This will be set during Fanime 2008. Looking to set up a fun night on the town. A possible gathering for anyone looking to meet other fanime enthusiasts. Please let me know if anyone is interested. Groups welcome. Please respond with ideas. Only for people willing to get to know others.
sounds fun sadly I dont know the area at all so id just follow those familar with the area
Wasn't there one last year? I am not quite sure but I heard there was, but missed it becuase I didn't know anyone. I'd like to go as well, but the same as Japanvideogames...I don't know the area to suggest anything. :/

there was, but it wasn't as restricted as this one is.
Try and get as many to attend as possible. I think it would be a lot of fun and so Ill start looking into a place that is local. I'm no currently living in San Jose but will do my best to find a top notch place. So now I know people are interested, is there any preference at this time?
the reason why it seem restrictive is because of your age cap.
ironically a portion of the fan base/gathering types here might not be over 21 so missing out meeting new some people who may have a mixed group friends of all ages.
to clarify - are you looking for drinking / party buddies? or just general hanging out with mature people who could afford to eat at a nice place in down town san jose?
ironically not everyone is into drinking either - so the thought of drinking with random ppl might be giving the wrong impression.
i think the more you clarify on what your looking for in this 21+ dinner gathering the better you might get responses.
just my 2 cents. :)
As I remember over the past anime gatherings that anytime a group get together was set up...
1. Many kids would show then cause problems by being rowdy and get us thrown out of the restaurant
2. Bail on the bill and cause others in the group to pay
3. People who couldn't afford to eat began begging for money while trying to cut into conversations
I figured a more reasonable standard such as setting an age cap would be best
If this would be a problem with those actually interested in joining us in this group who are younger then please voice your opinions
I do not run a fascist system, just a logical one. I will drop the age cap if people who truly are interested want to join us.
you definately bring up valid points, which clarify anyone else who may have had questions (myself included)...
ironically theres always going to be someone short on the tab (whether its a buch of perfect strangers or a old friend from elementary school).
we've had ppl bail before, so again its the semi risk anyone takes in a social gathering. its like inviting ppl to a pot luck and no one brings food.
realisitically (even i admit myself) that there will always be a freeloader. its sorta human nature. I tend to wait until ppl are full and then i take table scraps because i hate wasting food. :p
anyway i guess as far as ideas. the place ive know that pretty decent is Original Joe's nice setting and really close walk from the convention center.
i think you may also want to set a hard date because otherwise i think everyone else may have already made plans.
good luck with this gathering and i hope you guys have fun.
Thank you and I do appreciate your points. You pointed out some things that I didn't conjure up. I will look into Original Joe's and some others (walking distance would be best) but need to have a general number of people to solidify the place and date. Thanks again
You'll drop the age? I'm 17, relativly reserved and I love meeting people. I don't do the rowdy, loud scene at all and I don't go to stores or resturants unless I have a sufficient amount of money ( I don't do the insufficient scene either.) I'd perfer to stay within walking distance because I'm coming with a group and we're staying for a while then leaving the con (we're coming back the next day), too. I'd love to meet up and I hope my age isn't an issue... PM me more details? I hope things work out! n_n
I am 22 years-old and I am interested.
I'm 21+ and I am interested 8)
I probably cannot do it on Saturday and Sunday though..
and I have karaoke contest + swap meet on friday... ???
I'm 62 ;D can I come :D
I actually know the area a bit even though I live in Sacramento(elk grove to be exact)
I might be interested......just maybe......
My group number is going to flatten out at around a dozen give or take. I am sure we'd all be interested. All but one of us are 21 or older but unless we're going drinking (which WILL be happening in out hotel room a-plenty, invites are tentative but cute girls with ID are always welcome. haha) the age limit is not entirely necessary.
I've met my fair share of idiots/freeloaders/losers/kids who are over 21.
I am sure we could work something out to where those who want to go can, and so we'll all have a good time.
As far as Joe's goes, are they open again? Last year they were being renovated. There is also PF Chang's, Johnny Rocket's plus a plethora of other places all within walking distance.
And if worse comes to worse, I will hijack those of you who do want to go (but don't meet the age limit) and we can go somewhere else where everyone is welcome. =P
I'm 22, and down for meeting new people.
Definitely keep it 21+, it just makes things easier.
so is this still greenlight, and where is it gonna be at?

Hm this sounds pretty fun, Id be down if Im invited to go ;D It's my first con so Im looking forward to meeting new people :D
Well, lets just go with open age and start hunting for a place now. Any Ideas? Plus im looking for a room to stay in. Not picky, just let me know. More then willing to pay my share.
Well I'm 23, and I'd love to hang out with other anime lovers. Sadly I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to that area. If you got some planes please let me know, I'll show up. Btw I'll be there on Sat and Sun.
I think this sounds liek a good idea, especially the 21+. No offense but I would like to meet some more folks around my age. Im feeling old.
I'm 25 and I'm more then happy to come to this. I just tend to hate mornings. Mornings are evil.
I think we should have a rule that ANYONE coming should show either a Credit Card, Bank Card, or some money to decrease the risk of people bailing or free loading.
You do realize that that post is really old and that the OP intended this during fanime and that its over
Lulz. n_n Poor thing.
Oh whoops. My mistake. I guess I wasn't looking carefully enough at the dates. I thought it was a little more current then that. Oh well huzzah for necromancy in raising this thread from the dead <.<
Although why not have a NEW gathering then? O.o
So let's start for next year ;D

Hmm...not a bad idea.
Well there we go! WE should start planning a NEW dinner for Fanime! ^_^
i approve. this is s good idea - this makes it easier for people in our age demographic to meet each other. ever since i turned 19, i felt as though i had aged out of the key demographic for fanime - or at least the mode demographic. I would love to meet people 21 and up, the more mature side of fanime.
im down.
You would only find disappointment in your hope to find maturity in anime lovers.

I'd say Anime Fans CAN be quite mature...I think it just depends on the people, and such.
Although I have to say it would be nice to go to a meeting with some of us old foagies...those of us who remember Anime life Before Pokemon.

No I mean back when Viz controlled the majority of Manga and charged $16 per manga! Heck even after TokyoPop started selling manga for $5 Viz STILL continued to overcharge for their manga for at least a year or more...
Or how about before there was even Anime on Cartoon Network had less then 5 different animes they showed, one of which was DBZ. Back when DBZ was like the ultimate in Anime Action Series!!

Obviously you didnt get the joke there
but I would have to agree most older fanime fans arent so mature, for the most the older ones I have known usually are socialy akward and always brought their laptops or whatever. Or they would just talk about anime rather than a decent subject like fashion or current events there are a few anime fans that are older that do have a stable lifestyle and dont have anime take over their lives :T kinda like a decent balance besides I like to talk about other things rather than anime like lolita fashion for instance or music
so Tl;DR you wont find many mature folk in terms of those who like it
*bump for great justice*

Well you and I have had a vastly different experience with older fans. Personally I have waaay too many other interests to have anime take over my life. I also tend to have really good social skills...except oddly enough when it comes to talking to people on here. I've had several nasty experiences on here.
Although I happen to LOVE the Lolita fashion. I bought one of the issues of the Gothic & Lolita Bible in English as soon as I found out it was around. Which wasn't until they had two issues out already. I just wish I wasn't so poor, otherwise I could at least afford to buy another copy. I have waaaay too many people owing me far too much money. Like my roomates from FanimeCon barely paid anything for our room last year >.<
My other Anime friends have various interests outside of Anime as well, such as tabletop gaming, friends, family, video games, reading, and more. ^_^ Did I mention most of my other Anime friends were above the age of 20?
Maturity does not necessarily correlate with age. I've known enough mature younger people, and immature older people to substantially change any preconceptions I may have had that older people act more like adults (which is a very vague adjective).
Then again there are also many different concepts of maturity. For instance the kind of immaturity you don't want is the type that creates a huge ruckus in a fine dining establishment and gets you all booted out. But there is also immaturity that can make people laugh and help them to have a good time.
I don't quite see why it needs to be 21+ unless you're going to a bar or a venue which only allows those who are of drinking age.
If you don't mind my input, one very nice restaurant I've eaten at is the E&O Trading Co. (http://www.eotrading.com/) Sort of a very nice pan-Asian restaurant. I would suggest semi-formal wear. It would be silly to come in cosplay, especially if your cosplay includes very large and bulky props. Probably not best for a huge party, but if a lot of people want to go, splitting into two or more parties is perfectly okay too. It's best enjoyed as a meal eaten over mid-mature conversation. You don't need to be silent and a wise man, but you shouldn't act like a little kid either, and make loud raspberry noises, or farting with your armpit.
You'd have to bring about 20 bucks for your meal. If you're 21 or over, they serve drinks, and also have a bar. It has a VERY nice ambiance. I've only eaten there once, at my first Fanime in '04 so I haven't had recent experience with it, but what I remember was that it was an awesome restaurant, and great food.
Also good if you just want a quiet night out with a special someone.

Amen! BROTHA IN THE STRUGGLE!
I think the point of making it 21+ was that it increases the chances of people having enough money pay for their meals...and have enough decency to NOT make enough ruckus to get us all thrown out.
As it was said before, they've had problems with beggers, people splitting on the bill, AND rowdyness that gets EVERYONE thrown out.
If I were to go to this dinner, I would also prefer that it be 21+
That does not mean that all of us over 21 would drink, just that if one of us were in the mood to have a few drinks, we could. Legally. But aside from the whole alcohol issue, I would rather not spend an evening w/ HS students. Thanks.

I agree life is WAY to freaking boring. ;D
Wow. I'm shocked at how people are catagorizing teens based upon age...
I'm 17 going on 18 and I in no way shape or form act the way some of you guys are implying teens (specificlly HSers) act. I am very mature and never come to an event without the proper amount of money. Also, I'm not the kind of person who gets on rowdy, I'm extremely civil and very considerate, and I handle and present myself accordingly.
I believe this is a case of AGEISM!! You big meanys! :'( :-[ :P
no offensive but im sure that a LARGE number of minors (HS'ers or not) including full grown adults (whatever that means) have and will have a tendancy to goof off, screw the bill or just down right get them selfs kicks out of a "nice" eating establishment.
Hell, I barely act my age, and what im almost like 90. :P [give or take have many lives ive squnadered]

I second this.
Now, I could understand if you wanted to make it age 21+ for drinking purposes, but to claim that minors are primarily the source of such... My goodness! I'm almost... Offended. D:< ( :P )
this sounds like a lot of fun.
Did you guys decide on a meeting spot?
Possible idea. Thursday dinner (day zero)...something to do other than pick up pre-reg badge and swap meet. Toast off to a kick ass fanime 2009?
(I know a lot of restaurants close, particularly on Sunday...[I'm thinking Japantown])
A lot of people drive/fly Monday morning so that's out of the question.
My question, what kind of dinners are people imagining? Formal/informal? Proper dinner or just really good food? Of course, we're always leaning towards the less expensive meal, should we cap it at $20? Ambiance should be somewhere we can talk and introduce ourselves (dur).
I'm a student at SJSU, but I mainly know fast food eat outs. Anyone with a better idea of SJ nightlife, feel free to steer us way.

I have experience with this, so I'll drop my little nuggets of knowledge:
*If its going to be somewhat formal, keep it as close to the con center as possible; any ladies that are coming along don't like walking a lot, especially when they are wearing heels.
*It is good for each person to generally bring $20 for their share of the bill, since that will probably also cover part of the tip.
*Proper dinner is cool and all, but really good food is also a plus.
*All that crap about talking and junk happens when everyone meets up and on the walk/trip to the eatery.
*If this is to work, you will avoid any and all fast food places near the con center(with the exception of Pizza My Heart)
I'm in as long as it's organized well. Can the lead mail me for details later please when it's finalized?
*bump* for anyone else still interested. If I skip out on Thursday's badge pick up, we can go out for dinner and drink on Friday. This sound good for everyone?
has anyone else noticed that this was marked for 2008?
if anyone is going to want this event to happen, there's need to be someone to bring everyone together.
i'm only saying because i've only read people(from 2009 post) say that they'll join, but no one leading.
I can finally go this year! I'm 21 as of December :P

Yes, I'm aware that this was marked 2008. However, since reply 26, most of us have responded knowing that it was for this year. In any case, I'll step up and lead. I think the best day would be Friday, 'round 7 PM. There's a place called Flames on the Fourth and San Fernando (across from the MLK library). Some of my friends go there to drink occasionally, but I think its a diner as well. It's not too far from Fanime and it'll just be a casual thing.
If this interests you, send me a PM right away. I'll add you to the list. So far, I'm expecting 2-3 of my friends to come along. But a big group should be fun.
P.S, I'm giving up my SFIII:3rd strike tourney for this ><
sorry, as much as i would like to go, i'll be too busy taking pictures.
The reason i posted was to pretty much progress this event, if there was no leader, let alone time or day, then this whole event would fall apart, which is pretty much why i pointed it out.
if anything i would suggest making a new thread that states that this event will take place this year and make a first post that states time, date, and location so people wont have to dig though the thread to find out when
You know I'm always down for the cause. Have we picked a spot yet? I notice these type of gatherings, deciding the place to meet and go is always the difficult part. XD
Let's meet on the first floor, between the two flight of stairs (inside the concourse). 6:30 PM, Friday to go eat/drink @ Flames. I'm just awaiting more replies. The tentative list is:
Me
Preston
narutofan17
Jason (Hatch Guy)
Poisonfish +1 / 2
Elfgirlkaname
Donnathedead
DentyneIce408
Spalding
I'm hesistant to add the people below cause I'm not sure if they're still interested. Send me a PM!
I had to check real quick if I had a gathering at that time but yeah I think that sounds cool. Anyone else?
I would join but... I have a doll-meet at exactly the same time :(
maybe if we could have it a little earlier? I usually like to eat dinner at 6 ^^
Im up for it ;D . Anytime is fine with me.

A friend or two of mine along with myself may be interested in joining as well. I'm not entirely sure if any of them have plans for that time though.
Hey Poisonfish, Elfgirlkaname, & Narutofan17, thanks for replying. Its nice to see some people outside my normal friends group.
What would everyone think if we moved the dinner earlier? Say 6 or 6:30? My stomach will probably be growling sometime before then.
Like my friend said, you gotta eat anyway, why not meet people while you're at it (as long as you're over 21 ;)).

basically, zombies + drinks = good time in my book. sadly, i have class at 6, but just wanted to put it out there.
Haha, sweet.
I like zombies too but only when they're on the screen in movies. Just to clarify things, the Flames is actually located in downtown San Jose. It's walkable distance from Fanime (not sure how successful I'll be walking back ;)).
I'll have to leave at 7:15
I need to get a spot for the swap meet :D
I'm down for going earlier as well.
So is this official? Are we meeting up? ???
It's going dowwwwwwwn!
There are two time issues so might I suggest we meet up at 6:30 PM on the first floor in b/n the two stairs. We'll leave promptly after. Look for a group of people and an Asian guy wearing a bunch of Fanime badges.

Good thing its not Friday yet. The time will be worked around and finalized on Thursday.
Here's a list of specifics:
1. Narutofan's meet @ 6:00 - whenever
2. elfgirlkaname needs to leave @ 7:15
3. donnathedead's class doesn't end till 6PM
How early is too early for dinner? >< I'm willing to flexible, but look at the above. heheh

My friend and I will definitely go. Where is Flames at?
Hopefully we can come up with a time that works for everyone T_T
Sounds like fun I'll be there. :D
Hey peeps, this is the post you've been waiting for. Below is all the info you need:
Time: Friday, 6:30 (leave by 6:45 PM)
Meet: Inside the concourse, 1st floor between the two stairs
Place: Flames (4th & San Fernando...in case you want to meet us there)
I did my best to select a time where everyone could potentially make it. However, if you had already scheduled plans months ahead, please don't feel obligated. I walked back from the Con w/ my prereg badge today and it was about 10 mins to the destination. With that being said, I hope to see as many of you as possible. It's not too late to be added to the list!

Thx again to everyone who made it. It was a really nice way to start off the Con! Too bad I didn't run into any of you again during the following days. Keep in Touch!
Aye, but a fine dinner we had. It was nice meeting with you all, though I feel a bit bad for my poor friends in the ronery corner.
That was an awesome dinner gathering. Definitely nice to meet new people and hope we can do this again next year.
are we doing another dinner/gathering this year? :)
i think this thread was from 2009-
i dunno if the same ppl are planning to have a 2010 dinner get together or you may want to start/organize your own.
just remember from reading this post to find a suitable place and that everyone pays their fair share.
I'm 22 and would love to come. :3
