Title: Deal or No Deal?
Post by: otakuya on May 01, 2006, 11:16:08 AM
Is it OK to barter (verbally) some dealers into lowering their advertised prices to get a better deal? Or is this something that can only be done during the Swap Meet?
For example: if there are DVDs I want to by that is advertised/shown as $20 each, can I ask to buy two for $30?

BTW, I just love the real DoND show, as you can tell... ^_^,

No harm in trying, especially with independent dealers . But it's usually easier if your buying multiple items though.

I did it with a few dealers, mainly because I really wanted to buy something and I was a dollar or two short.
A few will flat out refuse though.

It also helps if you try that on the last day of the con.
based on past experiences.

But if all else fails, try buying things, then selling them to your friends... It's worked for me... several times...

Don't tell them.

There's nothing wrong with it as long as the dealer agrees.  And I've heard that a number of them will allow costumers some leeway to haggle.  Personally, I just pay the marked price.

lol i got to wrong idea when i read the topic. i was thinking it was the game on tv. like if we have some anime items and some are bad for the low cash amount .o1cents and so. and then for the millondoller you have like a dvd set or some nice item. and do it like the show.
the person picks a number and he gets that case. or in our "case" a pece of paper with that number. then he picks off other numbers and seeing what he did not have in his case. and he can take the bankers offer of a plushy or cheep item. or eep going.  Do you see how this game would go at fanime?

i think one of these or two during the opening, Cosplay or Closing would be fun. Just pick randomly from the Members list and if that member is there He/She  gets to play infrunt of everyone. I think it would be fun. but ya this is what came to my mind when i saw the Topic. i know this post fits more in the Ideas index.  anyone like this idea? shoud it be told to Dave for a idea on what to add or something? everyone could yell Deal or No Deal to the one on stage. thats my input.

All of the information mentioned including last day, buying more, and cosplaying are true from my experience.  Last year, I purchased two sets of figures and because the dealer liked my cosplay, I got an extra 20% off :]  I initiated the negotiation to lower the price.

Dealers tend to say no to lower negotiated prices for DVDs.  They make very little profit off DVDs.  Gotta buy a ton to get a discount.

Well, it is called the dealers room for nothing right? Can't hurt to try. I know you can do this at the swap meet and especially the last few minutes of the meet, where dealers end up giving things away for free cuz they don't want to carry stuff (same with dealers room).

See? It's best if you try, ESPECIALLY while wearing a costume. That seems to be the most successful option of yours...

well..i tried doing this with one of the dealers. my main issue was, they think they know all the facts, and if you call them on something and then try to lower the price they get rude. One dealer for isntance said that he was selling for 10 percent off the normal price of this dvd i wanted. I had proof that the manufacturers were selling for lower...and they would hear nothing of it. so it dpeends on their attitude
