Started making AMVs a few months ago and this is my first time entering them to a contest.

So happy Both of them made it to finals! =]

Good luck to the remaining entries!

Congrats! I totally get it if you don't want to tell us, but what categories did you enter into?

Edit: WOOHOO!!!! Mine made it in!! Hold on Xia, I'm sure they'll email you soon!!

I don't know much about these. They're big publications, looks like 1 was put out per month,  around 350+ pages per magazine/book. They're all in Japanese. It looks like the manga "Girl Friends" was featured in several of these. The stories don't look 100% Shojo-Ai/Yuri but there's definitely a bunch of them.

The full title is "Comic High: Girlish Comics For Boys and Girls". I have a few of them. If anyone thinks they might be interested, I'll list the exact volume #s and such.

Looking to sell @ Fanime, but I can ship if necessary.

I'm the same way, haha. I keep mashing refresh on the forum and pouncing when an email notification goes off. In a way, waiting is kind of part of the fun... since once the con is here, it'll be over before we know it.

Well Jose did say starting tomorrow (meaning the 14th) and over the next few days, so...hopefully by Friday night PDT we will find out? Eh eh?

(Or maybe there are different days they sent out emails to those whose entries made it vs. those who didn't. Or it's randomized or one by one. You never know?)

Oh, don't worry, I understand. With 74 videos, that's a lot of emails to go out whether or not he's started working on it. And the coordinator is a great guy. I just have to vent my crazed excitement+anxiety out in small bursts or I'll flail around on the floor all day. :D

We're finishing up the Judge's Panel and will start sending out the next round of emails tomorrow. This means that you should expect you emails letting you know if you submission has made it into the final show in the next few days. Cheers!

Quickly fans- has Quickly done ok with food supplies in the last couple years?

When I've been to a Quickly, it's been staffed by one or two people. They could easily be overloaded.

Quickly has a Twitter feed. Someone could warn them.

I'm sure they'll have more people on hand than usual or at the very least know that they're going to get swamped, but it won't change the fact that they WILL be swamped. I've actually avoided Quickly's the last couple years because they always have a line going out the door and sometimes down to the sidewalk with next to no standing room while waiting for your order.

I'm pretty sure I can make it to the Friday viewing, since I'll be checking in that morning and picking up my badge. I really don't know if my friends and I can make it in time for Saturday, since we'll be attending a cosplay gathering that day at 1 PM; and that is super close to when viewings show. A shame though, since we'll be dressed up in the exact same outfits for the anime that I made the AMV with. D:

One of the things I look forward to (especially if I am a finalist; or do they manage to screen all the entries somehow during the whole con?) is seeing my work on a big screen and with booming audio. It isn't the same as watching it online (and definitely when you are editing and crying and yelling at the editing program to cooperate...)

LOL! So true about the yelling and crying. When I tried rendering the video for this contest (with something like 12 hours left to render, re-render and upload) my program casually informed me that the 1st render was going to take 10+ hours. Turned out it wasn't using all the RAM to run the render but for that hour I let it run I was so panicked...

I'm not really sure if they screen all of them anymore. Back when I was a semi-finalist rather than finalist there was an individual screening for the semi-finalists, but that was before Stage Zero. I think it's possible that semi-finalists are used as filler at Stage Zero these days. Or maybe that was just when the coordinator of the FMV contest and the director of Stage Zero were one and the same... I'm sure the current FMV Director will know for sure.

QuoteI think buying a ton of water and lugging it to the con is overkill.  Thankfully Fanime Con is held in a modern city with working plumbing and not the Sahara, so there is an abundance of free water for everyone to wet their gills with.  And if you like paying for free things, there are plenty of places to buy the bottled variety as well.  In fact by day 4, water is all that is left in the vending machines.  That, and Diet Coke. ;)

You don't NEED to bring dozens of bottles of water, but even one bottle you can carry around and refill when you come across a fountain is a good idea. I bought a reusable bottle leading up to the con last year for a buck at Walgreens that's made out of a soft material that you can roll up and stick in a pocket or bag when it's empty. It was really handy! And besides, bringing water that you can get for about 10 cents a bottle if you buy it at the right places is way better than shelling out 4 dollars at a vending machine, or 3 bucks for a tiny bottle of ramune from a dealer that may or may not be chilled. To each their own, but that's how I feel about it.

Once someone looked like they were collapsing nearby where i was. They werent with anyone so no one noticed at first.  They sort of fainted so i got someone to get water and we tried fanning them with a very large paper fan. We shook them a little and they woke up. We gave them the water and made sure they would take it easy before we left. Water is critical in a city known to get hot especially when you're in a crowded area with other people conducting heat. Doesn't necessarily need to be water, just make sure you water down sugary drinks because too much sugar can cause you to crash.

That's something important to point out, too. In prior years when the weather in San Jose has been really pleasant (low 70s at most, or even that year it rained) it's still been quite hot in the convention center. The con center has had signs up for the last several years indicating that they keep the AC at a minimum in order to save energy, which you really start to feel when you're near Stage Zero, or at the dealers room. Sometimes I go back to my room just to cool off for a little bit between events.

Good luck! I remember the first time I submitted a video back in 2010 and I was a nervous wreak. Apparently that feeling never really goes away.

I still get freaked out when the contest is actually running. It's so exciting, though.

Do you folks attend the contest both days? I always try to. Seens to how Fanime was the only con I submitted to up until a year ago, seeing your video twice on the big screen (or 4 times, if you run to the other room when it plays there since the categories are scrambled) is too much to resist. :D Plus even though I love going home and downloading the stand-out entries each year, it does feel different seeing it on your computer screen vs a giant screen with a room full of enthused people.

Oh nice! Good to know there's a good amount of comedy and experimental entries this year.

This is my first AMV that I'm entering in contests, so I'm pretty excited and nervous to hear back soon.

Good luck to you! :D

I'm interested to see how many of the Experimental videos will be trailers and how many will be traditional-Experimental-doesn't-fit-in-any-other-category.

I'm pretty sure that's not all of them. What about Under! Where? by Crossfade and the Lip Synching to the song?

I don't know anything about a Crossfade video, but for the lipsyncing one... Are you talking about the one that was almost 100% lip-synched and primarily focused on a band playing throughout the vid? And was it in Experimental? If so, that's the 4th entry in Experimental, "Live!" to Linkin Park's "Bleed it Out". It's on the list. :)

In all seriousness, I haven't attended one yet- but I probably should. Congrats on your awards!

Thank you! And if you do decide to go that would be totally awesome. I'd love to know which videos are yours!

Well... I'm going to hold off on saying anything until the finalist emails are out. I'm sure Jose's working on them as quick as he can but it's not keeping me from reloading the forum every couple of minutes...

Last year we had a pile-up of editors on the forum posting while we eagerly awaited the emails. I wonder if we could hope for the same this year. :D

But wow, 9 years?! Are you going to be at the AMV meet and greet? I would love to meet a veteran and get some in-person advice on how to really step up my game.

I know I shouldn't be as nervous as I feel about the waiting. My last videos made it in and did fairly well. I guess since this is my first year submitting a comedy to Fanime I'm more anxious then I should be. I was going to submit the comedy I did last year, but I was trapped in bootcamp and didn't send it off before the deadline. Apparently I was missed lol.

But it's great to see so many entries and I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic contest!

For what it's worth, I've been entering Fanime's AMV/FMV Contest for... uh... 9 years (?) and if you're anything like me, that feeling never goes away. But that makes it all the more exciting if/when you get the good email. :D

Have you sent your vid anywhere else? Has it done well? That'd probably be a good indicator of  getting in to Fanime. :)

It's good to see that numbers are up overall. Sounds like it'll be a good show!

I'm pretty sure ALL restaurants and stores in (downtown) San Jose know about this little thing called "FanimeCon" where it attracts big businesses to the area. I'll be surprised if they're not prepared for the con and the influx of people. I remember seeing Walgreens on 2nd St with "Welcome FanimeCon" signs on the front windows and some eateries on 3rd St/San Carlos with food promos if you show your badge.

I can go for some In-N-Out right now...

Aye, I suppose you're right. In my experience the only shortages are in the 1st year of the eateries "embracing" Fanime with offers. Like that bento box Psycho Donuts did two years ago. Line around the block and utterly wiped out within hours, if I remember right. Last year's selection was significantly better and they still had bentos when I went.

Fanimecon banner or no, though, it didn't keep customers from blatantly stopping and staring at a King Dedede cosplayer that stopped by. :P

Quickly fans- has Quickly done ok with food supplies in the last couple years? I last went there at the con maybe 2, 3 years ago and by Saturday night they'd completely sold out of the more gaijin-friendly foods like teriyaki chicken. It was their first year doing their 24-hour promotion so I'm guessing they got more swamped than they expected. Has that happened recently?

Dealers Room / Re: arm cushions
May 12, 2013, 02:25:16 PM
I'm not quite sure what you mean by arm cushions. Are you referring to those wrist pad/supports for keyboards and mice, perchance? (The mouse ones tend to be particularly fanservicey.)

Dealers Room / Re: Dealer's Hall Location?
May 12, 2013, 02:23:03 PM
I've never been to the bubble-thing. I always thought it looked cool! Can we get there from inside the con center (is there a hall/path or something?) Or do you need to go outside first?
