Ideas and Suggestions / Fanime '14 App Feedback
May 31, 2014, 10:44:20 PM
The following are my two cents about the application that was made available on the Android Market/Play Store. I'm not sure if there was an iPhone app store application, but if there was - by all means let me know. (Mods - if there's already a thread of this somewhere, do what you see fit)

What I was anticipating in the "official app" was a more elegant method of keeping track of events throughout the day (panels, screenings, etc.) than utilizing either the paper guide or the .pdf provided on the website. They're both fine and dandy, and do exactly what they need to. However, I'm not a fan of the booklet myself and zooming in and out of a .pdf leaves a lot to be desired, especially when an application can provide the same kind of information when properly designed. However, what the app turned out to be was effectively a modified layout of the already-mobile version of fanime.com. I'm a bit dismayed as last year's application had the weekend schedule built into it (albeit with somewhat haphazard UI design), and this year it was absent. In designing 2015's application (if there will indeed be one next year,) I would very much appreciate the addition of the weekend's schedule included somehow in the application itself.

I have made the suggestion last year to perhaps research the possibility of transitioning to the Guidebook application. It seems to be a rather clean solution that would provide a way for users to acquire all pertinent information, including the maps, rules, and other things that the convention would like its members to know, as well as the schedules for the various events that would happen throughout the weekend, as well as give options for personal schedule-making and the like. I'd like it if the app devs to maybe consider it again instead of making a new application from scratch every year.

The point I'm trying to drive home is that the schedule is a very important part of the application that I would like to see implemented into any future iterations of the Fanime App. I hope to see an improvement in usability come next year.

That's covered. There's already a Fanime app for both iPhone and Android.

I just took a look at the one for Android. While technically functional, the interface of Guidebook is a bit more streamlined and accessible. Things like last-minute changes and schedule updates can be taken into consideration and sent to everybody with it without having to update an entire app, let alone making a new app year after year. Also, I noticed with the app you mentioned that hitting back doesn't take the user back one screen but instead closes the app. A minor design flaw, but one that doesn't even come up with Guidebook.

Anyway, as the board mentions, this is merely a suggestion. The paper pocket guide and .pdf are enough, but again - this would make things remarkably convenient since most people are checking their phones several times a day during the con, especially with a more elegant UI than a raw .pdf and the somewhat lackluster official(?) app.

This would basically be a supplement to the pocket guide that comes with the reg bag every year. I found myself using the PDF of the pocket guide a lot more than the actual paper booklet, although it was a bit inconvenient to navigate. I'm thinking that this would be an elegant alternative. The video can probably make it seem better than I can.

Siroi Danmakukun (sp?)

It's not so much a shooter as it is a dodger in that you're just doding pattern after pattern 'till you get hit. It may not be what you're looking for but it came to mind so I thought I'd put that out there.

I kinda wanna be a graphic designer

And then I realize what a lot of their paychecks look like.

I've heard that really good graphic designers do make bank, but that it's a VERY competitive field and for every successful graphic designer there about 10 who need a second job.

Lol. You need to stress the "VERY COMPETITIVE" part a little more. In graphic design, the majority of people don't do well... many of which don't even get jobs in their field. In an art major, you have to acknowledge the fact that you will be leading a life of uncertainty if you don't have anything that guarantees success for you, and you DO need talent and the ability to successfully contribute your work into good marketing. Another reason why graphic design is so competitive is because... many people choose to do it, thus the percentage of failing is a lot higher.

Art majors are somewhat whimsical, and it'd be awesome to be successful in one... but again, is VERY uncertain. I wanted to be a studio engineer, majoring in audio engineering, spending times learning programs, recording equipment, acoustics, etc... and realized that I could just use it as a hobby and choose a more stable and liberating major. If I become good enough IN art, then I wouldn't need to pay for a degree-- either I'd get an awesome scholarship or have a way to skip certain processes because I was certainly successful in that field above a majority, but that isn't the case.

Adding on to that - from what I've learned going to an art school for a year and a half, sometimes it's not WHAT you know that'll net you a job in any field; sometimes it's WHO you know. A diploma is all nice and good, but if you can't get people to see that diploma, you're better off using the backside of it as stationery. I'm not saying that a diploma is useless, because it does prove that you've learned the minimums of what's to be expected of a person in your field. Connections in the industry, however, can sometimes take you farther than what a piece of paper can.

You'll do just fine... and, actually, stay off the drugs they give you.

at the risk of sounding like a druggie, i'd much rather they knock me out with that stuff and perform the surgery rather than me being conscious through the whole thing. i've had teeth-yanking surgery when i was a kid, and just hearing them things being torn from my gums was enough to hop off the chair and catch the next bus home. and besides...it's a sensation that's matched by nothing else, these medical-grade concoctions

mayonnaise.

i'm not talking "just a dab'll do ya". i'm talking a 1:1 bread to mayo ratio. i gotta learn to like dry sandwiches. -_-

man, i don't feel too reassured by any of these stories...especially considering my wisdom tooth surgery is some time in the next few weeks.

Oh I had no idea what pocky was, but I damn well knew every Filipino kid of the day grew up with Yan-Yans and those tiny jello cups.

I know straight ahead what you mean by 'those tiny jello cups'! I grew up with both Yan-Yan and those together. Pocky is overrated. Otakus like...orgasm over it or something. "OMFG POCKY! LULZ. POCKY RUULLEZ" x3 Especially the original chocolate one. I don't see what's so special about it. Persnally, I think it's bitter. >.o with it being dark chocolate and all.

We should stick to vegetables! xD

That's the thing. There ISN'T anything special about it.

Most Asian kids have had those tiny lychee jello cups. A lot of them grew up with both Pocky and Yan Yan. Both are okay snacks, both are overrated. Don't speak for Otaku when you say that they orgasm over the mention of Pocky-- there are tons of weeaboos that treat ANYTHING Asian and/or specifically Japanese the same way.

Pocky isn't bad. It's a cheap snack. I liked it as a kid, along with a shitload of other Glico and Meiji snacks and candies. The only reason people love or are against it is because it's a mainstream Asian snack advertised in America via anime. Liking it or hating doesn't make anyone cooler. It's just following a trend, then being against a trend after they get over it, assuming it's still trendy.

What about ramen? Those so-called otaku are all over that, amirite? There's good ramen, bad ramen, of which many of them can't even tell the difference. Ramen doesn't suck. It's not "otaku-food". They're noodles. It's food. You like them because they're tasty, not because you saw it on Naruto and think it'll make you cooler than everyone else.

Blah blah blah... if you don't like dark chocolate because it's bitter, maybe you shouldn't have chose dark chocolate? It's SUPPOSED to be bitter.

A bit off topic, but...

I honestly can't touch ramen anymore.

You know those foods that your parents fed you all the time when you were a baby (not Gerber brand mushy gunk, actual food in a form you can identify) and you'd scarf it down not knowing any better? For me, it's ramen. I can't even look at a bowl of the stuff without having to turn my head away for air.

Back on topic...

JT, these pastillas, JT - OMG. OMG, JT, these pastillas. When I first had these, I thought they were going to be identical to White Rabbit or something. Pastillas put WR to freakin' shame. Sugary AND milky textures in the same damn package? Yes.

yan-yan is made of childhood win.

did anyone else ever eat bland sticks, leaving one behind for a single, ultra-iced stick of messy mouth-orgasm-inducing awesome-ness?

cuz that's what i'd do. or sometimes, if i'm feeling adventurous (and slightly kinky), i'd eat all the sticks and just finger my tongue with pure icing. GOOOOOD night, if that didn't teach me the meaning of "sugar high", it's just not in my vocabulary. :o

I'm trying to learn Mei-Fang. The thing is, I'm thinking about learning her w/a Jam state of mind, which I quickly learned was my first mistake. I really need to wrap my head around the whole homing thing, because there's very little i can JC > IAD out of now.

I tripped on it sometime at the end of last year, but I forgot it. If I remember correctly, it had something to do with The World: R2 and had the words "Coming Soon!" or something to that effect.
