Hello everyone.
A couple of friends of mine where thinking of taking AX's 21+ m&g idea to Fanime.
So far its just in the brain storming part, although we did thought about it last year but never got around to it.
So what is a 21+ m&g you ask?
It's simple really those who are of the legal drinking age would head over to near by bar and enjoy the company of fellow Fanime attendees while having an alcoholic drink.
So how about it? Anyone interested? Or have some ideas as well?

downnnn :)
im sure theres def a couple of bars around the area that we can all chill at
I'm down- but i also plan on going to the 21+ Rum Party...
Rum party huh? Tell me more.
The next time I'm in San Jose I'll make sure to do some scouting.
The only places I been too was the bar next door, and one of the local breweries right up the street. But their beers where kind of bad, the kind only a frat kid would drink. The bar next door was typical high price hotel bar price.
I live in San Jose... it's just a suburb of San Francisco... :(
But when Fanime is here it is the center of the universe!!!

yeah... that was kinda pointless post...
Anywho- back to the rum party- i will dig up the schedules from previous years n post here the previous details. But I recall it being in one of the Hilton floor lounge rooms.
We could always have someone with a suite host a party with byob or something...

Not awkward! Just saying that, "yes I have been to some of the bars/clubs near the convention" and they are nothing to write home about. But, I suppose with enough booze anything can be fun.

Not pointless. San Jose is meh. It could be great but it just doesn't want to be. Besides, not many people are posting in these forums... why would you say that was pointless. Ugh! Don't bother answering.
On with the posts...
Ok....thanks for your informative posts
Back on topic,
I see, so the rum party is more of a byob room party. Seems like a good idea. I did thought of hosting a room party but I wasn't in charge of the room last year.
Although that could change this time, I'll have to play it by ear.
There always the pros and cons for a room party and a bar/club.

No, the byob is an idea I just came up with right now. The rum party was(dunno if it'll be there his year-....yet) an actual event.

A room party would be too cramped and a bar isn't as comfortable as a lounge room.. at least the last time I went to such a thing.
I've so far found a copy of the 2011 Swap Meet form, but I'm still looking for some of the schedule booklets I kept...
so i do remember the rum party. it was an actual event hosted by fanime but it didn't have alcohol. since it was a fanime-run event, they kept it PG, so they had like soda or soemthign instead of the alcohol
a room party sounds awesome (ive been to a couple in the past couple of years) and byob is DEFINITELY enforced there
so if someone coudl put together a room party, that would be cool
im still down to ask some of my friends who live in san jose where some chill ass bars are

Hmmm... that's wierd because I remember seeing it one year and passing by the room and there were definitely people drinking...
maybe they had two rum parties? but i know that one of them was definitely PG/no alcohol
iono about the other one
i think its still really early in regards to finding parties
theres always parties and watnot being put up like the week or two before fanime happens
in the meantime, lets just keep brainstorming for places like echo said

Are they? I haven't been to the bars at Fanime's hotels, but I went to the bar at Sac-Anime's hotel last year and it seemed normal priced to me. Although, I suppose that could be because I spend a lot of time in San Francisco where all the bars are pretty pricey, lol. I just figured going to one of the bars connected to the convention center would be most convenient for everyone.

Maybe "a" beer would be fine... but yeah, it's expensive. Maybe theyll have a deal this year?

In response to an earlier post of mine, here's a scan of the Fanime 2012 schedule:::
https://mega.co.nz/#!0otyTA5B!f1Vm9GIjVjnVDUGz9uUp0jv-2kUM-DbL_8xd5ejcqlE
I'll go if I'm up! I don't drink though.
I'll go, if I can make it.
I might go. Depends on my cousins. One just turned 21, but I think she would like to go.
When is everyone thinking of doing it?
I'm thinking Friday or Saturday night. If I recall most of the main events where done by 10:00. That should be when everyone has some time to spare.
I'll be in NorCal sometime next month. I'll use some of that time to scout around a few places. If anyone would like to meet up let me know. We can make it a pre-mini-meet.
Im in! I am 20 atm. But May 9th, I turn 21. :D
I went to The Agenda http://www.agendalounge.com/ (http://www.agendalounge.com/)- it was 'ight but i'd like to go to the other ones that arent near the hotels...
So far it seems like the hotel bars are kinda frowned upon, but I checked out the website for Marriott's bar "Tanq" and it looks really cool! Admittedly a bit pricey, but if we can't find anywhere else, at least it's in a convenient location for people who will want to just stumble back to their hotel rooms afterwards, lol :)
Here's the site : http://www.marriott.com/hotel-restaurants/sjcsj-san-jose-marriott/tanq-bar/5218147/home-page.mi (http://www.marriott.com/hotel-restaurants/sjcsj-san-jose-marriott/tanq-bar/5218147/home-page.mi)
They have the menu there in case you want to check out their yummy sounding snacks and specialty drinks :)
Wow a lot of brithdays in May. Guess I'll have to buy you a late brithday shot too.
The Agenda sounds nice, I'll check it out. I been in the Tanq its nice too.
Like you said hotel bars are pricy but its right at the con. I dont want one that is way to far too. Thats why I'm going to see for my self.
For me I can go either way, as long as I have fun with other people thats all that really matters.
I think either The Agenda or Tanq...
Tanq is more expensive, but it's classier and its at-con..
Well I was talking to my roomies about this they said if all else fails we can host the m&g at our room. That's if its not too big.
So there is our back up plan. Just in case no one wants to walk or are too broke... (which is always the case).
I'll add info it plans changes or something else pops up.
I think Tanq has a happy hour too, so if we wanted a cheaper option, that may work? It probably takes place earlier in the evening though, which might overlap with some people's other plans. I wish I could go scope out the possible bars! I live a little far away though. Not too bad, it's just like an hour, maybe an hour and a half in traffic, but I don't have a car of my own so it's hard for me to get over there, lol.
Yes!! Lets do happy hour! I dont wanna spend more than 5 bucks on a drink! >.<
Hmm, I'm not sure the drinks at Tanq are that cheap even during happy hour, lol. On the regular menu, all the drinks are $10 to $13, although they only list the specialty cocktails so beers and well drinks might be cheaper.
Why spend so much on a drink? :S
I dunno, they do sound pretty delicous, lol. I'm checking out the menu right now, they have one called a cherry blossom fizz that sounds amazing, $13 though. I'm sure they have cheaper stuff that isn't on their menu. Like, I can't imagine they'd charge $13 for something standard like a screwdriver or a vodka cran.

Darn it, all these drinks make me wanna drink some right now! >.< The menu did not have a pina colada, one of meh fav drinks. :(
Again, they only list the specialty drinks on the menu. That's how a lot of bars are, but you can ask the bartender for anything you want and I'm pretty sure the non-specialty drinks are cheaper. I can't say for sure since I haven't been there, but that's been my general experience from other bars.
Quote from: Kpmonkeygirl on March 06, 2013, 02:56:59 PM
Why spend so much on a drink? :S
You're paying for the experience at teh bar- not the liquor itself.Bars make their money off charging at least double the norm. You can buy a 30pk of beer for $20, but a beer at a bar will cost you at least $4 at happy hour.
If we want to go the cheap way out, we're gonna have to buy before the con and someone will have to host. From what I gather, most people want hard liquor rather than beer... though beer would be cheaper.
Should we start a new poll as to "if" there becomes a hosting gathering, if there should be beer, liquor or both?
I'd rather go to a bar than just drink in someone's hotel room like a bunch of underage kids though, lol. I know that's the cheapest way to go, but Fanime is a vacation, let's live a little! If everyone's opposed to Tanq, there's gotta be something cheaper close by. Something that's at least within easy walking distance of the con, I hope :)

Eh I don't mind a small drink at a bar for vacation sake, just I know some people won't agree. I saw a few places on yelp, but I am not a big bar person, so I have no frame of reference of what is good. >.<
I'm indifferent as far as what goes on... but either way I'll be comming prepared.
bars near SJCC:
Dive Bar 78 E Santa Clara St, San Jose, CA
(cheap HH and I know the owner)
San Jose Bar & Grill 85 S 2nd St
(more food)
Trials Pub 265 N 1st St
(no tv)
The Loft Bar 90 S 2nd St
(cheap but HH ends at 7)
South First Billiards 420 S 1st St
(Billiards)
Fahrenheit Lounge/Bar 99 E San Fernando S
(Up-scale)
The Agenda 399 S 1st S
(Dance floor)
Personally, The Dive would be best... I'll talk to the owner if they'd have any specials during the duration of the con...
I've never been out drinking in San Jose so I have no idea what the bars are like over there, lol. I saw on google maps there's a British style pub nearby called Brittania Arms, it looked like a fun little place. Anyone been there?
How long would you say the walk is between Dive Bar and sjcc?
I guess ya right on livin a lil, its a vacation. :) But still, it would be nice to save. :/

As a prideful Japanese man of course we shall drink by the means of our new found friendship hahaha (hearty laugh) of course i do have a limitation on how many i am willing to put down :3
I made plans to be in San Jose on the 30th. So I'll start the recon soon. Feel free to join.
The m&g is planed for some time, on, or past 10:00 pm . So any happy hours maybe long gone by then. Also if you plant to eat at the bars the kitchen may or may not be open that late. If it is open then expect a very long wait for food. That's how bars around here work, it may or may not be any different in San Jose. If you do want to eat I recommend eating first before we head out. Bar food is sometimes more expensive than the drinks.
I'll see how it goes.

What are the thoughts on maybe going to 4th St Pizza? They have pizza by the slice for the hungry, a full bar, and beers are reasonably priced.

4th st pizza:::::
thurs: $8 budLt pictures
fri: $7.5 pizza/pint combo
sat: $10 allyoucaneat slices/ $14 blue moon pictures
----------------------------------------------------------
The Dive::::::
sun $4 domestic bottles, $4 drafts, $4 well drinks.
POWER HOUR 10pm to 11pm: $2 wells, $2 PBR Draft
fri $6 Grey Goose, Bombay and Maker's Mark before 9pm
sat $4 drafts and $5 wells from 4pm to 8pm
Wow 4th St Pizza sounds great. Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to check it out.
The owner of The Dive wants to know more about the details(time, how many, etc.) before she organizes anything.
We are not close to enough to make a decision to just one bar. I really don't want to make promises to the bar owner just in case it doesn't happen or we change location I don't want be rude like that.
So for now I'll just add it the list for the recon run. I might just be in San Jose this 16th so we see how it goes.
Any other places you want me to check out just post them up. The more places the better chance we have to find a nice place.
I wish the at-con bars would offer some kind of discount for people attending the con. Like ... free drinks all night every night! LoL. Anyone doing a really sexy cosplay? Maybe someone can charm the bartender into giving us cheap drinks. hehe j/k ;)
Bartenders tend to be used to being targeted for free drinks- it wont work.
Bdays are really the only free drink days.

Looks like my plans for the 30th changed..if its not one thing its another..and I forgot the 17th is St Piddys day... so my plans on the 16 are out..

@echoshadow, I think there's a festival in San Jose's Japan Town sometime in April, that could be a good time to perhaps get a few people together and scout for a good bar, lol
I was thinking that everyone start off with drinks from a bar and then go get pizza/beer after- that way we get the best of both worlds!

Sounds like a fun idea. I'd probably be down depending on what else is going on at the time.

@echo: i can ask a couple of my friends who go to SJSU whats good around there..well relatively good and cheap. they're college students..they should know something LOL
did we ever fully settle a time for this particular meet&greet? and what about the other one? hmm..i shall go browse the forum page
but yea. this all sounds good. we definitely can't set a time or place yet without the schedule out (which hopefully is out sooner rather than later) but brainstorming is always a good idea :D
@princesskitty, yes please ask them. I was like waiting for you to replay with some of your friends recomendations.
By the way things are looking the 21+ m&g could be on Saturday night. That is if everyone would like that day and time.
Ah dont make me rember about the schedule..Fanime sure is dropping the ball. Almost a month and a half to go an zero updates on guest or programing. I recommend everyone post it fb or twitter. Seems like the forums is ignored by the higher ups.

Thursday and Friday is up in the air.
@echoshadow:: could you update the first post?
I like the idea of 2 days of drinking but....I'm pretty sure most of us would like to, and/or could only afford one night of drinking at a bar.
Like Princesskitty said, the time is kind of not set till the schedule comes out..(if ever) so going by last years most of the major events/panles ended by 10:00 pm or so. 6:00 pm is kind of too early to drink also I'll be pretty much be at some event/panel by then. Sunday at 10:00 I'll be out dancing or at finishing up the Masquerade, so its a no go for me.
I'll update the first post with the possible bar list and attendees.
For what it's worth, I'd prefer Friday or Saturday night as opposed to Sunday, since 2 of my friends are leaving Sunday evening and wouldn't be able to come :)
I wonder if we should just pick a different place for each night of the con and make it kind of like ... choose which one(s) you want to go to type of thing?
I'm over 21 but don't drink :(
I'd be interested!

Both of you can have iced tea :]
Yeah, I'd enjoy an Anime gathering over iced tea! Who's in??
This sounds interesting and while living in downtown San Jose for some time, I have become familiar with most of these places. I can offer some feedback:
1. Dive Bar
- The crowds are "eclectic" to say the least but I will admit the only time I've ever visited, the atmosphere was a bit "dark." Music is fairly loud when the DJ is playing, so unless you plan on yelling, conversations may be limited. Basic Bar and stool setup with some tables.
2. Tanq in Marriott
- This place is located right in the Lobby area of the Marriot, slightly smaller than most others but the Bar area is surrounded by big open areas of glass that expose the outside area, making it look larger. It has some lounge style seats in the corner rear area and the music is a standard top 40 mix of mashups and remixes. This is going to be the place where most Con Attendees of drinking age (who drink) will be. Its comfortable, convenient (located right in the Con) and The Fish Bowl (also known as the "Kiss The Fish" drink) is a fun 2 or more drink that you can share with multiple people.
3. San Jose Bar & Grill
- Great place to go on a Friday or Saturday night if youre looking for a lively crowd. Sports oriented most nights with the big screens playing the game or fight of choice. There is a small dance floor and on Fridays and Saturdays the DJ is usually spinning top 40. A bit of a walk from the convention center but a little loud for conversations and introductions.
4. South First Billiards
- If youre looking for a very relaxing night shooting pool and neandering around, this isn't a bad spot. Music is on a Jukebox most of the time and the drinks are simple, its more of a Beer option in my opinion. A bit of a walk as well with a more "mature" atmosphere.
5. 4th St Pizza
- A mainstream eatery if you will and sports oriented for the most part. A basic pizza joint for college kids looking for beer pong and basic convo. Not a bad choice if you dont mind the walk.
6. Gordon Biersch
- As the name infers, they do serve alcohol but it's definitely a Brewery and Restaraunt combo. Good for sit downs and dining with a beer but it's not what I would consider "lively for youths."
7. Flames Eatery & Bar
- Flames is definitely a place to check out if youre looking for a active social atmosphere coupled with food and an array of acoholic options. It is a sit down style restaraunt but it does have a bar. Music is usually fairly loud even though it is a restaraunt but not too bad. Alot of party kids preparing for the club usually or looking to hang out before the next event in the evening. Younger crowd, usually College kids. No dress code but you may find a few people dressed up in preparation for a night on the town.
8. Los Gatos Brewing Co.
- Like Gordon Biersch but they're hometown heroes, restaraunt/brewery combo. A bit far for my taste if your looking for a bar. It's okay but if you're looking for shots and a party atmosphere, this isnt the place.
9. Lounge in The Fairmont
- I've had a drink here before but it's kind of expensive because they're catering to travelers and looking to maintain an "upscale" image. Even during Con season, it's less than lively for the younger crowd but can still be cool to try out. For what you are looking to accomplish with this meetup, I would'nt recommend it as a first choice but maybe "Plan C."
There you have it but these are only my personal opinions and observations. Everyone is different and some of these places may be right up some of your alleys but I tried to keep things in a general review style format. My personal choice would be "Tanq" in the Marriott based on its location, atmosphere and selection.
I don't know if I can make this event but it looks like you guys are getting a pretty decent crowd. I'm sure it will be fun!
I'd be totes in - depending on the size of the group, I'd also suggest Singlebarrel for drinks, even if it's really pricey (10-12/drink), I think it's absolutely worth it. Unfortunately, max group size is 6 people, and it's more of a speakeasy rather than a dive/sports bar.

I'm pretty sure money is a big factor for most of us...
Wow, thanks for your wonderful research! I'll show up wherever you guys agree upon. Thanks again!
Alright, seeing as I have more time, (busy planing/attending Anime Conji) I added a poll to the first post.
Vote for which bar we should have the m&g at.
@Jesse Uppercut, thanks soo much that really does help out.

try to switch places with someone for 1 hr? ;_;
Lol well you could join us when you take your "lunch" brake.
So what's everyone's top 3 picks? Mine's The Dive, 4th St Pizza and Tanq.
I went to Gordon Biersch last week but didnt stay- food is too much for my wallet. It's also very quiet.
Doesn't really matter much to me where we meet as long as it's with nice people. Still, my top 3 would be Tanq, 4th Street Pizza or Gordon Biersch, in that order.
My top 3 are Flames Eatery & Bar, San Jose Bar & Grill, and 4th St Pizza.
Hmm I might possibly be able to do that!!!
I hadn't thought about doing that because I usually don't take lunches~
looks like things are coming together nicely
sorry echo for not really being much help XD
i did ask a couple of my sanjo friends but they dont go out that often hahaha
and ive been super busy wit graduation and family issues and watnot
im glad that someone was able to do the research (shoutouts to jesse uppercut)
im down for almost whatever. ive done a lot of walking so distance doesn't bother me too much XD
Hey all :) I'd love to greet & meet you guys at Tanq or Flames.
@princesskitty, no worries it is coming long nicely.
@tinyhotdog, glad to hear, see you there.
I kind wish there where two voting options seeing as there more interest in more than one bar.
Depending on the day/location I might come! All my friends who normally go to Fanime are still under 21 so I'd love to be with a group.
My friend and I will meet you guys up wherever the final decision is. :D
I've always kinda wanted to just sit down and chat with people at the Marriot's Bar, now i may actually have some people to talk with.
I'd like to join but it depends on the time/date!
This will be my first Fanime and I only have a few friends going but would like to meet you guys!
I'll stay in touch, but count me in!
Also-
I don't mind where we go :D
Drinks, then food or the other other way around?
Doesn't matter to me!
Sonds great fellas, I think Saturday night will be a good time. But that will depens once the schedule comes out. And by the looks of it will come out the days before Fanime starts.
Meow, I'll confess, I only read page 1 and the last page, so I don't know what kind of info has been flying around.
My take:
- Saturday is awesome bc that's the day where there are the most people attending Con. We could always make an annoucement or have a sign about the m&g, because, like someone mentioned, not too many people are on these forums.
- I feel the same way with whoever it was that said they're used to SF drink prices, same here. I don't feel like it's that expensive a the hotel bars, plus it's super close. But that's just me. Although the Bar is pretty small.
- Best nightlife is SJ would be at Santana Row, but that's ways away from downtown; It's probably best to stick to downtown where people can just get to by walking
- Room Party, we had a room party at the Fairmont (non-Fanime related) and I think we had about 20+ people in the room? Probably more like 30, but I wasn't really keeping count lol
- Bar....are we looking for a more food & chill bar, or for a club? I noticed you didn't list any club or lounges so probably not those lol
- Let's see...Dive Bar is fun. The billard place isn't bad. Pizza one is more for grabbing a beer, it's a bit small so if we have a sizable group it'll take up the whole place (which would be awesome). Flames is a bar, but it's more of a restaurant than a bar by the library (breakfast is amazing there). I like Gordon Biersch...for my own bias reasons (mini desert shooters hehehe), it's a beer and American food place. Los Gatos Brewing Co is similar to Gordon Biesch, the whole brew and food thing. San Jose Bar & Grill is more of the Bar scene on the weekends, and they have sofas! LOL there you go, a lil blurb about everything.
If everyone just wants to grab a drink and get to know each other, then I think going to the hotel lounges work the best. If people want food and drinks then everything else (I particularly like the dive bar and the last 3).
Whee!!
No need to make this overly complicated. I think Tanq is the best solution for the meet up. I mean, the point isn't to necessarily just eat/drink but rather to get to hang out together :)
Well I think the OP provided a number of options bc he/she was considering
1) Most people will probably want food
2) People's budget
which I personally think was thoughtful of them.
The Tanq is great in that it's right there, so less walking around for people in elaborate outfits (yay!).
The thing though is that it's really small. I'm not sure how many people are coming to this? But when ~20 friends and I dropped by after a game, it was pretty cramped. And by cramped I mean that place is more "a few lonely people from up stairs chilling by themselves at the bar, hoping to meet another lonely soul for the night" ish, than for a gathering. We just ended taking up all the side lounge benches and the closer seats at the bar, provided some of us just sat/laid on other people...yeah my friends are kind of wacky haha.
The Fairmont lounge nearby is a lot more spacious, but they might be having a music event on Saturday where the middle of the lounge becomes a dance floor, at which point I just get way too distracted to listen to anyone. It's so comfy there, you end up just wanting to sit, enjoy your drink, take in the light jazz, and not really walk around to meet anyone.
::shrugs:: I actually don't mind where ever you guys decide to go. I mean it's downtown for God's sake, on a weekend. Clubs and bars Galore. Heck we could all head over to Singlebarrel if anything haha.

Well....I kind of just thought the point was to drink and socialize, I really didn't plan to make it an eat & drink meet up, since it becomes a bit of a hassle ordering food.
From my past exprience with AX's 21+ m&g, once we had a fill of liquor then we kind of go with the flow, if people want to eat we'll go eat, if people want to go dancing we'll go dancing, if people wanted to bar crawl we went crawling.
But till then well cross that brigde when we come to it.
Freaking BYOB man, I'll be in the parking lot with my trunk full of booze. Everything's mobile these days lol.
JK. Seems like I'll be working (although OP doesn't think it's work) quite a bit on Saturday, so I might be too busy to go. If you go to Tanq, get the fish drink! It's awesome.
My non-fanime friends are visiting that weekend. Chances are we're hitting SB late at night on Saturday for me to channel my 1920's Flapper vibes. If you don't know what to do late at night in SJ, come find us. I'll be the one staring at the hot waitresses/bartenders :D
I think the most important thing for me is being able to easily stumble back to my room in case I drink a little too much, lol. I'm a bit of a lightweight.

LOL, I did thought about a byob party but..seems like we'll be having a few minors in our room or something like that, so I'll just have to wait and see till con time.
And I do have a name besides "OP", and yes I don't think its work....since you have fun while doing it, and fyi everyone stares at any hot waitress/bartenders.
There is still a few more weeks till the con so we still have time to plan it out. Just keep checking back or post more suggestions or ideas.

Is it really fun tho...I just run around constantly. But I'm a people person, so I love meeting new people :) I would say it's perhaps more fun than my job at Stanford, working in the lab and with cancer patients, but I'm a science soul, so I love that too. Unfortunately, not that much talking and the other "young" person who works there is about 20 yrs older than me. And with the data analysis work I just do that at home while munching on cupcakes, yelling happy thoughts at squirrels. And then modeling is a lot of long hours of posing, smiling, and walking down the runway. God, what am I doing with my life? Hahahaha
lalalalalalalalalalalallalalalala
~MASSIVE SECRET REVEAL~ Oh also, I don't drink. I like to stay sober to keep stalkers at bay, mostly because if I was intoxicated I would prolly hurt them...bad. Yeah....everyone has their angry, bloodlust, vicious demons right? ::smiles::
I feel like a lot of people are leaning towards Tanq? Well the upside is it's right there. Drinks are a bit pricey, so just get one drink during the m&g, and then afterwards, if you still want to drink, migrate to a bar (or room) with your new friends in toll.
Nice! I have no idea how I hadn't thought of this before. Depending on scheduling I may or not be able to make it and hopefully bring a few people with me ;) as long as you all don't mind a few more?

No! OP is OP!
See if I drink, I can't go back to work. I don't like half-ass drinking, so when I do drink I go all out. Which is apparently a lot (must be my German side).
So, if anyone is having a hard time stumbling around, I got chu!

Because my job is important lol. You can't really just call off medical research, waste millions of dollars, and leave your cancer patients who are already dealing with a ton of problems to also deal with your irresponsibility. Frankly, between roaming Fanime and my research job, I would pick my research job any day. So even if I am still staffing, my work gets priority. It's 24/7. I even canceled my past NYE plan to stay in when my lab needed last minute data analyzed for one of my patients to have surgery the following day. Grown up problems.
And with staffing...you can't really take days off staffing....bc you have to work your hours. I like to have fun, but I also don't make commitments I can't keep. And I certainly wouldn't compromise my professionalism with substances that are just harming my body anyways.
And that is why I am not taking any days off of work.

I am a grown up. I have an important job. But I also make sure to not let my job define me.
Life is too short as it is. From what you wrote, surely you know this statement is true more than most people. I admire your dedication. I do. But I have found that it is good to pull away at times, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and do something else. I look forward to Fanime because it allows me to do just that.
When I return to work I find that I am refreshed and I actually tackle my tasks with renewed energy and I do a better job.

Second this. Substantially.
Well obviously fanime is for fun, like I said. Which is why I'm taking time away from work to go to it.
And if dedicating my life to helping others and forwarding science defines my life....then I'd like to say hell yeah it does.
Plus, I'm not even at work that often so I spend the rest of my time being crazy with my friends, hosting charity events, and modeling was fun but I'm bored with it now.
Life is too short to just waste your time on nothing. I live my life doing what I want to do.

Beer wise I perfer a brown or amber ale. Wine wise I like a more fruty wine like a blush. Never really liked the reds or the whites. As for liqour, I'm more of a brandy/cognac guy. It has to be 18+ year old vsop.
So let me hear yours.

I'm not so much a beer or wine drinker, I usually go for cocktails :) Long Islands are kind of my default drink cause they're pretty strong so I get a good buzz from just 1 or 2. I also love Vodka + Red Bull. When I'm not looking to get too buzzed, I like fruity drinks, like a Dirty Shirley which is vodka, sprite and grenadine. Ooh! And I tried this new drink for the first time a couple weekends ago, it was called a Washington Apple and it was super yummy! Served in a shot glass. It was recommended to me because I wanted "something like a lemon drop but not a lemon drop" lol.
I dislike beer and i can taste liquor in the majority of mixed drinks, so i take shots of liquor at the start and then spend the rest of my night nursing my impending hangover.
I'm fine with beer (IPA, Porter) but I'm also down for shots. Probably get some black russian and vader!

Havent had a black russian or vader... I like martinis though. I tend to drink liquor straight.
Beer is always better from an actual brewery so if its not the case I'll usually stick to shocktops or maybe flat tire, but Amstel is pretty good too. Coronas are only for if I am in Mexico.
Wine I like a bit of everything but usually not for bars that aren't specifically wine bars. It's more of a with your meal drink to me.
Tequila is a dear dear friend and gin and vodka are also great companions. Usual cocktails are sazerac, sidecar, G and t, and when I'm feeling boring vodka cran. But often I pull my drinks off the bars specialty menu and try new(ish) things. It's also pretty normal for me to ask bartenders for something that will taste like (insert flavor) and I end up with some awesome concoctions that way.
Usually most of the more refined liqueurs hold their place as an after dinner drink to me so I don't demean them with nights when I'm just drinking.
I will not touch hypnotic for the forseeable future. I got way to drunk off of way too many of a drink that had that as the most prevalent taste.

Last year for a friend's pokemon themed b'day party (yes, we're in our 20's and still think pokemon themed parties are awesome, lol) I came across TheDrunkenMoogle.com and used their recipes for a Blastoise cocktail, a Charizard cocktail, and a Venusaur cocktail, lol. I didn't care much for the Blastoise and the Charizard, but the Venusaur was awesome. We played this pokemon drinking game

I don't remember how it turned out ... I was pretty unlucky with my rolls and had to chug like 3 drinks by the time we reached the first gym, hahaha. I'm kind of a lightweight, but gradually getting better ^^;

Holy crap that's the same game I got totally wasted and doomed hypnotic to me to! We had this huge thing about getting all of the starter Pokemon figurines as game pieces and we settled on making dratinis off thedrunkenmoogle all night! We did not finish the game.

LoL we got a lamenated one too! hahaha. Haven't played it since that first time though ... we made the mistake of playing it with pretty strong drinks and I think it's meant more for beers or something, lol. What kind of drinks do you use to play?
I may go, depends on what my friend do I have gone to this convention for 4 years but for my friends it's their first time soo... depending on the schedule of fanamie and them not to sure. However it does sound fun, I most likely wont really drink I dislike alot of bar drinks xD

First time I heard anyone say that.
You don't have to order what everyone drinks, just drink what ever tase good to you. I myself never like a classic martini, or budwiser. But you'll never know which drink combo you'll like if you never try.

Have you tried a drink called a Dirty Shirley? It's really just a Shirley Temple (sprite and grenadine) with a little vodka added to the mix. It tastes just like a yummy cherry soda! It was the only drink I really liked when I first started drinking, cause it's not very strong ^_^
Peach Schnapps and orange juice is a good starter cocktail.

what about sour skittles? also, did you leave them in too long?
I got a group of people who like to take part in libations, so count us in! I'll keep an eye on this post to see what the final decision is.
I read some posts about being on a budget. Just come anyway as I'm sure you'll find plenty of generous people. I know I am one when I'm having fun! Lol.

Hi, new best friend!!
Hahaha, jk, good point though. Even if you're on a budget, you can at least get one drink and who knows, maybe make some friends who don't mind sharing! ^^
If you're on a budget, you could always just by beer by the picture >.>

Lol. Beer is like 4 bucks. Start getting them quarters if you have to!
With just a few days to go I just want to remind everyone that the meet up is going to be on Saturday night around 10:00 maybe 11:00 or when the majority of the main events are over.
Also keep in mind we are going to a bar so expect to pay bar prices instead of supermarket prices. So stash away a $20 bill or two.

make it about 11-ish. i think the nerd courting panel is that night from 9-12 and i know that its usually a popular panel. i know that im goin haha but depending on where everyone ends up, my boyfriend and i can probly just meet up wit y'all later on
So whats the plan?
10 - 2? Is Tanq open that late? On the hotel's site it says that Tanq closes at 12. But maybe they'll have extended hours since there's a special event going on?

If they close on us(which i dont think they will due to all the business they'll be getting cuz of the event), we could just head to the next cheapest/closest place... the 10-2 is basically that the last of the main attractions end at 10pm and state cutoff drinking time is at 2am.
Sweet. So the Marriott is connected to the convention center, right?
They'll probably have tons of people there anyway, which is good. We'll pick up tons of stragglers for wherever the next destination will be.
I look forward to sharing a couple (sure, uh huh) of drinks with y'all.
I'm interested. This sounds like fun.
I came up with the idea of everyone doing something to distinguish themselves from non-congoers, but I'm 98% sure that everyone who'll be there will already be congoers. So it'd be pointless.

We can do what everyone at AX's 21+ m&g, we wear our badge. I'll be wearing mine.

I thought that was a natural thing that didnt have to be discussed... plus, I dunno if any bars will give discounts to congoers... dont think so but still

Past years they closed even earlier then 12 for some odd reason during Fanime....
Koji Sake bar ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/koji-sake-lounge-san-jose ) is fun to visit when in full cosplay, but it is a couple blocks away and the further you go the higher the risk of encountering Creepers
Flames has late night happy hour ( 9pm-close 7 days a week), but its bar is so tiny. More then 10 people will make that very very cramped
Los Gatos Brewing Company (LGBC) closes really early, like when they stop serving food at like 10pm. The bartender/waitresses are really nice though. Just do not dress up as a zombie, apparently a few of them got super scared during the zombie pub crawl lol
sometimes tells me if I go, I'm gonna get carded :P

you should totally go! :D us rovers gotta stick together!
Oooh, 21 and up party! I will have to try and pull the little 21 and up group I will probably be hanging out with in this direction. I will be in Cosplay, so I'll stand out as an attendee. I'll either be Haku Ha or Belial from Angel Sanctuary.
this sounds fun~ I might drop by to meet some new people if things pan out well enough ^^, I'll probably be there as Succubus from Vindictus
Alright ladys and gentes, we are set for Saturday at the Tanq around 10:30ish~11:00 pm.

For thoese with smart phones just check this thread for any last minute updates.
This already sounds like its going to be a success! Even though Saturday is jam packed, I will try and stop by for a drink!
Hi everyone...looks like Sat is planned.

Sorry I couldn't make it. Stuff came up D:
Thanks to the people that where at meet up at 10:30-11:00 even though they had no idea there was a meet up planed for that night and time. Sadly I don't think they even know these forums existed.
Well, what can I say that wasn't said before and repeatally. The Tanq is close by and it is expensive but everyone voted for it. Oh wells
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
Key notes for future meet ups.
1. Have a set maker, some that everyone can see. Example a dude with a funny red hat and neon green shrit.
2. Have a dead set group of people that will be there. Kind of a sure way to get the party started.
3. Kind of hard to say..but don't listen to any broke college students.
4. Have a room party instead.
5. You'll have good turn out if you tell random people during the con not before.
That being said, till some other day, some other time.
