Title: Reasonably Priced Places to Eat near Fanime Con
Post by: Tsuchimi Rin-chan on April 04, 2006, 02:52:14 PM
Does anyone living in the San Jose Area know of any good and reasonably priced places to eat during Fanime Con.  Hotel food is serving arms and legs of atrocious prices and it would be nice if the con can put up a map of highly recommended places to eat in Downtown San Jose.
QuoteTHAT IS NOT FAST FOOD OF COURSE
[/b]

I am from San Francisco and I was lost in finding a good place to eat back in 2004 when the con moved from Santa Clara and I missed out last years Fanime due to Cancer.

Anyway please post your recommendations and prices of food to us con goers on a traveling budget.

Domo!!!!

P.S. I wish Fanime would put up a map of Downtown San Jose with places to eat inside the program guide because it will help us starving and drooling otaku.

Don't forget all the places just a few blocks away. Sonoma Chicken Coop, The Old Spaghetti Factory, and Pizza Chicago are just a few.

I believe there should be some documentation this year on where to eat, but don't quote me on that. Believe me, there are tons. I would actually go and say one of the best things about the move to the SJCC is the abundance of food around the con site.

It's across the street from McD's.

A map of the downtown area (with flags indicating not only where food is, but atm's and other such useful info) should either be in the program guide or as a separate sheet of paper you can pick up.

mapquest display of convention center address 150 W San Carlos St (*red star*) with nearby restaurants
results = 150++
organized by distance
display 10 per page
It looks like the first 100 restaurants listed are within reasonable walking distance.

link (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&address=150%20W%20San%20Carlos%20St&city=San%20Jose&state=CA&zipcode=95113%2d2005&formtype=address&location=w8bpAFbyaUMx5wyvaAGtFKJ3blPGd8cLs%2blwQyZGnmDbE%2bJ8Ty96QbVxY9w7GcqXwkfPDwaamn43LSpZMf3QMloVdILen%2f1WqDJ%2b4%2boFBJorz%2bnl1hh53seD32N8YuT8gcyDCLhVSAK7j0xDEeUnlQ1bBYwGzJfZ&id=443488fd-0030f-067e3-8dc10c40&q=Restaurants&cat=Restaurants&skip=0)

I have this theory that if you go (in the direction of the nearby college), the restaurants get cheaper.

that's not really true. They don't get cheaper.

You have to realize you're looking at two different types of restaurants; fast food and traditional style restaurants. Of course the fast food will be cheaper and colleges are more likely to have a fast food restaurant. In fact I've never seen a college with the other. It'll be amusing to see. XD

Thanks for the link. ^.^

Oh, let's not forget Tapioca Express on the other side of State. And that pizza restaurant nearby there. (anyone remember the name?) I'm surprised that I haven't seen a round table pizza or well known pizza chain downtown...
And Peanuts. (near state)
But I doubt that people want to go too far for food.

There's always a Quicklys somewhere in Downtown SJ on a path to the left of McDonalds. Not sure if it's cheap, but it's always good for anyone who's up for Pearl Milk Tea in various flavors.

oh yeah, that new shopping center right behind the san jose arena. i think that place has some, i guess. since it opened like a month ago.

but for more decent grub, i suggest head towards Stevens Creek, where Valley Fair and Santana Row. well it is also good if it's far enough or away from the con.

Hm.. Davis has the (student run) Coffee House. Not exactly sit down, but damn the food is good... for college students!

Cal Poly SLO actually as a sitdown restuarant, as well as Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill..

Anyways, Lee's gets the fourth vote. A couple of their sandwiches have saved me from starvation during them incredibly long staff meetings ^_^

You should ask SJSU students.  I discourage going to any pearl tea place for an actual meal.  They are expensive and sub-par.  Also, explore more of Downtown.  Get some color in yer blood.

I recommend everything on the menu at Hally K. Ono.  It's a cute sit-in with a Pacific Islander fusion cuisine.  Seriously, everything on the menu is bomb from the ciabatta sandwiches to the chicken wings.  Reasonably priced if you want a quaint, laxed atmosphere.

There is Good Karma vegan food on Santa Clara and 8th, which is a ways off.  I know there's vegans out there in anime land.  Even if you aren't a strictly vegan eater, you will be satisfied with the texture and taste of their 'meat' dishes.

Most importantly, check out Vietnamese food and Salvadorean food.  Remember during the con that you're in San Jose, and some of you have come from long and far to be here.  Might as well expand the horizons of your palate.

Tengu is shady.  Goodness, gracious, don't any of you talk to SJSU students who have to put up with this stuff?

Trying to think of stuff no one's listed.

Lee's is good; it's on 7th street by the Albertson's, and there's a Tung Kee (noodle place) right next to it.

I highly recommend giving Hydration a try; the bentos are definitely a cut above the typical pearl milk tea place IMHO.

Down 3rd street (towards the convention center IIRC) is another vietnamese sandwich place called Da Kao that also has a sit-down restaurant section with Pho and other good stuff. The staff always seem kind of irritated at the customers, but the food is good and the sandwiches are very cheap.

There's a decent Japanese place called Smile Sushi on second street, a few blocks up from the main library. Their lunch combos are about $8-10.

There's a Quizno's on 2nd street by Starbucks and the Repertory Theater, and next to it a pita place and "Lollicup" (a pearl milk tea type place that has Hawaiian-style bentos) though I haven't tried either of those yet).

Its been a while since I checked my posted thread.

Anyway I would like to ask you guys in San Jose, if there are any places open after hours say 9pm on up.

Say that a Late Evening Musicfest or Der Cosplay is either finished or ongoing and you decided to give up and retreat to someplace to eat.

Any good restaurants that are safe to go with friends you guys can recommend to the Fanime Attendees and Mal Nourished  Staffer's

Thanks and Menchi is not an Option.

There's no more Albertson's there. It's going to be a "Super Mercado" mexican supermarket.

As for after hours places to eat, there's always those boba places: Tapioca Express, Hydration, Quickly, Q-Cup, etc... they're almost always open till midnight or later. Pizza My Heart is also open till midnight, I think.

There's also an International House of Pancakes (a FanimeCon board favorite) if you take the light rail about 4 stops north (Japantown/Ayer station). There's also a Denny's south on Market Street, but you'd need a car to get there. [I'd hate to say this, but that Denny's is near a certain famous Wendy's restaurant....]

Hello chil'rens!

My minions and I are finishing the program guide as we speak and we thought 'hey, what could we do to get the members to love us?'.

So we decided to include a food map of the cheap eateries around the convention center in the program guide! It lists prices for some of the eateries, but the names alone from the other non-priced places give you an idea of how much they will be, so we hope that this helps!

Enjoy the con, and I hope you like the program guide! It's going to be PRETTY (the guide, not the con...well maybe the con, but that sounds weird o.O )!

Although I wouln't exactly advocate going there -- the chili is pretty unpalatable without any... additions -- it was in the news that that incident turned out to be a hoax; the woman responsible got nine years in prison for attempted grand larcency. (Link to news info (http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Category:Chili_Finger_Incident)).

That Denny's is very average for this area. If it's not too late, you can take the 66 or 68 buses and get deposited right across the street from it.

I'd have to double-check, but if I remember right Hydration is open until like 10pm or so.

There's nothing worth noting that's west of the freeway on San Carlos. There is that donut shop and mexican fast food, but I never ate there before.

There is, however, some good sports bars and breweries near the HP Pavilion, like Tied House. If the Sharks go all the way in the playoffs, expect a LOT of people in that area...actually, the entire downtown area from HP Pavilion to SJSU. San Pedro Square has their traditional hanging of the Sharks' jerseys and all restaruants have some kind of Sharks' special. (Sonoma Chicken Coop has a chocolate hockey puck dessert....)

the SJ Downtown Association has a list of pretty much all the places to eat downtown - http://www.sjdowntown.com/bus.html

The thing with SJ is that most of them are either fast food or super expensive sit-down places.

Some places I know from experience are pretty reasonable for a sit-down meal:

Gordon Birsch, $8-15 for lunch (pasta, pizza, burgers, sandwhiches, oh yah.. beer)
Johnny Rockets (burgers, fries, milkshakes, retro 50s diner)
Peggy Sue's (burgers fries, milkshakes, retro 50s eatery)
Le Boulanger $4-8 (sandwiches, soups, bakery)
Sonoma Chicken Coop, $7-13 (salads, rotisserie chicken, pasta, sandwiches)
Old Spaghetti Factory, $7-11 (Italian - pasta)
La Victoria (Mexican -burritos)
Iguana's (Mexican - burritos)
Tengu Sushi (Japanese - sushi, donburi, teriyaki)
Pizza Chicago (Italian - pizza)
Pizza My Heart (pizza)
House of Siam $8-14 per dish, but it's family style so you'll typically order 3 dishes for 2 people (Thai - fried rice, curry, prawn/beef/chicken/seafood dishes)
Dac Phuc (Vietnamese - pho, rice plates)

If you're in for a snack or some fast food
Cafe Boba (Bubble Tea)
Hydration (Bubble Tea)
Quiznos (Sandwiches)
Starbucks (Coffee)
Subway (Sandwiches)
Togo's (Sandwhiches)
Jack in the Box (fast food)
Ben & Jerry's (ice cream)

Stay away from:
McDonald's - They have really horrible and slow service, kinda defeats the purpose of fast food
P.F. Chang's, The City Grill, Eulipia, Agenda, restaraunts inside the nearby hotels - They're all pretty pricy not to say they aren't tasty
Original Joe's - I've been, it wasn't very good.

Jack in the Box is open 24 hours and La Victoria (the awesome taqueria next door to JitB) is open until about 2 AM I believe. Also, the Pita Pit next to the San Antonio light rail station is open til 3 AM Thurs-Sat and Midnight every other night.

There's also Kukar's House of Pizza, the pizza place that downtown SJ forgot. It's walking distance behind the convention center down Almaden Ave. (SJGP's pit road). There was an 05 staff meeting there one time, too. I don't know the hours of ops or the general prices for pizza. It looks like a sports bar so I guess it's midnight.

It's also the closest place to buy a Lotto ticket...^^,

OMFG, Igauana's. 'Nuff said.

I have really bad memory of where it is from the CC, but it wasn't far, although somewhat hidden. I think maybe across the street from Pizza My Heart, Ben & Jerry's, etc.?, right next to the henna tatto shop and right under a comic book shop.

Anyways, not only do they serve an insane amount of food, but they serve an INSANE amount of food. Also, I think some late-night raver friends of mine went and got burritos from there at like 2 am, but I can't really verify that, so don't use me as a realiable source  :P

Ugh Crack in the box is horrid, unless you like to get food poisoning :O

I actually went to The Tech cafe for some instant grat and the prices weren't too bad for what you get.  Oh yes there is a list online from the SJ Downtown Association for resturants:

Also there is a couple of grocery stores in walking distance.

Quote from: "Oneiros"I have really bad memory of where it is from the CC, but it wasn't far, although somewhat hidden. I think maybe across the street from Pizza My Heart, Ben & Jerry's, etc.?, right next to the henna tatto shop and right under a comic book shop.

You're probably talking about La Victoria. We mentioned about it in an earlier post, I think.

Around that same block are 2 other eating places with cheap food: China Chen is a typical noodle house, didn't eat there before but always drive by it. Dakao, a Vietnamese sandwich place that's not Lee's.

Quote from: "Oneiros"OMFG, Igauana's. 'Nuff said.
Unfortunately Iguana's is gone. Something about having issues with the building owner. In its place is "Macho Taco," which FWIW is decent. The comics shop (which is now called "Funny Monkey Comics") moved around the corner, downstairs from the tattoo place. The owner (Kevin) is a pretty cool guy BTW.

If La Victoria is the place that I'm thinking of, my friends and I ate there every day (not for every meal though). Not only is the food great, but super cheap. The breakfast burritos are like $2. Also there's an asian noodle place near the movie theatre (camera 12) on 2nd or 3rd street that has excellent food for a reasonable price. Good drinks too. I don't remember the name though.

here you go,

http://www.as.sjsu.edu/asts/pdfs/Busstopmapforfall2005.pdf

It's not a definite map of course, but it pretty much sets the walkable perimeter of where you'd want to go. (about from Almaden to 11th street, San Salvador to Santa Clara st.). It also shows quite a few restaurants.

For any vegan/vegentarians, there are 3 restaurants on Santa Clara St., respectively on 7th st (Good Karma), 9th (Tofu), and 12th (Vegetarian house).

If you want to explore, you can take take the light rail 4 stations north (actually 2, since San Fernando and St. James are under construction) to Japantown/Ayer. From there, head north and turn right at the first intersection (Jackson St.,) and walk a few blocks east. There are quite a lot of Japanese retaurants there.

If you need some snack/drinks, you can go to 2nd st and santa clara. There's a supermarket called Zanotto, and a couple small convienient stores. If you want vietnamese stuff, go south to 2nd and San Salvador St.
