Speaking from my experience, a friend of mine went along as a character from homestuck last year, and though I may not like the source material, I can truly respect and admire her drive for completing such a wonderful display of cosplay and wearing it proudly.
Truth be told, I'm going to be honest here, I don't consider myself a fan of most animes. There's nothing wrong with them, just not for me. Yet I attend fanime every year. Why? The cosplayers, of course~
One doesn't need to love, or, hell, even moderately ENJOY the source material to appreciate amazing and awesome cosplay. As long as a person enjoys something themselves enough to put time and effort into a piece, and as long as they're having FUN with it and allowing others to do the same, they deserve nothing other than praise and respect~ :3

I, too, have come across this issue before. Being of native descent myself, my darkened skin isn't exactly "accurate" to some characters I choose to cosplay, although people tend to forget that the entire reasoning behind cosplay is fun, pure and simple.
I wonder, what do people who find this "lack of accuracy" think of people cosplaying as dark elves, or aliens, or orks and things of that nature? "Oh, their skin's not REALLY green, they can't pull that off!"
The entire notion behind that way of thinking is just ignorant and awful /)_=
So long as a person is putting true EFFORT into a piece and is having FUN with it, they deserve nothing other than praise and respect~

I recall running into and passing the time with a wonderful blu fem scout (TF2) cosplayer whilst my brother competed in the TF2 competition, would be nice to catch up this upcoming fanime :3

I got a tunnel snake, a talon Merc, and an NCR ranger coming along this year~ :3

Atlas & P-body will be back this year~ ^w^

Hallo everypeoples~
This is my first year attending in which I will be doing a different cosplay every day- buuut I'm still working out the scheduling of said cosplays to ensure that I can attend each of their respective gatherings, if any such gatherings exist~
So, I'd be much appreciative if anyone could let me know if any such gatherings which fit my cosplays come up, and point me to their threads or just let me know what time it's going on :3
Anyways- Just in case I change my signature, I'd best put down my planned cosplays here:
-Tunnel Snake, from Fallout 3
- Khajiit Mage, from Elder Scrolls, Skyrim
- and my brother and I will be returning this year as Atlas & P-Body of Portal 2
