We have gone back and forth about his and it is my feeling that;  In playing it, its clearly an homage to the game style that came out of Japan in the 80's and 90's.  To me Fanime should be honoring anime, its style, and culture.  We should not get hung up on the geographic location or cultural/racial background of its creators.  With that I am announcing that Undertale is a qualifying source for the masquerade entries

Hi all,

For years there has been confusion on what is the masquerade? What is the cosplay spectacular? How is this different from cosplay gatherings?  Why is this different from X conventions costume contest?  Where is it?  What is it about?

So I have decided that a much clearer, normalized name is needed.  This event will be called the 'FanimeCon Masquerade Cosplay Contest' or the Masquerade for short.

What is the 'FanimeCon Masquerade Cosplay Contest'?
It is a live stage performance and costume contest in which contestants present their best looks and skits to battle for prizes.

What should you expect?
Great theatrical performances, amazing costumes and creative takes on the latests anime, games and timeless classics.  Come and see watch the show.

You want to be in the show?
Here is what you need:
- Your own cosplay (this means no store bought or commissioned costumes, please.)
- Music (if you need help, we will help)
- A vision for what you want to be seen as on stage.  (if you need help, we will help)

We have 50 confirmed contestants

Registration will continue till the Saturday at the convention and we will maintain a waiting list of 15 entries over the 55 slots we have.  If you end up on the waiting list the form will tell you when you sign up.  If we receive more then 70 entries we will close registration entirely.  Once we have our final run list you will get a performance number, this starts with a Letter A or B and indicates which block you will be in, it also shows the order in which you will go on stage and on Sunday its the only number that should matter.  You will get a badge with your number on it and be introduced to your den mom/dad that will be taking care of you for the show.

Midnight Saturday May 16th three new web based forms will go live:

  • Craftsmanship Judging form - This form must be filed out prior to Fanime, to be considered for Craftsmanship awards; This allows the judges to be prepared for entry.
  • Tech Request form - This is a detailed tech request form and contains information on the capabilities of our stage, size to allow you to best utilize the stage for your entry.  Next year there will be online videos showing what these lighting effects look like.
  • Craftsmanship Judging Appointment Request -  This allows you to optionally request a private review with craftsmanship judges on Saturday.  Appointments can be made from 1:00pm to 3:00pm (if we need additional slots we will extend this time).  This is optional, you can also be judged on site, but it allows for more time and to review your construction while not wearing it.

Next communications:

In the next few days you will receive the following:

  • Your entry number - This will have an 'A' or 'B' followed by a number and will indicate the order your entry will go on stage.  If you have any special requests on where you would like your entry to appear, please contact me. Come Sunday of Fanime, this is the only number you will care about.
  • Practice Room Request form - This form will allow you to book practice room space from the following times (Note: this is the Blossom Hill ballroom, not the civic stage)
  •        - Friday 1:00pm  to 8:00pm, .
  •        - Saturday 10:00am to 12:00 and 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
  • Extra Stage Rehearsal Request form - This form will allow you to request pre-rehearsal time on the civic stage.  These run from 9:30am to 12:00 noon and there are only 20 slots. Mandatory dress rehearsals begin promptly afterward. So you will walk the stage once before your performance.
  • MC appointment requests - Our distinguished Master of Ceremonies Tadao Tomomatsu may contact you to make an appointment to go over specific pronunciations and if you are using a script, details on tone, timing and the like.  This is at this discretion, however he will speak to each of you the day of the masquerade.
  • Reminders - If we have not received your Music, releases or other forms, we will reach out and check in with you.

Thank you all,

Big Event Showcase / Anime theme rule
May 03, 2015, 03:24:57 PM
To address a few posts:

I will try to be transparent as possible around the logic I am using and how it plays out.  I would like to move this to a different thread though.

Background :

The rules currently stand at:
Quote
6.   All entries must be based on the following requirements:
       •   Asian film, such as characters from 13 Assassins (Japan) or The Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate (China),  47 Ronin
       •   Asian animation, such as the Japanese animation Naruto, the Korean animation Wonderful Days, Asian inspired anime like Big Hero 6.
       •   Asian comics, such as the Japanese Fairy Tail, Korean Breaker, or Chinese Story of the Tao, or
       •   Asian-origin video game, such as Final Fantasy or Ragnarok Online, or Street fighter
       •   Asian music stars (such as Girls' Generation).
       •   Asian-inspired sources; including your own inspiration, such as an Avatar.
       •   The rule of thumb is: if the series and/or character originated anywhere else than the Pacific, it doesn't qualify. If you aren't sure, ask [email protected]

KuriQueenofFeels

QuoteI'm also concerned about the "grey area" of the masquerade. I have a few video game characters, 2/3 are of Asian descent, the other is american. But since they're altogether in one skit, I think It'll be fine. Any Thoughts?

The race of the characters is less of a concern as the origin or feel of the work.  Aforementioned Full Metal Alchemist as an example. in recent years most anime comming out of Japan and Korea seems to have predominantly american looking characters, but are clearly works created from or to these markets.

A good grey area is Big hero 6, it is a american franchise, based off (in very small part) a Marvel property, but its a clearly Asia themed source.  My view is I would include it, its not a avengers / Star Trek or Matrix with an undertone of a western prospective and style, its a, often comically, styled anime motion picture.

Ok, so I wasn't going to bring this issue up, considering it actually would make me and my friend disqualified, but. When the heck has the Asian only media rule ever actually been put into place? I know for a fact over the years there has been non asian inspired cosplays entered in the masquerade, and they have won major awards at that. I could understand it as a 'preference' to have asian only, but having it restricted to only that does seem a little crazy with how the actual convention seems to go with cosplays/ media and such.

I think the clear understanding is that if a cosplay is an exception to a rule it needs to be discussed and approved. Perhaps I should be more clear on this, but in general folks ask.  I am limited to what I can talk about this year, because I just ethically can't talk about someones cosplay before they have a chance to show it, however one of them is from a clear US game property that had a very much Asia themed elements and even a clear desire to embrace it.  Ensuring this is clear in the presentation is enough for me to quality the performance. Examples of other rules which exceptions are made for: Time limits, music requirements, and number of people on the stage.

A ten plus years ago there was no question if you brought a cosplay to an anime convention it was 99% likely related to an anime theme.  However as the rise in popularity of cosplay and conventions in general has grown the blending and in some cases the over saturation of general or popular media has caused people to want to push back and preserve more of the anime feel.

On the flip side I understand where you are coming from, the vast majority of my cosplays are not anime focused because frankly there are very few stocky white guy characters in the current crop of titles. I also complete at ComicCons, Dr who conventions and the like, so I see first hand some of the amazing cosplays out there that don't qualify.

Enkai

QuoteIt doesn't have to be planned before Fanime, though it could be, but I dunno, something like how it was before.  When we checked in on Friday or Saturday, we said what our preference was as to when we wanted to perform (my group at the time usually liked to be between groups 5-12 or so), and preference was given to whoever checked in first.  While that order might get shifted in rehearsal when discoveries were made about how costumes/routines interacted in the schedule (I remember a Black Lady cosplay moving her skit when she discovered she was preceded by another Black Lady cosplay at rehearsal), those were the exceptions not the rule.

I don't see any issue with your preference and how we are planning on scheduling the run book.  There are tweaks I do make to balance out long running skits, to many back to back tends to make them forgettable and also the audience impatient.  You already brought up the duplicate franchise issue, but there is also how much room to stage a large group.  Its much more efficient to not have 4 8 person groups back to back.  So some discretion is used, but it in no way means that compromises can not be made.

Lets continue

Hi all,

I know that we have been having some gaps in communication so I wanted to address then here and in emails to each contestant.

We have 41 confirmed contestants and Three more I am working with to clear some hurdles around the Asia content rules.

Your groups primary contact should now have a DropBox invitation in their inbox for uploading the files.   You can make changes to your entry all the way up to Saturday night.  please email me the changes when you have them finalized.

If you are having trouble with music, lights and tech or other parts of your performance we can help.  Please email us any queries questions and we will help or advise you as best we can.||

Reminders:
a member of your team must appear in person at the masquerade table(located on the main level of the convention center next to gatherings)  prior to Sunday and sign in.

One last note:
Please do not file more then one request.  a few nervous folks filed many and it just takes considerably  longer for me to sort through.

Judging:
Our panel of judges is empowered to make independent decisions on the awarding or prizes and recognition and is selected from the cosplay community to judge cosplayers.  Each has their own unique skill and background and work collectively to determine awards.

<<link to judges bio>>

Judging rules:
•   All Display Entries (walk-ons) must be judged for Craftsmanship
•   Performance groups can choose to be judged (optional).
•   All submissions for craftsmanship judging must submit a Craftsmanship Judging Form. <<link to craftsmanship judging form>>
•   Judges have the option of not awarding a category award because of insufficient competition.  If there is only one dance performance then how can it be judged?
•   Awards can be retracted if competitors are found to knowingly violate the competition rules by making false claims or deliberately not attributing the maker.
Make sure you read and understand the judging rules (see below).

Craftsmanship judging rules:
1.   PARTISIPATION: All Craftsmanship judging participants must also be approved entries for Masquerade and must participate (with a presentation or a walk-on) in Masquerade
2.   ELIGIBILITY: All Costumes are eligible for Craftsmanship Judging but mandatory for Display Entries.
3.   REQUIRED FORMS:  You must fill out a Craftsmanship Judging Form
4.   JUDGING TIMES:  If you registered for Craftsmanship judging, you need to:
       a.   Present your costume(s) for judging prior to the start of the Masquerade at the designated time assigned to you.
       b.   There will only be limited craftsmanship judging at the event.
       c.   Every contestant needs to be prepared to answer the judges' questions about his/her role in the construction of their costume
5.   GROUP CONSTRUCTION:
      a.   If the entire group designed and constructed the costumes together and if you wish to win a group craftsmanship award, you must be judged as a group and all members of the group must be judged at the same time
      b.   If only one person in your group made all of the costumes, only that person is eligible for an award. He or she must be a participating costumed member of your group.
6.   INDIVIDUAL CONSTRUCTION:
      a.   An individual (or a member of a group being judged as an individual) must have designed or constructed his/her own costume by himself/herself to win an Individual Craftsmanship Award.
      b.   An individual that designed and created all of the costumes for a group is eligible for an individual Craftsmanship award. He or she must be a participating costumed member of the group.
7.   DOCUMENTATION:  The Craftsmanship Judges recommend that each competitor bring the following:
       a.   At least one color picture, preferably two, of each character the costume entry represents.
       b.   Source Documentation on the character
       c.   The judges also appreciate craftsmanship documentation (also known as costume construction diaries)
For additional information, see the Craftsmanship Judging Form.

Performance Rules
You must adhere to the following performance rules:

1.   Don't wear or use any substances that might ruin the costume of another contestant. If you are wearing body paint or make-up, make sure it will not come off in casual contact with others.
2.   Do not leave anything on the stage that cannot be picked up by the stage ninjas in a few seconds.
3.   Costumes must be self-contained. Connections to electrical sockets will not be available.
4.   Nothing is allowed that would be banned in a "PG-13"-rated film. Actions, dress, or mannerisms that would not be allowed on a public street or thoroughfare must be avoided. Specifically, the following must be avoided: explicit sexual gestures, nudity, and explicit swearing. Violating these rules will disqualify you and possibly result in your being escorted off the stage.
5.   No fire, flash powder, high power lasers, explosives or open flame of any kind will be allowed.
a.   Electronic flashes will be permitted provided that you notify the Masquerade Director in advance, and it must be announced in your MC introduction to protect those who might be affected by the flashing lights.

7.   The MC will read the name of the entry, the names of the contestants, and a short introduction.
8.   Any narration to be read by the MC will be limited to 35 words or less and a read must be done prior to the start of the performance
9.   There are only two acceptable exits – Stage Left and Stage Right.

This is a report of the website, please forgive the formatting.

Line
This year we will be using a fast pass line system.  This change is to prevent people from sitting outside in line for long hours in the San Jose hot weather.  Our goal is to only require that patrons stand in line a maximum of 15 minutes prior to being seated and to allow you to have more time to enjoy FanimeCon.

Stickers will be placed on your badge at the front entrance to the San Jose Civic auditorium; the color will indicate the order in which your block will be brought into the civic auditorium.  Please come by the front of the civic << see map>> between 8am and 3:30 Sunday to get a colored sticker on your badge.

Those with physical disabilities are welcome to come to the civic as early as 3:15 and come directly into the air-conditioned lobby.  You and one companion will be seated before the line blocks.

Line Rules:
1.   You must be present with your own badge to get a sticker at the entrance to the civic where a staff member will stamp your hand and put the current sticker on your badge.
2.   Stickers are first come, first serve when the first block stickers runs out then the we will move to the next color.
3.   No reserving of seats until the last line block has been loaded and you have been told to make yourself comfortable.
4.   At 3:45 block lines will form up under the color of the sticker you have on your badge
5.   Transferring stickers to other attendees will invalidate your place in line.  Hand stamps and stickers must match.  We recommend you come with your friends to get your stickers
6.   After all line blocks are loaded the door open to any other attendees.

Audience rules:
1.   Photography and video is allowed – but only as long as it does not interfere with others enjoyment of the show.  If you stand up, hold your camera up at arms length above your head or have your screen to bright, the ushers will warn you.
2.   No flash photography. Period.  It is not only unenjoyably for those around you but is a safety hazard for people on stage.
3.   No reserving of seats until the last line block has been loaded and you have been told to make yourself comfortable.
4.   Be respectful of the MC, a little bit of fun is one thing. But if you start being part of the show, we will ask you to leave.

Panels and Workshops / mens tailoring workshop
March 18, 2015, 02:05:37 PM
Would people be interested in a class to go over key construction techniques for mens suit of uniform construction.  This would go from fabrics, under structure, interfacing and stitching to pressing, arm synth, collar and lapel attachment.  It would take about two hours or have to be broken up to a multi block panels.

What do you think?

Proposal: Historical or recreation competition

I've been toying with this idea for a while and a resent post prompted me to bring it up. This competition would be heavily skewed to craftsmanship and the details of a costumes construction.  This would be roughly split between media (modern sources) and historical (based on historical documentation and accounts before 1940).  All of this must be from asia or asia inspired sources.

The competition would require dress diaries/ tailor journals of the construction details and supported documentation. The room itself would have a low riser and runway platform that would allow the audience to admire the garments up close and the wearer would be able to have up to 3 minutes to display with lengthly narration from the MC or a recorded narration.

We would use the same Open, Journeyman, Novice, Professional devisions.

To be clear, this is not for displaying vintage (actual garments from that era) garments.  You may use vintage accessories, but they will not be part of the judging of your entry.

WHat are your thought?

1) would you be tempted into competing?

2) would you want to attend and see the competition?

3) Do you think this is a welcome addition to Fanime?

4) ideas, thoughts, concerns?
