Title: Free Cardboard Robot Costume Giveaway
Post by: Shionami on March 28, 2010, 08:10:09 PM
Hello to everyone reading this. As suggested by the topic, I am offering to give away my cardboard robot costume from last year's Fanime. Some of you may remember seeing a robot waddling around the convention center; yeeeeeah, that was me. Anyway, it's a bit beaten up from a 2 hour glompfest but still intact. If you're interested in claiming this costume, post a comment in this thread and maybe why you want/deserve it. Depending on the demand for the costume, I might make a contest out of it. No questions asked on what you're going to do with it, as long as you don't mutilate it. >.<

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3064%2F3024892220_1e5fc70835.jpg&hash=17d73cf6ab07bd735cff900dff6c975feef447a3)

A few disclaimers:
- The head as of now is flattened and not assembled. I've also taken out the lights for its eyes.
- The "skin" of the robot is a bit dirty, you might want to re-skin the robot with brown "grocery bag" type of paper.
- As for the person the costume was made for; I'm 5'5" and super skinny, just so you know.
- The lighting in the head is comprised of a few insulated wires, 4 AA batteries, two light switches, and two mini light bulbs (costs about $10).

If you have any questions, just post them in the thread and I'll try to answer them asap.

Deadline for the offer: April 30, 2010

Hell, I'll claim it.
I have always wanted to do some cosplaying but lack the time/money to create/buy one, so this sounds like the perfect opportunity to get into some cosplay.
Plus it just won't be Faninme without the Box Robot  ;)

Case in point, yes, I want it.

Were you also at Fanime 2008? If so, I got your picture!

Her name is Danboard, by the way.

IC

I've always refered to him as Boxy Brown, because for some reason a cardboard robot reminds me of a cardboard box with an afro.

Now for pro pick:

She's a side-character from the Yotsubato! manga.

It's actually just a costume, there's a young girl inside.

Well as of now, the costume needs some work for it to actually be wearable once again. If you live in San Jose, CA, I could give the costume to whoever wins before the convention so that they could fix it up a bit. Although, I'm sure that sounds kind of shady and I'd rather give the costume away during the convention. We'll see how things go.  :-\

Well all it needs is to be reskined and the head needs to be reassemble, correct?

Well, if I presumably win, I am in the San Jose Area so it should not be a problem to pick it up so that I can repair it before con.
But Yes, we will see how things go.

I would like to try and claim it as well. ( U ω U )
I am a big fan of the Yotsubato and I really like your Danbooru cosplay! ( ^ ω ^ )
I first read Yotsuba in 2003 when my mother came back from Japan and bought me a Dengeki Daioh magazine.
I was very happy reading it as a middle schooler, but I was disappointed because I wouldn't know when I will ever get another Dengeki Daioh magazine for the next chapter ( ; 3 ; ) So when I became an 8th grader, I found book one at my school's book fair! And it was when it was still by ADV
*_____* Very important to me that it was published from ADV. I have all the manga at the moment, and books one through five I have are the original ADV translations and covers. Then book six and seven came out and they reprinted all of them because Yen Press acquired the license. ;___; But I purchased them anyway, I don't like Yen Press! They're getting all the good manga titles and charging more for them. Fuahhhh it makes me sad. I am now in 12th grade and I think when I first read Yotsuba, it helped me with English since I had the original Japanese chapter to compare with it. So that is why I want your Danbo costume, because Yotsubato has made a great impact on my childhood おねがいします~ (● ω ●)
You should be able to tell, I would really like your costume ( = ω = )

They have a happy home :3

A challenge of sorts will be posted within the next couple of weeks or so to determine the winner. I'm a bit swamped with exams at the moment and I haven't thought of a challenge yet. It won't be anything like drawing me a picture or doing me some sort of favor but something everyone could participate in and have a fair chance of winning.

Alright, so I'm done with stressful exams so let's start the game. For the next week or so I'm going to post a question each day and the first person to answer correctly in the thread will receive a point. The time of day in which I post the question will be random. A tie breaker question will be posted if at the end a tie results. Today's question will be a bonus:

Name one thing special about April 20th.  ;D 2 points to whoever can tell me the special thing related to danboard that happened today.

Um...while I admire your attention to results...from what I remember, the contest was based on who got it right first. Not who had the most free time on their hands. So yeah, you win. All your other info, POINTLESS.

Yes I put it up with the assumed idea that it would be pointless, but of course I could not resist naming off virtually every important event that has occured on this date in known history. That and Wikipedia made listing them so easy =P

WARNING: SHAMELESS PLUG

Official contest day [1]
I happen to know someone in real life who has posted in this thread. Find her/his Deviantart page and post a link to one of his/her deviations.

Criteria for points in today's challenge:
-Your answer won't count if it's a duplicate of any of the previous posts.
-3 points to first place, 2 to second place, 1 to third, -1 to 4th, and additional negative points to additional answer posts (General discussion does not count, so don't be afraid to comment on what you see if you've already used up your try.)
-1 try per person, negative points rule applies
-Bonus: By observing his/her gallery, guess what character I will be cosplaying this year at Fanime (1 try per person, does not count toward negative points rule) [2 points]

The previous question is still active by the way to those who missed the bonus run. I'll be accepting answers until the next question is posted. Previous question: Name one thing special about April 20th. 2 points to whoever can tell me the special thing related to danboard that happened today (4/20/2010).

As far as I'm concerned, no one answered correctly for the 2 point bonus

Good luck!

Aphaestus has a DeviantArt, and he has a photo in it with the Danboard Cosplay, mentioning it is his friend, So I am to assume the answer is Danboard.
I assume it is alright to mention the person sense the link will be posted and bring everyone else to his DeviantArt giving AutoAnswers.

Link: http://aphaestus.deviantart.com/art/Sniper-Rifle-WIP-153984292 (http://aphaestus.deviantart.com/art/Sniper-Rifle-WIP-153984292)

And as to the bonus, you will be cosplaying as a TF2 Sniper, as can be figured by the TF2 Sniper Prop and the Kukri Deviation, which is also for the TF2 Sniper Cosplay, mentions it is being made for a friend.

Official contest day [2]:
Note: You DO NOT have to go to this location.

If you take the Alum Rock/Mountain View light rail from the convention center, you will eventually stop at the Japantown/Ayer station. Heading north from the station and turning right onto Jackson puts you straight in Japantown. Down the street are a few restaurants but what I'm interested in is the grocery store. Name this grocery store for 2 points.

On a side note, this place sells decent bento lunches for $4.99 exactly. I often go there for lunch.  :D

HAHAHA TRUE DOMINATION!!!
Just some Calculations, If we assume an average of 3.5 points per question each day, multiply by 10, the the total points left would be 35. So all I need is to obtain ~16 to gain majority.
Of course these are all assumptions...

Is there a way there can be a certain given time you can give us the question? ; 3 ;

The only problem with that is that we will just have a bunch of us sitting on the thread at given time ready to post within seconds of question. THe only legit way to do it is have a wide range time span inwhich the question will be posted, like say between 6PM to 12AM.

Name one thing special about April 20th.  ;D 2 points to whoever can tell me the special thing related to danboard that happened today.

...But happy 100th post. :D

Edit: 10:00 PM - The 9 point grand total for this question is still up for grabs, don't give up so easily people!

Official contest day [7]:

In East San Jose there is a restaurant popular for its Cajun seafood. Often times the wait is an hour+ to be served. A modest place with delicious food, what is the name of this restaurant? [2 pts, may be increased if people have difficulty finding the place but I doubt it.  :P]

Bonus: Pictures of the Danboard costume from Fanime are floating around the internet. No, I'm not talking about the Danboard from Fanime 2008 (not me) but the Danboard from 2009 (me). Find one of these pictures and post the link. [2 pts] [one entry per person] [Pics from Aphaestus's Deviantart gallery DO NOT COUNT.]

I know of at least one VIDEO which had the costume, taken early Saturday morning last Fanime. Post the link to this video. [5 POINTS] [one entry per person]

Note: I'm not trying to blow my own horn. :P Just trying to offer a question that's somewhat challenging. The grand total of points needs a bit of balancing out so if you're relentless, you just might be able to catch up with TC_X0_Lt_0X. xD

Current tally:
SukebeStudios:1 pt
TC_X0_Lt_0X:10 pts +5 pts [sorry about that] = 15 pts +2 pts [Bonus]
KyuuBob:1 pt
Aphaestus:1 pt
LOVE.SAE: 5 pts

I've decided to put an extension on yesterday's question and today's question will be posted tomorrow at 4 PM (PST). So far no one has answered the main question correctly. I suggest you all use this time to try and answer the main question and if possible the bonus questions too. Depending on the turnout of this question and the next question, the final question may or may not be posted on Saturday @ 4 PM (PST).

Note: The main question has been bumped up to 5 pts. Along with the bonuses, the grand total is 12 pts.

Hey, sorry about not posting the question at 4 PM today. I was a bit tied up in school work. To make up for it, I'm offering bonus points based off of a dice roll for each participant.

Current tally:
SukebeStudios:1 pt +2 pts bonus roll = 3 pts
TC_X0_Lt_0X:18 pts +5 pts for Boiling Crab +4 pts bonus roll +3 pts video = 30 pts
KyuuBob:1 pt +6 pts bonus roll = 7 pts
LOVE.SAE: 8 pts +5 pts bonus roll = 13 pts

At this point in time, there is no point in going on. TC_X0_Lt_0X is our grand champion and wins the Danboard costume. I'm sorry if you did not win and I really would have liked to alter the post times for each day but my workload simply did not give me that opportunity. If any of you wish to build your own box robot in the future and would like a few pointers, I'd be glad to help.
Also, as a consolation, you may post an origami diagram for something and I'll be sure to make it for you and hand it over during Fanime. I'm not an expert but I'll try my best to fold moderately difficult designs and simple designs. Please keep your requests modest.

We have less than a month left so don't feel bad if you did not win because Fanime is almost here!  ;)

Blargh. Oh well ( ; 3 ; )
If I see someone wearing the Danboard cosplay this year, I will assume it is TC_X0_Lt_0X and grab his Danbo head and cry.
