Gaming / Re: League of Legends

For FanimeCon 2013? While this is the wrong forum for the idea, its not a bad idea if one can figure out the time logistics. IIRC these tournys can run a long time unless the metagame has changed significantly.

o.o; might want to check if your keyboard is haunted =O

I'll be present at the meeting and checking up on all Gaming Hall Depts; if I or someone from Tabletop has any info regarding recruitment we'll post it (or reply to that email).

(Reference: I am not the Gaming Hall Manager, I am just a assistant for that person).

The general staff meetings are open to the public and those looking to join staff in general. Did you get a email back from Tabletop by chance?

Given the recent insane spike in fuel prices, I understand the concern.
#5
^yup. Do send a email out to the dept so they know there is someone wanting to join.

For the moment though, the Gaming Hall Departments (E-Gaming Console/PC, Tabletop, Arcades) will make their staff recruiting announcements when they are ready for recruitment.

*Presses revive button*

2012 official feedback is done, we are in planning mode for 2013; PC-gaming discussion can go in here for now until the 2013 thread goes up.

For those curious about who supplied our PCs for FanimeCon 2012, Digital Storm (Bay Area local!) helped us out. I cannot comment on if they will return but they did enjoy their time with us this year!

^yup. Just watch for announcements and be ready to snipe that hotel room you want, but also line up back-ups.

I did hear good things about the Fairmont and Crowne Plaza hotels from friends and fellow staffers. Check out the Hotels 2012 Feedback thread and go from there. I plan on using those two as backups just in case my luck with the Hilton isn't good for 2013 (I'll be damned if I can't get a suite this time).

Ideas and Suggestions / Re: Badge rule
August 30, 2012, 11:25:46 PM
Heya, I can only speak for the Gaming Hall but I do share your concern. I am however skeptical if "only having a current year badge" is the solution, but I do think we need to be more vigilant on checking.

I've helped our staff+door volunteers late at night and its fun watching people try to get into Exhibit Hall 3 (The Gaming Hall) without badges. We did have quite a few incidents of people trying to sneak in and if someone did walk in without showing badges, I say to someone there "intercept and double check, I'll cover." Then again we had like 2-4 people (often 3-5) watching EH3's front door. I cannot comment on other event locations sadly.

I do wonder if having a sign saying "Badge Enforced Area" or something like it would be a start of deterring?

Staff (pre-con planning/helping/etc) or Volunteer ("I got some spare time, need a hand?") actually?

(Edit: I do ask this because it can be misinterpreted. Also pressing submit than preview =( ).

Gaming / Re: gaming headsets?

Very late to the post, but Corsair's Vengeance headsets are very good.

If you are serious about sound and got the money to spare, a dedicated sound card + a good audiophile headset is the way to go.

You know the mantra, corporations, baaaaad, baaaaaad, (say it like a sheep!)  But these claims are generally unfounded.

Most big gaming corps (EA/Activision/Ubisoft/etc) are pretty bad for various valid reasons, but I wont get into that argument here.

No matter what MMORPG you do decide to play, having a solid group of people with positive attitudes and good constructive feedback to help you triumphs everything else. I don't blame you for staying with WoW and your guild. I still play EVE Online because I ran into a really solid group of people and having a blast...despite declaring war on everyone lol.

As a 7 year veteran of WoW (on and off) and seen it from its late beta to patch 4.3 and its last raid, it was time to lay it to rest. My opinion may seem biased, but I'm craving action combat systems. I really wanted to like TERA (dat combat system!) but it still being a curse of a Korean MMO plus Diablo 3's timing turned me off. I sadly also did try: Warhammer Online, Aion, Rift, SWTOR - all "supposed" WoW killers. I did like Rift, but at the time my system was dying so my opinion was a little off. I'm glad to see it is still doing good considering things. I did hear FF11 (not FF14) was great 6 months afterwards and is still one of the few good games with a very solid storyline.

The industry is starting to realizing making a WoW killer is unrealistic and its time to focus on trying out new things, subscription gaming is hitting its market cap, and F2P might be the way to go (provided you don't screw the player over too hard). In 3 weeks + 1 month, GW2 will be a good test of F2P from a AAA (or was it AA?) house.

WoW was good too, until the Activision/Blizzard merger. What are you looking for in a MMO?

SWTOR: wait til it transitions to F2P mode. Got announced last week. I picked up SWTOR at launch and had too high of expectations and ignored alot of red flag. Only bought it because I was playing with friends and that didn't work out.
Guild Wars 2: Check out the videos on Youtube and see if its something worth a shot. Good news its F2P so you just need to pay for the box copy. Will it be good, that I don't know and the reason why I'll wait a month and see where it stands.

I was playing TERA until Diablo 3 came out and watched all my friends abandon it D:

Currently playing EVE Online for now until I hear TERA releases its major PVP patch and/or I get into Mechwarrior Online beta (MWO).

Oh my, I see E-Gaming has evolved quite a bit! Well well...I guess a veteran chose wisely to return =)

To those that want a CoD MW2 tourny, if this does happen, I would recommend not allowing the 25-kill streak "nuke". Also, don't bother with the PC edition - it requires an internet connection to even start LAN mode and then it will still lag because the host has to go through iwnet and then back.

As for Left4Dead2, I'll be honest: that's a tourny that should remain on the PC for simplicity's sake. But then requires getting said PC section back and either a Valve server or a prayer that every PC is updated pre-Con. The same could be said for Team Fortress 2...

There is a way to make a portables section viable, but other than tournaments, would it have a good use throughout the con?

Serious Business / Re: 700 Billion Dollar Bailout
September 29, 2008, 04:27:02 PM
Lets add some facts from today's events:

-Bailout failed to pass.
-Dow Jones dropped 777.68 (almost 7%), NASDAQ 199.61 (9%), S&P 106.85 (almost 9%)
-Credits are frozen apparently (want info on that)
-Lots and lots of political bickering and fingerpointing

I think we need a overhaul in the financial markets; I also think there's a lack of trust in the market anymore. I feel sorry for those that just got into college and need the loans to go to college...

I'll come from a perspective that I am fairly informed but I don't know everything position.

1) Why you would vote for one over the other. McCain or Obama?

Obama. More down to earth, actually focusing on the 90% of America that is hurting from current economic problems. His foreign policy isn't perfect, but considering the alternative, McCain, I'll stick with Obama to not get into another war (unless we get attacked by a real sovereign state). Policy wise, Obama has some good ideas, but it will be tested the day he gets into office and actually gets them passed (or at least discussed); the same thing goes for McCain.

Jokingly, I'll be surprised if McCain makes it to Election Day =P

2) Who do you think is the stronger Vice-President Candidate?

I don't know enough about either, but from what I heard from the media, Biden seems like the better choices of the two.

3) Do you believe the current economic tensions in the financial and stock markets will affect the voters?

The last 9-10 months already showed, stressed out, and pissed off all voters how our economic system needs fixing if not borderline overhaul. The US dollar has lost at least 20% face value and while everyone else in the world is coming here to buy cheap US goods, it does affect other people relying on the strong US dollar to help immigrants support their families (example - Mexicans sending US money to help their family back in Mexico, Filipinos in the US and other places sending US money back to the Philippines).

Now if we didn't invest in Iraq, 700 Billion USD won't sound as bad right and we can shrug it off, but that is another story.

4) Is high gas prices/energy still a concern? Will it affect the election?

Still is, will be still by Election Day. When I graduated high school back in 2002, gas was maybe 1.60-1.75. We peaked at 5+ and though we're dropping, I don't think we'll ever see very low gas unless we GTFO (replace the O of out with off) oil. This dependence on oil is hurting us and the current Bush administration barely gave money to alternatives.

Sorry that I had to use GTFO in a wierd context, but if you look at it, its what's been the thing for the last eight years...

I don't want to believe that ending. It made sense, but man that's a hell of a way to go.

I think we'll see some OVA's either cleaning up the ending or something else.

If you love PVP but hated how WoW handled it, this is it. Despite a few bugs and performance issues on something, this game hella rocks :D

Episode 23 - I want to suddenly abandon this series, but with just a few episodes left, I'll stick with it. I'm leaving some comments out on purpose:

Quote from: Spoiler
-"Eh, I'm done with protecting sister. Now I must kill you!" - Lelouch, in a simplified matter.
-RIP Cornelia. Shocked. NOOOOOOO
-Is it just me, or did the troops Lelouch gain "live" geass? I was pretty sure its obey him but a scene indicated something else.
-Bye Black Knights, you got owned by a simple Lelouch plan.
