The overall rule is time and quality.
We have a certain amount of time that we can make the show. Categories with more entries tend to have more "high end" submissions so we try to accommodate for that, however, we do try to have at least 5 videos per category, then we add on more in that category while watching the overall length of the show. This can change if say some of the higher scoring entries are much longer. In that case we may only add 1 or two extra beyond the 5 minimum, versus having enough time to add a higher number of shorter entries.

I hope this sheds some light on why we tend to have longer run times for Action and Drama. These are the most popular submissions. Sometimes we put EVERYTHING we get into Comedy or Experimental and still barely hit the 5 entry mark. I know that Comedy is the most difficult to do, but if done right, it's one of the main things that the audience tells us they're looking forward to. Ironically, we tend to get the fewest entries for that each year. The audience always say they want more Comedy. Perhaps by creating awareness in the AMV community, we can give them what they want, right? I hope so. This is why we have been trying to show everyone some of what goes into making the show.  ;D

The entries do tend to fluctuate from year to year, but I think the glitch we had on AMV.org may have been a big factor. This hasn't been the lowest number in recent years, but no where near the almost 100 entries we had a few years ago.

Alright ladies and gents,
After processing every entry and making sure that they all worked we have this year's numbers. We had a smaller turn out than years past, yet higher percentage of international entries this year as well.

We have processed a total of 52 entries this year:
Action: 21
Comedy: 08
Drama: 16
Experimental: 5

Exhibition: 2

While the total is currently final, the amount in each category may change as some entries may be re-categorized during the Judges Panel. I hope this will help you out if you are planning a strategy for next year. We'll continue to do this each year if you want us too. Hope it helps. ;D

Sure thing! We will be posting the initial numbers in the morning since everyone has until Midnight tonight. By initial numbers I mean that sometimes we may move an entry into a different category when we do the Judge's Panel depending on if there is an over all consensus.

That is correct. You have until Monday night (April 30th) to submit. So one minute before it becomes Tuesday. No worries about asking. Better safe than sorry right?  ;D

Absolutely. The videos in each category will remain the same but we're going to change the order of the categories in each room just like last year.

Each show (Fri/Sat) will be the same in order to give people more of a chance to see more of the convention.

Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that the deadline is this coming Monday April 30th, 2012!

As of this posting (Thursday April 26th) we have sent out emails to ALL entries received.
This means that if you are missing an email from us, please contact us ASAP!!! Also please check your emails for any messages regarding issues with videos. I know there were a couple.
To make it easy for you though, you won't get an official confirmation email if we are still having issues. If you got the confirmation email, then your entries are working just fine. ;D

We've been getting loads of entries this week! I'd like to add that we've had a higher number of international entries this year as well.

As long as it's anime related and a music video, I don't see a problem with that.  ;D

We're doing multiple showings. Friday and Saturday at 1pm. We got good feedback from last years schedule so we went with the same.

We tend to have the Judges viewing about 2 weeks before the Con. After that we send out all the notices within a couple days of that.

Also,
Stage Zero will have access to all the submitted entries to show at Con at their discretion. They will not be playing any that are in the show until after the first showing. The first showing is on Friday at 1pm (seating at 1pm, show starts at 1:30). So after that, all entries will be fair game for Stage Zero to show.

We will be posting the official times as soon as we get final word of where the show will take place.

We were waiting to receive a few more entries before posting this years numbers for categories... so far all we have received (as of 4/17) are Action or Drama. We know we tend to get flooded with entries in the last week before the deadline, but we are crossing our fingers to get some Comedy entries soon.

So looking back on previous years here are the number of entries we get (on average) for each category:

ACTION: 25
DRAMA:  35
COMEDY: 9
EXPERIMENTAL: 7

Keep in mind that each year we tend to only have room for between 5-7 entries for each category that make it to the show. Essentially, you are competing within each category to make it into the show. This is why we have to cut some amazing AMV's for certain categories each year.

Let us know what you think. ;D

EDIT: i looked again and still didn't see it. you may want to double check. the hentai contest is listed but not this one.

Hi RiderG,
We double checked and sure enough, you were correct. Thanks for checking on that. We were having issues with the page timing out when we did the original post. I went back in and posted everything up again. Thanks for the help.

We will begin notifications this week. Stay tuned!
#77
We will be notifying everyone that has made it into the finals, and thus, the show at Con.

We had posted on the animemusicvideos.org. We will also be posting the winners there as well.
#78
I like that idea. The awards worked really well on Sundays. We will try our best to keep that the same this year.
#79
We will be posting the list of videos that make the show after the deadline and subsequent Judges Panel. This takes place in the weeks leading up to FanimeCon.

Video Programming / Re: 2012 FMV Contest - Prize Ideas
February 08, 2012, 08:33:21 PM
We are going to continue to have some sort of gift cards for the entry prizes since it seems to be really popular, however, I'm not sure if we can get many more of those for audience prizes as well.
Keep sending us more ideas for audience prizes.

As far as DVD's and Manga; those should be doable, but you are right about different people having different tastes.I think  we can figure something out with more feedback. Cheers!
