Exciting news FanimeCon Attendees!
In 2017, we are introducing 1 new element and making one of last year's Fan Event part of the Programming Schedule.

KPOP DANCE PARTY
Friday, Saturday, Sunday 3PM to 6 PM RM 230
Meet other attendees that share your passion for KPOP in a non-competitive atmosphere!
   Play the KPOP Chorus Game!
Bust your favorite KPOP dance moves to all the biggest KPOP Hits spun by DJ PeterLo of KPOPCAST (http://kpopcast.net)

B-Boy/Girl Hangout
Friday, Saturday, Sunday 1 PM to 3 PM RM 230
In 2017, a space will be provided for the dancers that have hungout in the lobby and hallways for years.
It is the hope that by providing this space for the dancers, it will alleviate the congestion in the main lobby and hallways.  Please help
make this successful. Add your request to this thread or bring your own beats on a usb stick or cd(The Dance's Sound system WILL be in use for this) and enjoy the opportunity to show
off your moves on a real dance floor.

While the normal Evening Dance rules will not be in effect for these 2 events, additional regulations and code of conduct might be posted later.

If you have questions/comments send to dance [at] fanime.com

This year the DJ application period will be open from NOW till December 31, 2016
Any applications received on or after January 1, 2017 will not be considered.

The application can be found here: https://goo.gl/forms/Ngw4qM9uIv4wWSTq2

The DJ selection process has changed for 2017. In recent years we had lots of performers
(44 in 2015 and 38 in 2016). In 2017 we will be selecting fewer DJs and possibly giving
more time to those selected. This application is intended to provide you an opportunity
to express your interest in performing at the FanimeCon 2017 Dance.

In 2016 we received the criticism that we had too much Big Room House, Trap, and
hardcore.  Unfortunately, our selection pool was limited.  In 2017, while we might pay
special attention to an application that is not one of these genres, we expect DJs to apply
with their best genre and one that they can give their best performance with regardless
of set length.  Please note that we have not yet decided which genres to focus on this year.
It was quite a surprise in 2016 to have one our trance DJs chased off the stage with the
crowd chanting for "HIP HOP".

Please remember that we expect all our DJs to actually beat match and mix, simply
crossfading songs will not score points with the selection team.

This application has been posted to give applicants time to prepare, express interest,
and the management team time to review interested candidates.

* Even though review criteria may change over the year, your application will be
reviewed on the requirements stated at the time of your application.

1. The DJ Selection process is open from NOW (Nov 2016) till December 31, 2016
2. DJs/Performers are not considered to be staff members.
2.2 DJs/Performers will have to obtain an official form of entry to the convention.
2.3 Selected DJs are not compensated and will not receive a badge or money.
2.4 Selected DJs will not receive any discounts on a FanimeCon Badge.
2.5 Selected DJs will not be able to book an "opener" and are expected to perform their entire slot by themselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FanimeCon is a growing annual anime convention held at the San Jose
Convention Center during Memorial Day Weekend.  Every year there are more DJs interested
in performing at the dance than spots available.  The DJ Selection process has been put in
place to create a fair system for offering performance time to members of FanimeCon while
balancing the genres attendees are interest in and maintaining a performance standard.

The 2017 Dance Management Team's mission is to successfully plan dance
events during FanimeCon which promote a fun, safe, and enjoyable experience
for attendees.  These dance events must contribute to the overall success
and support the growth of FanimeCon.

Once again, PLEASE NOTE that DJs and Performers will need to obtain their own entry to the convention.

Questions/comments regarding these provisions should be sent to [email protected].

-   All Dance Staff positions and performers are on a volunteer basis
     (there is no financial compensation).
-   All Dance Staff positions and performers must adhere to the requirements, rules, and code
of conduct for all FanimeCon Staff members and attendees.
-   DJs must have been selected through the DJ Selection Process
(Exception: Industry and Guest of Honor DJs)
-   Staff participation or  previous FanimeCon Performance experience will not guarantee a timeslot on the
     2017 DJ Schedule.
o   Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2016
         o   Application Requirements
+   Every applicant will be contacted by a Selection Committee member.
+   In Addition to the Application, DJs must provide:
                        •   A 30 Minute (minimum) mix of what they intend on playing if selected.
They can provide the selection committee their submission by
sending an email link or through an arrangement with the
Selection Committee. This can be a link to a soundcloud, mixcloud,
google drive, or file share site.
o   Submission of this mix gives the Dance Management Team your
approval to use this mix in the future for promotion of the Dance Event.
o   Selections will be based on skill, music format, equipment used, participation, and contribution to FanimeCon.
o   Applicants under the age 18 at the start of the 2017 event will not be considered.
o   The Dance Management Team will contact applicants between Jan and Feb
o   Final selections will be made and selected DJs will be notified by February 1, 2017.
o   DJs that were not selected will be notified on February 16, 2017.

i should have clarified this was meant for inhalers to asthma treatment and not battery operated nicotine delivery systems or nicotine inhalers more commonly referred to "vapes".

It's a sad world where that type of distinction needs to be spelled out.

There were over 10 people that claimed their vapes were for medicinal purposes....clearly identifying that the juice was not your typical nicotine or 0 nic juice...

It should also be mentioned that even if you have a prescription for marijuana, don't try to bring it into the dance.

I hope this brings some clarity to the rule and why it exists.  If you have an asthma inhaler or insulin, ask at the door and the correct accommodation will be made OR STICK IT IN YOUR POCKET.

state your case at the entrance.  Your inhaler must fit in a pocket since it can't be used as an excuse to bring in a bag.

this is an unofficial answer:

A fan event is an event or activity that requires resources that a normal panel room can't provide.

....not sure how the dance got to be so lucky to be the gateway to the maps, but since we're on this topic, we will be enforcing the "NO BAGS, NO EXCEPTIONS" rule, so keep in mind that fan storage is located in the Hilton Market Room.

i've seen people switch badges all the time.  you should probably be asking how old they are if you are doing something that requires that..and on another note...shouldn't it be 18 not 21...I mean...Fanime is a dry convention...why would they differentiate who can drink or smoke (with the new cali law)....?

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Hosting a car event?
March 23, 2016, 12:31:48 AM
Quote from: SirRachaSan on March 15, 2016, 12:08:38 AM
I was wondering if it is possible to create a car meet or host a car event associated or with Fanime? By creating a car event joined with Fanime, it will not only bring in more revenue but more people as well. Allowing both group to come together in a single week to have more experience for everyone. As people can enjoy the car scene or the animation scene. I'm pretty sure that many anime lovers are into cars, and car enthusiast are also into anime. I've had this idea in a long time and plan on holding a small car event. For cosplayers can be models if they wanted for the cars, and many photographers/cinematographer can come out and take these photos/videos. Also car companies may come out and maybe set up booths or etc. There are a lot of ideas to come to mind and many opportunities for everyone. If this is to happen, I hope on becoming a part of creating it. Please feel free to comment of your thoughts about the topic.
I've worked 2 other anime con associated car shows this year and I'm curious what are you basing the statement "bring in more revenue" is. (feel free to pm me)

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Sponsorship?
November 16, 2015, 05:10:21 PM
Sponsorship is not free money, and with every sponsor comes a new set of rules and requirements.  Also, if a big sponsor comes in one year and pulls out for the future, could the con sustain expectations?  If you sell out just a little, you might end up selling out on everything..look at levi's stadium.
#37
"Cosplay is not consent" is definitely a term that those in the community are familiar with and understand, but as someone
earlier pointed out...what about people who only go to FanimeCon or are first timers.  From my own experience I can offer the following thoughts:

10 things to remember as a cosplayer:
(1) Never do anything you are uncomfortable with.
(2) Ask the photographers information before agreeing to be photographed.  At the very least take a picture of them or their badge.
(3) It's your right to refuse.  If you are uncomfortable, decline. If they follow you, find a staff member.
(4) Use your best judgement. (never believe someone when they say it's for their "Private" collection)
(5) ^ If you feel like your judgement is impaired, schedule a different time.
(6) If you feel pressured or extorted into something, walk away and find a staff member.
(7) Professional photographers will never touch you.  This is a common amateur mistake.  Let them know it's not ok.
(8) Theoretically, if you are under 18, you can't sign a release, your guardian has to.
(9) Report anything unethical or suspicious.
(10) A lot of attendees (cosplayers and photographers) might be awkward/socially inexperienced.  If you see someone in a bad situation, help them out by finding a staff member/rover (or call the # on the back of your badge).  A few years ago I witnessed a few underage girls posing in troubling poses.  I went and got a rover.  The cosplayers might have been game for it, but often time people (not just youth) forget that these pictures could follow you for the rest of your life.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Age Segragated Dance
September 08, 2015, 10:47:50 PM
We will review the feasibility of an age separated dance.  Please realize with a nightly attendance of 2200 to 4700 it is not realistic to do that many id checks.  It is more realistic to do an Under 18 Only event.

Mod edit: its called a dance

I stand corrected in my earlier response.  The first aid station was NOT marked on this year's maps.

I know this isn't the right place for me to post this, but I feel like it could catalyze additional helpful comments from other non-staffers.

A simpler Mobile Website (that didn't necessarily have the tremendous amount of images eating away at my data plan) which was a little more straight to the point.

After Con starts, a section on the website (mobile and full browser)  specifically for corrections to the program guide/pocket guide should be created.  2 of the biggest errors in the printed versions were the time and location of Fan storage (naming was also not consistant).  This is important because while con ops/prog ops might have been notified of the change, infodesks still use the published sources (website -> prog guide/pocket guide -> then radio escalation to prog ops) as a reference.  That means that if something is printed wrong and a change is reported to prog ops, that information didn't seem to get passed on to the infodesks unless asked to escalate over the radio.  Ideally, this would include errors (i.e.: fan storage, first aid), changes (i.e.: fan storage hours of operation, dance bag rule), cancellations (i.e.: who wants to walk to the fairmont just to discover the panel was cancelled), or warnings/notices (i.e.: corridor 3 Bathrooms for SJCC staff use only until 3, access elevators out of service, water fountains near artist alley have low water pressure, APBs on individuals of interest that people should be careful of, and perhaps one day even shuttle or parking lot status).

Perhaps a randomizer button app on the mobile website for "I don't know what to do <right now> or at <time>" that picks something random on the schedule and responds with "Why don't you try ...."

I guess a side question...how come the concessions in the back of ex. hall 3 are never open?  Even though it's not much healthier, it's gotta be better for late night snacks then whatever is left of the pastries at peete's.

It might be cost prohibitive or not work with the current registration system, but perhaps people who take photos of cosplayers should register (when they pick up their badge) getting a visible registration number for their camera strap (similar to peacebonding) so that if someone has a problem with them they are more easily identifiable (this would require attendees to recognize this effort and always ask for a photographer's reg # before posing).  Additionally, if photographers later post their galleries, they could label it based on their photographer reg# and people would know where to look.
