Fanime will be over on Monday May 25 at about 5pm~6pm.

Fanime and some [probably most] staff will be drinking to no ends by this point. :P

You bet! Why do you think I requested tuesday off?

so does anyone else remember when they were a closet geek? Or were you always an open geek? Or are you still a closet geek?

I don't really tell a lot of people because I don't like being roped in with the stereotypes. If you were around the campus you'd know the lot I speak of. At school I'm mostly just a guy who tutors, loves djing/turntablism and has an xbox 360. Then again, I'm not sure if I really count as an otaku/gamer anymore. I think at one point I was really into it (took japanese in highschool, had an anime club, watched a lot of mainstream crap) but as I've moved through the college years I find myself watching less and less anime and only playing the couple of games I truly love. Don't get me wrong though, I still keep up on fansubs and manga translations, just never get around to watching/reading them, heh.

I am, however, a depraved filth merchant from the depths of 4chan and Something Awful. Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to hide that when I'm in a relationship? Its like a double life, people!  :-[

They know what's up.  ;)

Yeah, that's a good point.

So you know, I'm also going to implement a no duplicate pick rule. If one player selects a song on you, then you shouldn't be able to use the exact same song on them that round. Its not DDR though, so I don't think we'll have a bunch of scrubs picking Holic or V heavy on one another over and over ;) I'll make updates tonight.

i have been to raves, i do call it "the fanime rave" but really raves are not like that, yeah glowsticks and all are present at real raves, but Fanime is better than that, i would much rather be at the Fanime rave than a real one. at a real rave there are too many stupid people >.< plus at the one here in Fanime, there is better music. like the first year they played Darude, i never hear them at a real rave.

Ok, I'm not trolling, but I did want to put in my two cents.

If you've really been to legitimate "raves" before you must be pushing 30 or older, because at 23 I can only imagine what the original rave scene was like in the early 90s (somewhat envious of those who got to experience it firsthand.) Also, you've never heard Darude at a club/rave before because nobody really spins trance anymore, least not out here. If you like trance thats cool, but its not really the big deal around here in the Bay Area.

Again, not being a troll just trying to educate *don't hit me*  :-X

But perhaps speculating *_* Are there really enough good IIDX players to have a tournament?

Back in the day, yes. *thinks about good old days (circa 2000-2004)* I don't play anymore otherwise I'd include myself. But hey, 2 years ago I had all but a few 11s and a handful of the 12s AAA'd (Not sure how good that is anymore what with people bragging about AAing black anothers and shit.) There's still a few players greater than I lying around, though. Kay0ss and CHKN (both california local) are still playing to my knowledge, and there's still a trickle of players catching up, but the pipeline is so small now.

To me, IIDX is a completely different game now compared to what is was in the beginning up until a few years ago.
I feel like its going the way of DDR, downhill at an alarming rate.
(the whole LOL EVERYTHING IS A HARD 12 now just completely turns me off) I'm happy I retired when I did.
And I'm a little heartbroken that VJ Army is closing too, but like when NNR shutdown, I still have the pics and the memories.
*manly tears*  :'(

If you're still playing bemani for score, I hope you're having fun as well. Without the fun there is no community.

OK

Before I get down to the nuts and bolts, I just wanted to express
why I'd rather run the tournament on GOLD rather than TROOPERS:

Don't like DJT because
1) DJ Troopers has stupid black anothers. They're difficult in stupid ways, and its a constant reminder of why I hate IIDX now.
(LOLOL EVERYTHING IS A 12.)
2) I wasn't a fan of the song selection on DJT, most of the songs (save ICARUS and Digitank System) were very very forgettable.
3) The CS songs weren't THAT great.

I like GOLD because
1) We ALSO didn't have it last year (just Happy Sky and DistorteD)
2) Good variety of songs (and good revivals), fun charts.
3) The CS songs, oh my god. GOLDEN CROSS, BITCHES!
4) Did I mention GOLDEN CROSS?

If anyone has an educated opinion on Troopers over GOLD thats not "It's the new mix," I'll happily debate it. (I'm looking at you, John 8))

***TENTATIVE TOURNAMENT RULES***

Similar to the format I've used in previous tournaments, it goes as follows:

Double elimination,
Qualifier song determines seeding/brackets (song will be chosen by me day of tournament)

*****CONTROLLERS WILL BE PROVIDED, WE HAVE KOCS BUT I WILL TRY TO PROVIDE ASCS IF THATS MORE DESIRABLE*****

Regarding mods:

*****RANDOM AND SUDDEN+ ARE ALLOWED AND HEAVILY ENCOURAGED*****

*****HARD MODE IS FINE TOO, BUT IF YOU FAIL MID-SONG THATS THE SCORE YOU TAKE*****

No Easy Mode
No Autoscratch
No 5key
No Srandom/Random+ (if you REALLY want to use S-random and both players agree to it I'll try and work it out.)
No Regul speed

Anything else seems ok with me, if you want to turn BG vids off, go ahead, AAA EX counter, fine too. As long as it doesn't compromise
the fairness of a match its cool.

Rounds will go something like this:
After seeding/brackets have been done, players will go head to head (1 tv per player) and play 2 songs. Each player
will get to choose one of the two songs played (difficulty of songs depends on the round.) After each song is played I'll record
the scores (DO NOT PRESS ANYTHING AND MOVE OUT OF THE SCREEN THAT SHOWS YOUR SCORE I WILL BE ANGRY/EMO/BUTTHURT AND I DONT WANT ANY DO-OVERS.) Both scores from each player will be added up, and the person with the most EX points wins, loser goes to loser's bracket. In the loser's bracket, winner advances, loser is eliminated. In the rare event of a tie or some other weird mixup, I'll get creative 8)

Difficulty of songs are as follows:
*****REALISTICALLY THE LOWEST DIFFICULTY OF SONG YOU CHOOSE SHOULD BE 8s*****

Qualifier will most likely be a 9 on hyper

1st round:
Capped at 10s

2nd round:
Capped at 11s

3rd round/semi finals/etc:
Anything goes, enjoy your 12s.

Finals: A custom course of my personal favorites, top score takes 1st place 8)

I like this style because I want each player to play their best game, what better than to let them pick the songs?
That way if you get slammed on your opponent's song choice, you have a chance to fight back with your best song.

OH YEAH PRIZES ARE COMING GUYS, NOT LIKE LAST YEAR. TO BE DETERMINED :O

(P.S I owe Kay0ss & CHKN prizes from a mixup last year, come see me or Richard in private)

1 hit K.O on smash bros. debate.

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=165363

In all my years I've never heard of a fighting game needing fan-based tweaking to make it "competitive."

Not to sound condescending but this is the kind of thing I expect from the smash community. *sigh*

Hey, just lettin you guys know I'm going to do everything in my power to put up good SFIV and Third Strike tournaments this year.  8)
Hopefully I'll be able to hook up with other e-gaming staff at the meeting next weekend so details can be hammered out.

Its unfortunate that I've had to quit all the hand-based bemani for a while due to personal injury, I've been taking up the dance-games a lot again.
Still AAAing 9s on DDR, still clearing 18s on Pump doubles =D

The IIDX tournament I was able to pull out of the fire, last minute. But I thought it was funny that Kenchan and I pretty much had to run the tournament ourselves.  ::)

Next year I would like to run full-blown bemani tournaments myself, with much more preparation and a bigger turnout (since I'll probably cross-post it on bemanistyle/ddrfreak/VJarmy/etc) Pop'n Music, IIDX, even Guitarfreaks and Drummania if you guys can find ASCs.

so when does the arcade open and will it be 24/7?

If I recall, its usually open about the same time the dealer's hall opens on friday. Also, the arcade has been 24/7 at the San Jose Convention Center since 2004, so one can only hope.

Dammit, I thought I told him NO DODONPACHI this year, NO. Oh well, The addition of Espgaluda 2 is nice. ID 4 will be a hit, and I've already played on the DDR machines and the pads are decent. Looking forward to it =D

Gaming / Re: Arcade Game List 2008?
May 15, 2008, 07:37:35 AM
OFFICIAL MESSAGE from Eric over at OCE regarding the complete game list.

He's been extremely busy but will have a complete list done by the end of the week for certain.

I see him roughly once a week at my local arcade and its good to see him taking the time to polish up all the machines he's intending to bring down for the con.
If things go in the direction they are right now, there will be something for everyone to play, and everything will be in good condition. I know for a fact there will at least be a few new things different from last year. Just stay tuned another day or so for the official roster, ok?
