General Convention Discussion / Re: Yoshiki
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:45:53 PM »
Hi everyone!

As someone intimately involved in the planning and execution of this event, I would ask everyone to have some consideration - for both the staff and for Yoshiki - for how things happened.

It might help to view this from Yoshiki's perspective. I am not claiming to speak on his behalf, but here's what I could ascertain...

First, he was ill all week. There was a chance that he wasn't going to be able to come. We didn't get official confirmation until the early afternoon on Saturday. In fact, we were expecting only his assistant to come! But just as his assistant was about to board a plane in his stead, Yoshiki made the decision to come. He really wanted to meet the people at FanimeCon - even despite being sick. All of us staff were touched at his character.

Second, the plane was delayed, which didn't help things. Luckily, the flight and drive to the convention center was smooth. It did take him some extra time to get composed and ready for his appearance, but that's typical when you just come off of an airplane.

Third, with his injured hand, it became apparent he wouldn't be able to do many signings. We had to make up a system with very limited time, and that was the best we came up with. I'm sorry it worked poorly, but we had to do something to limit how many autographs Yoshiki would have to do.

Why did he stay? It seemed that the panel gave Yoshiki a lot of energy. We were ready to get him back on a plane home, and booked a limo to SJC. In fact, I left the panel midway to start walking over to the Civic to wish Yuya and FLOW good luck at MusicFest. But as we were greeting Yuya, we got called back - Yoshiki was feeling really good about everything and took us up on an offer to go to dinner! Now, you don't deny Yoshiki wanting to hang out - so we booked out of there to meet him.

Yoshiki was very excited by the fans, and he immediately began chatting with his assistant about tweeting different things - eventually talking about wanting to cause "a riot" at Stage Zero. (Yoshiki is a bit mischievous, it seems  ;D) Eventually his assistant left to go pick winners, and brought back two girls. Yoshiki was quite kind - took pictures with them and such, and bought them dinner.

Yoshiki was having so much fun that he actually missed his first plane. We realized he might actually want to stay the night, and so booked a hotel room for him while he was at dinner. But eventually his assistant insisted he had to go catch the next plane. We got a new driver - now headed to SFO instead of SJC - to make it happen. Just like that, he was off.

It suffices to say that it was quite the whirlwind appearance. We tried to handle things as best as we could. I know that both FanimeCon and Yoshiki himself wished that more could be done, but it was a very spur-of-the-moment thing for all of us, and we managed the best we could.

I hope this helps to explain all that went on that day. Hopefully he can come back again - we would certainly love to have him (and make more mischief!) :)

Things in the Universe / Weird day.
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:31:07 PM »
Yeah, the forums aren't my livejournal, but... what a weird day.

First, today is supposed to be the end of the world. Didn't believe it, but I felt off all day.

Second, making preparations to announce the new chair. That's just weird, because I've been breathing Fanime for three years, but now it's time to step back. Totally relieved to have a replacement, though!

Third, confirming Yoshiki. Him coming is one of those good problems to have, and I'm just amazed anyone at that level even knows who we are. Given all the circumstances surrounding his stop, I'm just amazed and honored.

Fourth, mid-way through the meeting... Vic Mignogna shows up. Like, what? We wanted to bring him this year, but he had schedule conflicts. But there he is, saying hi to everyone, wishing us luck. What a nice guy! And he, like, ate a cookie that my wife and I baked!

All kinds of random events in between.

FanimeCon is just plain surreal sometimes.

General Convention Discussion / Yoshiki
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:09:23 PM »
Hi all, just want to get this out there while it's hot:

Yoshiki of X Japan will be stopping by FanimeCon on Saturday evening in support of the Yoshiki Foundation. He will be hosting a panel and autograph session.

Further details coming up soon. This happened quite spontaneously, so we're still hashing out the details - but we are thrilled to have him stop by.

I hope you are as excited as I am. Let's show him some Fanime spirit!

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Guests I Want for Fanimecon 2012!!!!!!!
« on: May 20, 2011, 01:43:25 PM »
Hi all,

I hate to be a downer, but - we're not even done with 2011! ^_^;

Unfortunately I won't be of much help here, since I'm stepping down this year, but I'll make sure to pass the word to the next Chair. In the meantime, you can always get in touch with the GR department, and they may be able to make things happen. They will be closely monitoring this and other threads throughout the year!

Bring Yoshiki!
Yoshiki at FanimeCon. Really, Ashley? :P Yes, by all means, give him a shout out.

General Convention Discussion / Re: Schedule/Program?
« on: May 17, 2011, 01:51:53 PM »
Is there a resource and if so, could someone point me to it, with just a general schedule for ALL events at the con?  I'm bringing my disabled son and his girlfriend and need more info about hours that the con opens, floorplan of the convention center, what time all events occur, etc.  Can only find listings of events by category, and even then, am not seeing specific times for events.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The schedule will be posted online shortly, as ewu pointed out. That will contain all the different tracks of programming, the events within, and their times. Updates will be publicized throughout the convention at Info Booths.

The more general information is contained in the program guide. Generally speaking, the convention is somewhat open on Thursday evening, fully opens Friday morning, and doesn't close down until Monday afternoon. Check out sanjose.org for a floorplan and for more info about the surrounding area.

Hope that helps! :)

I know this isn't really budget related, but it could be a good convention idea in general. I'm thinking of investing in a few of the space saver travel bags. You know the one's that you roll up to get all the air out of?

I think it could really help me fit everything into one bag instead of two and save room when my friends and I carpool over to the con.

Anyone else ever try this?
Those work really well! Just know that they make your luggage pretty dense and heavy. (It's an important point if you're flying or don't have rolling luggage.)

General Convention Discussion / Re: Guest anouncement
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:01:29 PM »
Yes, please wait. ;D We are scrambling to get the guests announced in a proper fashion.

Unfortunately, the disaster in Japan did not help things... and probably not in ways you'd expect. To make things worse, gas prices are hurting us tremendously. But the Guest Relations team has been working very hard and have some great guests in the lineup. I hope you like them!

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Niconico Live Stream
« on: April 23, 2011, 08:06:40 PM »
So the English beta for Nico Nico Douga is live streaming from Sakura-Con this weekend.
Do you think the same can happen at FanimeCon?
Outcome doesn't look good. :(
What's the problem?
Broadcasting/streaming/recording in our facilities is very complicated subject (which I'd rather not go into detail about here ^_^;) but it suffices to say that it's very expensive.

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Raise Money for Japan
« on: March 11, 2011, 10:46:07 AM »
This is why I love our members!

I'm discussing ideas with staff right now.

In honor of my final year as chair, I'm told we will play a nonstop Rick Astley / Nami Tamaki mashup.

Well, at least two people on this thread might be happy.

Happy Things in the Happy Universe / Re: Why you DO go to Fanime!

To pimp out under-aged girls for the profit of Fanime...

I mean... run the Maid Cafe...

I mean, control under-aged girls.

Yeah I think that one is right.
For the profit of the Convention Center! If it were able to profit Fanime, we'd make the uniforms completely skimpy.

I go because I have a free pass!  ;D

Also, meeting and relaxing with the guests!

But it's fun to watch you kids have fun.

General Convention Discussion / Re: Attendance Numbers????
« on: January 27, 2011, 10:34:07 AM »
It was a bit more, but... releasing the numbers raises issues that we don't feel like dealing with. It can give an incomplete view of the convention as well, which is bad externally and internally. Just take a look at AX vs. Otakon.

It's certainly no snub to the community in general or Patrick specifically. It's just a philosophical thing that's been around for a while in FanimeCon. We're growing quite well - enough so that we can outdo ourselves each year - and that's about all the numbers matter to us.
