To answer the two things that I can answer:

- We have no issues with respectful discourse on experiences with this or any other convention, even if that discussion touches on some things that didn't go so well for some members or in which you'd prefer some changes. (Though, suggestions for changes might receive a broader staff audience if given at the after-con gripe session or sent in via e-mail, etc. directly to staff.)

- Many panelists take advantage of the discount, but not all of them. Some panelists sign up because they love their topic and want to share it with others.

What Firefury said is true. Another factor is your content. We did not have any other FanFic workshop submissions aside from those 3, and it's a topic of interest, and each of the three panels was substantially different from the other two, while still in the same general theme.

I posted new guidelines this year to give people a better idea of what counts the most when we are looking over submissions, and it's now live on the panelist information page as of today. I hope that will help.

It's a valid question. :)

Most panels do center around Anime, video games, japanese culture, cosplay etc. However, if there's enough interest in it, and a panel submission is made that looks like it will be a fun panel that will interest everyone attending, we are willing to branch out.

A couple of other panels we had this year that didn't center around what you'd normally expect to find at an Anime convention:
Cthulu for President (which we've had every year for about 5 years now, and is always very popular)
Two Homestuck panels (which were both very popular and well attended - we often will have webcomic panels that aren't related to anime directly, actually)

In previous years, we've also had panels that related to non-anime things but were things our GoH's were involved in outside of their video game/anime interests, such as panels about Avatar when Reuben Langdon was a guest, or about Burlesque when we had Karen Dyer here.

We like to keep the panels schedule as diverse as possible, so that there's something for everyone.

Actually, we did provide a phone number for panelists to use in the emergency case that they weren't able to make it to the panels lounge in time to check in. Perhaps you missed it in the e-mail about check-ins? We definitely try to provide alternatives for when physically being there isn't possible.

Thanks for asking!

Yes, it's safe to post it for others to see.

The schedule this year was created as panels were selected, and all times locked in at the time of panel selection. It's a big difference from the way we've done it in previous years.

Since this is a frequently asked question, especially due to the large number of panels invited to the waiting list this year (owing to the huge number of submissions this year), we've written up a list of ten things to answer this question.

'How can improve my chances of getting my panel onto Fanime's schedule/getting a better time slot/ etc?'

Ten things you can do to improve your chances:
1. Have a totally awesome panel title that makes us want to schedule your panel, and others want to attend it.
2. Have a fantastic panel description that tells both us and others why people should attend your panel.
3. Give us a detailed overview of how exactly you plan to run your panel and what type of information you're going to cover rather than one or two sentences which only gives a vague idea.
4. Give a panel on a topic that isn't already being discussed by other panels.
5. Give a panel in a category that not many people submit panels for.
6. Give a panel that relates to the current year's Convention Theme. (2012 theme was sports - there were very few submissions relating to the theme.)
7. Submit early, so that when we're looking for a panel to fill that time slot you really want, your panel will be in the database we're looking at.
8. Be flexible with when you're willing to give your panel so that when we're looking for a panel to fill that particular time slot, your panel won't be dismissed because you don't seem willing to go at that time, and someone else is.
9. Repeat panels which have also received high attendance in past years are typically given priority (assuming they submitted early enough, etc.)
10. Be polite. Be respectful. Don't harass us.

"I've read this, but why didn't MY panel get onto the schedule?!"
We suggest you re-read this list. If you are unsure about the popularity of particular topics or categories (ie: how many submissions we get on those topics, or in those categories), feel free to ask us via e-mail or twitter, and we'll give you an idea.

Please note that while all of these things should improve your chances, none of them are a guarantee that your panel will be placed on our schedule. The more of them you adhere to though, the higher your chances are likely to be.

Although no such panel was really submitted this year (to my knowledge), I would like to state again that the panels department would have no issue with hosting such a panel.  :)

It's an idea. However, if we schedule panels that don't expect much of an attendance at that time, chances are.... they won't get much of an attendance. Then, this will make others less likely to be willing to give panels in that time slot in the future. Something in the nature of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The feedback is much appreciated though! We'll consider it. I'm not sure if we'll have the staff to support it this year though. @_@;; I wish we did. It's looking as though there's going to be an unholy number of panels eligible for the waiting list this year.

Just to chime in... though others have already said most of what I could say...

We definitely look to improve the quality of the panels that are given each year. Below are some things to keep in mind.


  • Anytime we approve a panel from a new panelist, it's hit or miss as to how well they perform as a panelist. This does not at all deter us from giving new people a chance to give panels if their topic is good and their submission form seems well thought out.
  • Sometimes, the subject and content are enough to make the panel popular, despite a bit of lack of polish on the part of the presenter. When this is the case, it's certainly possible that the panel will continue to appear on the schedule in future years.
  • As submissions continue to increase, more and more emphasis has been placed on quality - this is, in fact, the reason for our change in the panel approval process, as of last year.
  • We can only approve panels that have been submitted. Really awesome panels submitted late sometimes don't make it onto the schedule, while less awesome panels that were submitted earlier do. We can't wait till the last minute to fill the schedule.
  • We can also only approve panels that are willing to present within the open time slots on the schedule. Sometimes once the schedule fills up, if the 'better' panels have requested time slots that we cannot accomodate, another panel will be offered the time slot that exists.

Hope that helps give some clarity to the process. :)
