Alright guys, here's my first iteration of my character, an 8th level Knight.  I'd be happy for 9th (extra feat) or whatever.  I used the character profile from DndOnlineGames, applied public permission, and posted the link here.  Nice and easy.

Close, but not quite.  The point buy system starts every attribute at 8 pts.
Up to 14 points, every increase of 1 costs 1 point.
15 and 16 each cost 2 points.
17 and 18 each cost 3 points.

So to increase from 8 to 14 costs 6 points.
8 to 16 costs 10 points.
8 to 18 costs 16 points.

While the Maid RPG would be fun, finding time would be ... interesting.  As long as it's in the later part of the evenings, I'm free.  The only other events beyond my workshops would be the Black & White Ball.  Any idea when that actually is?

OK, I vote for keeping this a simple one-night adventure, Level 8, and no races stranger than +1 level adjustment.  Some nice and straight-forward mission.

Sounds like a great idea to me.  If nothing else, we would have the characters and backstories done by the time the Con rolls around, which would save us a lot of setup time.  Most of my spur of the moment RPG sessions with friends had half the play time taken up by creating our characters, and I'm sure none of us want that.  I have workshops to teach and panels to talk at (not to mention the ones I actually want to attend that others are putting on), so I at least don't have time to spend all day creating a character and never getting around to playing.  Let's get it on!

So, who's DM-ing this adventure?  Would everyone else like to set up dndonlinegames accounts also?  They've got character sheet generators that I've found quite useful.

Way cool.  What sort of games did you do?  I was with the "Twilight Knights Renaissance Guild".  Usually on the Sundays, occasionally Saturdays, we run a swordfighting tournament in the Food Court area.  Quite a lot of fun, especially since the Faire gives out actual cash prizes for the 1st-3rd place winners.  I think I got 100 bucks my first year when I placed 2nd.  I was so proud.  The guy was way over six feet tall, outweighed me by a hundred pounds, and used two swords, the dual-wielding ... evil word person him.  *grin*

Actually the guy I lost to is a great guy.  He was an old student of my swordfighting instructor.  Both of us were really out of practice (he got married and moved away, I was on a Mormon mission for 2 years), but we both whooped the competition.  Speaks well of my director, I suppose.  I'm really looking forward to the workshops we'll be teaching at Fanime this year.

Anyways, that's way more information than needed to be said.  Wasn't this supposed to be a RPG get-together forum?

*laugh*  I don't know why they don't like L33T there.  Perhaps they enjoy proper grammar and spelling?  Hmmm?

As for which Faire it was, I'm not sure.  I've fought in the tourneys at North Faire for the past 3 years, but I think it was a Faire up near Sacramento.  Perhaps Redding or Folsome.  I take it you go to the Renaissance Faires?

Dang-o, that does look rather crazy!  Well, RPGs are often about pushing the envelope.  Good luck.

If you're looking for some good D&D 3.5 ed help, you can go to www.dndonlinegames.com.  They're both a play-by-post site, yet they also have the SRDs for the core races and classes, plus some of the supplements.  If you have trouble navigating the site, I'm ManWithDoor both there and here.  Yeah, I know, same nickname, but I earned mine swordfighting in real life.  Was wielding a sword and a shield at a Renaissance Faire, was kicking butt in the tourney actually, and someone in the crowd starting chanting, "Man With Door!  Man With Door!"  And it sorta stuck.

Crusaders may be more powerful than Knights, but I like Knights better for both simplicity of role-playing, and they're easier to roll-play, if you know what I mean.  I don't have to worry about maneuvers, cards, stuff like that.  I can simply be a very annoying guy to mess with.

I'd like to get in on this.  I'd like to either be a Human Knight (protect the healer / Off-tank), or a Human Warmage (straight up blaster).

I posted in the counterpart forum (How to Talk to Boys) a refutation of the flaming done by PyronIkari, if you wish to see it.  Though in brief, his rather acidic remarks do nothing constructive at all.  If you wish to disagree, fanastic!  I'm a neuroscientist, so lively discussions, even disagreements on an issue, can be both enlightening and fun.  Saying that the thoughts, opinions, even fears of others are posturing/lying/BS, is beyond flaming.  It is destructive and disgusting.  I've made plenty of mistakes as a counselor, and my greatest mistake ever was belittling the fears and concerns of the one I was counseling (yeah, I beat myself up for a long time afterwards for that one).  That simply drives the fear deeper, preventing people from facing them and attaching new emotional reactions to a belief they have about themselves, others, life, or the world.  Only when they really emotionally believe that they can be "social" or "desirable", then they can have constructive relationships.  And yes, I'm speaking from both my own personal experience, and the experiences of many others.

Sure, looks matter.  ...and at the same time, they really don't.  PyronIkari is right that some men play the pity game to get a girl.  ...yet most do not do that.  Show some respect for Jane's opinion, and her attempt to actually help those who want it.  If you still disagree with what she's doing, boycott the event.  No one will force you to learn.

PyronIkari - I would recommend actually thinking about your words before writing them down.  From the way she's been treating the subject, I wouldn't be surprised if Jane_HTGPanel had counseling experience.  Having over two years of counseling experience myself (in educational, emotional, and religious venues), I know that being derisive of the concerns and fears of others does nothing to solve their dilemna.  We all have interpersonal problems in some degree, and each of us are different.  Invalidating the fears simply reinforces beliefs that there is something "wrong" with the person, that they somehow missed out on how to be a normal person.

For those out there who do have difficulty talking to boys or girls (and I have fears too, so I'm not excluding myself here), know that you're not alone.  Seeking out advise and help is both natural and extremely rewarding.  Not only are you facing your fears, you're avoiding a huge mistake that many of us make - going it alone in life.  I'm not saying that you automatically accept what they say as the truth, yet take it into consideration.  See where it can help you in your life if you apply it.  I'm a scientist by training, so questioning and experimenting on ideas is one of my favorite hobbies.

With over 6 billion people on this planet, I highly doubt we were meant to do everything alone.  Life is a grand adventure.  And as you search for that special someone (or just a nice date) build a community of positive friends.  Always keep learning.  I know many public speakers personally, and they all keep insisting that they haven't "arrived", they're students just as anyone else.  So accept where you're at, look and see where you want to go (and who you want to be), and commit to a life of change and improvement.  Then you'll be doing better than the majority of the people out there most likely.  Have fun, and keep in touch.

I agree.  I'm currently playing a Firefly game, and while it's quite fun, the Verse isn't quite built for a quick dungeon crawl.

Panels and Workshops / Re: Amtgard
February 06, 2008, 06:47:07 PM
Sounds like a fun idea!  My group last year did a sword demonstation and panel.  We were on the main stage Sunday afternoon.  The Twilight Knights Renaissance Guild.  I was the dude with the big two-handed longsword.  Good times.  Make sure that the Con organizers know your interest, and negotiate with them.  We'll be doing the demonstration and panel again this year, plus we're in negotiations to hold all-night (midnight to 6 am) boffer battles in the main ballroom every night.  Should be tons of fun.  We're also negotiating to do katana and knife-fighting workshops.  I wanted to also do sword-and-shield, or longsword lessons, but evidently everybody wants to be a frickin' ninja or something.

I've never been the ST for a large game before, so I bow out of that one.  On the other hand, I am an experienced gamer (D&D, Shadowrun, SLA Industries, all the White Wolf systems, Serenity, GURPS), and would be happy to join a campaign.  If you're looking for something with just battle (i.e. Amtgard), the Twilight Knights Renaissance Guild is currently negotiating to hold all-night battles from midnight-6 am every night, with boffers.  Makes the insurance people less twitchy than other weapons.  We'll also be holding katana and knife-fighting workshops.  Anyways, I'd love to be in a RP campaign.

Panels and Workshops / Re: Aikido and Iaido demo?
February 06, 2008, 06:35:39 PM
Aye, my group was the one doing the sword demo.  We're the Twilight Knights Renaissance Guild.  We are going to be doing another demonstration and panel this year, and are currently under negotiations to hold all-night boffer battles, from midnight to 6 am each night.  Should be fun.  If anyone wants to come to one of our fighter's practices, we hold them every Saturday afternoon in Cupertino, CA, a few miles west of San Jose.
