Hello folks
ASAHi Con will be April 9th, 2011 on the campus of Antioch High School in Antioch, CA.  This is a small con that is created to teach high school anime fans about putting on an anime convention.  Most of my students, most of the anime fans in Contra Costa County may never make it to Fanime, so ASAHi Con is there first and maybe only con.

Please come on out and make it special!  Come to CosPlay and teach the next generation how to do it!  Come sell your old manga and anime so the next generation has more to read and see.  Come and enjoy what a con used to be, a group of people coming to enjoy what they love in its most pure form.

Come and experience ASAHi Con

Hello Folks, this is Jason Ebner inviting you all to ASAHi-Con on March 21st!
ASAHi-Con is my attempt to bring the subject matter of putting on Conventions into schools.
The Convention will be small so I am relying on SWAP Meet dealers rather than dealers for this show.

ASAHi-Con will be held on the campus of Antioch High School (700 W. 18th Street, 94509)
and it will be from 10am to 5pm.  The set-up will be very basic for our first event, but then again
so was Fanime's first event.

SWAP meet tables are 5 feet long and will be 20 dollars for a full table, ten dollars for a half table.  Please contact me through [email protected] if you are interested.

I hope to see you in two weeks in Antioch!

Panels and Workshops / Moving Panels to the Marriott
August 12, 2008, 08:28:53 AM
Hello Fanime Fans,
I wanted to know your opinion on moving panels to the OTHER side of the convention center.  We are toying with the idea of moving panels to the Salons in the Marriott.  Two reasons why:
1. Panel hallway space was just too cramped.  Big panels exiting then entering was a mess.
2. Panels can grow bigger.  We will have 3 rooms of ample size so we are not restricted on who we put where.

Your comments are appreciated on this possible change.

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner

While everyone was running round blaming me, I had a chance to see what I had put together.

Panels-
1. Damn You Internets!  Mikey, you rule!  (Jared, many thanks as well!) I was in stitches the whole time I was there.  If you have not checked out this panel folks, you need to.

2. Console Wars-  What Mikey does only with gaming.  The Debates were heated and hilarious.  Can't wait to see these guys again.

Goes with out saying-
Masquerade-Once again done to perfection.  Is there anybody better than Marisa and Casey Price at this?  I don't think so!  As for the acts, it is the same as the FMV contest, it is only as good as the participants.

Surprises-
The God of the Shimasen-Wow, man is talented!  That is why I asked him to open for Masquerade

Black and White Ball-I claim stupidity here.  I had no idea this would be so popular.  We will have it back

Maid Cafe-Had no idea the line was going to be that long.  We are limited with what we can do with food.

Room for Improvement-
FMV's-This was a solid show, but it is only as good as the videos that are submitted to it.  I would have loved to see more comedy too, but it is not like I can order more.
In addition,  I don't know if the change over left people lukewarm to our show this year.  Sean Barber is very capable, but the God of AMV, Scott Peterson, had it down to a science and he had the trust of the directors.
Yes, we got caught with the interlacing bug, and we had to scramble at the last minute to find a venue to house the 4 showings.  The J was to be the home, but Musicfest became too booked.

Stage Zero-
Still not where I want it to be.  Some people get it, it is where you go when you don't know what to do, or where to go.  It is still a work in progress, but you will all know when Stage Zero hits its stride.

Over all though, Sean Barber produced his ass off, Mr. Wendell is extremely solid, and Oniko, girl we couldn't do it without you!

Disappointments.
Damn, no program books.  Shit.  That sucked for my boys Brandon and Jerry.  With out the books, you can't get to know Asian Film or sort through the hours of Anime we programed.  This snafu will be corrected for next year.

Overall, I am content, but not happy.  We need to strive for perfection.  I would like to see musicfest better attended, I would like to encourage more AMV directors to submit, and I wish more people attended the panels we had.  I think more effective scheduling should help.

So, until we meet again (or I have to defend Fanime's honor), remember, when it goes wrong at Fanime...Blame Ebner

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner

Hello Folks,
The following are some ideas that have come up during Pre-Planning meetings.  I offer them up to you now to see what you think about these ideas.  I changed the name in the hopes that it will gain more interest.  I really do want your input.  Tell me what you think!

1. Fountain Awards.
Our official CosPlay gathering area will be the fountain area out side McHenry.  The Awards would be a peer award that would be presented after the gathering on Stage Zero (more on that in another posting).  I would need the help and input of CosPlayers to make sure this goes semi-smoothly for the first year.

2. CosPlay Chess
Okay, imagine this.  We have Ranma 1/2 cosplayers playing Chess against Naruto CosPlayers.  The chess pieces are the CosPlayers themselves.  When a piece is taken, the cosplayer shows off their finishing move before the taken piece leaves the field!  We would use a speed Chess format, numbered tiles, and actual chess players to help facilitate this idea.  It has so many possiblities!

3. Fashion Show
Okay, I know you guys are great with needle and thread, but how about getting some recognition?  The Fashion Show would be your opportunity to create orginal costumes or outfits.  Prizes would be recognition of your achievement, in later years, scholarships could be possible.

4. Drive By Cos-Play
Ever just get an idea to do a skit in the middle of Con?  You guys have the people right there, it is brilliant, but you have no place to perform it and Der CosPlay is 2 days away.   If this has been your dilema, then Stage Zero is for you!   On top of its other programming, Stage Zero will offer CosPlayers a chance to do those quick impromtu skits or test out their skit ideas before their Sunday Performance.

Please, comment on these ideas.  Have you seen them at other cons?  Why did you like it?  Why didn't you?  What problems do you see?  Let me know.  I am wating to take notes.

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner

Dealers Room / Did you bring enough?
June 01, 2005, 02:21:17 PM
So, did you bring enough money to FanimeCon 2005?

If yes, what couldn't you find?

If no, what did you spend all your money on?

Dealers Room / Asian Film counterfeiting is rampant!
April 22, 2005, 01:09:32 AM
Rick Stelow from Drunkenmaster told me just how bad Asian film counterfeiting has become.  A month ago at Wizard World, he counted 15 dealers carrying counterfeits of Asian films.  A short conversation with a sales rep from Media Blasters confirmed what Rick had to say.  Media Blasters had to stop several dealers from selling counterfeit copies of Versus.  The worst part is that Drunkenmaster and Media Blasters are suffering because of this neglect.  Here are two companies trying to give us the Asian films we want to see and they can’t compete against those that counterfeit their legitimate product.  It has gotten to the point that Rick has thought about either carrying bootlegs himself or quitting.  When I went into Amoeba records the other day, I understood Rick’s pain.  I was astounded to find they too carried counterfeits.  Copies of Cutey Honey, Old Boy, Casshern and Azumi were all for sale and all counterfeits.  What is going on here?

Now, why am I calling them counterfeits?  Because they are not really bootlegs.  These are excellent, quality copies of DVD masters that were illegally obtained or they are copies of DVD’s with subtitles added to them..  These discs are made for less than 2 dollars a piece and then sold for upwards around 13 to 20 dollars.  Amoeba sells these titles because they claim not to know any better.  They also claim that they can’t be bootleg since they come from Hong Kong.  It is scary when an American company is so culturally blind to know that not all Asian films come from Hong Kong.

Right now, Comic Con, WonderCon, AX, and even PMX do nothing about Asian Film Counterfeits.  PMX even allows Cine-East, a big distributor of Asian Film counterfeits in Southern California (which can be verfied by looking at their website) to HOST their Asian Film track.  After checking PMX’s site for this year, Cine-East is once again organizing the Asian Film track.

Counterfeits are hard to spot.  Last year at Fanime, Anime Combo had copies of Ichii the Killer that had Capitol Records on the box.  The box looked legitimate because Capitol records is a recognized name.  You have to realize though that Capitol Records does not put out Ichii the Killer, Media Blasters does.  Easier ways to find counterfeits are if they:
1.Are All Region and the title was only released in Japan or China.
2.The box says region 2 or 3 but still plays on your region 1 DVD player.
3.The copyright on the box does not refer to the company that releases
    film.

Industry must step up.  Companies like Media Blasters, Tartan Video, and Columbia need to start punishing these counterfeiters.  We all remember this happening to Anime in the 90’s and to Anime soundtracks just recently.  It was even said that Anime soundtracks would never make it in the US because of the strangle hold Son May and Everanime had on the market.  Now, both are cleaned up.  The same must happen to Asian films as well.

What can you do about it?  Simple, don’t buy these counterfeits, don’t support any store that supplies counterfeits, and certainly don’t go to a convention that allows counterfeiters to sell what ever they want.  These people are ripping off the industry, not giving one dime back to the creators, and are overcharging you, the consumer.

Hello folks!
Dealerjason here reminding you all to protect yourself when it comes to buying merchandise in Fanime's Dealer's room.  Dealerdave and myself can only do so much so we need you to make sure that you are protecting yourselves.  Here are some helpful hints:

1. Before you buy, make sure you know their return policy.
If they say "All Sales are Final", that means you give them your money, that is it!  So, make sure you really want it and you want it for that price

2. Check the merchandise before you hand over the money.
-Don't blindly buy that Naruto headband with out making sure that it
    a. Is what you really want
    b. Has the proper copyrights and stickers so you know you are
        buying quality stuff

3.   Have you have shopped and have gotten the best price you can get?

4. Don't support Bootlegs!
You know that Cutey Honey movie is not out yet and that Kung Fu Hustle is not available in an All Region format, so why buy it?  I would never give someone money for something they copied from a DVD or from the internet especially when they want 9 times more than what it cost them to make it.  So, don't let the bootleggers win!  Check to make sure your DVD's and Merchandise have all the proper copyrights!

I hope this helps you folks.  As the enforcer of Fanime's Policies, I will be putting more up here to help you out!  Spend your money wisely and make sure you are happy with EVERYTHING you buy!

Happy Shopping!

Sincerely,
Jason Ebner
