Attn: Tapioca Division: I see a flaw in our plan.

Oh my gad, KyoAni has surely learned from the Hare Hare Yukai experience by making another dance.

It's like some KyoAni music game on Another.

Also, in before I BUY SAUSAGE

I like how Miyuki's glasses are the standard "individual-lens-is-as-big-as-your-palm" size.

Also, Tsukasa is MINE. ::hugs::

Character rankings will get posted after the subs hit.

You know... something about Lucky Star was REALLY familiar to me for some reason, and I found the reason why!

Didn't Lucky ☆ Star have a DS game called Lucky ☆ Star Moe Drill and Shin Lucky ☆ Star? Gah... You guys probably know this already. I'm just really stupid. -Turns off DS.-

It took a few play throughs for the song to grow on me.  The dance is cool too, but the speculation that it might be the next Hare Hare Yukai seems a bit overblown to me.

As for characters, Lisu and I were talking about it the other day while looking through the newest batch of anime magazines in our possession.  We both agree that Konata looks really interesting.  Kagami piques my interest too.  Actual rankings will have to wait for an episode release first though.

The girl plays eroge, works at a cosplay cafe, and can't wait to be 18 so she can buy eroge herself.

Does that not scream of win?

The dance is more of random cuteness (not complaining) than an actual routine to spend the time mimicking the choreography for (i.e. hare hare youkai or yogurting...ho ho).
In on the Konata express line here, though Tsukasa interests me slightly (mmm...healer type...)

Who I am most interested in, though, is Akira. Oversized sleeves...ughaaaaa~

I saw opinion to be rather divided, myself, between people who can stand "having nothing happen", people who can't, and people who were insanely disappointed with the hype.

There are people who claim that it's probably going to get better with subs because it seems as though some of the jokes are inherently cultural.

Konota Izumi's description in Wikipedia:

   * Birthday: May 28th
   * Lives in: Saitama Prefecture
   * Blood Type: A
   * Strong subjects: PE (however, it isn't her favorite subject)
   * Disliked subjects: Math and science
   * Favourite Foods: Chocolate cornet bread

Konata, nicknamed "Kona-chan" by her friends, gets bored easily when something doesn't interest her. She can be smart, but she hates studying so her grades are a bit uneasy. However, she is an expert in pulling an "all-nighter". In contrast to her studying habits, she loves video games to the extent that she can compete against Kagami on knowledge of games. In addition to video games, she loves anime which is also due to her father's influence along with the games. Her father also buys ero-games for himself, so she is able to play and enjoy them as well. In fact, when she became 18, Konata was overjoyed since she could now go buy and play ero-games legally.

Since she spends quite a large sum of money into video games and dōjinshi, Konata was lucky enough to get a part-time job at a cosplay cafe. Continuing with her theme of playing video games, Konata plays the role of a male character in an online game and is married in that world. Her significant other in the game is ironically a male gamer using a female character. She often plays online games late into the night hence why she tends to fall asleep in class, which makes her a frequent victim to Nanako's fists.

Her physique is smaller than average when compared to her peers which hasn't changed since she was in sixth grade. Her appearance is as follows: long bluish-purple hair with a large ahoge, sleepy green eyes and a beauty mole under her right eye just like her father. Her mother, sadly, died when she was young, and she has lived alone with her father afterwards. In her third year of grade school, however, Yutaka came to live at her house, so there are now three members living at her home.

- - -

Lol... I hope this doesn't spam you guys, but Izumi's description has been bugging me a lot lately. I hope you guys don't find this totally annoying. ^^; I just... felt like replacing the words because, gee, it feels similar.

Kasumi, nicknamed "Jun-nyan" by her friends, gets bored easily when something doesn't interest her. She can be smart, but she hates studying so her grades are a bit uneasy. However, she is an expert in pulling an "all-nighter". In contrast to her studying habits, she loves video games to the extent that she can compete against Wasabi on knowledge of games. In addition to video games, she loves anime which is also due to her brother's influence along with the games. Her brother also buys ero-games for himself, so she is able to play and enjoy them as well. In fact, when she becomes 18, Kasumi would be overjoyed since she could then go buy and play ero-games legally.

Her physique is smaller than average when compared to her peers which hasn't changed since she was in fourth grade. Her appearance is as follows: black hair with a small ahoge, brown eyes and a beauty mole over her lip just like her mother. Her father, sadly, left the family when she was young, and she has lived alone with her mother afterwards. In her fifth year of grade school, however, Simon came to live at her house, so there are now three members living at her home.

If you have the raw, grab the subs from this release ('tis a softsub - INSTADOWNLOAD!) and ignore the AVI they pack in.

edit ...Wow, the subs need a lot of work. I'll edit it and upload it for direct download.

edit Edited for grammar and some timing problems with the SOS-dan raw: ver0.7 (http://www.chisa-chan.net/wai/lucky.ass) (right click, save as). Rename the file to the raw's file-name and append the .ass extension to it. :3 Or, open it manually in VLC/MPC.

Just finished watching ep1. (raw of course)

EYE EM OH

1. The OP song is pretty ehhh in my book, the melody is rather obnoxious and tries too hard to be original when it doesn't have to. The visuals are entertaining and very very awesome.

2. The plot is indeed fun. I have a huge love for slice-of-life series so girls doing nothing for 23 minutes is entertainment in my book. The feeling to it  is a lot different than the original work imo.

3. Cultural references are pretty important and it may be hard for some people to understand the jokes.

Overall, it felt like it was moe girls crossed with seinfeld, and I want more.

Finished and loved it.
Food conversations= win.  I like Akira as much as I thought I would and even more.

Seems most of us got the hype wrong though....people were expecting another Haruhi, I thought Pani Poni, but it is more of an Azumanga...which is awesome.

Yea this series is quite amazing IF you like this genre. 15 minute conversations about food makes me happy. It was freaky that Konata eats the same way I do. I also have to add that Hirano did a great job voicing Konata, I didn't expect her voice to be this versatile.

I heard from several sources that this will be a 24 episode series? I'm hoping so.

After skimming those anime blogs, my expectations didn't get too high and the show completely surpassed them.

I similarly <3 the nothing.

Konata is indeed my favorite.  Rep that ice cream to the bottom of the cone! XD  And Kagami is, as I expected, great.

Miyuki. Mine.

Rankings will be up later, once I know more about the character.

I was watching the food conversation, and for some reason a flag went up in my head,"Wait, it's still going? Oh, cool - hope it doesn't end for a while" And I like how they switched from food to video games. And as far as how I'd eat those foods mentioned, I haven't had any of those, except for maybe strawberry shortcake. When it comes to my eating style, mine would be Konata x Miyuki. Weird I know. I like silence when the dude speaks. And I absolutely loved the voice change in Akira as soon as she was asked how much she was getting paid. I loved the latter voice much better. And lol @ how Konata made a friend - "This is what happens when you come across an experienced fighter" Oh, and the sleep conversation was awesome too.

If I had the time, I will make SO MANY gifs from that one episode. Weekend, I cannot wait. I almost feel like making the whole anime as .gif (And what if I do? o.O!)

And anyone come across this site: http://www.geocities.jp/with_a_littleluck/luckystar-top.html ??? (I'm sure you guys have, since you guys have been whoring out info on this and stuff :P)

Count the references and external shots!

*Various references to new issues of game magazines/tankobons
* Sgt. Frog in the Crane Game
* Taiko Drum Master! HHY playing (If you didn't catch that, shame on you.)
* Tekken 5 Gameplay: Kona-chan uses alias "KONAKONA" and plays the dark-skinned character in boxer shorts. *notes notes
*Shuffle side poster of Lisianthus
*Probably some old ********* 3 robot show I've not seen in Karaoke.
* Shiraishi: "Wa wa wa wa...." wasuremono? Taniguchi's Seiyuu = Minoru Shiraishi = Minoru Shiraishi character in Lucky Star. Go figure.

Akira is such a Yandere.

Ranking:

1. Konata
2. Kagami
3. Tsukasa

Ep. 3: Tsukasa owns at pony tail.
As for rankings I've never posted:

#1 in absolute ruling:  Akira

#2: Tsukasa
#3: Miyuki
Because I have M.C.I.D.D. (Main Character Interest Deficiency Disorder)
Konata is pretty low at #4....but somehow manages to beat #5 -Kagami

A teacher is fine too.

Ahh, rankings are so hard for this anime, for me. I don't dislike or like any character over the other, now. x.x But Tsukasa in a pony tail is absolute love. >3< Whereas Kagami... well, not so much. But that's okay! Akira's yandere characteristics are really entertaining to watch.

So current rankings are typed with trembling hands.

1. Konata, Akira, Tsukasa, Miyuki
2. ... Kagami?

ANN's blurb on this (http://animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-04-30/lucky-star-changes-director-after-four-episodes).

Apparently it's cause of "performance issues."  All the negative criticism about the show must have added up.  But it's still pretty unusual for a Japanese company to change the series director mid-run.

Personally I've come to love the subtle, nothing-happens nature of the first few episodes.  I get the feeling that the show will become a bit more deliberate in its comedy after the director change and I'm inclined to be disappointed, but I'll keep watching regardless.  I'm sure it'll still be good cause it's not like the source material's any different.
Title: Lucky Star - Uu 19:You can find my people... Everywhere
Post by: LastElixir on April 30, 2007, 04:23:53 PM
It's odd for them to directly state "poor performance" on the official site. Usually they are pretty vague about these kind of things.

Also, I always thought that everything was done production wise prior to airing. I didn't know that they record episodes while they air. I can see this being done for long series like Keroro Gunsou, but series with only 1-2 cools (13-26ep)? I had no idea.

On the good side, ep 4 was freakin epic, so many things I can relate to. This show has became to be one of my all time favorite series, not just this season but an all time favorite, in just 4 episodes. Yeah this series is definately not for the mass audience (especially in foreign countries) but whatever, it's a personal great watch. I hope this change is for the better.

If one sees too much moe in a period of time, that person reaches Moe Overload and must take a rest.

The breaking point is different for each person. The breaking point for you, and most everyone here doesn't exist. The breaking point for me is fairly low. I can only take so much Moe before I can't take any more.

I really don't know what MMO she plays, it could be a fictional one. With so many MMOs out there, its hard to keep track of small references if it really is a real game.

As for the classes, from personal experience, girls tend to always play a caster over melee, atleast for endgame... so a girl tanking is refreshing... and HOT.

I'm surprised that they haven't introduced her dad to the series yet, he's quite awesome. But Yui made a subtle introduction so that was great.

Now im gonna go watch it for the 4th time for a more deeper analysis, gg me.

This episode is the win. I don't play MMO's but I hella understood what Konata was saying because I'm surrounded by people playing Crack. :P Anyway, this episode is hella fun.

and yeah,

CHA-LA, HEAD-CHA LA...

Aya Hirano singing it wins so many internets. I was laughing so hard and rocking out at the same time. I hope they release a cover CD from this. I will listen to it non-stop.

Eh~ I guess I wasn't clear in my partial joke... I wasn't implying that I thought it was real... I just wondered what it is even if its fictional... fictional=where can I find it?...even better. XP

I guess I'm a stereotypical girl then... I like my casters.. >.>; I also wish to see other roles as well... Ranger/Dancer and thief would be nice too...
But I do agree... A girl tanking is kinda hot.

Hmm... I wonder.
Hypothetical question:
If the other girls in the series would have MMO characters, what class do you think they would be? Apart from the two we know.

I enjoy questions like these but it's a hard one. Feels like anything is viable.

Kagami - I could imagine her as a nuker class, but it would be raw if she goes as some melee damage class. I say mage/rogue-style dmg, maybe even a hybrid support/dmg, i don't know.
Miyuki/Tsukasa - Both being rather healer-type characters, I can imagine these 2 as a healer class. They don't game irl so it's hard to determine what they are capable of imo.

Kagami: I agree that she would probably be some kind of damage dealing class.  I can see her either nuking or pure melee DD.

Miyuki: The main healing class.  She would be highly efficient at it.

Tsukasa: I can see her doing support of some sort.  Perhaps healer.  Or whatever job's easiest to play.  Something that always requires the same simple routine.

I agree that it's less common, but I come from FFXI and RO and maybe it's the nature of those games, but I'm not unaccustomed to girls playing tanks and/or DD.  In the case of FFXI, there's the job system, which allows for multiple high-level jobs on any single character.  And in RO, it's the tendency for everyone to play multiple classes/characters.

Unless you're thinking of "girls are white mages" stereotype, that hasn't been true my entire life.

In my entire life, girls have taken roles like ranger/hunter, warrior, and rogue/theif. NEVER casters. Casters tend to be more complicated than smacking things with your sword, or sending your pet to tank for you. Rogues are pretty fun sometimes too, I guess...

Ironic to your post, they tell me these classes are "sexy". XD;

But yeah, -I- prefer casters over melee. I can smack things around in real life, but how often can you shoot BALLS OF FIRE?

Episode 5 isn't done for me. =(

As a general survey, trying to be completely objective, I think I've seen girls play nuking mage classes more often than any other.  Then comes the healing mage class.  Just about everything else follows.

Not to stereotype or anything, but girls seem to tend to gravitate towards more supportive roles that demand more micromanagement.

If all of that is true... x.x; I've been living a lie!

YOU'VE SHATTERED MY WORLD! ;__;

It's strange. Really, now I felt that I've lived in some sort of bubble where all the servers I go to, and the cyber lounge I work at... it's the opposite. (I'm not being sarcastic, by the way. Seriously.)

The reason why I felt that way is that... stereotypically, girls don't play videogames. They normally try to play the easier classes. Take WoW for example-- girls like to choose melee classes because it's very easy just to go up to things and smack them. Also, they're typically high in HP so they don't have to worry about dying all the time.

But it's not likely they'd know how to tank, so props to Konata.

I assumed they don't normally choose casting classes because they're a bit more complicated. Not only are they more complicated, but you have a lot less HP. You also don't start out with much mana or useful spells, so you're useless until you level to a certain point. Also, as a mage, you pay attention to your buffs and you cast a set of spells in a certain order that you find is more mana-efficient, which I don't see many girls bother to calculate. (IE, you might see one spamming pyroblast and constantly using mana.) And when it comes to warlocks, you rely on your minion. Ideally, you use your tank Voidwalker, DOT like crazy, then spam all your dps spells right after.

As for priests... NO ONE WANTS TO BE A HOLY PRIEST! SHADOWPRIEST FTW. :D

There are also hybrid classes like shamans and druids. I've never in my life ever met a girl playing any of these. I get all giddy when I find out someone else plays WoW, and when I ask them what server than their main, it's normally...

"Oh, I play a hunter/warrior on blahblah server." It's also common for them to have a male character.

It's the opposite for the guys. "I play a mage/warlock on blahblah server." They sometimes have female characters, but only sometimes.

I started out as choosing male characters, because I'd preferred to be a boy. I choose girl avatars now, because I don't want to stare at a guy on my screen 24/7 now. XDDD

MMO talk is fun. I say don't be tied down by stereotypes and what not, play what's fit for you. People like to play different things and concentrate on different aspects of the game over time. Well I guess it's great that theres games like XI where you can play multiple classes.

I have to admit that many girls are not gamers, statistics show that, but it's always great to see some. Furthermore, I can still say that many girl players are not hardcore, but that's probably because they have lives unlike us guys. I've met around 30-40 girls on WoW over the past 2 years (end game wise) and I say 1-2 were a tank... majority were hardcore priests or healing druids (which are one of the major healing classes). Mage/Warlock/hunter damage dealers are quite common as well. It's rare to see warriors or rogues.

I personally play healing classes only. I enjoy micromanagement, and I enjoy dishing out damage even while being capable of healing. (with alts and offspecs) (Yes I'm a holy priest) Endgame is pretty rough and time-consuming, being a lvl 70 priest on WoW takes a lot dedication and it's quite often that I question my own life. Atleast my guild is 2nd on server trying to reach 1st? wwwww

Of course shadow is better than holy. Especially when pallys are better healers with like 700% more armor. Their healing to mana ratio is far more efficient and they cleanse for half the mana, gg. Plus illumination, BoP, DE and buffs like BoK? come on now.

On the other hand, when you are shadow, you have mind flay ticks with only 2-300 mana, VE and DoTs like VT for bosses. Shadowform + innerfire is pretty good medigation, and you have stuff like shadow weaving for warlock support during bosses. (Although many locks are incinerate for efficiency these days.) Yay holy priests with PoM, what else?

I wanted to prove how much of a loser I am, so here you go.

I'm sorry that I made this thread change to a short MMO discussion. XD;

But yeah, I guess you're right about the warrior thing, Jay. To be honest, I don't see many warriors for BOTH genders. Girls are normally hunters and rogues from what I hear. Mages and casters in general tend to be too troublesome or complicated-- but I don't mean to belittle girls.

Anywho, we SHOULD play MMOs together. I used to hang out in a IRC chan and we'd all try to find MMOs to play together. I guess we went through like... Yogurting, Trickster, and Mabinogi and whatnot. I'm not really up to playing RO, though.

It'd be fun.

I'm willing to pick up a new game with you guys.  Lets keep our eyes open and consider our options.  I don't really think the current options are worth considering.  I'm kinda reluctant to pick up WoW myself.  And I'd discourage people from FFXI because it's comparatively hard to get into and requires a huge commitment to see worthwhile results.  Yes, even moreso than most any other MMO.

I don't know a thing about WoW, but in XI, it seems like most female players are any of the mage classes: black mage, white mage, red mage, or summoner.  If they do end-game, it's not uncommon to see them have more than one mage job capped @75.  They will play other things though.  I see a number of mages pick up jobs like ninja, ranger, or any DD job.

I'm a proud white mage.  I also play bard.  I revel in full support roles that require tons of micromanagement and MP management.  Preferably managing other peoples' HP too.  I've also played FS priest in RO.

haha preist class on RO is fun x: but tired of the constat BUFFS PLX

I play on a private server on RO its called ValkyrieRO you Mainly will see me in the Loki server but I am a GM on Odin which is highrate X3 (spanish support)

But from what I notice girls and guys Play Assasin Class because it is much of an easy class and it has been considered a cheap class. while Ninjas have low HP and same with some classes x__x; hence why cards are in build. assasin crosses annoy me :d

I mainly play High wizzard because I like to do element skills D:  I also like buidling up (before I went on a haitus I was one of the greatest and active wizzards) and I also play as Stalker, Star Gladiator (Taekwon Master) and soon to be archer

Well, you have to realize that I'm talking about the majority that play. The ones who choose to consistently play-- wouldn't it be better to expect that they know what they're doing?

I see more girls than I befriend. Like you, Sunara, the girls I do choose to befriend tend to be more proficient in playing MMORPGs and games in general, so it's sort of expected that they'd know what they're doing. But you don't have to think of the non-casting classes as easier, because in a sense, they're not. They're just more straightforward and have less maintenance to deal with-- but are nonetheless still important classes. The idea of smacking things until they're dead is easy-- but that's just the idea, not the actual method of playing. The idea is what attracts most people who seek that sort of combat-system.

So we can't really judge from the people we associate with-- I refer to the majority.

Truth is, there is no real easier class, all the time. It's just some are more complicated than others. Some are more welcoming than others.

And Miyuki sang a Nakajima Miyuki song, can't believe it. That itself was enough for me.

Man, this show is getting funnier and funnier.

I loved how Konata:spoiler Does the whole Marimite thing at the beginning of the episode. I saw the series and i'm a big fan of it, but man, i fell out of my chair when I saw that. I was laughing so hard.

Overall, this episode was awesome. :D I want to see more. The last song that ends the show, is it from Saint Seiya? or a Jdorama? I would like to know.

and yes. a.f.k has released episode 7 out fansubbed.

to answer ryu's q

Nakajima Miyuki a big name artist in Japan who's been active since the 70s, got really popular in the early 90s for doing some J-drama endings. One being a really controversial drama called "Ie Nakiko" which was about a homeless girl and her struggles. I was a big fan of the series during that time, and it soared in ratings.

The best thing about Nakajima is her huge change from her singing and her radio personality. She's naturally a really funny and light-hearted person, but her songs are always dark and heavy, the lyrics makes you want to cut your wrists.

added: Actually the song Miyuki played was the ending for the NHK documentary series Project X (a really good show, but I don't want to get into that.) probably her most recent hit.

You know, lets try to document the references we can catch.  It'd be helpful for those that others might miss.

Episode 7:
-Obvious stuff: Marimite and Keroro Gunso were everywhere.  Konata's ringtone is Hare Hare Yukai.
-When Konata turns on the TV, Kuchibiru Daydream, the 2nd OP to Strawberry Panic! plays.  They're really repping the shoujo-ai series this episode.
-On Konata's computer tower, there are two figures/PVCs.  One I believe is Kooh.  I can't quite make out the other.

This episode, coupled with episode 4, allows us to date the series.  Things appear to take place during 2006.  In episode 4, Konata watches Haruhi during the spring.  This episode, she watches the latter half of Strawberry Panic! during the summer.  This follows their actual original runs in Japan.

Can people help me with some stuff from episode 6?
-Is the portion where Tsukasa is in the water a reference to anything?  The whole "Tsukasa desu.  Tsukasa desu." part.
-If anyone didn't get it, Timotei is a shampoo brand.  I'm assuming Konata's gesture of stroking her hair is a reference to a Timotei commercial?
-What exactly is Sukekiyo?  Konata mentions it when she has the mask on.
-The ED, Valentine Kiss, is a Prince of Tennis image song.  Atobe's.  I think it was sung by other people too.

Tsu, you just made this post 100 times more fun. I'll try to reference stuff that's not-so-obvious since I probably have more useless knowledge about the non-anime pop culture references while you guys get more of the thick nougety-creamy anime stuff.

Ok I'll get serious, since I've been writing down some stuff here and there (because I was so bored) I'll bust them out.

Ep2
-When Konata talks about  the pros and cons about seiyuu changes from anime and drama CD, I believe the real reason was as a mockery to it's own drama CD, since there was some drastic cast changes.

-This reference is very obscure and I can't believe I caught it. When Kagami talks about the last ep of a drama she was watching "Koi no Apron", she talks about a guy who has a red bucket over his head and the scene gets cut off. This is a reference to a classic detective drama "Furuhata Ninzaburou". In the first season of this drama, theres an episode where one of the starring roles talks about a man with the red bucket, and she gets caught before she finishes her story and she chooses not to finish it. This was kind of a big question if you were watching this show during that time, and I used to talk about it with my parents back in the day.
If you want to know more about Furuhata Ninzaburou, check here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furuhata_Ninzaburo  ....possibly one of the best drama series I've ever watched, it's genius writing, simply put. Each episode is standalone and carries unique cameos with weird quirky dialogue, smart acting with funny yet suspenseful mysteries.
ps, kyon's hand-to-forehead gesture is arguably from Furuhata, this show is one of the biggest successes in Japanese TV history and it's existance remains to be very very influential. It's hard to find anyone in Japan who doesn't know about this show.

Ep3
-Start with the obvious scene cuts for Chromartie High school and PaniPoni Dash with HORRIBLE dub. Which were awesome.

-My most favorite reference here has to be the "DragonQuest 5" reference. This is the scene where Konata talks about who you have to choose to marry and Kagami proclaims her love for Bianca. DQ5 is the only game in the franchise where you have to choose a wife and the story shifts slightly depending on who you choose. You have the Ojyousama-type Flora and the Osananajimi-type Bianca, and their stats differ slightly. I could never choose Flora in my 4-5 or so times of replaying the game, even if I did pick Flora, I would eventually hit reset and pick Bianca instead lolol.

Ep4
-Konata impersonates "Crayon Shin-chan" when Kagami finishes eating her cake. Oddly, Crayon Shin-chan has to arguably be one of the most impersonated anime characters within Japanese girls, even in the Japanese idol community.

-Small chest reference is from "Shuffle" amirite?

-The ED song that Kagami sings "Sailor fuku to Kikanjyuu" is the theme from the early 80s movie with the same title. It's about a highschool girl taking over a small Yakuza clan after her father passing away and their struggle against other clans. The original song was sung by the starring role and 80s big-name idol Hiroko Yakushimaru. It's now considered a cult classic.

Ep6
-When Tsukasa says "Yokkoi Shouichi" when she sits down, it's a old pun which ties the word "Yokkoi sho" and "Yokoi Shouichi", an old Japanese soldier veteran.

-When Konata washes her hair and repeats "Timote timote timoteee", it's referring to "Timote", a Hair conditioner label that existed in the 70-80s. I don't know if it's a direct parody from a commercial, but Konata repping that joke at her age is pure insanity.

-In the scene where Tsukasa puts her ears against a seashell and imagines herself diving into the ocean, she repeats the line "Watashi, sonna omoshiroi koto ienaito desu, Tsukasa desu, tsukasa desu." (I am Tsukasa, I am Tsukasa, I can't say anything funny.) This is taken from an act by a stand up comedian named "Hiroshi". Hiroshi became big and widely known in Japan around 2004 when he had an act where he'll repeat his name, and then zing himself in his regional dialect with raw descriptions. I was a big fan.

-At around 16:47, Tsukasa and Kagami are most likely watching the show "Trivia no Izumi". An immensely popular show with great ratings and a high budget that covers random useless facts, and having the show go out their way to prove the facts they show. Running from "How many fire extinguishers would you need to lift one man?" to "Katana blade vs Military machine guns, who would win?"

-The ED song "Valentine Day Kiss" sung by Tsukasa was originally sung by the idol group "Onyanko Club", a very popular pop group in the 80s. From what I remember, the group always consisted of atleast 20-30 members, and had over 50 members in it's lifetime. Kinda like Chekkikko or MM, girls would always "graduate" and new members would be recruited.

-In the scene where Konata scares Tsukasa with the mask of Sukekiyo, this is a reference to a big franchise of TV series and movies "Inugami-ke no Ichizoku" starring Kindaichi Kousuke. It's a classic series of mysteries with a huge fan base. Sukekiyo is one of the main characters within the Inugami story arc I believe. The Kindaichi Kousuke series made a spinoff "Kindaichi Hajime no Jikenbo", (who is Kousuke's grandson) which is more widely known by anime/manga fans.

that's about it for now. Don't think there was anything that special ep5 or 7, both were fairly weak reference wise, I mean they had great references but most were obvious.

J

ps, i forgot about the Sukekiyo thing, don't know too much about it but I got the reference so I'll add it.

The character in question is Mayumi Thyme.  Her, how shall we say, less than stellar chest is a running gag in SHUFFLE!.  She constantly makes self-justification for it.

Thanks for the other stuff, J.

It could also be parodying Gurren Lagann on the drill thing, since it's also one of the new shows this season. It'll be funny if LS throws something from Gainax later on in the series again. :P

Some more stuff.  Some of it I consider rather obvious, but I decided to note and/or give some elaboration where I thought it could be needed for those who are not familiar with the original sources.

2:
-When it shows Kagami and Tsukasa's day at 10:00 AM, there's a KAT-TUN poster in their sister's room.  They are an extremely popular male idol group in Japan.

3:
-Thank you for pointing this one out to me before, Spirit, as I didn't pay enough attention to the wedding invite.  Yui's wedding invite gives the name of her husband as Narumi Kiyotaka.  This is the exact same name of the brother of the main protagonist, Narumi Ayumu, in Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna.

-When Konata, Tsukasa, and Miyuki discuss wedding dresses, Konata brings up Angel Salvia and Angel Daisy.  These are characters from the magical girl series Wedding Peach.

4:
-Konata presents Tsukasa with a ToHeart uniform for her birthday.  This is a play on the fact that Tsukasa shares more or less the same hair style as the main girl Kamigishi Akari.  It is to be noted that the uniforms in TH1 and TH2 are different.  TH2 updated the TH1 uniform to be more modern and hip.  The main differences are in the shape of the collar and the make of the sailor blouse (button/zip up as opposed to pull over).  It's argued that the bow on the TH2 uniform is larger and fuller too.  Anyway, this is correctly the uniform from TH1, which is the game Akari is from.

-The mark on Konata's notebook is the Kamesennin symbol from Dragonball.  Seen on occasion in the series on the backs of gis.

5:
-When Yui plays on the DS, those sounds are from the first Lucky Star game for DS: Moe Drill.  It's basically an AVG with various mini-games that are more like thinking drills than anything else.

6:
-I'm sure the Initial D reference was pretty obvious.  It's a direct parody of episode 1 of the first series, where Takumi beats Keisuke on Akina; the mountain pass known for its five consecutive hairpins and Takumi's gutter run technique on them.  Only, the AE86 Trueno that Takumi normally drives is replaced with a WRX, which is another car his father purchases much later into the series (Stage 4 in the anime).

-When Konata talks about shotting the watermelon with a gun, that's a reference to Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu.

-The song mentioned in Konata's scary story is DANZEN!  Futari wa Pretty Cure.  From the anime Futari wa Pretty Cure.  Extremely popular magical girl show in Japan in recent years.  I consider myself a fan.

That's ep. 5, not 1.

Also, Konata's dialogue after the scene is a ref of Natsuki commenting on Takumi's driving (forgot which ep that was) and how it didn't make her sick like her parents' driving usually does.  She says almost the exact same thing.

It's kinda, but kinda not.  Sorta like how they have VF and Tekken inspired games, but they aren't exactly quite it.  I take it for a WRX primarily because of the hood.

hmm

Just finished watching ep 8. It felt like this episode was a little weaker than the other recent ones. It didn't cover too many references, and it felt like the whole episode lacked realism. The writing was cartoony and lacked some of the jazz I usually felt while watching this show.
Overall, it did cover some awesome events and it was a fun watch.

and it's all about MONKEY MAGIC!

hmmm, references references...

-The game footage parodied while Konata runs the 100m dash is probably that old school game "Track and Field". I like how it has "Kyonani" displayed in the game screen.

-When Konata says "Onna no ko wa elegant ni", it's probably a reference to Lumiere's quote she says often in "Kiddy Grade". Who of course, is voiced by Aya Hirano as well.

-The ending theme sung by Konata is "Monkey Magic". A classic and one of the biggest hits by the band "Godaigo". Monkey Magic was the theme song for the hit TV series "Saiyuuki" (Journey to the West) in the late 70s.

It has come to my attention that the first three spoken lines in the OP are a direct parody of the OP to the anime series Kaibutsu-kun.  Here's the OP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBttYqV-vZs).

I'll scan through episode 9 for references tonight or something.

My understanding is that it's a quiz game; hence it's "drill" as in homework drills. It also has some kind of adventure mode where you do quizzes as you head to Akihabara. I'm sorely tempted to buy it (Lucky Star is my new favorite anime), but I'll have to hold off on spending that $40 or so.

You pretty much do math equations against an opponent, as fast as you can. When you get them right, they take damage. There's a small time limit for each equation, and it won't go to the next one until you either get it right, or run out of time. I think you take damage, yourself, if you don't get it right.

But they're pretty simple math problems.

I'm going to white areas in case I mention spoilers.

Shiraishi's comments on tsundere were awesome and quite true.
I dunno about a word though... I know there are a lot of characters and people that fall into kagami's category. The whole being cold to outsiders/people who aren't too close and being nice to people you are close with is quite different from becoming affectionate over time. I disagree over the the statement that people misunderstand the word... its just that there are no other words to describe people like kagami.

The whole time, I kept feeling that certain members of this board could have been up there in his place... XD

Now onto the store employees... that was quite awesome and amusing.
I like how the guys were all so shonen but the girl was rather moe. XP Though I do say I like Konata's rejection of them. >.<

I really like Konata's dad. I wonder how many of us might potentially become just like him and treat a daughter that way. Ow~
Kona-chan's cousin... the police girl... I think she just overlooks the whole age thing and such when its Konata involved... She obviously knows her cousin and thinks she can handle that stuff. She's not going to take away konata's eroge... Konata's so serious about it that she might refuse to let her borrow manga. XP Plus she seems very lax as in on upholding the law when she's off work.

Konata's dad>Akira. XP

Let's see... current rankings..
1. Konata.
2. Kagami
3. Soujirou (Konata's dad)
4. Nanako (Teacher)
5. Miyuki
6. Tsukasa
7. Cop cousin (Yui?)
8. Shiraishi
9. Akira

Mattie-Wattie'sâ,,¢ Current Lucky Star Ratings
1. Tsukasa Hiiragi
First of all, Tsukasa reps the Akari Kamigishi look, which is made of win. Second of all, she's slow. Third, she procrastinates.

And last, but not least, balsamic vinegar. God-tier.

2. Minoru Shiraishi
In pigtails? Hot like Yoshinoya.

2. Konata Izumi
Like everyone else who continues to watch the show, I have a lot of things in common with her - including but not limited to always thinking from the otaku perspective, so to speak. Oh, and :3

4. Yui Narumi
She parties hard. Gotta respect that. In addition, she drives a mean car, she colon-threes like Konata, and she doesn't take her work seriously, which I can empathize with. XD

4. Miyuki Takara
She wears glasses (although the image of her 3.3 is cute too); she's a klutz; she has that somewhat refined elegance about her - she's a force to be reckoned with, but not a character I can empathize much with.

4. Souichirou Izumi
I want his camera. I think he's the splitting image of my potential fatherhood. XD It's pretty sad, actually.

7. Akira Kogami
Yandere bothers me a bit more than tsundere. Nevertheless, when she is in cute hyper mode, she's pretty cool. When she goes berserk/depressed, it would've killed Lucky Channel for me if Shiraishi wasn't there to be the boke.

7. Kagami Hiiragi
Kagami appears to be the most 'normal' person, but she also seems the most angry, short-fused, and irritable, and I'm not a fan of traits like that, even if they do lend to the comedy of the show. If paired with Konata or Tsukasa, she'd probably rank much higher.

7. Nanako Kuroi
I like the fang, and I think she speaks Kansai-ben? What else is there, though? I need to see more of her - but in situations comparable to episode 6.

Note: The way ties appear to be 'ranked' does not indicate favor (e.g. I don't favor Shiraishi over Konata, nor Yui over Miyuki or Souichirou).

Lets see....

1. Kagami
I'm admittedly a fan of tsukkomi characters and Kagami's tsukkomi is high tier.  I also find her tsundereish tendencies very cute.

2. Konata
Much of the initial "we're so similar"-type mentality has given way to "I relate with her a lot, but not all the time."  As far as I'm concerned, that's all her character is built on and I really don't see a whole lot of appeal otherwise.  That's not to say that doesn't carry her far.  Hell, I put her at #2.

3. Miyuki
I don't care for tennen boke.  Doji is negligible.  Meganekko is OK, but I'm not particuarily a fan.  Ojou's starting to get good.  What makes Miyuki for me is her explanations.  I've loved girls who explain everything since Washu.

4. Nanako
She tsukkomis in kansai-ben.  That's about it really.  That's her character for me.

From here, everyone might as well be lumped together cause I don't care enough to have clear distinctions in ranking between them.  This includes: Tsukasa, Yui, Akira, Minoru, and Souichirou.
Title: Lucky Star - Uu 19:You can find my people... Everywhere
Post by: Jun-Watarase on June 15, 2007, 12:15:01 PM
My rankings, with poorly explained reasoning:

1. Kagami
She is a tsundere only to the extent that she doesn't give frustration to the viewer, which is appealing to me. I tend to like tsundere, but only after seeing the deredere side of them-- so I guess this applies to Kagami as well. Her reactions to jokes and situations are also entertaining, which serves most of my giggly parts of the comedy that Lucky Star has to offer to me-- like those cute little white flowery garnish that you find in a pretty bouquet.

2. Konata
Quote from: "Tsubasa"Much of the initial "we're so similar"-type mentality has given way to "I relate with her a lot, but not all the time." As far as I'm concerned, that's all her character is built on and I really don't see a whole lot of appeal otherwise. That's not to say that doesn't carry her far. Hell, I put her at #2.

3. Tsukasa
She's adorable. There are so many things that other characters influence her to do, which she tends to make 10x cuter, because it's her. She wore the To Heart seifuku, while she already resembled Akari in some way already. I can't say that didn't amuse me for a good amount of time. She looked cute in a ponytail, pigtails... and while text messaging! Another good thing is that she is cute to a good amount-- not entirely overwhelming where something is so cute, it's sickening.

And...
Quote from: "Spiritsnare"And last, but not least, balsamic vinegar. God-tier.

4. Miyuki
Miyuki-- she's smart, she's sweet, has a body that girls wish for, and her personality is lovely.. She's like a rainbow of cliches-- GOOD cliches. She has this airy oujo-sama demeanor that she carries with her, at the same time, being a clutz when it is forgivable. You'd have to agree-- her missing her appointment, her bus stop, walking into walls, being afraid of the dentist... would it be as awesome if done by another character? She also serves as a good balance for all the other characters.

5. Sebastian
Sebastian~ His nervousness and role as a minor character is... how do I describe this-- I really don't know, but he's so cool. XD; I like his character very much, but I didn't expect it to be so hard for me to explain. He's a dork, a pushover, and... in Lucky Channel, I'm pretty sure he makes that section worth watching. It's fun watching him get abused by Akira, and if Akira just so happens to be start annoying me, Sebastian makes me feel better.

6. Souichirou
He makes me wish I had a father figure in my life. He makes me wish that I had a father like THAT. XD;

He won't accuse me of wasting my money on what I buy, share interests and opinions, be my friend, and a father. With how enthusiastic he is about Konata's life, it's heartwarming.

7. Yui
She's an aunt that you can be friends with at the same time-- I'd love to have that. Also, her cluenessness as an adult supervisor puts her at a comfortable level with all the other girls in the series. She also has :3

And I enjoy watching her yawn in the OP.

8. Nanako
Kansai-ben-- I used to dislike it when my aunts would speak it, since it's really loud and annoying at times, just like when my parents speak Cantonese. But until characters from other series *cough*hayate*cough*influenced me on how Kansai-ben can be appealing-- even CUTE, made me like it a lot more... sort of like how some Cantonese dramas and music with cute girls made me enjoy listening to the language more. It's nice to hear once in a while... almost welcoming. She also plays an MMORPG with her student, dealing DPS outside of the classroom. She's a teacher students can relate to, but she's doing her best to assume her authority.... sort of.

9. Akira
She's fun to watch, I admit. Her comedic fake cute idol-behavior is annoying, but how quick she can change from that to a an agitated actress with a 45-year old personality and temper... it's pretty darn amusing. She annoys me at times, though. I blame Sebastian for getting me to like her character at all.

I watched 10 episodes during my lunch break at work last week.  When I watch anime, I skip the opening and ending because I have one hour.  Not Lucky Star.  I must watch the opening and ending.  Is it just me that in order to watch an episode, I have to watch the opening to get myself psych up for the episode?  The opening is my all time favorite opening for all anime I have watched =)

My favorite character is Konata because she reminded me when I was in 4th grade.  After school, I went home and watch TV.  No homework.  No after school activities whatsoever.  I didn't want to miss GI JOE and Transformers.

Question on the store employees scene.  Was it a parody from another anime series?

I believe the store manager is taken straight from "Anime Tenchou", the mascot of the "Animate" company in Japan. Theres a small manga series out by the company with the same title and the other characters that were featured in ep10 were from that manga series. I also heard that Anime Tenchou was made to oppose their rival company "Gamers" mascot; Digi Charat.

To substantiate my theory before that Lucky Star takes place in 2006, I've read up somewhere that if one were to try to apply the dates in episode 12 to dates IRL, Konata and crew attended day three of Comiket 71, which was the Winter '06 Comiket.

And apparently if one where to take the map Konata outlined to the Hiiragi sisters, that covers East Hall 123.  Referring to the Comiket 71 catalog, it has been determined that much of Konata's marks were Haruhi ero. lawl  There's a Marimite book thrown in there too.

Hey, I have as much of an idea as you guys do.

It is kinda sad, although I have no opinion. I haven't watched Lucky Star. Just wanted to show you.

If you want me to get rid of it, just let me know. Nothing against anyone.

Personally, I think it's a reply in jest to a post made in jest?

Yeah, I know.

I kinda do say WTF as well.

Only thing I can say is the person that made that must have just hated Lucky Star. Out of so maany comics of that type, (MS Paint) there had to be one like this.

Almost all of them are positive...(**** YEAH! YOU ARE THE BEST BOSS FIGHT EVER!) oh well.

ep 13 was pretty good. Lots of good convos in the beginning, and nutty anime tencho stuff at the end, a good balance I say.

Although they are milking the hell out of anime tencho, it is still enjoyable... and this ep had more awesome cameos which surprised me. There's actually a lot of things to discuss about in this ep.

and damn it, no Yutaka yet.

Nah, the person who made the comic probably just thought it was kind of bleh, but really wanted to tick off the fans. So they took all the really obvious complaints/comments, and then exaggerated them to an extreme. I mean, my initial reaction to the show was pretty much along the same lines except a lot less judgmental and angry.

Episode 10... was pretty good. Animate Tenchou and then Shiraishi's bit at the end were megawesome. Plus talking about Konata's mom, hahaha, good stuff. It's like, I could pass on the parts about Tsukasa texting (as cute as she is) and doubly so on Miyuki reading... it's like, I think I've figured it out - it sets up these comedic situations, but oftentimes it doesn't actually exaggerate them enough, so when I see that, I'm like, "Oh yeah. Been there. Done that," rather than actually laughing at it.

And Konata is so right about the anime characters not looking their age. Sometimes, no matter how old they're supposed to be, they gravitate to the 16-22 age range. Or something like that. I know we've had a couple conversations (*coughakatsukismomcough*) to that effect lately.

Ep. 13:

-That ending blew my freakin' mind.
-Miyuki's New Years was good stuff.
-Kagami.  I'd trigger her flag.
-Kagami's "abunai hatsugen kinshi?"  Win.
-The little imaginary Kagami interlude?  Win x2.
-Anime Tenchou is cool as always.
-Yutaka next episode?  I think it's likely.

You should go to a corner and wallow in your shame. (ok, maybe not but still....)

And here I though there was going to be something weird.
I have to say that the imaginary Kagami is indeed awsome
I'm always open for more Anime Tenchou
Sebastian figure?! Do Want!

but omg Akira with drills!  Truly my favorite part of the show.....however biased.....

I really should look into that kotatsu before winter....

-.-; Triggering Kagami's flag? ~shun~ XP

Am I the only one that doesn't want to? O.o? I like her the way she is... otherwise it'd annoy me.

Sebastian figure.... nah, I think not. Unless it is really really excellent. I'd rather have an Akira PVC. XP

But the Lucky Star PVCs I want are Konata and Kagami... everyone else is a maybe.

BTW, that was one strange ED... -.-; Took me by surprise... I spent a majority of it wondering if it was a mistake... until they started the pop-up bubbles.... -.-;

I just want to say that the otaku who was taking pictures in ep. 16 should know better.  That's not the right uniform.  Similar, but there are some clear distinctions.

And the exchange between "Kyon" and "Yuki?"  Pretty amusing.

Ep 19:

-Hooray, lots of Nanako~
-Tamura-san is definitely one of my favorites. "You can find my people... anywhere."
-More Shirashi insanity
-Bowling scores are kinda wrong in my opinion:

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg212.imageshack.us%2Fimg212%2F5861%2Fsosbowlingscoreswg8.jpg&hash=2e4408da3f83874c4ec8f5b969d30b5d6657ed42)

Shouldn't Yuki be ultrahaxing a "perfect game"? Haruhi should do well because she's Haruhi, but the top...?

Itsuki is ok I guess... but no Fumoffu. Must not be a closed space.
