Second day/night done! Met some great folks, some local bay area residents, some from out of state, and was fortunate enough to receive tips in the form of money and pocky!

I had a lot of people just wave and ask if it was really free which was cool too. I may do it again tomorrow if I have time!

It sounds great that this is working out well  ;D

Ahh unfortunately my younger brother isn't quite 18+. Is there anyplace that you recommend to go out and try (mainly eat)?

Here's a list of places I made... There are many many many more places, but I didn't have the time to list everything.

Hows the traffic?  Also are their places where i can park for the whole day? I know i would pay

Traffic isn't bad, but there is the "Color Run" event today that might close down a few streets. If you want to park somewhere there are public garages all near the Convention. Not sure how much they charge for full day parking.

Whelp!

After a few hours of driving around I think a few people finally got the courage to inquire more and ask for a ride. I think people have a tendency (rightfully so) to think that there might be some sort of catch. I was able to help out a few folks and it was great! I'll be doing it again tomorrow if I have a free schedule.

Updated with a picture of my car.

Yup, the waiver is done and I'll print out a few copies. If I could achieve just one thing, I'd like people to try the local food and small business and avoid Subway and McDonalds unless that was truly their first option for food.

Here's a copy of the waiver. Unfortunately, I am only willing to transport folks that are 18 years old or above.

PS: Please don't try to sue me. I have no money anyway ^_^

Looks like I'm still good to go with the very informal/friendly shuttle service within DTSJ. I'll post up more details by Thursday evening.

I'll give rides to people who wave me down, but I'm thinking about taking requests via phone too strictly from those who frequent this forum.

If you'd like to participate PM your number and your name and I'll add you to the list of people I'll respond to. The way it would work is as follows...

If you're part of the list I have and you send me a text with your location I'll text back if I'm available and if I am how long I'll be. After that you hop in, sign a waiver just to protect my butt, and I'll take you anywhere within DTSJ. If it's just a quick stop at the market or something I'll wait around the area and take you back to the convention.

Again this is all free, I'll work off of tips (snacks, trinkets, money, etc.), but there is absolutely no obligation. More details to come including description of the car being used.

There's quite a few places. New bars have popped up in the last year, but if you're looking for something more like a liquor store there are plenty near the convention. I believe there is one right on San Salvador and 3rd or 4th. That's only about 5 minute walk.

ROOM AVAILABLE

DISCLAIMER:

It's all about safety when traveling! If you do decide to stay with me I will give you the address and my cell phone number before hand. Make sure your emergency contacts know where you're staying. I'll also include proof of residency in form of a picture of my California's DL, and link you to my Linkedin profile. If you need further assurance we can discuss additional information that I can release to you.

Local HERE!

I was born and raised in SJ and I've lived in DTSJ for 8 years now. This year I decided to sublet my living room (quite large) to 1-2 people, possibly 3 people max. I'm looking to make a little extra cash, house some hopefully cool and down to Earth con goers, and overall just have a good time.

Please read below and PM your email address if you're interested.

Information:

+ Located right next to San Jose State University in a Victorian home converted into an apartment complex. The location is literally   across the street from SJSU and is about a 5-10 minute walk to the convention (maybe a little longer depending on how elaborate your cosplay is :P)
+ Free use of the facilities; Restroom/Shower, Microwave, Refrigerator, Wifi, TV, Etc.
+ I have a pug. May not be the place for you if you're allergic to dogs or cuteness.
+ As noted below, I'm also providing a free shuttle service this year so if I'm available I don't mind giving you rides to and from the      convention.
+ I'm a local! If you need recommendations I have them!
+ Prices are negotiable and I guarantee will be cheaper than what the hotels are asking. We can discuss details via email or over the phone. Preferably over the phone.

Requirements:

+ Ages 21+ please! Nothing against the younger con goers, but I prefer people who are generally more mature and stable.
+ Valid driver's license
+ If it's a party of 2-3 people, all people within the party must know each other.
+ Drama is not welcome
+ Alcohol is welcome, but no heavy drinking, know your limits, and be respectful.

I'm also running a FREE shuttle service within DTSJ (at my own leisure) If you need rides to and from the con and I'm free I wouldn't mind. Otherwise it's a very nice and short walk.

Thankfully I'll keep it completely within DTSJ and I've never been in an accident (that was my fault!). Liability... I've thought about this and it might be something I have people read and sign before entering just as a precautionary step. I don't think it'll be an issue, but better safe than sorry.

I'm also subletting part of my apartment as well if anyone needs a place to crash close to the event and wants to pay less than hotels.

I'm honestly hoping more people are in a similar situation such as yourself. I love SJ, lived here all my life, and I'm entering into a career of public service. It's just a great way for me to encourage people to visit local businesses, chat with people I've never met, and hopefully steer people away from doing the standard/typical thing like going to Subway or McDonald's if they'd rather try something new and local (not that there is anything wrong with Subway if you like that). DTSJ has changed a lot within the last couple of years for the better and it's great when people from out of town get to experience it.

UPDATED:

05/23 Update!

I decided to release my number so people can text me for rides. PLEASE read the rules before texting.

Include your name, location, how many passengers, and what time you'd like a pickup.  Use the passcode "pugs" at the end. If I respond back it'll be within 5 minutes. If I don't respond I'm probably driving someone else or out of service. Thanks!

I've lived in SJ all my life and have lived in downtown for 5+ years now. I quickly made a google map that lists a few places I think Fanime attendees would enjoy. A mix of cheap eats, grocery stores, new hot spots, etc. (No I don't work for any of these establishments, I just enjoy their good food!)

Top of the list, and some of my personal favorites!

Original Gravity
Some of the best food in DTSJ. Gourmet hot dogs, duck fat fries, I think they still do a mean grilled cheese. Tons of craft beer if you're old enough to drink. Lots of outdoor seating in the back patio. You can still dine in if you're under age. Tell em' Sonny sent you!

San Pedro Square Market
Probably the best place for groups. Tons of options for food, snacks, coffee, etc. Everyone will end up finding something they like and you support the local businesses. Pretty much a big building of food vendors with tons and tons of seating. It's gonna be hot. They have ice cream, nuff said.

Japantown
If you can make it to Japantown (Take the ligh trail or other forms of public transit) it's totally worth it. Tons of places to get your sushi fix, there's a Japanese market for bento boxes or snacks from Japan, Banana crepe serves SHAVED ICE!

It's always logical to try and save money and bring your own food, but I hope some people would spend a dinner or a lunch and explore DTSJ and see all the new stuff that is available now. San Pedro Square has tons of fantastic places to eat and are priced very fairly. There's also Original Gravity on South 1st St. if you're in the mood for gourmet sausages, duck fat fries, and tons of craft beer (You don't need to be 21 to dine there).
