Title: Old School Anime Thread (REPRESENT!)
Post by: OSAKA on April 19, 2006, 12:29:52 AM
Reset your long dead tamagotchi and slip on those kicking B.K. Knights! It's time to show some love for your old school favorites in Japanimation before you even knew Japan even existed!

List your favorite anime from back in the day and give us some old school love on them.

Before Naruto, the PREMIRE ninja anime was NINJA SCROLL! Heavy on action, heavy on the blood and gore, and heavy in SNAKES IN VAGINAS! Ninja Scroll is simply a bad ass classic. One MOVIE beats a 200 something episode series like naruto anyday in my eyes.

Shadow Skill in my mind is still one of the most underated anime's ever made, with incredible (for it's time) fight scenes, and the most beautiful final 10 minute final battle ever. It wasn't all speed lines and transformation spells, if you want to see a heavily physical fight done right, check out Shadow Skill (but not part 2, that was garbage)

Honestly, new anime (2000 and up) while there are a few good one's here and there, don't have that edgey, adult feeling that they once used too. Does anyone remember the first minutes of Ghost in The Shell Where LT Kusanagi blow's some politiction's head off, and their spinal cords and stuff everywhere? Where's the shock value, the utterly out there bizarre and out there that old school anime had? I watched cartoon animals hit each other with kitchen utensils in the afternoon, then watched DRACULA BLOW A MINION'S BRAINS ALL OVER A WALL at night watching Vampire Hunter D.  Anyone else digging me on this? There's just too much drama (fo' yo' momma) now!

Alright time to let this rant go (for now) Time to pass it to the otakus to keep it real and represent your old school anime.

Other major worthy mentions:
-Dominion Tank
-Dirty Pair (flash and original)
-Angel Cop (MUCHO BLOODY AND GOOD)
-Wicked City (walk in vagina's, anyone?)
-Project A-Ko

OSAKA.

Urusei Yatsura!

(https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdownpic.chinaemu.org%2From%2FNDS%2520Clean%2520ROM%2FPIC%2F0249%2520-%2520Urusei%2520Yatsura%2520Endless%2520Summer%2520%28J%29.jpg&hash=a67a3cb14b319cb203e342d6c7023d66d14bd47b)

I have over 37 VHS tapes of the series and own 3 of the Boxsets. That show never fails to amaze me.

Project A-Ko and Robot Carnival pretty much got me interested in anime.

How about Tenchi Muyo (I prefer the T.V. series myself).

I'm somehow deeply pained to realize that SM and Tenchi Muyo (And CCS?!?!) are old enough to be considered 'old school' nowadays...

Though I realized just a little while ago that Bebop is getting on in years, too.  -_-;

Nooooooooooooo!!!  Bebop is old school now?!?  Gawd I feel old.

I guess the real question is, what makes an anime "Old School"?  There probably is a big grey area on this one.

SM & Tenchi certainly don't feel old-school yet.  And CCS is totally not old-school.  That began airing in 1998.  It hasn't even been a decade.

All good picks everybody! Keep on representing!

Someone asked me this question the other day when I mentioned the topic of old school anime, (since it would be slightly unfair to put late 90's anime into the old school column) So I agree with the last poster that said stuff 10 years from now would be suitable.

Next up: Key the Metal Idol.

On KTEH, Yurei Yatsura and KMI were the hour anime block the station had, Key to me was then the total Mind Fuck Anime.  A robot girl that must make a thousand friends decides to become an idol, evil business men try to suck GOO out of other wannabe idol's and makes them lip synch for dancing robo-puppets. Total awesome.

Give us some examples of what you think are old school.

I find it hard for myself to call anything made after the 80's "old-school."  So examples would consist of Gundam, Macross, Project A-ko, Gatchaman, Galaxy Express 999, Lupin, Urusei Yatsura, Doraemon, etc.

Of course, I know most people don't really share my views and I suppose I can see the logic behind calling anything a decade old "old-school."

Sore-ike! Anpanman and Sazae-san would also be more older examples of vintage anime. Hell, Sazae-san was a 1969 release. Both titles are referred to constantly in a parody-ish manner (Genshiken's "Zasae-san", for example) or still use aspects of the anime (Taiko no Tatsujin: Wakuwaku Anime Matsuri! has both themes in their songlist.)

Slayers may also be dubbed a recent "old-school" anime; it aired in '95, so that fulfills Tsubasa's decade-old criteria.

And, just because it had to be said: VOLTRON, REPRESENT! 8D

I used to like Anpanman as a little kid.  Boy now its way too kiddish for me.  For Sazae san its a very good show to learn about real life Japanese culture and pretty much easy to understand while you're learning Japanese.

I watched that anime when I was a little kid at japan.

2 years ago I read Dragon Quest manga at my mom's friends place in japan.  Pretty interesting and a classic.

this is old school stuff?
I guess Lupin III, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, stuff that actually looks its age
Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Devilman; the real oldies!

I agree that Akira and Ghost in the Shell have become classics, even if they relatively aren't that old...

I can't believe Bebop would be considered Old School!!! Does the same go for Trigun? Although considering how many times it's been seen, I guess its getting there.

How bout Doraemon? haha ^_^

Akira
Unico
Jack and the Beanstalk
Robotech
Voltron
Transformers
Ranma 1/2

and all those ones they had on Nickelodeon during the 80's
Belle and sebastion
Grimms fairy tails

There is no way Bebop and Ghost in the Shell can be considered "Old School" give it another 5, 10 years.

If anyone remembers back in the late 90's, the Sci Fi channel (Still young it was) has Anime on Saturday mornings. Sure, everything they showed was subbed, but it was still sooooo freekin awesome...

I still <3 Iria: The Zeiram Animation.

I know that there is a live action series out there based on that, I wonder if it is available online somewhere...

Haha, most people would probably think the subbed aspect was a bonus.  Personally, I remember seeing an anime movie on scifi once when I was in middle school at some point.. I was trying to watch it with an anime-fanatic friend (late at night/early morning), but we kept talking so much that 20 minutes into the movie, we had no idea what was going on and gave up on it. :P

o/~ To-to-ro to-to-ro! o/~

Gotta represent the Miyazaki!

And if you guys are counting sailor moon and tenchi as old school, then I just have one thing to say:

I hold no enmity against those coerced into evil. But, to those vile beings that toy with the hearts and souls of men, since the time of ancient gods we have been your destroyers! Now, the 108th generation Devil Hunter Yoko is here!

....Yeah, Ive got it memorised. You know you love it.

Also, CardCaptor Sakura? Old school? Jeez, make me feel like some kinda geezer or something. CCS isnt old school =P
