Rovers ftw.

It's a super fun job... if I'm not in Japan, I'm doing it again.

+The staff members, especially those at Con-Ops and the Rovers were excellent this year. All of those who I spoke to were courtious and well informed. They dealt with line situations superbly. (Yaoi-Bingo line anyone? X_x yay for sick attendees.) And I'd like to thank the staff members of the console gaming who helped me by testing a used game I purchased from the dealers room which I ended up having to return do to it not running correctly.
Ahahha. I'm glad you liked the staff, I was one of the rovers working the yaoi bingo line... thanks for being part of a fun line. ^^

Oh dear. Glomping was such an issue, as were the people with the "glomp me" signs. Unfortunately, there's only so much we can do as staff.

We had only about 30 rovers this year, I believe, and most of us worked 70+ hours (Meaning that there was one of us for about every 350 guests, give or take), however, that's not nearly enough of us to be where we needed to be at all times, and a lot of stuff we took care of after a con-goer informed us that it was a problem... we simply could not be everywhere. So yes, taking down their badge numbers is the best way to get them taken care of; we have the badge numbers and we use them to find people and make sure they're not continuing to do the same thing again and again. We really do use them, I promise, and repeat offenders do find themselves escorted off con premises, and some badges do get pulled.

The glomping thing is definitely going to have to be addressed by the staff, and perhaps there will be a rule put in place for next year, I can't really say for sure. A general rule of courtesy obviously isn't enough; asking whether people mind is the best way. But somehow, it will be dealt with.

As far as the sleeping... Wow. Seriously, get a freaking hotel room, go home, etc. It is not our fault that you want to stay 24-hours, but... err... go somewhere else, sleep, BATHE, etc. I don't especially care if you eat so long as you don't turn yourself into one of our medical emergencies... though I'd reccommend it, the body doesn't function well without eating.

I'm sorry to anyone who got woken up badly, and yes, we do have a strong presence at night, and we do check the video rooms. It's something that's necessary. As Trooper said earlier, it's something that we'll be discussing for next year.

Midnight Snack Parties... Are peachy, if they could just please in the future be taken to a hotel room or off convention property to where it is not our problem. The PB&J wouldn't have even been nearly as bad if they'd bothered to clean up after themselves, but we still have rules about what we can and can't allow...

Cosplay... I had some issues in that I didn't have my camera with me a lot of the time when I saw good cosplays... and then there were some where I was like ... *blink, blink* who are you?? But still, yes... good job. I'd like to see fewer half-arsed naruto outfits where people just grabbed a headband and called it cosplay. ><;

General Behavior... For the most part, as a rover, the people I encountered were as nice to me as I was to them... but there were problem people, and some issues that couldn't be addressed, etc. Remember guys, the behavior of our congoers determines whether we can continue to work with SJCC... if we make them too mad at us, we won't get the spot again, it's that simple. So try to play nice, and clean, and when there are issues, let the staff know; we can't fix things that we don't know are broken.

Okay, now that I'm done responding... (this is the post of doom already, can't you tell?)
+ Dealer's hall layout was far superior and had a lot more space than it has in past years.
+ Artist's alley was also well laid out.
+ Many, many people bothered to get their items peacebonded. Thank you to all of you who did.
- Program guide; I love looking at them and it was a bummer. But I've seen all the reasons... I hope that printing company is either offering a huge discount for next year or this year or something. *le grumble*
- Event overlap; deadly. It's hard enough as a congoer, even harder when you're a rover.
+ Events; I liked the variety.
+/- Maid Cafe; Location. I didn't go, so I'm just going to say that the location should be changed if it returns next year... that room downstairs from where it was would have been much better... also, decorations. But, as I said, I didn't go, so I don't know what it was really like. I do, however, like that it was something new and different... with some work it could be an awesome event.
+/- Food; I liked that there were food vendors. I disliked their prices (Seriously? They wanted that much?!), and it'd be nice if they could perhaps offer better deals...
- Video Rooms; Some of them were labelled badly, some of them had technical difficulties, etc. As a whole they were alright, but maybe attatching whiteboards where video staff can update statuses outside would be good...
+ Yaoi-Con Events; I liked the lines... XD that's a lame thing, isn't it? But thank you to all of you who were in the line that were nice. (I worked the Yaoi-Bingo, and yeah). It sucked when that girl got sick, but I'm glad she was ultimately alright.
- Hentai Rooms; I wanted funny, not scarring. O_O;;;; Sushi is ruined... Seriously. I'd like to see *funnier* hentai, not awkward, gross, and fetish-filled.
- Dealer's Hall; I'm going to support the opinion that it should be more anime-related. We're not all goths, and goth-gear is more than a little out of place. I'd love to see more variety in merchandise, though I realize there's only so much the con can do...
- Fanime Booth; The booth in the dealer's hall for fanime was... err... lame? C'mon guys, do something fun in there! Seriously. Don't just do a huge cuddle pile... that was awkward.
---- Registration Line; Wow. Good Lord. I did line control on Saturday and it was insane. Then I had people yell at me for things that I'm not in control of... harsh. Please, please, please Pre-Reg!! ><;

And... umm... yeah. Now, I'm good.

Ideas and Suggestions / Lockers, or holding area
June 07, 2007, 11:19:12 AM
It's a liability issue, actually.

We agree to watch something for you, it gets lost/stolen/damaged... suddenly it's on our heads.

I do think it would be an excellent idea to have a safe place though... perhaps there are external companies out there that can be contacted to come in with lockers and some such... I couldn't tell you for sure...

I will say that I think it is an issue that needs to be addressed; there were a lot of people who came through the rovers base for peacebonding that couldn't have their weapons peacebound because they weren't in costume... it's tough, really.

But yes, storage would be good. I'd advise just getting a room though... it is worth it to be able to relax in the middle of the day, or crash when you're tired without having to travel all the way home and so on. It's a bit more expensive, but if you think of parking and travel costs... it's not bad. ;)

I can tell you guys that it is something that many of the rovers tried to address while we were working.

Trouble is, a lot of people are stubborn and refuse to believe that not everyone wants to be glomped, and of course, they couldn't possibly be hurting anyone or their costumes, so why should they bother asking?

I think the big thing is that the glompers needed to get consent. Majorly needed to get consent. And not sit in the middle of the walkways in huge circles. If everyone in that circle is okay with it, then it's peachy, but they're still blocking walkways... even at four in the morning.

So... perhaps a better policy is the one that was proposed "You can glomp me... but I get to punch you... if you don't ask my permission first." ;)
Kidding! But seriously, that would be satisfying. "You wrecked my costume, b----!! Eat fist!"

Actually, the only real suggestion I'd have to make on the reg line that could be used next year is...

Umm... have a couple more tables outside where people can write their info, rather than in that one spot during the last five minutes... it's bad to expect legibility when people are using each other as writing surfaces.

I'd love to see the line move faster as a whole, but there's only so much that can be done... it would help if there was a way to pre-reg for a single-day pass online... so that way more people who know they're only going to be there for a single day can just go to the pre-reg line... or something...

It's hard to say, I didn't work reg, I just did line control, which wasn't fun.

Quote from: "E-Chan"I know there were signs, but I saw no sign of schedules. And by that I mean a sheet (or five) of paper that said "Friday ...
Saturday ...
... etc."

We had these at all the Asian Film Rooms. Did you check the Asian Film Rooms? We always have schedules posted up, complete with summaries, running time, and pictures.
Probably I'm either just going blind or my sleep deprived brain didn't register their existance. Either way, that's the best (organizational) detail of the film rooms.

And as far as the crotch-kicking goes... wow. He wanted to?

your friend's a stinky con-goer?
Not stinky. *shakes head* I'd make them shower.

On the Video Rooms and Scheduling again. At '05 Fanime there were schedules on the video room posters. They told you what would be played in that room and that room only. I found those more useful than the booklet because it had times and a brief synopsis. I didn't notice that this year. Was I just blind?.

the signs and schedules were there. unless people stole the posted schedule AGAIN!
 i hate it when people try to rip the schedules from the poster boards, when they can just look at it or even get their own from the info booth.

Quote from: "KitsuneOniko"My one lil other complaint about the con this year was the wait for our staff badges o.O It got pushed back like 2-3 hours XP Does any other staff member know what happened? ^^; Other than that I rather enjoyed the con during my shor breaks that I could get off from Stage Zero XD Met lots of cute girls too this year ^_^ So teh Oni is supremely happy!
I believe there were issues with the binders-- if you actually ended up getting your badge you know the one to which I am referring-- I think the person with them was first late, and then there were some unforseen confusions?

I don't know. But the staff badge line really made me mad with how stupidly it was laid out. However, I'm going to take that complaint elsewhere.

Quote from: "E-Chan"And Fanime attempts to be a family con. No offense meant, but if we show loli yuri then it's going to freak out a lot of parents and we run the risk of scaring off much of our younger fan base.

While I'm for having Yuri at Fanimecon, I agree with you on that - s'obvious not everything is okay for the general public/younger audiences.  That's why I think that if/when Yuri is "introduced", it should be in a reasonable amount at first, rather than pummeling the masses with it.  :P
I'm not against Yuri itself-- we have Hentai and Yaoi rooms, it'd be hypocritical to say no to Yuri just for being adult. I was objecting more to the Loli portion.

I remember seeing you in the Art room Monday afternoon as we were clearing out artists. However, I had no camera.

Good luck though. ^^

Quote from: "Nina Star 9"the marriot stairs at midnight are creepy for a 15-year-old girl to be on, alone, all the way up to the 14th floor... >.<
umm... tha tis about it. XD

My suggestion for you next year is stop by ConOps or Rovers and ask for an escort up the stairs.  Personally, I would have done it, except I'm too old, too fat, too balding and too blind to be walking up 14 flights of stairs.
Yeah, that'd be the kind of thing where we'd advise you to either
1. Take the Elevator, not the stairs, crowded or no.
2. Stop by Rover base and request an escort
3. Grab a friend and make them go with you.

Quote from: "Blue-Six"There's Yaoi, and then there's...Yaoi?
This was my #1 gripe all con-long (and still is now).  Yaoi.  Yes, it's popular - understatement of the year - but for the love of all that is chibi, remember that there is this other genre called Yuri.   I could lay on the floor in the Dealer's Room, spin myself in a circle, and still be facing a vendor that had Yaoi, but I would have to hunt (and I did) to find anything Yuri.  Even some of the vendors were disappointed that there wasn't any - and this isn't just the DL; there wasn't really any viewing rooms or the like for it.  I personally would be happy to get something up and running for the next Fanimecon, and even if I couldn't, it would be worth a shot.
I third this. Yuri probably holds a larger fan base anyways.
Hmmm..if Yuri is allowed i wonder if loli will ever get a part in Fanime Con.
Then again there is always Yuricon (w/ lolicon for that).
I've just got to say, in response to this point. I don't object to Yuri, I know a lot of people really like it, but the reason we have Yaoi is because the Yaoi-Con ladies come down and the fangirls (and fanboys) are insane... essentially, the fans make the market.

(I'm not sure where you actually stand on the "Loli" bit, but I'm throwing my two cents toward that comment as well.)

And Fanime attempts to be a family con. No offense meant, but if we show loli yuri then it's going to freak out a lot of parents and we run the risk of scaring off much of our younger fan base.

Essentially, what I'm saying... is that I know we may already have a Loli fan base at Fanime, but having Loli Yuri could easily encourage them to act out a bit. And honestly, I don't like the idea of some of the Loli fans being around the younger children we can get at con. (Yes, I am aware that liking that particular genre does not automatically make you a child molester or anything of the sort, but I think that is a valid concern nonetheless).

That's all I really wanted to say about that.

STUPID THING GETTING RID OF ME! ... I keep typing these things and then timing out. *grumble* Anyhow, what I was trying to say (only now in short-and-sweet-form) was...

Dealers Room-- Though containing more variety, the Dealer Room felt like it was a lot of clone-booths. There were many old favorites that I was glad to see, and some new ones, though it seemed like a lot of the booths were carrying the same merchandise. If there is anything we can do to ensure a bit more variety while keeping the old favorites, I'd love to see something done.

Artist Alley-- No, no. I really liked that it was in the room. I think it could have been better laid out-- perhaps a big ol' ring of tables that people can walk a loop through or something. Dunno. But there need to be more signs.

My final gripe for the day is SIGNS!! Not just outside the doors to places, because once people have found it they've found it, but actual signs pointing down hallways explaining what's back there. "Down this hallway, Video Rooms 1-5" or "Down here Logistics, Con Ops, Rovers, Elevators" things like that would be very, very useful. Because it's not just a matter of finding the room itself, but establishing that you are in fact in the right hallway.

Aside from that, I have no complaints. I really enjoyed the con, during both on and off duty times. ^_^

Alright, so I was a Rover and I was doing Desk, I'm sure a lot of people saw me... I apologize in advance to anyone that I may have been short with, I tried to be nice, but I worked 8-14 hours every day and so sometimes I was hardly aware of what was coming out of my mouth.

Anyhow, I didn't get out much, but what I did see, I had comments about.
• Stage Zero
Absolutely brilliant! I'm glad we had the entertainment out on the concourse, I just wish there had been more late-night filler for when nothing else was open. It couldn't have been too incredibly hard to have set up the system so there would be like... filler amv's all night-- the best of past years, perhaps... but for a first year program, it was good. (I'd love to see it back with some improvements for next year).

However, I was a Rover (as I said) and I know people repeatedly had to go out there to do crowd control because of fans getting too crowded and blocking walkways. Because of this I'd love to see more space for crowds next time.

    • Asian Films
I saw that there was a particular form, but I just have a couple comments since I only poked my head in for one or two movies the whole weekend. I liked the choices, but some of them would have been better switched to different times. I do understand that you can't please everyone all the time, so I think it was fairly well done. I don't especially like Old Boy, but I know that a lot of people like it. (Enough to play it two years in a row though?)

      • Peace-Bonding
It should have been placed more places-- a location in the Dealer's Hall and maybe on the Concourse would be nice. (I know we were terribly understaffed, however more people with peacebonding training could have done more). I know a lot of people who normally would get bonded couldn't find the Rover office. *sigh*[/list:o]

I can't think of anything else right now.

Quote from: "Shinigami"Yay! You're home too.

I think that with 8 3-hour shifts, it would be easier for staff members to be able to do what they wish to do around the con without missing it, falling asleep, or sleeping on the job. But that might be kind of annoying though to have to keep track of the time 24/7 to make sure you don't have to work soon.
Well, I worked Rovers, so they rotated us a lot, but I do agree, it'd be nice to rotate in and out more frequently so we could make it to more events. However, I kinda liked the fact that I was off for long blocks of time to get in some decent sleep.

Quote from: "hellangel"CLAMP?? please??? I know they're going to AX, but can we have them at Fanime, too??
Go to AX, strategically cover them and surround them with fanime advertisements. pray they come. XD

I'd like to see more guests in general, but specifically, the people I'd truly love to see are all well beyond our current reach.

Ideas and Suggestions / Badges falling >_<
May 29, 2006, 11:50:51 PM
Quote from: "Daitenshi"
Quote from: "Lisu"Yea, those early reg badges were impervious to falling.

Yeah, about that...  My badge came unclipped from my belt as I was taking my luggage downstairs at the Hilton this morning.  I looked everywhere and retraced my steps, but all to no avail.  It's not fun losing a staff badge on the last day of the con...  T_T
No, it's not. Nearly as not-fun as getting them on the first day. T_T;

I nearly lost mine.
