I forgot to add Polysics
They are so cool, I think it would totally fit for Fanime!

Polysics unofficially disbanded when Kayo left like 2 years ago. They haven't done anything since her departure and are considered on indefinite hiatus. So, yeah... kinda not likely.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Butler Cafe?

I read through that other thread.  I already understand what a host club proper is supposed to be like, and I'm not saying we make that.  I'm just suggesting that we entertain the idea of a butler cafe as it would be for Fanime.  As for the reasons, Kite, there may be some valid things, but if they amount to merely a little more work for staff for the trade off of more involvement and entertainment for the attendees, wouldn't it be worth the work?  As it's said, for fans by fans.  I take from that that the convention's primary purpose is to bring together people with a common purpose in, for lack of a better word, celebration for what they enjoy.  If one those things would be a butler cafe, again wouldn't it be good to consider it and, beyond that, check with the attendees that would be the ones that actual go to the event.

For things that may be complicating creating a butler cafe, though, wouldn't many of those things apply to the maid cafe as well?  Yet we have a maid cafe.  The sole difference being swapping genders of the actual servers.

Also, if I sound harsh to staff, my apologies, but I want an interesting idea to be considered beyond just being humored.
My issue with this is that, the idea gets brought up hundreds of times and people don't know exactly what or why they're asking for it. I don't expect people to understand the logistics, budgeting, and work that it takes to put into an event like this, but my question is... seriously before you consider suggesting something, think about how and why you want such a thing to exist.

Swapping genders of the servers is your basis of this, rather all you provide. It kind of loses the point of "theme" if that's all their is to it. It wouldn't be a "butler cafe" any more if their is no role play in it. It is "Guys dressed as butlers acting like hosts, without trying to seduce you or take your money". If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me but that's all you're giving me to work with.

If anyone wants to suggest a butler cafe, that's cool with me, but make it worth reading. I've read hundreds of "You should make a butler cafe" suggestions before for many different conventions, but not once do they provide an argument or reason behind it.

Why do you think a butler cafe should exist?(Besides because we want hot boys to serve us).
How do we do this making it gender neutral where it is appropriate for all ages/sex/sexual orientation.

I will answer the most common answer to these now.

"It's not just about hot boys, besides, isn't the maid cafe the same thing? Just females?"
If you read my prior thread no. Maid cafes are about the service more than it is having an attractive female. It's about having someone play the role of your maid to feel comfortable with, to talk and converse with, and to share without fear of being judged(as long as you don't do anything inappropriate of course).

"Isn't the Maid Cafe geared towards men? The Butler cafe is the equivalent geared towards women!"
Again, if you read my other post, this is not true. Maid Cafes are open and equal and are not meant to be sexual. It's why the uniforms are very conservative(yes uniforms have to be okay'd as not being too revealing or overly sexual because that's now what we want). You can ask the numerous female attendees that visited the cafe if it was geared towards the males. While males may make something more of it, it's very gender neutral in how they act. Regardless if you're male or female, it's about the service and comfort you get.

Butler cafes, by definition are geared to be sexual. The purpose to build sexual tension, and this is something that I personally believe should not be part of Fanime as it makes it much more less family fun. We had Plenty of kids (ages 2-14) visit the cafe this past year and the maids got to play games with them and just play with them. The role of a butler is lost in that, and would be off putting for children to visit.

So feel free to persuade the convention and other staff members, but as someone who is well versed in maid cafes, butler cafes, host clubs, hostess clubs etc... it'll be extremely extremely hard to persuade me to be open to the idea.

Not impossible though, since I was against the idea of a maid cafe happening because I felt that it would be done incorrectly. I was open to the idea based on who ran it and the legitimacy in how it was run. I was right in my doubt the first two years, but when it was ran by someone that knew what they were doing and what a maid cafe is supposed to be, it went well.

I've spoken my perspective on the matter a number of times and personally I would never want to do it. You may convince someone us and the con to think otherwise but my stance is the same. Butler cafes cater to an extremely small demographic, 95% of which are female, and it's a very sexually oriented idea.

Masamune Shirow. Always. With his new Appleseed XII anime he is still relevant.

This is impossible. THis isn't even a "long shot" it's an impossibility. He doesn't even do JP appearances, he doesn't like appearing in public and stated he won't do so multiple times through out his career.

The lack of close-by food - My mother insists on real food when we go to conventions, which meant that this time we were constantly spending way too much time trying to find food, time which could have been better spent actually seeing stuff at the con.  ^.^;;
I don't want to reply to this thread but this one bothers me. There's like 18 restaurants all withing 10 minutes of walking. Price ranging from 3$-150$. All kinds of food of all kinds of types. I am honestly baffled by this comment. I ate Pita Pit, Iguana's, Subway, Pizza My Heart all for under 6$ a meal and all of them were filling and good for me. I also went to a number of nice sit down restaurants for dinner. Do a little research, there are a lot of places to eat around the convention.

In case people don't realize I changed the front page... COPYPA~

So the 2nd (and last tryout unless something miraculous happens) are
going to be Saturday March 10th at the San Jose Convention at 10am. If
you don't know where this is, you better find out fast, because this
is where FanimeCon is being held. But just in case...

150 West San Carlos Street  San Jose, CA 95110
(408) 792-4194

Specifically the meeting will be in the Hilton 2nd floor lobby.
There's a sitting area right up the stairs, turn right, and it'll be
on your left side.

The first tryouts were awesome and incredibly successful. Had
approximately 30 girls show up. I hope that twice as many girls show
up for the second tryouts!

To copy and paste from last try-outs
What to expect:
The try-outs are roughly like a short course on what a maid cafe is,
what we do at Fanimaid Cafe, and basic training on tasks we expect our
maids to be able to fulfill. Please dress to impress to show off your
personal style, and as it will be at AOD, we are okay with you being
in cosplay during the try-outs if you don't want to change your
clothing. Prepare a pen and a notebook in case you would like to take
notes and answers to any questions you may have.

Please hold any questions regarding hours, uniforms, and what have you
for the try-out, as we usually go over everything you need to know.

Other things to keep in mind.
Please be prompt. This is incredibly super amazingly important.

The meeting/tryouts may last anywhere as long as 4 hours, maybe longer
according to how many girls show up. So once again, please be prompt
and hopefully manage so you'll be able to be there the entire time.

If you attended the first meeting, please do not attend the 2nd
tryout. This confuses me. When I try to organize you, and you apply
twice, I get confused and spend too much time trying to decide if
you're the same girl, or two girls with the same name that look
incredibly similar. I don't like this... I really don't like this. So
I usually stop doing work at that point for a while.

Hope the lot of you show up. This year is going to be an amazing year.
The returning maids are incredibly hype. Staff has been working hard
to get everything ready with lots of new ideas. And a big lot of
awesome girls trying out. This group and a lot of these girls have
become some of the most important people to me. And each year it grows
and only becomes more important. Have fun at the meeting and good
luck.

Sincerely,
Mikey Pham FanimaidCafe Co-Head

Small correction after math. You can qualify for a badge just working the cafe, but it's not exactly easy. You have to work from setup to clean up both days (with only breaks you can't take a lunch or anything like that) as well as do the after work(post clean up) Sunday night. It's doable but incredibly hard. You'll be putting in as much time as staff does basically on those two days.

Yay!! I really hope there is  :)

Btw, I read in somewhere that if we do get selected to be a maid then our badges get reimbursed...may you please clarify? Does that mean that we will get a "free" badge?
You don't get a free badge for being selected. To get reimbursed for a badge you have to sign up as a volunteer and complete I believe 20 hours over the course of the convention. Unless you work every single minute the cafe is open, you won't qualify. What you can do is volunteer at the cafe, and volunteer other departments over the course of the convention to qualify for a reimbursement.

I believe the next try out is march 10th in san jose but that's not an official statement. One will come soon.

Indeed it was nice to meet everyone >> and I'm sorry we were forced to bring you all back to my room. I hope you had fun at the meeting and tryouts though.

Now more work organizing and going through your interview sheets.

Prices were roughly as such.

Small deserts were roughly around 3.50. Larger deserts were around 4-5. Sandwiches were about 5.50. Drinks were 1.50 or so for coffee/tea 2.50 for sodas. 4$ for a can of monster.

So you're looking at avg fare for convention food.

As was previously noted, the cafe itself was on the concourse floor on the Hilton side way way way at the end of the concourse. Above the Starbucks on the first floor.
I was wondering, would the catering be able to do an afternoon tea set like at the tea shops? That would be so fun.

Claudia: I'm totally the wrong person to be asking that, hahahahaha. I think it's Facilities that would be the people to talk to?

Yeah I've been checking everyday for the past week. There was a 40% chance on the day I posted this but it went to 0 since then. It'll be chilly though so don't forget jackets.

TRYOUTS on FEB- 18th. As posted. Tryouts will be taking place on Feb 18th in Japantown.
Our first meeting will be on February 18th, 2012 at promptly 10:00am during AOD. It is very important that you show up on time, as we will not repeat any of the information that we offer during the try-out, and it is asked that you choose to go to only one try-out, as attending more than one will not aid in our decision for new recruits.

It will take place in the court-yard in front of Shabu-sen. Here is the address.

1726 Buchanan St
(between Post St & Sutter St)
San Francisco, CA 94115

As an addendum to this:

IF IT IS RAINING THIS DAY, WE WILL BE MOVING THE TRY OUT LOCATION.

Due to unknown weather conditions I wanted to put a precautionary. If weather seems to deem not happy and it is raining on this day, I won't subject you to sit outside in the rain. If it happens to be raining this day, we will meet up in the main mall area on the first floor. To specify, If you exit Ichiban Kan through the mall entrance, you'll be on the second floor. If you look down you'll see the bridge thing with stairs going to the second floor. Staff will be at the benches in that area.

::::REMINDER THIS IS ONLY IF IT IS RAINING. IF IT IS NOT RAINING, WE WILL STILL MEET OUTSIDE OF SHABUSEN:::::

I hope it doesn't rain.

Note: despite this is coming from me, who is the co-head of the cafe none of this is official reasoning as to why the cafe is not in a separate room. This is purely my opinion on what I think of the matter.

I've thought about this myself plenty of times and have never brought it up because in the end, I'm against it. Outside of getting a large panel room, the normal venue rooms are much to small. Just some fun numbers(not exact but a rough idea) at any point in time during the cafe, there are 50-60 patrons, with a full capability of seating over 100 if every party is completely full sized. There are about another 60-100 people in line at all times. A normal room cannot accommodate this nor handle the line. Also with the flow and pacing(as well as how much we need to run around the con to do errands, girls need an area to retouch their uniforms store items and other things) I very much enjoy the open space.

I've also thought about ease and capabilities of the convention centers catering service. With it on the concourse it is much more accessible to both attendees as well as convention center staff to get more food ready and be quick about it as to not delay operations.

If your issue is privacy and setting, trust me when I say that fades the instant you sit down. Although I do wish things could be done more environment like to add to it, I'm quite happy with the open venue and think it's for the better. I've ran ideas for hours about floor plans and decorations, space capabilities and think this is for the better. I'm not against moving to a room, but if we do we would need one that can properly accommodate the cafe correctly.

It's actually preferable if you do not attend multiple tryouts. When you attend multiple tryouts your name gets listed twice and we have to figuire out if it's two people with the same name or if it's the same person. So one tryout only please ^^.

As for getting lost, I understand this happens sometimes. Before tryouts I generally send out my cellphone number just in case. If you are coming and need some time just text me and I'll note it down and will give you a recap of what you may have missed after the meeting(note showing up late looks bad just like in any tryout or interview). But again, we understand these things may happen. Also keep in mind we are on a schedule, so I may not be able to recap for you if the meeting time goes too long/there are a lot of girls. So please try your very best to be on time.

The San jose tryout will be some time in march. The date of the 18th is the San Francisco tryouts only. So if you go to the sjcc no one will be there.

Vanillashakes: not that it's that different than your norm. Remove the sweater, tank top, and librarian status is go!

I'm pretty excited and nervous for try-outs ahhhhh > u<

No reason to be nervous. Just be yourself. None of us are exactly intimidating.

Some things to keep in mind. If you're not going to be cosplaying for aod, I suggest dressing your style. Not dressing up or going all out, but really show us who you are. Also speak well and coherently. Sentences are always better than one word answers and responses. We want to know more about you than an answer to some questions.

Best of luck, see you next month.

Oh okay! I'm really sorry for so many questions LOL. But these are my last ones. > o<
What time do the earliest shifts start? Because if I did it, I'd prefer to do the earliest one so I could still table with my friend in the afternoon. ; o;

And, for the tryouts, will they be like mid February or so? Because at the end of February, I have a full week retreat I'm going to. ; o;

There will be multiple tryouts, so don't worry about that. As for earliest shift, IF IF IF IF the schedule is the same as last year, Cafe opens at 11am which means shift would be 10:45 -> 2:15or something like that.

Edit: These aren't absolute or exact, but it's just to give you a rough idea.

another question from me! what about gatherings? i have a few (5-6)  that id really like to go to. is it a bad idea to do the cafe with this in mind? or is it possible to compromise?

I don't understand what you mean exactly by compromise. How it works is, generally there's 3 shifts morning, early afternoon, late afternoon to closing. In addition, it is mandatory for all maids to be working during fanimaid live(either as part of the live, or in the cafe during the live). Most of the time, the girls choose their shift and that's that. If you're asking if you can do a half shift or work separate hours through out the day inbetween things, chances are, probably not. Fluctuating schedules and giving girls special choices in when they work like that is unfair to the rest of the girls.

So if you are okay with picking your shifts, during times you aren't going to be at a gathering, that's fine, but if they do overlap with a gathering, unfortunately I can't allow you to disappear for an hour or so during your scheduled shift then return and work an hour later. So it's up to you. I can't really tell you if it's a good idea or not, because I don't know your schedule and how it'll work.

haha me too! im already 20 xD
glad to know that im not the only one ><

20... wwwwwwwwwww

You guys would be surprised how old some of the maids actually are(not that I would ever disclose that information). But you make it out to sound like we only want really young girls, like I'm some kind of dirty pedophile.

No discrimination from us, 16 is the age cap due to liability reasons. Age doesn't matter at all otherwise, what we care about are about personality. If you're mature enough to handle the work and be professional, that you'll put in the effort, and that you'll be social and carry the position with pride.

I guess I'll talk a little bit about the cafe as I've been helping run it for the past 4 years. Being in Fanimaid is something to be proud of. Besides the work at the actual cafe, the events, and serving. A lot of the girls make bonds with each other. I don't mean to over play it, but it can be life changing. Many of the maids grew significantly through the cafe and when I look back at when I first met them, to who they are now, it's quite amazing. I myself have made amazing friends through this. Tiffany for example is one of my best friends now. She went from being really shy and (sorry erouto) socially awkward and introverted, to being incredibly open. Not just me, but she's become close friends with a number of the other maids and staff.

Besides that, a number of connections and bridges were made. Branching out and meeting new people, making connections for work, promotion, and interests. While family may not be the exact word I'm looking for, we are definitely something close to that. There are plenty of perks to becoming a maid, even if they're not that obvious unless you're a part of it.

But don't get me wrong. Being a maid is a lot of work. It's tiring, you sacrifice time at the convention, you have to be incredibly diligent and observant. It's not something to take lightly nor assume will be nothing but fun. But I'm sure the large majority of the girls will tell you that it's definitely worth it.

But here's some fun incentive. A few of the maids got to present gifts to the Guest of Honors last year. They got to meet and talk to FLOW, Yuya, Momoi, and the other guests. Yokota san actually ended up hanging out with the maids for a little while and talked with a bunch of us when we were off duty (and kissed me lololololololol). We ask the girls for a lot. To work hard and be professional. But we definitely take care of them, because we care about the maids quite a bit. As I said, we're almost like a family. I should actually get some of the maids to post here and talk about their experiences as a maid and what it means to them.
