Title: Any people in Oakland?
Post by: L3sli3_Lov3s_Chu on April 07, 2008, 03:09:34 PM
So, I've been seeing all these gatherings in places far away. Like in San Jose, Fremont, and Hayward that I can't go to. I was wondering if anyone in the Oakland or San Fransisco area was here and want to to meet up? It would be nice to first have an introductory meeting and maybe go to a park and eat munchies n' stuff! I really wanna meet up with some people so if anyone is intrested please let me know.

A possible plan:
People come to the designated meet-up spot (like a place in Oakland like DownTown at Burger King) and we shake hands and meet. I think its important that we get to know each other breifly so that the rest of the day isn't awkward.

Afterwards: We all p go to a park, maybe one in Berekely or even one at Lake Merrit and eat ( I could provide some food n' stuff [CAKE!!]). Talk about our experiences at Fanime or what ever comes up.
After: (If we're in Berekely) There's this place in Berekely called in Anime V we could go to. It's an anime store, hence "Anime" V.
(If in Oakland) Lets go to Emeryville and go to the movies and chill some more. Then call it a day?

Let me know if anyone is interested. I'd love to meet up with some of you guys! I'll keep yuh posted!

I don't think people are in Oakland. It's like there is some kind of I Am Legend thing going on.

It wouldn't HAVE to be in the city. It could even be in Oakland or a neighboring city, like B-town (Berekely) or San Leandro. Anywhere's cool

by 'city', I'm referring to Oakland, not s.f.; i go more to san fran and SJ than san leandro or Berkeley.

im totally down for a random gathering in your area. _insert random city here_

some ppl have the means or ability to travel out of the bay area (i.e san jose area) and some of us cant.

as for the idea of oakland, i think (semi-joking/semi serious) that some ppl have the stereo-type that oakland isnt one of the safer big cities around.

considering that were bunch of a random group of anime fans, we might attract unwanted attention to ourselves and again my concern would be safety.

if your really still serious to still hold a gathering, then we'll see if anyone else is interested and we'll go from there.

Dr. O - I still say we need another adventure of biblical proportions.  :)

Oh, well, that would explain why people aren't responding to my thread like I want them to. But, honestly, this thread was ment more so for those of us who realize that Oakland isn't all that bad unless you go to bad area and that you can have fun anywhere.

Personally, I don't know how an anime fan acts in public. I mean, I act normal. Quiet, to myself, respectful and I'm an anime fan? What exactly do you mean when you say we would attract attention to ourselves? Unless we're parading down the street, yelling and what not I think we would be perfectly fine, but alas, this gathering is ment for people who realize this...

Well its not like the group is obnoxious...wait a minute yes we are.

Here are a few things that have happen through out gatherings:
-guys making out with guys
-girls making out with girls
-Kegan bitting girls
-Kegan bitting boys
-me flirting with girls and a times boys
-Random person screaming "I lost the game"
-girls eating cherries erotically
-large group walking to a certain location
-trying to talk when everyone is talking
-lots of laptops or electronic devices
-random people jumping on each other
-my clothes to be requested to be taken off
-tree climbing
-people climbing
-people giving back rides
-people giving back rubs
-people humping cars
-people trying to glomp someone to the ground
-having 10+ people carrying someone in Disneyland to the small world ride all singing "its a small world"
-random pirates...very few ninjas
-more random Yaoi
etc etc

So in truth we do attract a lot of attention to ourselves.  And apperantly some people think we are someone else so they approach us thinking we are them and then realize we arent them.  But in all is all in good fun.  Random hang out in Oakland or anywhere really, Im down.  People know if I'm free Im down :P

well, I live in Hayward, so I don't mind traveling to Oakland to hang out.

@L3sli3_Lov3s_Chu: you should come to one of the board gatherings and meet these crazy folks though. They are a fun group to be around though lol

Dr. O hate to point out a mistake thar...
but RHPS = Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Good guess tho. ^_^

funny tho. a random high school band + RHPS would be absolutely HILARIOUS.
dont forget Jere(miah) + Jesus epic fun of biblical porportions...

but RHPS usually happens at nite. I think we need a day gathering so I could actually see ppl, and not deal with zombies/vampires or hungry biting kegan-monsters...

Sorry for the triple post. But another comment. Yes. Technically speaking there is a sub division of 'types' of us fangirl/fanboys here.

Technically there are 2 groups. (please I hope i dont offend anyone by making this 'observation' )

The social group ( usually known as the 'upstairs group' ) They're very outgoing and have a tendancy to do crazy things at random. again this is not a skill, but a natural talent that some of these folks have - *cough cough* i.e.-> kegan-monster...

The Laptop/Gamer/Art group ( usually known as the 'downstairs group' )They're a bit more reserved and usually have live chats about anime, which comparing artistic styles, and usually dabble in online gaming. and sometimes debate random topics and stuff like that.

sometimes the group combine into a massive group 20+ people and when we 'invade' random locations for gathering we're not hard to miss. Sometimes theres at least on person wearing a fanime/anime related shirt. and some of us just have the 'natural' otaku look - ( ie pins, anime bags, the hair, and sometimes the camera in hand ready 4 pics ).

but of course sooner or later we'll figure something out and have a gathering already.  :P

*shakes head in disappointment* because apparently people don't understand the concept of "etc" I will add more to the list:

-lots of eating
-occasional food contest
-spending an hour deciding where, how and when to get more food and then a group leaving on themselves to get what they wanted
-random gaming
-still someone screaming "I lost the game"
-some anime watching/criticizing/or something they do
-some person sitting by themselves in front of a laptop occasionally making grunting noises to catch others attention
-more gaming (including video games, card games, UNO, dice games, ETC.  Yes UNO is a game type on its own)
-Random youtubing on a Wii
-Random Youtubing videos period
-occasional group shopping online
-some body on 4chan trying to show something funny to someone else that they already saw else where
-some updating their or someones else's computer

Oh and this stuff also happen at eating establishments like TapiocaExpress, Denny's or any other eating establishment where we go in a group that will allow such actions.

There you all happy.

If you post a date, a time and a location.  You will get responses on who can make it, usually, and then the fun goes from there  8)

Hm, I've been thinking and I've come to a conclusion: I want a gathering and not a whole mob of people. I think it wise to put a number limit of people who can attend as to not attract alot of attention to my mini-mob. I haven't come up with a designated number but it will probably between 5 and 15 people. I'll keep you all posted on recent updates and possible happenings.

i wouldnt worry too much about the number.

but as you can see we'll all social creatures and we usually just got with the random and crazy flow of our daily lives and yes the random occasional gathering.

watever you decide, just let us know. in realistic terms it really depends if ppl can make it or if we already have made plans.

Fanime (staff meetings and other things) are pretty consistent throughout the rest of the weekend so act now while supplies (free time) lasts.

Our operators are standing by.  :)

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!

Okay! Does anyone know how to get to Golden gate park from Oakland? I'd love to revisit the park (it's been years!) and I think it's a cool start out spot for the gathering. From there we could over run some fun resurant in Japan Town and chill... I have nothing else from them on.

A likely meet up date will be on the weekend:

May 3'rd at about 1:30 p.m. - 'til when ever.

or

May 4th about 12:30 p.m - till 7:00 p.m.

If Golden gate is too far another meet up place is at the Piers. (Where the oversized Arrow and Bow in the ground is.)

Note: This is IF we meet in SF. I'd really love to, but I'm scared no body will come....

You should do what I do, dont ask or you will be dragged there and "devirginized".  I myself have never been to it, but just nod my head and say ok.  I throw in the occasional kew, but you have to watch out what they say.  Because if you arent paying attention it could come out like "Yea and then this fat guy sat on me and started grinding on me" if you respond kew with that you will get some odd looks

Ohh, I hail from Piedmont! (: It's a little town in the middle of Oakland if you haven't heard of it. I dunno if anyone has... xx;

I don't think we have many gatherings here, but in February 2007 I did organize a gathering to go to the SF Zoo; it was 30+ attendees-strong, and a lot of them are on the Fanime forums too. (Hanyaan, BART Boy, the works)

But yeah; it's a bit late for a gathering, but it doesn't hurt to post here nonetheless!~

Yeah we should totally do a Post-Fanime-Gathering ^_^

Or we could have a Bay Area Gathering DURING Fanime, so we can meet new people who live within bus/BART distance.

I don't know! In this thread AND the other thread nobody seems to want to pick a time or a place!

Therefore I have proposed we either go to Japan Town in San Francisco on Saturday NEXT WEEK...OR we could meet up at Jack London since it's closer.

How does that sound...?

I live in Oakland and I propose that us Oakland people (or anyone else that wants to come) round up and go out to eat some Ethiopian food or dim sum near the Lake Merritt area.

Ensarro's Ethiopian Cuisine is a nice restaurant located 2 blocks away from where I live. Each entree consists of a meat/veggie dish that is of EPIC proportions and are meant to be shared. I'd like say 3-4 plates could effectively feed 6 people. Believe me, it's really that filling. =o Beware if you don't like spicy foods!

The Old Place Seafood House is really good for the price and variety on their dim sum list. I usually go here on the weekdays to avoid the crouds of people on the weekends. The service isn't as good as your regular restaurant ( I go refill my own tea) and the staff has difficulty communicating in English, but I say suck it up and enjoy!

After eating, there is always the Grand Lake Theater (4 blocks) or chilling out at the park by Lake Merritt, which is right across the street.

OMG.....Procrastination.

It would seem that this whole things hasn't gotten any further off the ground then when it was up to me. I think that the Feb.7th idea is great is what we're offically going to do considering that we, as a group, wouldn't stick out so much versus us just gathering up.

Thing is... I has no idear where the Chinese New Year parade is since I've never actually been to one. If in Oakland, we should REALLY start making a meet up spot that's familiar to all of the future participants in this gathering and we should make a plan on what we're going to do after... If there is an after (cuz it's a damn parade, and like Deonchan said, lot's to do).

(I HELLA DIDN'T EVEN READ WHAT YOU GUYS POSTED -_-;;; Sorry, guys.)

Here's your (and everyone's directions to the meeting spot)

-Go to a BART station.
-Get on BART
-Get off at the Embarcadero station
-Go upstairs
- Go to the Chevy's and sit on the benches outside

Meeting spot done.

Thats actually a great idea, Roth. And now that I think about it, that would be a heck of alot better considering it has to do with anime. It's on Feb. 15 and 15th at the Cathedral Hill Hotel http://www.aodsf.org/ . I'd certainly enjoy going! I was soooo lonely the last time I went... And I certainly had been considering going again.

Really, it's your own fault for post YOUR idea on MY thread, regardless of how old my idea is. This isn't the offical thread for east bay/oaklanders gathering. Title: Re: Any people in Oakland?

well heres the basic summary of this thread

There has been countless suggestions, denon suggested the chinese new years parade in SF he planned a meet up spot and all Though seeing that people cannot read it all he decides to drop it. Leslie has been sporadic about updating or gathering peoples suggestions probally due to internet connection or busy schedule. Everyone hasent voted, the topic is about any people in Oakland so someone just picks a date and meet up at the mall or something :U its not that hard I have only been to oakland once to a friends house.

Do something like this:
-Have three sets of dates (pick weekends since its when people are not in school/day off from work)
-Pick easy meeting spots (malls, park, pizza place?)
-have people pick a date and meeting spot based on what majorty says
-Just hang out and chat

I think a nice place to meet is someplace like Doctor Comics & Mr. Games. Or possibly at a coffee shop someplace in Oakland would also be good.

Usually any Friday, Sat, and Sun is good for me, as long as I can plan it out in advanced.
Title: Re: Any people in Oakland?
Post by: L3sli3_Lov3s_Chu on January 17, 2009, 12:03:34 PM
It's basically like Kazuko said...

I think everyones ideas are great.... But for me, personally, when Roth suggested the AOD gathering, I was thinking that it would be great because AOD has to do with anime so I felt that it would be a great place to gather.

And I still feel that way.

And it's like I said in my other post, people who want to plan the Parade gathering here are more than welcome, I said offically that the New Year's parade was going to be the gathering that everyone could do... I never said the AOD one was. I just felt the the AOD gathering would be a great chance to meet up with people AND enjoy anime/comics at the same time. Plus, AOD an the parade are mega close... So, we could gather at the Parade THAT day and then, if possible, meet up for the AOD Con a couple days later.

Fact of the matter is, I never ex'ed out the idea for the Parade gathering, I was just thinking that it would be great to gather at AOD, too.

So, if people are still down with the parade gathering, do your thing... But please don't get mad at me when I agree with someone else's idea, unless I say it's offical... No need to make a deal out of it.

And ,um... No more suggestions, ONLY the AOD one and the Parade one are on the table... Gather around those two ideas so as to halt any further confusion...

And people.... THERE WILL BE A GATHERING.

Post....

We'll have to see if people are still down for doing the New Years Parade thing, but really, as far as the amount of people that can come, as many that show up are welcome to join, though it would be nice if it were a small group versus a mini mob, but really, all are welcome.

For those of us who are unable to go to AoD...why not have a meeting at Endgame in Oakland? They have some gaming nights there...

Thats a great idea, but to keep confusion to a minimum could you make a seprate thread please?

So for AOD, is there going to be a gathering at the Chevy's in Downtown SF at 2:30 p.m sunday? I'm down with that, just to get lunch in the City. I'm not technically from Oakland, but anyone that's from the east bay should go to this.

To be honest, I didn't even know S.F. had a Chevys. Therefor, I don't know where it is. But if it's close and if the people who want to go think it's a good meet up spot, why not? I'd be down for it. Any others?

Aw, that's too bad.

It comes with great discomfort that I have to cancel the gathering (though it looks like no one was interested). My grandmother is having her birthday party today and told me on short notice.

Despite this fact I am going to make my AODcon thread in hopes that some folks show for a cool East Bay gathering.

Well so far it seems like all of these gatherings have been a bust. We should create something simple I think. Like a gathering at the Manga section of a bookstore or something ^^;

Not completely. I actually was able to meet up with someone. And my con experience was fun.

I'm still on.

How was AOD? did you actually meet someone. in person?

owh mai garsh :)

we'll eventually plan out something for the great mall, milpitas.

once you establish your identity to more peeps here, and have more sucessful gatherings ppl will show if you have a plan.

I just cant think of any hangout spots in the east bay, mostly because im not familar with the area :P

AOD was fun! I was alone for about 3/4 of the con but none the less it was fun. And yersh, I did meet someone in person. He actually found meeh. I actually learned alot about gathering, too. Always post where your going to meet... -_- I unfortunately forgot to and only meeting one person was the end result. But, it's like they say, better one then none.

I personally don't know where The Great Mall is, but if it isn't too far away I'd gladly come. I should start googlin'. n_n

The Great Mall is a ways away from the Oakland area. It's down more by San Jose.

There's various hangout places around in the East Bay. There's Game & Book stores. Movie theatres. There's Dr. Comics & Mr Games Comic, Card, and Game store in the Piedmont/Oakland area. There's some nice mall type areas in Hayward, Emeryville, and Alameda. Let's not forget movie theatres around in the area either.

That was similar to a point I made later. Too much time was spent without even setting dates and such. Perhaps I should just go try to create another gathering...again...this time in a public place. I'm actually quite good at planning things...

Well one thing that helps is planning it a month or more in advance. Another is setting an actual date and time, that way you can see if that really works for people. It may also help planning someplace all of us can get to easily, ESPECIALLY by Public Transit. Maybe you could host it at Jack London or Piedmont? Both are pretty accessible by public transit.

I'm sorry I've been gone. My computer had died for the better part of a month.

Areas in berkeley that are a good gathering place is eudemonia and Games of Berkeley, both are right near shattuck Bart and by the UC berkeley campus. The problem with Dr. Comics in Oakland is it's not quite near Bart.

Anyhow, I'd be down for a meeting in Berkeley just because it's easy to get to. Perhaps one of us should just set a tentative date for the next month or one after that?

I can meet anyone pretty much anywhere in Alameda. Or in certain places in Oakland...

Just pick a time/date next week and I'll see what I can do. I think that's part of the problem is it takes FOREVER for us to PLAN dates and times, and then when we DO make them, they turn out too last minute!!

Also if we make MULTIPLE dates & times then our chances of having successful meetups GREATLY INCREASE.

Well most shootings happen at the night time, and it's pretty obvious they're bad areas. You know bars on windows, and other such things.

If people met at a place like Piedmont, then that's a more high end place to live, you're not going to find ANYBODY shooting ANYONE there. It all depends on the areas.

Personally though I'm not sure if I would have time, unless it was a Monday for a couple of hours. I have waaaaay too much Math to be doing, so I can have lots of free time at FanimeCon ^^;

Actually, it might be a good idea(now that the con is closing in on us in a few days) to meet up at the con just to meet all of us who are nearby to Oakland so we can plan future meet ups after Fanime, along with having a nice area to break the ice. On that note, do we have any plans to meet up at Fanime? If so, I'm down with the idea.

Why not start posting dates in June that would work for everyone, and we can work from there on a specific meeting place?

There's also Kin-YoobiCon in August over in Hayward.

yeah we could just go to a anime store and hang out and get lunch. Start small and then plan there or something for a con or something else. Just something to break the ice.

Well why not Dr. Comics & Mr. Games in Oakland? Not only is it easy to get to via public transportation, but there's a good amount of areas to eat at nearby. Not to mention they have that tasty ice cream join nearby as well <3

Well now that a good chunk of people have agreed to meet at Dr. Comics & Mr. Games....

How about we meet sometime next week? Unless the week after would be better for you all?

After we agree on which week to host it, we can narrow down which day and time. ^_^

*Raises Hand*

I'm down for a Gathering/Meet-up. We should hang out at Alameda or something. Like the Theatres, Sushi House, Nations, Tapioca Express, Quickly, etc. since it's more safer to roam there than at Oakland.

Btw, where is Dr. Comics & Games and what bus should be taken to go there?

Dr. Comics and Mr. Games is on piedmont avenue in Oakland. An extremely safe place in Oakland. I'm not sure of a specific route to get there as I'm unaware of where your specifically coming from.

Here is a map of where it is to make it easier for people to see where we are going and i do have to say This is one of the SAFEST places in oakland I hang out there a lot And the fact that there is a fentons there makes it even better :).

There is  also a comic shop in Alameda and if we get bored with that we could all see a movie too. just an idea. For the bus route i think everyone has to actually research which one to go on. Maybe this will help: http://www.actransit.org/maps/index.php

How about we all hang out on Thursday? Dr. Comics & Mr. Games is not only in a rather safe area, but a more white neighborhood as well. I've been there several times, even at night.

For public Transportation you can take the 51 bus and then walk a few blocks.

I've been to the comic shop in Alameda, and it's tiny and crowded. Although we could also hang out in the outdoor shopping plaza in Alameda. That's also a rather safe area. They have Jamba Juice, Safeway, Borders Bookstore, Lord's Ice Cream, Applebee's.

Either location is fine with me, but so far most people are good with Dr. Comics & Mr. Gamaes. Also if you sign up for their newsletter you can find out when they have 40% off Manga and Card & Board Games, and other awesome sales!

If anyone has a problem with Thursday, please suggest an alternate meetup day, as I want to get this going ASAP, that way we can be sure to get a good size gathering ^^;

Also if anyone has that web site advertisement from Fanime about Custome All Over Anime T-Shirts I'd be VERY greatful if you could give me the web site.

Why don't we just have two gatherings? One at Dr. Comics and another somewhere in Alameda like Southshore or something. So that people who can't attend one gathering can attend the other.

Oh yeah, the site for the custom anime shirts are @ http://www.sublimoto.com/
Title: Re: Any people in Oakland?

Yeah I found sublimoto earlier tonight. Unfortunately at $55 a t-shirt it's not something I can really afford, I mean that's just REALLY excessive for a single t-shirt >.<

Well I think that sounds like a really good idea! How about we host the Oakland Dr. Comics & Mr. Games gathering this Saturday....and then we can either work out a date for the Alameda gathering here, or I can open up a new thread for it ^_^

Well I highly doubt that considering I haven't gone to HS in YEARS. I'm a Junior College student. ^^;

Well I think we should shoot for say...1pm? That gives us plenty of time to sleep in, get ready, and travel around! We should probably try to get there early if we're taking bus. Mostly because we all know how they don't always follow schedule and skip a bus. >.<

Here's my phone number for the meetup: 510-205-0714

In terms of meeting up at Alameda South Shore AKA Towne Square...what Days/Times would work best for you all?

I think we should ALL wear our Fanime Badges so we can all easily recognize one another for BOTH gatherings ^_^

Well if you miss the Oakland gathering, there seems to be a smaller Alameda Gathering, which is also near Oakland ^^;

1pm This Saturday @ Dr. Comics & Mr. Games ^_^

What about 1pm NEXT Saturday, June 13th, at South Shore Center. How about in Borders Bookstore Manga Section? That way those of us who get there early can have something to do.

I think that would be best. That way we can all look at each other and go "Oh this person is here for the Fanime Meetup". Otherwise we have to ask random strangers if they're there for the meetup, and get funny looks if they are NOT there for the meetup ^^;

Okay there was only ONE person from this Message Board that went to the gathering. Luckily he brought a friend from FanimeCon so it wasn't a total bust. Fun was had, and we're planning to have another gathering this month. I'd like to plan another gathering and have all of you tell me FOR SURE what date and time you all can come. I don't want to have another gathering in Oakland, or have one in Alameda, without anyone showing up.

Therefore if anyone wants to have another gathering for Oakland, OR a new one for Alameda, be sure to CONFIRM what date and time you can make it.

As for the time and place, let's decide on a date we're going to be free on.

I'd like to have at least two other people there from the forums, besides myself this time ^^;

back on topic -

im totally down for a random gathering in your area.

There was a shanking at this corner over here... a random shanking over there... Well, I shanked a dude right there...
