Still waiting ;_; .. I currently have Friday-Tuesday at the Saint Claire, and I'm on the waitlist for the Fairmont.

Come on guys! The Saint Claire is closer!  Trade with me! *slapped* uu.. *keeps her fingers crossed*

If my Marriott waitlist goes through I hope you get the Fairmont which is what I currently have.

Good luck to both of us then.   I come to Fanime from Colorado, and staying at the Fairmont is actually kind of part of my experience/Fanime tradition.

Hotel and Facilities / switching hotels with someone?
February 10, 2014, 11:00:23 AM
Okay, so I would like confirmation from a staff member if this is allowed, and if so, what would be the best way to go about it.

I currently have a room at the St Claire from Friday the 23 -Tuesday the 27th.  However, my first choice was the Fairmont.  (Yes, I don't mind the extra walking)  Is it possible, or permissible to do a "room swap" with someone who may be willing to take the offer?

Thank you!

Fairmont

Pros:
- HUGE ROOM
- Huge Bathroom
- Great staff ( at least in my experience )
- Connected to the Bijan Bakery.
- Close to a lot of restaurants
- GORGEOUS Hotel.
Cons
- On the pricier side.  The deposit is pretty steep too.
- A bit of a walk from the convention center.  Nothing serious, but it does wear on you if you're wearing heels and need to go back and forth a lot.
- I was rather disappointed to find that my room didn't have a vanity like previous years.  Ah well.
- If you have a room in the south tower (which I had) you need a room key to use the elevator.    Wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't for the fact that I'm extremely forgetful, and I kept thinking the elevator was broken.

Tips:

Sign up the the Fairmont's President's Club!  The basic level is free, and if you do so, you'll get free internet along with other perks such as getting your own check in line.

Do NOT touch anything in the minibar/snacks.  Basically these are all connected to sensors, and if you move or pick something up, you'll be charged.

Hotel and Facilities / Re: Fanime 2013 Roommate thread
February 25, 2013, 03:47:20 AM
As of April 3rd 2013, the room is FULL.  I'll post here if a spot opens up.

+ Introduction: Hello! My name is Michele, though I also go by Michi as a nickname.  I'm from Colorado, and I've been attending Fanime for a few years now.  I'm 29, non-smoker, and a cosplayer.   If you want, here's my facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MichiMii

+ Hotel Information: I'll be staying at the Fairmont hotel.  I'll be arriving on the 24th and leaving on the 28th.  So if you want to be able to enjoy the last day of the convention without worrying about packing, checking out, elevator lines, etc.. this might be perfect!  I have a room with a single bed reserved, though the beds are large enough to fit 2-3 people.  I'll also see about bringing an airbed, or getting a rollaway.

+ Costs: The cost will be $100 per person.  Payment must be in Cash before check in.  I will not allow payment after the convention, nor will I allow any "half now, half later deals" .

+ Requirements:
1. Roommates must be female.  Sorry, it's just what I'm most comfortable with.
2. 18 or over please.
3. NO SMOKING.  This is basically hotel policy.
4. Respect everyone's things.  This means no stealing, no touching your roommates GOT2B hair glue without permission, no throwing someone's wig on the floor to make room for your stuff.
5. NO UNDERAGE DRINKING.  If you're 21 or over, I don't mind if you have a drink or two.. just don't come stumbling in with a lampshade on your head and start puking.
6. I'm fine with other people being in the room, AS LONG AS I'M THERE.  Note, this doesn't mean you can invite your friend to come crash for the night. But if you want to use the room to relax, unwind and visit.. that's fine!  Just run it by me first!
7. If it's past midnight, try to be quiet while coming in.  There's no curfew.. but try to keep it down in case someone is sleeping.
8. DO NOT TOUCH THE MINI-BAR.  Seriously. Unless you want to pay, don't touch it.  The thing has a sensor and will charge you if an item is moved.

+ Contact: You can PM me here on the forums, or through facebook.

+ Miscellaneous: I'll be flying in from Colorado, and I plan on being in San Jose around Noon or so.  I'll make sure to give everyone my phone number to keep everyone in the loop about when my plane arrives, and when I'm close to the hotel.

I'll be going to a store nearby to stock up on food when I arrive: (water, instant soups, fruits, energy bars, that sort of thing ) and that will be free to share with everyone!

Thank you again! If you're interested or have any questions, please contact me!

For example, if a photographer has genuinely met a few snobs before, then when he or she is rejected or declined from taking a photo, then they may automatically think the worse.

And this justifies them making a dick comment?

Sweet Crispity Chocolate, No.  Of course not.   I never meant to make it seem like a justification.  If that's how it came across, I apologize.

Having a bad day, experience with other rude people, being tired, etc is never a justification to treat people rudely, or to make dick comments.  Sadly though, it happens.  Like I said: People generalize, they group people together, they get defensive.  That amazingly beautiful cosplayer said 'no, not right now' when you asked for her photo?  That stuck up bitch! I bet she thinks she's too pretty or something, probably only does private photo shoots.  Pssh yeah.  It couldn't possibly be that she's heading to the bathroom, or back to her hotel, or needs to fix something.  Hell, there couldn't even be the chance that she just got a call from a friend and there's an emergency! Noope.   .................That was all sarcasm, btw.

Or that photographer taking pictures, he couldn't possibly be just a fan of the shows and the costumes.  Nope, he's a creeper!

But I repeat, NONE of this is "justification".

A majority of what I said applies to professional and non professional as well.

Just because a photographer isn't cosplaying doesn't mean that they think we're "OMGLOL So lame" for doing so.  Hell, I know plenty of con goers and anime fans who have never even touched the idea of cosplaying. They still love it.

And while there may be people who go "What the heck is going on? Let me grab my camera!"  I doubt that 95% of the photographers, professional or not, think we're lame and that they're wasting their weekend.

Now what are my ideas on why people/photographers are rude? There's stress, nerves get frazzled, there's long lines, there's crowds, Trying to get to a gathering?  It's over there! Nah it's over there! No actually I heard it was over there!,  It's hot, you set up the perfect shot.. and someone just walked right in front of you.. for the 20th time.  Also, people are quick to jump to assumptions and to generalize.  For example, if a photographer has genuinely met a few snobs before, then when he or she is rejected or declined from taking a photo, then they may automatically think the worse.

I did see a fangirl outright tackle a particularly well-made and very attractive FF8 cosplayer several years ago at AX though

where has this fandom gone to? Don't see that at fanime anymore UNLESS it's fanime's fault if it has a 'no glomping" nazi rule to restrict that kind of "meeting" lol I surely do miss that actually!

@topic: remember guys like 95% of the photographers are NON cosplayers who arent MUCH INTO anime as we may be and are killing their weekend seeing our "late ass halloween" shenanigans, so it's actually quite common/normal for them to be dicks to us cosplayers.

..Could you please read that last part aloud to see how little sense it makes?

Of course photographers might have their favorites, and things they dislike.  One photographer might focus on taking pictures of video game cosplayers, another might hate a certain series, so they will avoid taking pictures of cosplayers from that series.  There are photographers who will snap photos of everyone, and photographers who will only take pictures of a select few "pretty people".  That's their choice.

But.. "are NON cosplayers who arent MUCH INTO anime as we may be and are killing their weekend seeing our "late ass halloween" shenanigans, so it's actually quite common/normal for them to be dicks to us cosplayers."   Really? 1. Most Photographers probably avoid cosplay because A. They want to focus on taking pictures, and not having their picture taken.  2. Photography equipment and cosplays don't always mix.

But they're killing their weekend?  Really?  Then why the hell would they go all the way out to a convention?  Pay registration? Stay there for 3-4 days? Lug around equipment, pay for a hotel?  Why do all of that for our "late ass halloween shenanigans"?  Why not focus on other things?  Wedding photos, landscape photos, taking photos of birds.  ._.;

They would not spend so much time, money and effort on photographing something they hated, or thought was lame.

on top of the deposit before check-in.  No Ice Machine! If youre not going to have a mini fridge at least have an ice machine on the floor!

O.o The Fairmont has ice machines..  It's just that it's behind a door instead of out in the open.  :p Literally right across the hall from my room was a door that said "ice".    Also, I looked at my bill, there was no charge for using the ice bucket or coffee machine.  Snack Bar yes, but the staff told me about that right up front.

Now for my own review.

Hotel Name: Fairmont

Would you book next year: YES.  This is officially my Fanime Hotel.
Pros:
Large Rooms
Vanity area
Close to food and the Bijan Bakery.
Friendly Staff ( at least in my experience)
Fast uncrowded elevators ( though there was a bit more crowding this year, probably due to the swap meet and autographs being there)
The lounge/lobby area is gorgeous.

Cons:
Expensive, Especially since I stay until Tuesday.   However if you plan ahead, know about the deposits and don't use a debit card.. you should be fine.

Housekeeping: This usually isn't my experience, but this year.. housekeeping was a little.. lacking.  Shampoos and soaps weren't replaced, dirty glasses and mugs were taken but new ones weren't given..    I've stayed at the Fairmont before and this is the first time this has happened.

A bit of a walk.  Honestly I don't mind the walk, but it's a little unnerving when I leave the convention center at 2:00 AM in the morning and I don't have anyone to walk me back.

Tips!
Join their President's club.  There are different tiers, and you can get some good benefits at their basic level. (Which is free) Benefits include: Your own check in/check out line, free internet and wireless, and some others.

They DO offer refrigerators for rent for $25 a day.  Something I will be looking into next year.

Registration / Re: My refund?

Given that it was over a weekend (a Holiday Weekend at that) and depending on what sort of payment transfer it used, it might take a few days to show up in your bank account.

Hotel and Facilities / Re: Security Deposits at hotels
January 02, 2012, 10:42:04 PM
Security deposits at hotels are not a new thing, nor are they a Fanime thing, or even a convention thing.

Most Hotels charge a security deposit, but it's a "hidden" charge more or less, since it's usually refunded back to you.  The amount varies from hotel to hotel, I recently got back from a hotel that had a $25 a night security deposit.

Hotel and Facilities / Re: Which hotel to pick???

I've been to Fanime 3 times now, and I've stayed at the Fairmont twice.  .....I plan on staying there every year.

It's spacious, the rooms are comfortable, the bathroom is huge, and the bakery/cafe next door? Love it.

And honestly, it's really not that far from the convention center at all, or perhaps I just like the walk? Meh.  Though at night-time I do recommend sticking together in a group, always had someone walk me back.  Safety first, and all that.

:/ Can't you just get a state ID?  I believe you can get them down at the DMV.  It's a government issued photo ID, and I'm sure Fanime would take it.
