Where's that like button when I need it? LOL

Hopefully Thursday is like today, in that the instructor opened the room early. Regardless, I won't be paying attention in class until hotel reservations are sorted out.

Awesome thread. You beat me to it!

Don't take my word for it, but if the Hyatt Place is anything like the Hyatt Regency, there's no deposit required.

Tell me about it. My class starts at 12:10, and I'm aiming to reserve a room at one of the more popular hotels.

The 2013 site is slated to go live Thursday around noon. That's your best bet. The staff's unfortunately slow this year.

I'm in. I think I ate there last year. Maybe not, as I had a healthy amount of alcohol in my system the whole weekend. But nonetheless, it sounds fun.

Meetings, Gatherings, and Get Togethers / Hookah!
« on: January 22, 2013, 10:15:57 PM »
I know this was brought up last year, but is anyone down to meet up for a hookah session, or many? Yes, there are hookah lounges in the area, but they're too expensive for what they are. So if anyone has a hookah and wants to bring it, maybe we can set something up. My friends and I smoked outside one of the Fairmont's exits last year and no one said anything.

I unfortunately don't have my 4-hose setup anymore, but I'm more than willing to bring my Egyptian hookah.

Well, just throwing the idea out there.

Last year's line was gnarly, but it wasn't too too bad (with the exception of the power outage that required staff to hand out water, which I didn't experience). I'd be more upset if I had to wait the same amount of time in line Friday morning instead, like a lot of my friends had to.

Right on! Thanks a lot! That's so much more manageable than the Fairmont.

Can anyone who's stayed at the Hilton last year tell us how much the deposit was? I really don't wanna deal with the Fairmont's $100/night deposit again.

The Fairmont was $89/night for a single bed, as stated previously. The parking situation isn't too bad. Here's what I did last year..

Dropped off my GF and our stuff at the Fairmont lobby. Then I drove to the other side of the block and parked in the parking lot near Psycho Donuts. If you leave Monday, you don't pay for parking since San Jose parking lots and garages are free on holidays. The walk from the Fairmont to the parking garage isn't too bad, especially since you just walk down the alley as if you were heading to Johnny Rocket's from the hotel.

Why not just walk to Pizza My Heart, or if you're into having beer with your pizza, 4th St. Pizza?

They're not far away at all.

Why delivery? 4th St. Pizza is only a couple blocks away, like where City Hall is. And the prices are low...

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Badge rule
« on: October 08, 2012, 11:02:04 PM »
Here's another idea. Considering the fact that people will try to pull one over on the badge checkers, why not require vendors to check badges as well? Sure, someone may be able to get in with an incorrect badge, but if they can't buy anything, all would be in vain.

Eh... I really don't like that idea. Yeah, I get the whole security thing, but it would kind of put a damper on the whole fun thing of Fanime.
How would that put a hamper on the fun of Fanime? I see in your sig that you've attended since 2010, so come 2013, you'll have four badges. That's somewhat reasonable, but what about people who've got 10+ badges on their lanyard?

This is more than a security thing, as money comes into play. I saw tons of people quickly flashing their badges to get in, and I've seen some of them who didn't have a 2012 badge. By allowing people to get in without proper badges, Fanime is losing money.

I personally like the idea of a telltale lanyard for every year. That way, if the badge doesn't match the lanyard, off they go.

When it comes down to it, I believe that the badge checkers are the only ones responsible. You guys volunteered for these positions, and you know well how crazy things can get. But Fanime TRUSTED you to do your jobs properly.

Who cares if it isn't always easy? Who cares if the lines are long? Slow down, check those badges, and do your job right the first time. Besides, once attendees get through the badge check lines, chances are they're still going to have to wait to play a game, check out merchandise, etc.

I know that congoers aren't forced to cosplay along with the theme, but it would be nice to see a theme that more people can cosplay with.

As for a poll, maybe there can be two. Like one year out, people will submit their ideas, and the staff can choose x-amount of themes to place in a poll. Have this poll open for, say, 6 months. Then place the top 4 themes in a final poll. Have this final poll open for maybe two weeks. Something along these lines would work pretty well IMO.

MPLe, yes, you did answer all of the questions I posted, but do I sense a bit of snarkiness in that reply? If so, I approve. :)

General Convention Discussion / A few questions about yearly themes
« on: June 03, 2012, 10:30:08 PM »
Exactly when are themes decided? And who comes up with them? Do the fans themselves have any say-so in the matter?

This past Fanime was my first since 2001, and I don't remember if there was a theme that year. I also know that sports was this year's theme, but I didn't see too many cosplayers adhering to it.

The reason I'm asking is because of how obscure next year's Gothic Fairytale theme is. Yes, I know that there's another thread on next year's theme, but this thread is about themes in general. But let's face it, a gothic theme, fairytale or not, can lead to a pretty drab con, especially if a lot of people decide to partake in the theme. I can assure you that I will not be doing anything gothic in my cosplays next year. Not that it really matters anyway...

I did a bit of forum searching and found out that the theme for the following year is announced during the closing ceremony, but that still doesn't answer who comes up with the theme itself. I've noticed a couple threads about theme ideas, but no real polls or anything of the sort. That being said, this makes me believe that the staff just comes up with the theme without any fan input.

Fanime is supposed to be 'By Fans, For Fans,' so is there a poll for yearly themes? Are suggestions welcome? OK, so next year's theme is decided, and probably won't change, but would there be a possibility of a Fan's Choice theme for 2014 and on?

Yea, a lot of questions, and who knows how many, if any at all, will be answered. Everyone's thoughts and concerns are welcome.

Gakuran, older Macross stuff (although I heard there was a lot of Macross merch at the swap meet), and pre-Gen 5 Pokemon stuff.

After unloading stuff off at your hotel, you can park at the lot above Psycho Donuts for the duration of con and leave on Memorial Day, free. They leave that arm up so you can just drive right out without paying or inserting your ticket. That's how I've been doing it for my FanimeCons thus far.
That wasn't the case this con, you had to pay to exit and few places validated
Actually, this was the case this year. I can personally vouch for it, and I have a picture of the gates being up on Monday on my Facebook. I've attempted to post the pic at the end of this post.

If you wanted to leave the garage prior to Monday, that's when you have to pay. If you park whenever you get there and don't leave the garage until Monday, you'll be able to leave free.

My GF and I may be going to Sacanime this year since we can go for free. And Kin-Yoobi is a possibility as well since we both live near Newark.
