Title: Cosplay Spectacular 2013
Post by: Dany on March 07, 2013, 08:06:50 PM
Any news on this? i am a bit surprised that we are into March and there has not yet been anything that I was able to pull up for this year on it. We will not be participating this year (need some downtime for other project stuff) but I know others are probably wondering what the plan is.

I was going to make a post asking this same question today... any word on who is running it or at least if there is going to be one this year?? It isn't easy pulling together a skit not knowing if we will even be able to perform it.  I hope we will hear something soon!

While I do not have exact details, I can confirm that it's being worked on.

Hello Eveyone! Sorry for the delays on updates about the Masquerade, first off there will be one this year  ;D and we will be posting registration information by March 25th. Thank you for being patient with us; if you have any questions please post them and I will try to answer them as quickly as possible.

I had a question about badges for Masquerade, since this will be my first Fanime.  I'll be applying for a professional badge since I'm part of a press site.  I've heard mixed about Pro badges and Masquerade, would I need to purchase a day badge or similar in order to compete?  Thanks!

Hello,

I saw that you mentioned that the registration would be posted by march 25, but if you know already, have any of the rules changed from last year that would be important to know? Such as did the time limit change or any weapon rules that are specific for the Cosplay Spectacular?

Thank you very much!

Hello Hello,

So there hasn't been much change to the rules the only one we decided to alter is the "Asian Only " rule ; we are going to allow Asian influenced comic , animation, video game inspired skits. If you have anymore questions please ask ;).

[Edit by MPLe: I have edited this post. Please see my post below for more information.]

SO registration goes up TODAY? WHERE AND WHEN will we be notified of this happening? this seems like VERY late notice.

When will the times be posted and place to register online? i agree with az in that this is really late notice

Information on HOW to register will be going up as early as today with a date and time of when the event's registration WILL be opening. I'll update this post as soon as that information is put up on the website.

If I'm not mistaken masquerade registration went up in April of last year... let's all be patient and polite and remember that con staff have a lot on their plates.

I understand that there's a lot on their plates, especially with construction and all, I just panicked when I was the post that said it opened today  :-\ a misunderstanding I suppose. I don't mean to be rude, just panicked and thought I'd have to pull an all nighter, just stress getting to me =,=;
I'm sure everything will end up great in the long run though ^^

I got all excited and thought registration went up today too. ^^; Then I re-read it. I'm just happy that the ball will finally be rolling. I'm pumped to enter this year.

Maybe... can anyone help me with an answer to a question? I'm registered in a group, but I'm not the group leader. and therefore don't have a fanime account for this year...can i still reg for the C.S.?  if so how? do i have to get my group leader to register for me? o.o

unfortunately I dont know anything about the needing to be group leader or anything but if I had to guess I dont think you have to be. I feel as long as you have a badge and register for the event it should be fine, but I could be wrong.

maybe you guys can help me out though. Does anyone know the size of the stage? my friend and I are trying to get our footing and distance down but its kind of hard to do not knowing the dimensions we have to work with.

if it's anything like last year they'll have a practice space the size of the stage that you'll be free to work with, I know that doesn't really help you in the meantime but it's better than finding out when you go on for your performance.

Is there any word on who the coordinator is, or plans to announce who's taken up the role?

I have a question, my group is thinking of borrowing a suit from another cosplayer, i dont know whether the original cosplay bought or made the cosplay. the character/cosplay would be worn by a handler/"stage" ninja to merely blend into the skit and go unnoticed. would this still be a disqualification? if so I can always back out from borrowing this suit and cut the handler from the "background" of the skit. we dont want this cosplay judged in anyway, just dont want to have to use a stage ninja that stands out and distracts from the skit

Hi Everyone,

So hopefully you have already looked at the website for the rules and when registration is opening by now, if not please do so as soon as possible. I wanted to say good luck to everyone and we can't wait to see what you have in store for Cosplay Spectacular this year!

Happy Easter! :)

Not for this year. We ran out of time in order to implement something like this (and test it), so we just went with old fashion e-mail. :) It's on the todo list for FanimeCon 2014 though!

Haven't gotten a confirmation email yet, but being that it was like after 10:30pm when it was sent in, I wouldn't expect something til tomorrow at the earliest.

I appreciate the not delaying the entry process, however there's a lot of vagueness I'd love to see clarified.
The current rules as posted do not match up with the email system you're using regarding entry information.

1) Will there be another follow up email that doesn't just acknowledge our email was received, but confirming we have a slot for the competition, or that we ended up on the waiting list?

2) How will we, or don't we need to submit more detailed information about the group members, characters, stage props, and other info that was traditionally asked of us?

3) How will we request craftsmanship judging?

Thank you for any procedural clarifications!

I had the same questions.  It was honestly a real surprise loading the site yesterday and seeing an e-mail address to send my Masquerade entry to, as opposed to a webform.  I'd also like to know the answers to these questions.

Another question: there's conflicting info about Walk-ons/display entries. It says that display entries need to provide audio, but there's also going to be a fashion show segment with all display entries lumped together with pre-selected music. If we're doing a display entry, we're allowed to submit our own music, correct?

Tomorrow it will be one week since we submitted our registration email request.
Can we get an estimate on WHEN we will get actual confirmation on our entries and responses for the questions we're asking? I don't know if you have to wait for a staff meeting or something, but communication to us would be very helpful!
Thank you!

Jack,

I'm uncertain if there has been a shift in who oversees the Cosplay Spectacular between this year and last year. While I understand if there has been a switch in position, I  feel that waiting till less then a month till the event to alert those competing is unprofessional. Those of us who have competed in the past are used to a larger leeway with time frames so we can plan our Fanime Experience. Those of us who run events like photoshoots, gatherings and panels need more time so we can adequately plan our other obligations.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I would appreciate a quick resolution to our questions such as; Who has made it into the competition, who is on the wait list, what times Craftsmanship judging will be available and if there will be an opportunity for an onstage walk through?

With 31 days between us and Fanime we would appreciate answers as soon as they become available.
Thank you for your time, Inoli

Very well put.  Thank you for this.

I'm going to be incredibly blunt.  This is totally unacceptable coming from a convention that has been as well-regarded as Fanime.  Every day that passes without any sort of word or answers to peoples' questions is one less day they can spend on preparing for the event.  And with making my own costume for Masquerade, I know all too well about the time and energy involved in preparing for the event.  I expect so much better from a convention like this, and it's a total let-down for someone who will be attending for the first time this year.
Title: Re: Cosplay Spectacular 2013
Post by: kimu on April 22, 2013, 07:39:07 PM
I hope this won't be a sign of what we will go through when we actually get to the convention for this year's competition.

I really enjoyed competing at Fanime two years ago, and that's why I wanted to compete here again. The onsite check in, the rehearsal and the actual competition went very smoothly for us; it was a lot of fun. Loved the Stage Pirate crew, too!
But this year?
New management for the competition or not, three weeks is enough. We need some answers so we can finish planning. I'd like to know that we're going be assured of a spot and craftsmanship judging after all the effort going into these costumes and our skit planning. Or else we can kick back and relax because we didn't get a spot.
Title: Re: Cosplay Spectacular 2013
Post by: der Glitzkrieg on April 22, 2013, 11:53:49 PM
I competed in 2009 and everything from signing up to onsite check-in to rehearsal to actually performing was fantastic. Everything ran smoothly, I knew when to expect what, and it was so much fun. I haven't had a chance to return to the con since then since I live out-of-state. I was hoping for a similar experience this year, but this is dampening those expectations. I understand logistic problems and other general mishaps, but it's been three weeks since a question has been answered -- this is unacceptable. We don't even know who's actually in the show, at this point, a little more than a month until the con.

Can we please get some answers soon?

I got one, but it was e-mailed to my secondary e-mail that I only check once a week (instead of my main one, which I check every day, and that I used to sign up for the event in the first place...) so I didn't actually find it until just a little bit ago.

Guess I've been waitlisted, I do hope someone doesn't show so I can do something with this monstrous velvet evening gown besides stand around and look pretty.

I have submitted an email query back to Jack. As of this morning I have not received any emails about confirmation or waitlisted.
This is extremely frustrating to not know what is going on.

I got my e-mail as well, so I'm in.  Should be interesting.

got my email, but I'm getting really worried about craftsmanship judging times...it takes me about 3 hours to do my makeup and get into my costume/complex wig, so I REALLY need a Sunday judging time.  Anything else is not do-able for me.

Also some more info for the display entries would be nice....I know I'll have a 30 second music clip, but the website seems to have conflicting info about display entries.

I'd be more frustrated if my costume wasn't basically finished....but, really Fanime.  Not cool.  I understand you've got a ton of crap to do, but isn't the Masquerade the biggest event with regards to cosplay?  Seems like this should be up there in the priority list.

Well *sigh* I know I feel the Masquerade is a bit neglected.

Perhaps the Cosplayers need to help out with some of the organization?

Respond back with our usual entrance stuff:
Skit/walk on summary
Who's in the skit
stage Ninjas provided
Include time/day preferences for craftsmanship judging.

I got a response saying that there is a form to fill out on the website, but I don't see any such thing. We'll see if I get a link to it.

The only form on the website is the judging form where you fill out your name, character info, etc.

Does not bode well for scheduling judging.  Argh.

So my email query this morning got me a one-line response of we're "in".
But I agree, one hurdle is over for us which is did we make it in or waitlisted, but I really want to be sure we are able to get registered for craftsmanship.

I sent basic information (check stage zero email format), using that email them. but remove some parts of it( like the time request part or the part thta get's posted online). After I did this I got an email saying "thank you for the information, see you at con" or something like that.

I completely understand that they have a lot to contend with - I have worked for conventions before and I very well understand the stresses that come with such a thankless job. I have been very patient and understanding thus far.

But considering how organized it has been even just last year, the way things are being handled this year is incredibly frustrating. The fact that we don't have so much as a simple Google Docs form with which to enter basic information and request judging times is extremely unnerving. (I understand being busy, but surely taking the time to have one form for containing everyone's information would make things much easier on the masquerade staff?)

I hesitate to use the word "unacceptable" as has been used in this forum before, but it's certainly not what has come to be expected of Fanime. All I can hope is that everyone's at-con masquerade experience goes much smoother.

All of what you said, luluko.  Very nicely put.

I also want to say, I'm really happy we all seem to have one another's backs on all of this.  We're all watching out for each other on this thread, working to try and figure out answers during a really frustrating time.  As sappy as it may sound, I look forward to meeting everyone in this thread at Masquerade.  :D

The best way would be for the official cosplay contest staff to post to everyone at the same time what they want from us next. Their email system appears to be only partially functional, as I had to actually initiate contact to confirm my group was in the contest v. waitlisted.

The fact we have not been asked to submit group members' names, the series and characters, stage prop and/or ninja info we might have, as well as the by-now-infamous how do we request craftsmanship judging time slots...? I can't imagine trying to sumbit all this at the con itself.
And if we all just take it upon ourselves from prior competition experiences to randomly start submitting information to them, will they even retain it? We'd all be submitting information in a variety of ways which I can't imagine would help them either.

And I appreciate too that everyone is trying to work together here while we flounder in confusion!!

Speaking as someone who's competing at Fanime for the first time- albeit with a group of people who have competed before- it seems that these delays are completely against the norm for the convention. I'd heard from my friends before how well-run the competition was, but now it seems to be a major mess, and a total 180 from what it was. I was, and still am, really looking forward to the competition, since this is my first time not just competing here, but with my friends, as well, so it's very concerning to me.

It took me sending an email to the cosplay staff to get a response. I recommend that anyone else who hasn't had their question answered yet take it directly to email or other means of contact. We shouldn't have to do this just to get simple answers, but it seems to be the only way.

I agree in this being a total mess. The Masquerade used to be so well run and everything, even though the other years I've been in the Masquerade, I wasn't the one submitting the information, so this is my first time doing so.

I'm also glad we can all help each other and are supportive of one another. ^^ Can't wait to meet you guys during Cosplay Spectacular.

I guess I should reply to the email I was sent to find out if my group is waitlisted or not. He did say we were in, but it's best to make sure.

I just got a reply from Jack.  For Craftsmanship, he just pointed me to the form on the Fanime website.  (I replied asking how we sign up for Craftsmanship judging, since there's nothing on the website for that.)  He also said to e-mail changes to them.  I kinda feel like he didn't even read my e-mail, just skimmed over it and replied in slightly broken English.  (No issue with language spoken, but it seems there might be a communication barrier here somehow.)

Hi Attendees

If you are in Craftsmanship judging you will need:
* 1-2 Reference photos of the character they are portraying.  One of these reference photos should show the full profile of the character from head to toe.  Ideally the second one shows the back or focuses on another detail of the costume.
* 3-5 In Progress photos of their costume construction to document that they worked on making the costume.  Ideally one of these photos will show the contestant working on the costume piece.
These print outs may be held for the duration of the masquerade, and can be claimed from the masquerade coordinator after the masquerade is over.

If you have question please send a email at [email protected]
thanks

Do you also want a write up? Or just fill out this form? And I assume on the form when it asks "How many conventions have you participated in a costume competition" you are asking how many times I have been in a costume competition, because how many cons is 3, but how many times I have been in a contest is around 8. Different questions, different answers.

I find it really unprofessional that rules and guidelines are being posted on the forum thread and not being sent to the contestants via email. If someone in my group hadn't been stalking this thread, we would have no clue about any of this. A couple of our members didn't even know there WERE forums before she started linking us to updates.

The staff should be emailing the skit groups to ensure they receive the information they need and not posting them here where only half the contestants will see them. I have been doing masquerades at Fanime for a long time but if this gets much worse I may not bother entering next year.

Oh. Well, I know when we were getting confirmation emails a week or two ago, I hadn't received one, so I emailed about it and was basically told I should have received a mass email, but I'm apparently not on this mailing list--neither were several of my friends who are participating but we all were confirmed? And I guess Jack or whoever else never mad any attempt to fix this, which is still pretty disappointing.

I have 2 questions that I'm sure other people may have.

1) What are the dimensions of the stage that we will be able to use?

2) The rules mention something about large props and how we must store them ahead of time, which is fine, but that they can't be stored after you go on stage. If we're taken to sit back down in the audience, we do we do with our large props? We'll have some folding chairs and tables as our props that are light to carry around, but just bulky if we have to store them where we sit.

This might be a stupid question, but does anyone know what time this is?  I'm guessing it's sometime on Sunday, but I couldn't find a time on the site except for rehersals.  Kinda weird that it's on the same day as the Black and White Ball.  I wanted to see if they were going to overlap.  Thanks!

I don't recall exactly what time Cosplay Spectacular starts off the top of my head, but I do remember that it was set around an hour earlier.. it could even be starting at 6 - but I'd definitely take Jack's word for it over mine. :P
The Black & White Ball intentionally ends at midnight so those who wanted to attend both events could do so. :)

I just got a response back from Jack and he said it starts at 5pm (though he may be accounting for setup time).  I'm glad the ball is going until midnight.  I have costumes set for both and I'd be sad if I didn't get to utilize both of them.  I wish one was on Saturday and one on Sunday.  Meh.  Bad planning there.  I just found out today that I'm on the wait list, which was pretty disappointing to have to hunt down an answer for that, but I'm crossing my fingers because people always drop out of these things.  Either way, I'm excited to show off my costumes :D

What day and time does the Cosplay Spectacular start? I've been looking over the pocket guide and website and can't find it at all. I found it in the program book but, it just says to check the pocket guide for the times...
