Title: Barracks
Post by: kam_islash on June 02, 2006, 11:31:59 AM
My idea is this: We use one of those big empty rooms to house 20-40 odd beds, cots, or futons to create a sort of communal sleeping room for people without rooms.  It could even have a fantasy setting theme to be like an Inn.

-There would be blankets and pillows available.
-The room will always be dark and quiet with the heat on

Hopefully this will curb people going insane from lack of sleep which causes hallucinations, anxiety, and an impairment of judgement.

As I said in the other thread, chances are this will not happen for a variety of reasons

1) The SJCC does not allow their property to be used for sleeping. Chances are they don't want a room or two full of people sleeping.

2) The number of cots you want is way WAY too few. 8,000 people came this year dude. And less than 1,000 rooms were available between all the hotel rooms. You're talking about thousands left over. There would be sheer madness. The number of staff that would be needed even to keep people civil about cots and sleeping would be way too much.

3) It's unfair to the people who paid money for hotel rooms at the hilton and the marriott and would cause further confusion. People would just assume they can get a cot and then set their bag down on one to 'claim' it or something like that. Of course, that wouldn't last and when they get back someone will be sleeping there. Anyways, it just wouldn't work.

4) The smell. Ugh, fanboy funk to the max would be in there. Sleeping on cots? Multiple people taking turns on the same cot? No shower? Yeah...bad mix.

Won't work dude, sorry.

Only if you'll:

1. Negotiate a contract with the SJCC to that effect on you own time and dime
2. Pay for the room for all days of the con
3. Pay for the futons/beds/cots/what-have-yous
4. Pay for the pillows
5. Pay for the blankets
6. Pay for the shipping fees of items
7. Pay for the union workers to move the items into the room
8. Set up and follow through on a way to keep people's stuff safe while they're sleeping
9. Be prepared to take on the consequences should anything happen to people and/or property while in the room
10. Be prepared for parents who may oppose the idea
11. Be prepared to stay glued to that room unless you've volunteers to help you man the place
12. Be prepared for futons/beds/cots/pillows/blankets to possibly "walk off by themselves"

Oh, I'm sure that I'm missing a few things here and there, but if you can't do at least the items listed above (starting with item #1), then a big and hearty:

NO.

Thank you, and good day.

[edit] Oh, and be prepared to deal with any and all body odor. People WILL complain, and they'll all be directed to you at that time.

There's no need to be rude about  it...
And it wont become a halfway house or a brothel; its going to make your paying customers who could only afford to pay for admission and woud otherwise have no place to sleep able to find repose.  If you're worried about hobos coming in, check con badges,

Some people can't afford hotel rooms!!!!!

1. Not that expensive
2. Fanime gets a lot of rooms already you have plenty of unused space
3.  You guys spend so much money on advertisement whats a futon gonna do?
4. Thrift store.
5. Thrift store, big lots, you can get such things very cheaply these days.
6. Buy locally.  Don't bother with shipping.
7. To hell with the unionsl have volunteers do it.
8. 4 hour shifts volunteer security/fireguard
9.  Easily done.
10. Why are there underage persons without a room in the first place? I'd be questioning the sanity of said parents who didn't bother to take them home or get a room with them./
11. Volunteers would be on 4 or 8 hour shifts
12. 4 hour shifts, day in and day out.  Use volunteers.
12. BO is easily handled by Glade plugins and/or handing out little samples of Axe bodyspray like my college does.

I don't see what is so difficult about that if you use cost effective budgeting practices and avoid union labor.

Seriously, either provide graveyard entertainment that doesn't involve porn or make it easier for congoers without rooms to get rest.

Get out of here dude, all you're doing is annoying everyone with your blanket statements, generalizations and other such biased attitudes.

With paper signs out front: "Catgirl needs attention." "Maid for hire." "Will Yaoi for anime."

Please, there is no way that the SJCC would agree to this "barracks" idea. It would be a disaster waiting to happen and would give the con a bad name.

Thanks for the input, but there are a couple of issues that you're ignoring/don't know about:

2. We actually don't have a lot of unused space. We've used every single room this year that was leased to us and plan to do so next year.

3. Please don't make your assumption fact.

7. By contract with the Convention Center, anything that gets moved in or set up in the rooms has to be done by union labor. We can not have volunteers do it.

8 and 12. This would have to be staffed (no volunteers), meaning that there has to be a department created and staff to handle it.

13. I've smelled covered up BO a lot; just covering it up doesn't address the actual issue that they smell. People need to shower everyday.

9. Not so. Every event has hours and hours of planning and work behind it to make it work at con, regardless if it's the internet cafe or music fest.

cheers,

No one is being rude or trying to slam you. In fact I believe that the Fanime senior staff who have replied are showing a tremendous amount of "patience" towards you, more so then what I would of given you if I had to read everything you wrote. I guess that makes them a better man then me.......errr....woman.

kam_islash, you're not the first person who came up with an idea that "management" did NOT like nor will you be the last. If every person were to get sore because their idea went down in a ball of flames believe me they'd be an awful lot of hurt feelings around here (myself included!). Yes sometimes even staffers and even management come up with ideas that get the thumbs down. A disagreement does NOT == rudeness

put your chin up soldier and don't take it personal  8)
