Title: Music Fest?
Post by: recomet15 on May 27, 2005, 05:53:08 PM
Where exactly will Music Fest be held? And will it cost extra to get inside? Meaning, if I paid to get into Fanime, will I have to pay to get into Music Fest too?

MusicFest is at 6:30 in the Civic Auditorium. I don't think you have to pay; Your registration should cover it. Atleast, that's how it has been at the other cons.

Unfortunately it was too close to the convention to fill it with anyone and get it coordinated in time. We still have:

Maria Yamamoto
Kumiko Kato
Ramen & Rice
and ZZ!

It's free to everyone with a FanimeCon badge. The show starts at 7:00 pm across the street at the Civic Auditorium.

I bailed from half when R&R were done. Very good! And they had those big overhead screens so those who wanted to jump in front did not obscure the view for those sitting. I think it was nice to let people to rave a little in front, AFAIK R&R like that. Tony, pass them my thanks for coming, pretty please? Aggregate with other fans is fine :-)

ahhh man, you missed out on the zz performance......they rocked up the house pretty damn good....

it's a shame everyone jacked the merchandise so quickly at the end......I wanted to buy their cd.

Hopefully they'll have some around within the next couple of days.

They were very good, but I still didnt go to the pit for some weird reason. I should have gone to it because it had awsome energy. The vocalist was doing crazy mc'ing. I loved him.

I don't know if anyone had taken pictures of ZZ because I don't think they were allowed when they performed? I don't really remember what the rules were actually. I was too busy going crazy to their music. Awesomeness. I would love to see ZZ again.

i sat up front but couldn't get 'into' it. who cares of pictures were allowed or not; a million and a half people had video recorders, camera phones, and digital cameras out anyways. i would have taken some pics too if i hadn't forgotten my stuff at home.

Yeah I would like to thank the Fanime people for a smoothly run Music fest. It moved very fast. It was too short almost because of the last minute band drop.

I also liked it better on Saturday night. Better crowd energy.

And the adition of a pit this year was very cool. The enegy in the pit for ZZ was f-ing awesome.

I wanted one of their CD's but the table was slammed by the time I got to it.

I've had some experience with covering concerts featuring bands from Japan.  Ususally, with indie bands, the record labels aren't so strict with photo policies.  With major record labels, the photo policies are a lot more strict.  ZZ is with AVEX, and they are one of the strictest labels when it comes to fan photography.  Usually, AVEX only lets their own photographers shoot their bands.

In general, the major record companies do not like big, expansive photo galleries done by fans.  After I shoot a show, all of my usable photos go to my press outlet and only a few get chosen for an article.  The rest never see the light of day.  I have them, but I just don't put them up for legal reasons.  I read the photo policy for Music Fest, but left the camera in the hotel room anyways.

Wah! I wanted to go to the Lava Lounge to see them, and I probably would've driven down there if I hadn't had any finals!! GAH! How was the audience reception?? How big was the crowd??

And yes, Sotaro-san is HOT. His voice is AMAZING. I can't believe how powerful his voice really is during a live performance. He totally blew me away with his vocals. I'm a sucker for a guy with an amazing voice.

Actually, yes I did. XD; In Japanese too... my friend was too busy laughing at me becuase I was shaking and laughing while I was trying... ah yes. Then my DAD called, cause I had to go...but i yelled "DAD I'M TRYING TO PROPOSE I'LL CALL YOU LATER BYE!" ahahhaha man... it was really funny though. *HAS NO SHAME!* oH, i told him he was good looking first...

then during the picture taking, it was my turn and like, EVERYONE (the band) moved away so that sotaro and i could take a picture... but i kinda wanted everyone...so i did that first, then with sotaro... i was so excited that i was holding their poster upside down at first..

...then everyone (especially my friend) was cracking up at me.

Haha, I actually would just like to see the ZZ pictures because most of the Fanime pictures that I've seen are all starting to look the same >__> I wouldn't mind looking at your xanga too, though, since I also have one, haha xD

Anyway, to get back on to the topic...it seems not a lot of people really enjoyed Kato Kumiko's performance. I honestly thought her dancing was cool, but there was something about her vocals that was really lacking. Granted, I know how hard it really is to dance and sing at the same time, but I'd rather hear a powerful voice at the expense of great dancing. But she was v. cute.

Awesome pictures, hahaha xD Who was the guy who was helping you translate what you wanted to say? When I actually talked to Sotaro during their autograph signing on Sunday, he thought I was Japanese, haha! That was really funny xD

I think she did well with the last song she performed. It seemed that she was really, really nervous before, but when she got to her last song, I think she calmed down a bit, and the vocals reflected that. And hm...she performed right after Ramen & Rice, and so that was a tough act to follow because they did sooo well in hyping the crowd up.

I didn't have enough money to get anything other than their Generation Hip Innocence CD+DVD thing. I wanted to get a poster, but I was totally broke LOL. But I really enjoy the CD alot! As soon as I get some funds, I'm buying their other CDs. I really, really hope they do come back to the US again soon. I wish I were at A-Kon! GAH.

During the Kato Kumiko performance, another thing that I was interested in watching was the audience reaction. What I saw didn't surprise me much, but the most excited people near the front were the guys LOL. I don't know how many times I heard a few fellows scream, "Shake it!!!"

I don't know if its in your best interests to blatantly post that you are going to participate in internet piracy. Especially on the bulletin board of the event that the artists of the cd that you are about to pirate performed at.

Just as a heads up, many people DO check these forums and some of them ARE people that may want you to take responsibility for your actions.

Regardless, I personally find it strange when you are "supporting" the band by "pirating" their music. Although Im sure as a fan of ZZ you want as many people to listen to their music, and its not like the cd's are readily available in the states.

However, perhaps you could have phrased it in a "not so blatantly illegal way"

Its great to hear that ZZ has gained the support of fans in the US that are willing to take the time to spread their music, but don't get yourself into trouble with the law doing so.

Hrm, I didn't want to push and shove my way to the front because quite frankly,  I know how it feels to get shoved and I don't like it one bit ^^; It was upsetting to see that there were a few of us who were waiting patiently while people cut in front....I thought it just caused a  hectic atomosphere, and I felt a little bad for the people running the table because of all the craziness that ensued immediately after the concert. Looked quite stressful to try to get everyone in order with no one really listening...

Hrm, I was a little distracted though when I saw Sotaro-san chillin by the table, only to have a ton of young females rush to him, hahaha.  Poor guy, having to fight off all that jailbait, haha xD

Anyway, it really is sort of hard to get people to buy CDs, especially when they know you've got the albums. And in comparison to the prices of domestic Dual Discs, laying down over $30 bucks for one CD+DVD import set seems like a hefty price for those who aren't used to it. Most of the people I've shown my little ZZ DVD to really love what they've heard and seen, but they really aren't willing to lay down the $35+ bucks for the G.H.I 2-disc set. Instead, they visit my house to listen to the CDs and watch the PVs, haha. The problem is trying to get those people to understand that spending that money only helps support the artists and shows that there is support for Japanese music here in the US.  The main problem seems to be affordability...

As an active consumer of Japaense CDs and DVDs, it does get a little tiring when people who I know won't buy the CDs keep asking me to burn them copies. It really doesn't seem fair that I'll spend hundreds while people want this stuff for free.  It's not like it's impossible to afford...If you put like maybe a couple of dollars away every other day instead of buying that ice cream cone or something, you can buy a CD once or twice a month at least. I guess it'll all depend on just how much you like an artist though...

Puwahaha I've babbled too much.   :P

The show was awesome last night! They played a bunch of my favorite songs, too, which was exciting. Didn't think they were going to play "Step Foward" but when they did, I was so happy!!! The whole intimate club feeling was damn cool, and they were giving it their all even though it was a pretty small space.  It would be awesome if they came back again for MusicFest!!! Seeing them again only reminded me of how amazing they really are <33

I would like to know that as well. They were the best act last year.
Title: Music Fest?
Post by: Tony on March 29, 2006, 02:31:25 PM
Long story short: they were, indirectly, and then a tragically hilarious sequence of events led to the current situation. The long story is a PR nightmare, and so I won't talk about it. But some mistakes and misinterpretations were made, and it suffices to say that this sort of situation won't happen again.

Just so you know, the resources for MusicFest are hardly unlimited... there are a ton of little details that add up quickly, especially considering these artists can't just take a Greyhound down to the Civic and crash at a friend's place. And there's only so much time for performances; we're even building Stage One so that each of the six bands can get some time in to play.

That said, we're really doing something pretty revolutionary this year. Six bands on two stages over three days... and they're pretty cool bands. (Goofy Style has been stuck in my head for weeks, for example, and I'm looking forward to Guitar Vader and Swinging Popsicle as well. Just look! (http://www.fanime.com/musicfest/)) With Stage One, there will be a seriously intimate club atmosphere - you'll be able to get right up and touch them, practically. And you can even get their music for 99 cents a track online if you like 'em - no having to buy expensive import CDs.

Eeps, it sounds like something really bad happened between MusicFest and AVEX o_O;; So does that mean that because of all that trouble, that ZZ (or any AVEX artist for that matter o_O) won't be able to come back to MusicFest at all in the future or only for this year?

...I would like to point out that everyone can also get A LOT of ZZ's tracks for .99 cents/song online through iTunes Music Store (if you buy the internet-only albums - 3 of them are available in the US, 4 in Japan - they come with bonus talk sessions with the band o_O;;  ), so you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for their import CDs either LOL. AVEX is pushing to make their artists' music more available in the United Sates through iTunes. LOL, they're really doing their best to make it hard on the competition o_O;;; You can get stuff by ZZ, dream, m-flo, Hiro, m.o.v.e....all for 99 cents/song o_O; or ten bucks/album  o_O;;

I couldn't help to add some clarification about the bands that will be playing the MusicFest this year. First of all this will be the first and the last time these bands all appear on the same stage together. Why? Because they are all headliners in Japan. Not to mention that they are all playing completely different styles of music. When ZZ plays in Japan they play in some of the exact same places that all of the bands appearing at Musicfest play at.

Guitar Vader - These guys were signed with Sony until they broke off to form their own label. Hexstatic from the U.K made a video using a remix of  Guitar Vader's "Perfect Bird" featuring Astro Boy. I'm sure if you do some searching you can find the video. It was on MTV U.K. Speaking of which, the last time Guitar Vader played outside of Japan every  show was sold out. This is their first chance to come to America. They have a huge underground fanbase in and outside of Japan thanks to their appearances in Room Mania , Jet Set Radio and anime soundtracks. These guys are no minor act.

Swinging Popsicle - These guys were signed with Sony as well and have sinced moved on to a lesser known but less demanding label where they can make the music they want. They have been produced by the same producer of MISIA and when they play in Japan it's always packed with famous members of other bands ala The Brilliant Green etc.

Up Hold - These guys are one of the first bands to make HardCore popular in Japan. They have played in all of the big festivals in Japan with bands like Static X, Sepultura, Pantera etc. Not to forget their appearances on various anime soundtracks etc. These guys are not slouches. Of course they are signed with a major label.

I could go on and on about all of the bands that will be appearing at the show. I just want to dispel the idea that the bands playing MusicFest this year are just average. The other 3 Goofy Style, miami and Poplar are just as equally awesome in some way. I cannot wait to see the reactions on everyones faces when they see these bands perform live. I have seen them all and they are all awesome. I just hope that everyone gives them a fair chance. I think you are all going to be blown away and I hope that the bands are able to make some new fans.

Hi Guys--

Here's the official press release on the Fanime line-up. mothercoat spells their name in all lowercase, but they are a top-shelf rock band! Check them out on myspace for samples of their songs (full length songs coming soon!)

Dave
Japan Files Press

LAST MINUTE LINE-UP CHANGE
BRINGS RED-HOT JAPANESE ROCK BAND
MOTHERCOAT TO FANIME FOR U.S. DEBUT!

Due to the hospitalization of Guitar Vader founder and guitarist Shozo Ujuan, the pioneer band has withdrawn from Fanime MusicFest 2006 as Ujuan recovers in Tokyo.

"We're very disappointed at this sudden change because we've all been looking forward to playing live for our American fans for so long. But once Ujuan's better, we'll be back to rock them harder than ever. Guaranteed." Says Steve Laity, Guitar Vader's keyboardist and spokesperson for JapanFiles.com.

Coming to the rescue is one of the Japanese rock scene's most successful live bands, mothercoat. mothercoat has been one of JapanFiles.com's consistent top-sellers, and they carry a fan following in Tokyo second-to-none.

Known for their on-stage intensity and their wide-ranging musicianship, mothercoat was the first and only choice to match the audience's expectations for Fanime MusicFest 2006.

"No one ever leaves a mothercoat show feeling the same. They're electric and just plain unstoppable," continues Laity, who personally asked the band to attend on behalf of Guitar Vader.

More info on mothercoat can be found at www.japanfiles.com.
