I was wearing an outfit almost exactly like the ones in my sig =)  White marine vinyl from head to toe, blue vinyl boots and gloves.  Since I was helping with the drinks, I had to touch the water from time to time so the vinyl got a little slippery, and I got some complaints =)

General Convention Discussion / why i dont glomp
June 02, 2007, 01:35:19 PM
You know, this being my first Fanime and all, I was almost determined to glomp at least one person before the event was over.  But, you know, every time I saw a sign asking for glomps, not only did I feel rather out of place just throwing my arms around said person and hugging them (since I refused to tackle-glomp), but I kept calling to mind this 220lb guy tackling this cute little thing to the ground.  I'm 6'2 and slim, but still, the thought of tackle-glomping someone so much smaller than me just felt wrong.  I guess you know how it goes...if it don't feel good, don't do it =)

I was the only Masaki Tenchi, and the only character from Voltron (Lance =).

I would have very much liked to have had Heero's experience (who I did meet, btw, hey! =), but I think I ended up getting perceived as one of the "sketchy" guys, since I'm like...old and stuff, being 28 =(

Anyway, if anyone felt that way, I apologize, but to me, dancing with people on the sidelines is the only way to make sure that people who either didn't bring a partner or are not being asked get to dance!  I think it's a matter of perception, because I dance a great deal with teenagers at the balls I go to, and no one thinks twice.

Got it...I'll probably send the presentation to everyone on the list this evening when I get home. =)

Sure, no problem...let me know your email and I'll include you in the group of recipients.

Just wanted to thank everyone that came to my panel - I think I had somewhere between 25-30 people there.  For those of you who gave me emails, I'll be sending you the presentation later on (it's a bit large though).  Feel free to contact me at any time to ask any shoe/boot related questions! =)

Yah =/  I was hoping to hang out with some of the older crowd too...maybe next time?~

Angel, you're probably right - every time I refilled the jugs (and I did it two at a time), then I went back to do one dance, and then checked again, they were nearly empty).  The only way I could have kept up is if I made water duty my non-stop function, and I didn't really sign up for that =)  However, now that we have this feedback, I think there will be a much better arrangement next time...I shudder to think what might have happened if no one had been trying to provide water =)

In response to Ekac, I've been to a lot of balls, and the understanding at the ones that I go to is that you're expected to dance with other people rather than just the partner you came with.  That way, people who don't have a partner can still have a good time.  In fact, one of the things I usually do is specifically ask people who are sitting along the sidelines (i.e. wallflowers) to dance.  At the B&W ball, I never would have expected so many people to respond in the negative.  I think maybe if we made it clear during the dance class that people who just walk up to you and ask you to dance may not just be trying to hit on you, but may simply want to dance, so give them the benefit of the doubt.  If they ask you to dance the next dance or try and flirt with you, then you can say no =)

I'd also be happy to help teach two sessions of the class next year, and this time I'll be sure to have some great waltz music!

My comments:

Did you like it? => Yes, for the most part
Was it fun? => Yes, for the most part
Would you go again? => If I'm at fanime con, then yes
What could have been done better?

1) First, let me address Felicity's point - I had no idea that there would be so many people there, so I only bought about twelve bottles of drinks and two cases of water (gratis, since there was no budget for snacks or drinks).  When we ran out of soda and juice, I started filling up the empty jugs with water.  True, it took me about ten minutes to come up with this idea, but I think I made somewhere between 10-15 trips back and forth filling up two liter bottles of water at the fountain =)  Possibly the drink bar just looked empty, but the bottles in the tub did have water in them.  In the future, a water cooler with a great deal of spare water jugs next to it would be very helpful.  I'm sure the ravers afterwards would also appreciate it.

2) A bigger room is a must.  When dancing, I also bumped into several people just standing around in the middle of the room or dancing also because things were so tight.

3) A bit more light, at least for the Ball part, would have been nice to find people and admire outfits.

4) A clearer set list or announcement of the type of dance would have helped many people.   Usually you can tell by the beat, but for the beginners, it's not so easy.  And more waltz! =)

Come to the ball, and then you'll know exactly who to look for =)  You know you want to!

If I get my presentation for the panel finished before 7, look for the tall guy in Edo period hakama, kimono, tabi, and zori.  Saturday during the day, I'll be Masaki Tenchi, but in the evening, look for Lance =)  Sunday is TBD...Monday may not happen, but we'll see...!

I'll be looking for you!

Shiny things are well and good, but not an excuse.  Have you figured out what you're going to wear so I can look for you and heckle you in person? =)

Quote from: "Kandybar"1fireforge - you're doing a Voltron cosplay?  Oh, you are so my hero.  I've been debating making an Allura costume for a few years now.

Now, what has prevented you from making your Allura outfit? =)

Gaming / Official Texas Hold'em Tournament

I am definitely there, at least for Friday night.  That is, provided I get my last minute accessories and such done tonight =)

Yeah, it's a tricky subject.  As much as I'd love to have some champagne and/or wine available for those to partake, it saves a lot of headaches in doing the ID thing and possible complications with the hotel.

Welcome Kandy!  There's tons to do and see, especially for us over 21 folks. Plus, the ball on Sat. Night is not to be missed...hope to see you there.  I'll be the guy in blue below =)

This will also be my first anime con also, but I just had to get a few outfits together.

Dance Lessons are from 12 to 2pm in Ballroom B, the same place that the dance will be held. (Thanks, Heero =)

Kuroi, I'll put you down as tentative for the red...the one in the upper right is actually a navy, not black. =)

That's the thing - no one wants to soil their gloves and such with messy foods, so the food has to be pretty easy to eat, not too crumbly, and such, so I'm thinking that Doritos and the like are out.  Corn chips aren't too bad, neither are cookies, but I'm thinking this will be more like snacks rather than dinner =)

There will actually be a water station right outside and one inside the ballroom, but if some people prefer bottled water, we can make that happen also.  I figure I'll do a tentative list on the first post of the thread, and update it as we go on.

Also, unfortunately adult beverages are out...there are just too many difficulties with it.

So, because of budget/Union Rules/etc., Fanime can't officially provide us any food or drink at the ball.  However, if a certain individual were to buy a whole bunch of stuff and then just happen to leave it on a table for all to enjoy, then that's just fine.  So, I need your help...what kind of snacks/munchies/drinks do people want?  Otherwise, I'll just bring a whole bunch of snacks, like chips, salsa, doritos, soda, etc...Any preferences?

--List so far--
Drinks:
Couple of cases of water
Several 2Ls of various sodas (coke, sprite, lemonade)
Several jugs of different juices

Food:
Tortilla Chips (the dry, non-messy kind)
Cookies
Wheat Thin-type crackers

Misc:
Gum
Altoids
