e)

I'm looking at many patterns but i cant find anything like her hat.

HAT!!!

if anyone knows how to do it, or find a pattern, please notify me!

Thanx

Without knowing what the back looks like, you might try a regular beret pattern and then get a shirt collar or sleeve-cuff pattern for that pinkish piece.

oo, thanx for the advice!! i will totally try
I was going to suggest a collar like what is one a Sailor School girl uniform but those above could work.
Probably a mid to heavy white cotton would be best. You'd want one of the types of fabric that stiffen well.
And starch the hell out of the collar/sleeve thing that makes up that hat edge, so it can hold its form and stay up the way you want. You could also thread the tips of it and mid-back into the main hat, where the thread wouldn't be seen, for extra support. I would recommend both.

It looks like it'd be rather cool. I hope I see it at con. X3

Anyone know which sewing pattern is good for Nemu Kurotsuchi from Bleach?
She wears a kimono type thing, or does she wear a skirt too? Or is it just a really long kimono? Help would be appreciated.

Is that a full, uh, floor length cape?  That looks like a pattern I've seen in Jo-ann's fabric store, for a vampire cape or a mr. hyde cape, but you could try a cape pattern with a large collar and double the cape part but shorter for the shoulders, if you can't find a double cape pattern.  Some pattern packages actually carry patterns for different versions of the same cape:  short, long, hooded, collar only, no collar, shoulder cape.

The collar would need some stiff interfacing to stand up like that or heavily starched.

Try the fabric stores now since costume patterns would be on sale for Halloween.

I don't think I've ever seen a white cape in the costume or Halloween Spirit shops.

This is gonna sound wierd bt you can do aluminum and card board, and you'd need spray paint, aluminum is easily bendable and the card board is great but light support.
the only difficulty is having to Iron out the aluminum so that it stay flat and doesn't get wrinkly and you'd have to do more then one layer plus for the raised parts you'd have to add more card board or something else underneath it

Kimono are already long, traditionally knee-length. I think what you're thinking of is a gi, which is often found in karate/other martial art uniforms.
From what I've seen, Nemu wears a super-shortened kimono that ends in a tight fit. Maybe you could take an existing kimono pattern and alter the bottom to fit more tightly - it's still a kimono, though, so you could secure it closed with snaps, buttons, or even loosely stitch it down. If you wanted to cheat, you could make the top separate from the bottom and hide the ends with the obi. That way the skirt could be fitted more easily.
Please please please remember though, the white is another layer under the black, and the two layers are folded separately.

Does anyone here know how to make the kimono the Shinigami in Bleach wear? This is going to be my first time sowing with fabric and the like, so I thought I'd stop here for some tips before I began. For the white under piece, or whatever you call it, I was thinking of making just a shirt with long sleeves. Does this sound like a good idea, or should I just go the cheap way most dealers do and sow it on to the inside of the black kimono itself? Also, how do you make the kimono, anyhow?

Sorry for the load of questions, it's just that the ones I have found online look flimsy, and not well made. (And not in my size! :D! I'm guessing that by now you can tell I'm a kid, right?)

Hey all,

I'm really trying to make it a point to cosplay this year. I have it narrowed down to just three possibilities. I'm thinking either The Pyro from Team Fortress 2, Soundwave from Transformers, or Gundam Deathscythe from Gundam Wing. Problem is I have never cosplayed before. I took a look at some of the sites listed already. Just wondering if there was any other resources I could check out or any advice you guys have?

Thanks.

Would this be the right place to ask about costumes?

I kind of have a rather touchy/iffy question regarding the legality of a possible crossplay attire. I just wanted some clarification on it since I wouldn't want to break any rules or get in trouble or get thrown out of the con.

Ask away!  It is a family friendly con, so some caution should be exercised in your crossplay.  I've seen some very good crossplay, by the way, and nothing too extreme.  And I have seen some extreme cosplay which should be covered up!   ;D

Well as a heads up, I am going to attempt to pass (so that means possible shaving of unwanted body hair).

To also aid myself, I will also have the proper gear to help (gaffs, padding, etc) in terms of body appearance.

As for items, I would have tights on (used to better hide the padding and gaffs from showing).

Its just probably one article of the costume in question that I would have worries about. The item in question would be a leotard with a questionable cut in the back (I don't think it would need explaining, but ask in case you need one).

Now I will also be wearing a cloak as part of the attire, but the main issue would be with the leotard.

I know the explanation was a bit all over the place and maybe a bit confusing, but I'm trying to come up with the best way to explain it without seeming all weird and everything.

Well, rules will be posted at some time soon re cosplay (weapons, etc) and I'm sure will mention, um, possible risque outfits  :D.

You might want to email the staff with a picture of what you are trying to attempt (if it's an anime character) (not sure of the exact email / staff, can't find it in the Cosplay threads but I'm sure one of the mods or someone will post it).

But if you're wearing a cloak, won't that cover your back?

Well it's a bit of a made up/original character, but I do have two preliminary sketches that the person that is making three of my items (cloak/choker/scythe prop) drew up.

As for the cloak, that was kind of the point as a precaution of some sort, but it could go well with the costume.

I could also come up with what the actual items appear like (leotard and tights were bought at American Apparel for example).

I just somewhat on pins and needles in wanting the costume to get the ok/not marked as illegal. I mean to go through all the work and prep time to do a crossplay (my first actual attempt at trying to pass, so ya I'll shave), to only get told that what I have is illegal, I'm going to feel kind of embarrassed and disappointed.

Any other questions you have, you can respond or PM me or send me an email.

Do you wish to sew an actual kimono then? From scratch?

If you do, "Simplicity" has a very good pattern under "Costumes for adults." Pattern 4080. There's very long-sleeved, and short-sleeved as well. And if you know anyone who knows their way around a pattern, you should do just fine.

I only aquired this pattern recently however, and actually modelled my Shinigami outfit off a bathrobe pattern. XDDDDD
Although, I did make two. A complete white one, and a complete black one, and then sewed the two together. Which was a little dumb in retrospect cause I should have just used the white as a lining, but there you have it. I'm learning with each new outit I make. >.<

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. ^__^

So does anyone know of a tutorial, or can tell me how? Or am I just insane for even wanting to try? ^^;

Any or all. You could use cardboard/foamcore as a base and do paper mache over it to get rid of the rough edges.

Any of the above, but foam can be hard to make look "clean" (foam-core maybe).

I have a question about the pink/blue insulation foam that everyone is so fond of using for oversized swords.

I know precisely WHAT I want, and that would be the Styrofoam brand extruded polystyrene foam (the dense blue stuff), but I can't for the life of me find a local place to buy it.  I know I can order it online, but shipping for a large plank of foam is ridiculous, and I'd rather not pay more for shipping than the actual product.

Luckily, I live in San Jose, so I was hoping some of you local Fanime-goers might know of a foam supplier in the city (or near).  Any help would be much appreciated.

PS: I checked Home Depot (the obvious first place to look) and all they had was expanded polystyrene bead board (the stuff with all those annoying super-clingy foam balls).

i'd sugest using a good pvc pipe for the handle and thin plywood or pine for the blade, notch the pipe with a bandsaw or hacksaw to fit the blade in it.

While the audience is directed towards Los Angeles locale, there are quite a few places in San Francisco that sell great amounts of fabric. Fabric Outlet in the Mission District is one I highly recommend.

Thought it could be of use for this thread. ^^

Thus far my ideas are:

Myself as candle with my hair the flame
Using a brown tablecloth for the main material
Red bouncy balls (not dodgeballs) for the decorations
Padded donuts of material for the white frosting
Suspenders to keep the cake on me
Hulahoop at the bottom of the cake to keep it's shape

If ANYONE has any good or better ideas than I have please let me know! This is the only costume I actually have to make this year and I'm having some very bad medical problems throughout my family so I need to start ASAP!

Thanks, Avairrianna!

Does anyone have info on making custom gloves or know somebody who accepts commissions for gloves?  I'm looking for gloves for Chrono Harlaown from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.

Chrono Gloves (http://www.geocities.com/raym61/chronogloves.jpg)

For those gloves the simplest thing to do (and cheapest) would be to get some gray colored prom gloves and just use pens to put the lines and blue dots on. My friend did that with her Ed Elric arm and it is AMAZING! Constant compliments!

I'm helping one of my friend to make angel wings.
she is going to be yue.  Yue have really huge wings.  And we don't know what to use as the structure of the wing.  We tried wire from cloth hanger, but it does not hold.  We couldn't find any light but strong wires.  Help?

I agree with Avairrianna on buying grey gloves, use the pens for the lines where you can. But I would also buy grey cloth to match, and make a small rectangle out of it to sew onto the back of the glove. (cut two rectangles out, sew all around, leaving a gap to turn inside out, handstitch the opening closed, iron to flatten.  Glue or sew to the back of the glove.  Or use something like a riveter to attach to the glove at the corners, as in the picture.  (if you're careful enough, punch small holes in the corners and holes in the glove to line up, then use some brass fasteners (like for paper holes) to attach, that might look like rivets.)

Ok, so... I want to cosplay the Cake from Portal

Thanks, Avairrianna!

Something like two hula hoops (or large wire circles) with the top hoop spoked like a bike wheel?  So the brown material hangs flatter on the top part?  For the 'chocolate shavings', does this sound like it would work:  get some darker brown material, cut ovals out of it, spray with starch, then iron over a curved surface?  I can't think of any material except wire mesh that would retain a curve and still be fairly light so you could put a lot on the cake, but maybe this will help give someone a better idea.  I dunno if you'd want to try brown craft paper, wrap it around a large tube (like an oatmeal container) til it curls.

If you could attach brown craft foam to the bottom for the plate?

I know the shavings are hard...and I need them to be a material that wont get ruined by brushing up against people and stuff. And I don't think I'm going to do the plate at all just the cake.

I now have my white shirt for my candle and I know I'm going to use red dog balls for the red candies so I'm a step closer...

Thanks for your ideas BunofGovt!

Avairrianna and BunofGovt, thanks for the info.  I have a pair of motorcycle gloves I wore at Fanime'08.  Glove pic here (http://www.innovateinfinitely.com/animepage/mycosplay/mycosplay/nanohacosplay.jpg).  I tried the grey cloth method and, to me, didn't feel like a "tough man's" glove.  My thinking now is if there is a way to make specialized gloves or are there crafts to modify the gloves?

Hay there ladies, gents and its.

I feel this is a "dumb" question, but I have a vampire knight cosplay and I wanted to know if dry cleaning would be better?
I used a gentle washing cycle last year, and some of the 'jewels' came off. It was on a cool water cycle. (I'll probably just sew them on to avoid that)

Also, I want to take off the epicaly massive flower buttons and put on smaller ones. I would like to know where to pick them up and also get more of the 'jewels'. I will have to use the wonderful internets, so links to online stores would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Can't help you with the washing question, but I bought rose buttons for my friend's outfit from Britex Fabrics in SF and Stone Mountain & Daughter Fabrics in Berkeley.  The buttons were available in at least two sizes:  I think dime sized and quarter sized.  They were a little pricey but were exactly what I wanted.

When you say 'jewels', are these glued on?  Or like the jewel-studs with the prongs that go through the fabric?  I tried to find those for more permanancy but couldn't find any shaped correctly (like a kite rather than a square).  I ended up cutting out the shapes from fabric and gluing them in place.  If you were willing to try that, you might use silver fabric, or even fabric paint.

Anyone know of a good place I could go to for wigs and contacts?  I'm actually planning on going to next year as M-Ryotaro from Kamen Rider Den-O.

I also want to try creating the actual DenGasher Sword Mode prop, as well.  Any tips?  Also, some references...

Define cheaper... They can be nice and simple but what if this is a piece you're going to wear often? Resin would hold up better in the long run. It's a great idea though for shorter wearing costumes though.

I made predator armor with nothing but pingles cans and craft foam. I make wrist guards, guantlets, shin guards, I even made a gun arm with pingles cans. These things are used in combination, so that they can last during long periods of wear. You can make any kind of armor with pringles cans. You can make props too.
Using those things in combination, rather then individualy, makes them more durable.

I can also build armor out of plastic buckets, soda/juice bottles, rubber maid mats, anything you can find at a dollar store, or stuff around the house.  I'll get a topic up in Incredible Things I can Make, so you can see examples.

That and resin is heavy. I have a resin helmet I wore for my predator cosplay last year. @_@ It wasn't that much, but it got heavy after a while.

When using darker materials I just use a white colored pencil. But lighter fabrics I use a pen that goes on purple then fades away.

I used to use blue wash-out pen on light fabric, but got sick and tired of having to launder finished garments.  Now it's a combination of chaco-liner markers (a little expensive without coupons, but so awesome) and normal supermarket chalk when I can find it.  I've had bad experiences with the fade-out pens not going away in the past, so I shun those except for silk.

Question: does anyone know of a sealer that won't turn Liquid Leaf yellow?  I've had it happen pretty blatantly on my silver stuff, and less obtrusively on the pewter, with a normal gloss spray sealer, brush-on gloss varnish for acrylics, and Modge Podge, and it's driving me batty.

I went to a place called Artel, art store in my area that has almost everything I need for my artsy projects :D  I got this spray that promised the world it wouldnt give you a yellow tint when it dried. I tried it out on a wooden stick I was painting to make a staff, and I applied a light layer and it kept its promise.  Only had a tiny tiny yellow glob on the end because I got too much on the end, but it worked just fine :)

The brand is Krylon: Crystal Clear, Acrylic Coating 1303A.  Works on wood, metal, plastic, papier mache, glass, plaster, ceamic, dried/silk flowers, paper wicker, painted surfaces, etc.  I got a 6 oz spray can....not sure if it comes in any other sizes.

I use several different types of marking materials for pattern making. It really boils down to the material in making the decision, but for the most part I use watercolor pencils in white, very light blue and black. For materials like jean, corduroy and heavy material like this I use papermate pen or # 2 pencil. For silk, rayon, crepe, etc it is a toss up between watercolor pencil & tracing paper.

The water color pencil reason is because I can dot or dash my pattern on the material. I dip it in water and continue working. I like it much better than the fabric markers I have bought and it washes out really well. Just make sure to use the right color for what you are working with.. white to light color materials = really light blue/white/ light yellow pencil; medium to dark colored materials = black or dark gray pencil. Not necessarily greatest for long lines in one stroke, but will do lines ( I do it for edges and curves of a pattern)

Pencil will fade with washings, so keep it light, and ball point pen can be removed by using hairspray. spray small area at a time (2-4" square) spray till wet and then blot with paper towel. Repeat as necessary. Launder as required when finished removing pen. I try to stay away from synthetics when using ballpoint pen because this type of removal can have some drastic effects on the material, but some of my greatest discoveries have been through mishaps ^^)

Hope this helps ^^)

I think that's the brand name -- they're neither pencil nor marker, but a plastic tube with powdered chalk inside and a rolling click-wheel mechanism.  (I'll try to remember to throw mine in my repair kit for AX, in case you want to peek at it.)

Everyone know how to keep a wig on. Well its a deidera wig. It keep falling backwards. Eventhough the headband is there. Its so annoying.

Hairpins.  Lots of hairpins.  Put your hair into braids, pin it up, put it into a wig cap, pin the wig cap into place, and then pin the wig into that.

This assumes that you've tightened the elastic inside the wig to the point that it's snug enough on your head first.  Most wigs with that sort of styling should probably stay on reasonably well on their own if the elastic is right -- at least, I don't think it's an insanely back-heavy wig.  But the layered braids-and-pinning has served me well, and has helped a wig stay on a friend with an incredibly stubborn head, so if all else fails I highly endorse that method.

I'm not sure about a Zack Fair wig but can you use the Punky wig from cosworx and style the hell out of it?

Oh, and to ruby19_4 re the deidara wig, when I wear my wigs (but my wigs are mostly lightweight), I sew toupee clips into them at the crown and sides or neck.  I french-braid my hair (below shoulder-length), clip it to the back of my head, put hair glue or gel in my hair at the front and sides, smooth it all back, let the gel stiffen a bit, then put on the wig, making sure the toupee clips grab firmly in place where the gelled/glued areas are.

Hey everyone. :) My inquiry is about bikini type tops. As we all know, anime characters are generous in the assets area and seem to have that perfect cleavage without the help of Victoria's Secret. Well, pfft, my A cups differ greatly. My boobies look passable for an anime girl in my Victoria's Secret push up bra though! I'm hoping to cosplay Yoko or Rikku, and both wear bikini tops. Is there any tutorial/strategy to inconspiciously pad a bikini to have a push up effect without underwire? (Underwire would make the tops too bra like for my liking.)

I don't know if there's a better solution out there yet.  Good Gravy I HOPE there is.  However, back in my day (the late '80's early '90's) the answer was duct tape.  You could do some googling and find the exact way to do it, and I'm sure that some of the more modern medical grade tapes would be better...but year it does do miracles for your cleavage.  Can make a middle school girl look like a porn star...I speak from experience.

Last year, I used my hair for my cosplay, and I wasn't too happy with the result. So, I decided to try a wig for my Yachiru cosplay! It's styled, with tiny touch ups by me here and there, though they aren't even noticeable. Now, my mom said she'd help me put it on, and flipped it inside out. I kind of freaked out a bit, and told her to put it back on the head. So, does anyone know any ways to put on a wig without utterly destroying the styling? Because I'm not looking forward to having to re-style it every time I put it back on, plus having to instruct my mom on how to fix the back. I've heard some people use such things as hairspray and hairglue, but would that work for all those annoying details that she has? Also, is there a specific brush type that you have to use in order to make it neater, and also not ruin the styling?

Sorry to be a bother! I promise I did my research before posting here, but nothing seemed to answer my question. I know I'm probably worrying too much on account of most things, but I'm new at this, so bear with me please!

For wigs, either a wider-toothed comb or a brush without balls on the bristle ends is generally the way to go -- you just don't want anything that'll snag the fibres.  You can do an amazing amount of styling with hairspray (Got2B Freeze is one of the best options), and careful application of a hair dryer (keep it at a distance and on low, at least until you figure out how much heat the fibre can take) to heat-train the fibres to go the way you want.

If you've got the wig styled and the style 'set' with hairspray or whatever else you choose, then putting it on shouldn't affect the styling overmuch.  You'll want to put a wig cap on under, but once you've got that, set the front hairline where you want it and pull the back down over your hair (the wide portion at the centre back is usually a good place to grip).  You can work from underneath/inside for the most part, and that avoids fussing the styling too badly -- and unless you're like me and have a ton of hair to keep in place under there, you don't have to manhandle the wig too too much after it's in place.

Not sure if any of that made sense.  XD  There are some excellent tutorials out there for wig-styling basics (and even putting wigs on), and hopefully someone can link you to them; I'm not at my personal computer so I don't have any handy.

Thanks so much, Charis! Don't worry, it made tons of sense. x3

Got2B Freeze? Would I have to order this off the internet, or would it be available in my local wig store? And I think I'll pass on the hair dryer, I think I'd fry it.

So, as for putting it on. By working underneath/inside, does that mean I can take it from underneath and put it on my head? Because frankly, that sounds so much easier, and as you mentioned, won't affect the styling too much. So if that's the case, I suppose I'm pretty much set for putting it on until I got the spray and whatever other crazy things people use. As for taking it off...well, I think I'll be able to figure that out by myself. ....Maybe. xD

Anyhow, tutorials sound interesting, though I've looked at a couple and they weren't all that great, though maybe I wasn't searching the right thing? That was probably it.

You can get it at your local drugstore.  XD  I got mine at KMart, I think, and on sale.
If it's a decent-quality wig, a hair dryer on low won't fry it, especially if you keep moving it -- but the caution makes perfect sense.

Mostly, yes.  If you've ever put a swim cap on, it's a lot like that (or at least, a lot like how I used to put mine on).  You take it off pretty similarly -- just start at the back and loosen it, and it'll slide right off your head.

Title: Re: Cosplay Sewing and Construction Support Thread

It should be do-able if you are handy with a needle and thread.  Have someone help you with this.  Gently turn the outfit inside out and then put it on.  Then have your helper assist with pinning or safety pinning the areas/sections of the sleeves that need to be slimmed down.  Make sure you are still able to move your arms.

As for the torso area, you can either pin inwards from the side seams or add darts to the front and/or back (take a look at a standard blouse or suit jacket:  on either side of the center seam, there is a section where the material is sewn up to create a curve, usually in the bust area leading to the waist.

Baste (sew with wide stitches) and remove the pins.  Do not cut any material yet and reverse back to outside out.  Try it on, even with the material bunched inside you may be able to see what a difference it makes.

Sorry if this sounds vague.  You might want to find a seamstress or a friend/relative that sews to see if he/she can help you with this.

If you make your own bikini top, it might be easier to pad more for fullness rather than padding a store bought top.  Try adjusting the pattern for the part covering the breast to make it a little wider rather than skimpy.

Does anyone know any good tutorial sites for sewing leather/ faux leather, or even polyester?
My Cosplay next year is in need for a few leather parts, but I've never worked with that sort of fabric before. OTL
I'm either going to make this look perfect, or not do it at all!
My dad is helping me with the metal/plastic parts, as he's a mechanic. (Lucky me, LOL)

Not so much site suggestions, but I can speak from experience sewing barstool-weight vinyl (eep!).

1. Get a rolling foot for your machine. They are usually not horribly expensive, and you will not have to suffer fabric sticking.
2. Leather needles, even if you sew fake stuff.  In some cases needles are needles, but I had better luck with not breaking leather needles.
3. Do flat-felled seams wherever you can. It's just sturdier and keeps the fabric from doing weird rolls. Think of the difference between an ironed seam and one that isn't ironed.  And ooh, here's a howto! http://sewing.about.com/od/techniques/ss/flatfelled.htm

I've never sewn gloves before, and I need to make a pair for my Ulala (Space Channel 5) cosplay... out of vinyl. Any suggestions or patterns? I'm at a bit of a loss. I haven't looked into buying a pair, but I doubt that elbow-length orange vinyl gloves would be easy to find (and if I could, they probably wouldn't match very well with the rest of my costume!).

You may want to check the cosplay.com site to see if anyone has advice about making Arlong's teeth.  (I'm surprised you did not ask for advice on making his nose and can hardly wait to see your outfit if you come to Fanime in 2010!)

If you intend to keep your mouth closed, maybe you can get those mouth guards for sports and draw or etch the lines of the teeth on them?  Or take the mouth guards (I'm not sure what they're made of, but I know of some that you put in hot water to soften, and then wear to mold to the shape of your teeth) and perhaps try cutting out the sharp teeth from the front section of each guard.  If you only cut out in the front area, maybe the side portions and back can be used to help hold the guard in place...

Or if you were fortunate enough to be at a Halloween/Spirit store during the sales and purchased several pairs of fangs, you might have been able to use those (10 pairs?) on each tooth?

I think I saw someone last year give the appearance of having fanged or sharp teeth by adding some black coloring some kind directly onto the sides of each tooth.

...An odd question.

Where could one find black men's trousers with a 24"-26" waist, for someone who is 5' 5"?

I have been looking through so many things, but thrift stores tend to only have giant pants unless you look in boys', but then they are too short.

If you've already checked department stores, you might have to check shops that rent bridal/formal wear.  Sometimes they have jackets and pants on sale from previous rentals.  It'll cost you more than thrift stores probably, but if that doesn't work, then I suggest sewing (or finding someone who can sew) a pair.

But I am not exactly sure how to alter patterns like this to something the character is wearing.
Especially this one, the back is full whereas the character one is something like a camisole.

Or any other pattern that is even closer?

The one suggestion I can offer you is to look at halter top patterns instead of vest patterns. The vest pattern you have chosen will put a seam over the breast area that doesn't appear on the image you submitted. I didn't see the back of the character so I couldn't determine if there was a center back seam or a pleat with straps, which most vest patterns will have.

By looking into spring and summer top patterns you will most likely get a more accurate pattern with less alterations, especially in the strap area. You will most likely need to add length and adjust your button holes to include more and holes on both sides so you can lace it up.

If determining length is an issue you don't like to tackle, try looking at summer dress patterns. A suggestion I would like to add is that if you combine patterns to help you try to use the same brand of pattern instead of two different ones until you get comfortable altering patterns.

Another suggestion is to make a basic mock pattern and scrap material large enough or an old sheet/tablecloth/etc. Lay out your pattern pieces on it as though it was your fabric and cut them out. Then using a 12 stitch or 4 width stitch on your machine sew the pieces together. Try it on and see where you need to alter it for your body. By doing this you can save having to buy more material if you mess up. ^^)

Hope this helps
