I just finished watching the first episode of the series.
HILARIOUS. I've been waiting for a series like this for a long time, so glad I've found something to please my tastes a bit. This episode was so cheesy it's great, and the ED is just addictive.

Did anyone notice the very Final Fantasy 8-like music running at about 5 minutes into episode 2? Cool. I'm in.
I saw episode 2 and this is getting better. I love Haruhi since she's so out there and basically does thing on a whim. The guy character, Kyon is funny as hell with his voice over narration and sarcastic wit. This has become one of my favs of the new season. :D

How about we gather up our own SOS dan and perform the infamous "Hare Hare Yukai" ED theme song dance on Stage Zero? I know - it's been done and repeated on YouTube, but never in a whole, complete group! All we need are at least 5 people [max. 8 - including the other 2 guys and girl], preferably 2 guys, 3 girls. If there's a girl needed, I practically memorized the dance. ^^; We can show the original ED animation sequence behind us, too [assuming they have projectors].

I just watched episode 9, and... I don't get it. It's supposedly episode 14, which according to what I've heard will be the last episode (Kyoto might've planned to make the show longer, but needs staff to do a remake of Kanon), and it's like... neither a good ending, nor a hilarious episode, or anything! I mean, there are some good lines and stuff, but overall... the episode is way too mellow... It's like... something's wrong here, but I don't know what...
EDIT: Also, sales of the novels and the ending theme CD on Amazon have apparently been straight-up spectacular. If the show really is that much of a moneymaker, I wonder if Kyoto Animation will extend it, or make a sequel.

yea it's a little slow, but to me this show has never been about gut-busting comedy
anyway, this episode gives the biggest hint of haruhi's feelings so far
I'm guessing the last episode of the anime will be the last episode of the melancholy book (1st book), which has a more...action-oriented climax. Perhaps the 14 episode length + this episode is the reason why they made it non-linear, so it ends with a bang :)

This is disappointing...:(
Episode 12 is the awesome. My two favorites in an amazing performance. I gotta say, this is probably the best animated episode yet. And that's saying a lot considering the consistently high production on the show.

I DLed the maxi CD that the two songs ["God knows..." and "lost my music", as well as "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu" -full version-] a day before the a.f.k. release, so I was even more estatic to hear them animate this song being performed. Oh if only more anime companies can do that~ KyoAni FTW. ;o [they're performance animation seemed really on par and accurate to an actual performance. Just marvelous]

Upon (several) repeated viewings, I paid more attention to the actual instrument playing. It appears that they must have used extensive reference footage or something because, while I don't play any instruments, the hand movements basically appear "correct" to me. Just astonishing really; especially for a TV series.

All the more reason for Kyoto Animation to continue the series or make a second season. At this rate, it seems they'll have to, and it's not like there's not novel material to back it up. Maybe there'll be a break in between for Kannon, but Haruhi stuff (CDs, novels, etc.) everywhere has been selling like crazy, so it would be absurd not to continue it.

i feel that. As much I think this show is overrated (yea i said it), its a damn good series for what it delivers, and its always a huge bummer when great series come to an end. On a side note, I'm more bummed that mushishi ended. :(

ahhh~ well, i'll still say mushishi isn't for everyone, if you're not feeling the concept and it's world, you'll never be drawn into it. Seriously bothering me that there are only two episodes left. I'm kind of wondering how they're going to pull it together and have a good conclusion in those episodes, with the chronological restructuring thing. Seems difficult, but possible.
Also, there had better be a second season. I mean, sales say it's common sense, there's more novel material to back it up, and this is probably the biggest thing Kyoto Animation has ever made, so...

wow, she's freaking awesome starting with episode four -- where she pulls off the 'homing mode' crap on the bat. XD Episode 10 then totally confirmed my belief, and Episode 11 had the "I TOLD YOU SO. SHE FREAKING ROCKS." moment, where she...ya know.
I was *THIS* close to standing up during the end credits of Haruhi at Fanime and doing the Haruhi dance.
I still did it in my chair.

Also I gotta say episode 13, kinda a letdown especially after the complete awesomeness that was episode 12!

Unbreaking a broken fighting game requires extensive play and feedback from competitive-level players. Kinda hard to do it on such a small scale. You'd end up with something like MvC2. Also, considering the highly customizable nature of MUGEN, it demands constant tweaking.
I think I'm gonna stick to my KoFXI and Tenka. =P

Back on the topic of Haruhi, I showed the episode 10 fight scene to my friend (who I insisted should see the series for its insanely excellent animation) at the party I attended today. This ended up attracting a whole bunch of other people who, upon seeing Yuki's asskicking (and the band snippet from ep 12), demanded that they burn copies for them, too.
That's it -- I'm creating a SOS-dan sect within Music Game Club.
A bump, seeing as this thread is slowly sinking and I've just watched episode 14. Here are my thoughts:
- Kyon's sister = win
- 'mikuru' folder = win
- Haruhi angst = whoa
- More Kyon's sister = win
- Mysterious stuff = win
- Climax = win
- Yuki's little "HEY LET'S GO TO THE LIBRARY AGAIN :DDDD" message = win

- The mix of Kyon's and Haruhi's feelings = interesting
- Kyon's feelings in particular = interesting
- Haruhi's near-realization of her dream = interesting, a bit scary

BTW, an interesting note, a friend told me that the series feels a little different, and the "ending" episode makes a little more (less?) sense if you rewatch the series chronologically. I haven't done it yet but I probably will soon - the series was too good and too short not to.

So like many of the other Fanimerconers on this forum... I too have been in a Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya craze. And also like everyone else.. I love episode 12. Yuki Nagato rocks.
Since a lot of people wanted to learn the dance,
I decided to do something a little different and learn her intro/solo guitar part for God Knows and uh.. I'm pretty much done with it. I think I might post it online or something. But i need to record it somehow.
Anyway.. I'm rewatching the series now.. but in chronological order. You should do it toooooooooooooooooo!

Great series. Funny, yet intelligent, it's definitely a series which, if possible, would do well to continue. Although the end of the current series is rather conlcusive, if the creator ever decided to, y'know, revive it... no objections from the peanut gallery.

I'd have to say that the figure I'd like to see most, though, is the Tsuruya maid. Yuki is awesome, but I don't think she has a knockout costume that would work on a figure. I was never a fan of figures anyway.

j/k, I voted #1, though people are right that #3 seems to have the "mechanical" tone down better; I just don't think Yuki should be completely stoic all the time.
Thing is, neither of these is really adequate in demonstrating the voice actor's capability with truly difficult lines. That's where the difference should become apparent.
well as much as all of them are not on par, it comes down to probably 1 or 3. (meaning i agree to chun and mduo in their own way). I can feel more emotions from number 1 but 3 is far more "mechanical". It's hard to come to a conclusion because we all like Yuki for different reasons. After some thought, I guess I have to go with accuracy, and I pick number 3.

Went with #1. I would have gone with #5, but I think his voice was too deep, and he pronounced Haruhi not as well as #1. Itsuki's voice is sort of hard to make a vote for, though.

#5: Suave, yes, but too suave. Like, "My name's Bond - James Bond" suave. Also, the voice's quite deep. Just because Crispin Freeman is voicing doesn't mean it's automatically the bes--::dies under fangirl attack::
I personally would've had the seiyuu try to enunciate Itsuki's 'closed circle' lecture, but that'd be a bit spoileriffic, huh?
Yeah, the Itsuki voices are all bad. None of them have that improbably-jovial tone that makes him perfect.

#2 is, indeed, a surfer voice.
#3 is almost good but he's a touch patronizing or something.

#5 is too deep but at least he gets the sort of midsentence chuckles right. His voice pains me though.
In the end, #1 is the least painful but that's not saying much. So bad.

I've not watched many dubs in my time, but it looks like they've picked a pretty good cast. Fair is fair.
What I'M concerned about is how they'll handle the OP and ED. Are they going to keep the original Japanese versions, or will they try to re-vocalize them with the new cast?
My hope goes for the former. The songs are (still!) hits in Japan, and have enough influence over here. Changing them would be trying to fix an unbroken machine.

Unless it's Funimation*, I think you need not worry.
(*Didn't Funimation dub over some songs? I know Fruits Basket, for one, had a dubbed OP on the dub track, but I can't remember anything else...)
It's pretty common practice to keep Japanese-language OP/EDs in direct-to-video anime releases in America. I can't vouch much for exceptions cause I never watch dub tracks. Well, except for one: You-Gen-Kai-Sya actually had a good re-dubbing for the OP & ED.

The Special Editions were the only way TV Broadcast Order could be released in North America as an "extra". It was pretty tough to get that approved as even Japan doesn't have TV Broadcast Order on DVDs.
So that is why you're seeing Broadcast Order on the special editions instead of regular, because it is an obligation (not a choice) to put Japanese DVD order on regular version.

That would be probably the most reasonable assumption considering the release conditions, but one has to wonder because of the amount of originally JP onry stuff they want to shove at us in these releases.

Not outside of doujin releases as far as I know. But looking at the other swag available in the LE releases, I wouldn't be surprised if they make original JP-like merchandise for the US release. For example, I'm pretty sure those shitajiki won't all be original JP releases. The one pictured in the image with the first LE box looks like a furoku item from a magazine (I forget which one. Probably Animage or Animedia), but with some alteration.

I read about this anime and it got good reviews....but the whole anime wasn't very interesting to me. It was like someone using a cheap video camera to document some cosplay show or something....done with modern anime graphics. I was totally turned off by it. >.<

I'm sorry, but from reading the two entries, it seems like you completely missed the fact that the first episode was for the entire 'movie' constantly making fun of itself?
No, its not all like that, the ending shows you that the cast were watching it, following episodes play like a real time show. But it also seems like it will need to be explained that the episodes, for its own charm, are not in chronological order.
Just a rule of thumb though, you really can't judge any show with just the first episode.
I dunno. I loved EVA AND GW on their first episodes. Same with Great Teacher Onizuka and several others. ^^;

Akihabara is actually blocked off so that no traffic can go through daily. Quick I need help! I was at the video store yesterday and on a whim picked up the first DVD. I just finished watching it. Yes AWESOME.
OK, two questions and the first is the most important one. What order should I watch the episodes in? The broadcast order or the chronological order as released in the Japanese DVD version.
The American release also follows the Japanese DVD release and shows the episodes in chronological order. I have read that the broadcast order preserves the quirkiness of the series, but the chronological order makes more sense.
So what are your guy's opinions on this? I have of course watched the first disk (chronological order) and I am downloading the series as we speak. I need to make the choice before I watch the rest.
As for question number two, what did people think of the English dub? I enjoyed it alot, but I haven't watched it in Japanese yet.

2) I personally think that the dub isn't half-bad.
According to the discussion at the Bandai panel, the limited edition releases from volume 2 on will have two discs: one with episodes in chronological order, and one in broadcast order (standard releases will have just chronological order). However, the broadcast order discs will be a tad off because both versions of volume one just had the chronological order, affecting one of the episodes involved.
Bit of an update, but it looks like that the bonus discs on volumes 2-4 of the limited editions will have the whole series spread between the three discs, in proper broadcast order, so the issue of volume one is moot.

Wow. I think I nearly peed myself of joy, I almost did. What a relief that official coverage of the concept, rumor or not, is coming to the surface!
Consider that, even if it IS just speculation, "big-name" media coverage of the idea is only more influence towards the idea. It's much like when a crowd starts cheering for a band that MIGHT come onto the stage (say, "if there was enough time"), if the draw for them to come up is big enough, they'll at least be more tempted to give them what they want. Even if that's sort of a dumb theory, it's how I figure this could all turn out.

Man, Taniguchi is developing the best fandom in the entire show. Though Tsuruya has had her fair share of attention, too.

If I remember correctly it was announced somewhere on Anime News Network that there WILL be a second season. I just don't remember when that was when the article was put up (it was after AX is all I remember). :( Gomen.

Kyon's (Tomokazu Sugita), Itsuki's (Ono Daisuke), and Yuki's (Chihara Minori), along with some of Haruhi's (Hirano Aya) songs were played well.
The Kyon and Itsuki, as well as Yuki performances are phenomenal. Hirano-san got a bit too high/low in some areas, and I'm not going to lie here; Yuko Goto tried too hard; it sounded like some bad Karaoke.
This might be a DVD I will purchase. Maybe I'll wait until that one booth at Fanime next year stocks it instead of that UNDER17 DVD all day.
