Well, due to the appearant success of
the Black and White Ball, by popular demand, will be back in 2008! I would like to thank everyone who attended in 2007 and will be working very hard to make sure that 2008 is just as fun as 2007 was. This coming year, we may see some changes to the ball however. As many of you noticed, the room was packed for the vast majority of the Ball which made ballroom dancing difficult to say the least. In an effort to increase the amount of space dancers have on the floor, we
may be implementing some kind of capacity check. If the room is too full, we may stop allowing people into the Ball until such time as someone leaves etc. or we might go with a dress code. We may also be moving to a bigger room but nothing is final yet.
Ok. Now that the boring stuff is out of the way,
I will be taking song requests prior to the event, but will not be able to take them at the time of the event. If you would like to request a song, please post here and email me at
[email protected]. Additionally, I can't guarantee that all requests will be played. Songs will have to be ballroom dancable. If you can provide an mp3 of the song you would like to request, that will guarantee that at least you have a shot at getting it played. I may post the playlist before the con - or not. I will have to see how much time I have :P
Lastly, I am curious how people liked the lessons that were offered in 2007. We are considering trying to increase the number of lessons and possibly styles for 2008. If you would like to learn a specific type of ballroom dancing, speak up! Maybe we can put together a lesson. This event is, like the convention, by fans for fans so I would like any feedback and/or suggestions on ways to make this event even better.
Update 2/18/08:
The Dress Code is now online on the Fanime website. Please take a look so you are prepared when you arrive.
Update 4/21/08
The Schedule of lessons has been posted on the Fanime website. Please take a look so you can start to plan your weekend!
Last year's BWB was pretty fun, I have to say. I'm looking forward to next years'. ^^
However, I was unable to attend the class. D: I know for quite a lot of people, they didn't appreciate having conga lines and such, since it disrupted the environment of "elegance". Hopefully though, next year will be fun and I'll be able to attend the lessons. ^^
I had planned for 1 conga line during the ball but more than one formed. Still, it's a good song so I may keep it for 2008. Then again, maybe not. As I've said, I'm working on expanding my selection of music.

I don't see why anyone would chose to limit people from comming over being prepared this time and just having it in a bigger room. Is there an issue of something bigger and more important going on in the larger room (s) at that time?

Personally I wasn't able to go to the lessons last year but I know if there is lessons again this year I'll make the time.

There was one song it made sense for and during that song everyone was having fun. After that, when people were forming conga lines for everything, and running around so quick that they didn't even care who they ran into or over, it needed to stop.
My only suggestion apart form all that is have a set dresscode. A lot of people were really confused about what they should wear. I'm not saying it needs to be strick or even inforced but if there was just clear what the recommended attire theme was, I think people would really apreciate it. We got the colors but beyond that everyone was a bit lost. Should you wear formal ball atire, a cosplay outfit, a mask?
I had fun at the ball.
Bigger room would be good, though- it got pretty damned cramped after the fist half-hour or so (and swelteringly hot).
Wasn't able to make it to the lessons, but I'm going to try my hardest for next year.
Conga line... was briefly amusing, but they knocked over stuff and nearly ran me over a few times, not to mention made it near impossible to get across the room during the songs.
Some 3/4 music would be nice, I think mostly swing type stuff was played- where were my waltzes? :)
ummm......I'm new here at the forum and at this fanime convention. So could you guys help me out?? what exactly is the black and white ball?

Just think of it as your formal/classical dance where people are usually in a suit or a dress.
Dances include Samba, Waltz, and etc... =P

D= I can't do those dances darn..
Don't worry! They offered a crash course last year, and I'm sure they're planning on having a couple of classes this year too. The basics of the dances aren't too difficult.
And even if you can't make it to the classes, don't worry. Just go and have a good time!
Just slow dance... I did that all the time!!
so.. is there like a certain dress to follow or is it like.. cosplay good. o.o I mean I'm planning to go in a lolita dress would that be fine? ???

The BWB staff might be considering enforcing the black-and-white themed garb this year, but what you choose wear (whilst considering the dress code) is entirely up to you. Cosplay is pefectly fine, so is just black pants and a white shirt.

enforcing it to the classic black-and-white themed garb might be a bit too much: having it set to a simple "formal dress attire" rule would be a good choice and flexible as well.
Not everyone owns/has your general B&W ball attire, so formal attire(meaning a simple dress for the ladies, and your regular suit for the guys) would be within most peoples wardrobes, but classic B&W ball clothes would be very much encouraged.
Cosplay would probably be fine but nothing extravagant, due to the risk of it probably getting ruined/damaged while dancing/moving through the crowds.
also, nothing super extravagant; this somewhat falls under the cosplay point that it might get damaged/ruined(ladies, leave the 15-layer dress at home, plzkthnx) during the ball.

Since I'm pretty nice. I'll dance wit u. And girls are welcome to come to me and ask. I'm the dude wit glasses (to make things easy, just look for the guy that looks like brain age guy).
It's kinda funny my girlfriend told me it's okay for me to dance wit other partner even though I feel guilty sometimes.
It's really cool because all the people that are cosplaying as something bleach are technically wearing within the dress code, unless it has to be somewhat formal. Otherwise, power to the Bleachers.
As far as a dress code is envolved, I would suggest that black and white is prefered, although not required. What I think everyone should have is a classic MASK. How much fun would that be? =D Everyone's in cosplay and they have a mask to boot. Nothing fancy, but it'd be fun.
originally, i was going to try to have everyone wear masques last year but unfortunately, there just wasn't budget enough to provide in case people forgot one. this being the case, i nixed the idea for last year. we're in much the same situation this year but please, by all means, wear a masque. i think they look cool and gives an air of mystery to the event which can make it so much more fun!
The Laughing Man is going to get Fancy

oh u mean like in bioshock?! 8D......except with the dangerous plasmids and big daddys coming after u. that would be very kewl. hmm makes me wonder now about this costume idea i could try out....
anyways...uhh yea i never attended to this cuz i never had a costume that was jst black and white...untill next month. making my edward Elric costume and i can jst take off the red coat walah! black and white costume ready and to go. but uhhh ^^'''' hehe i am not a very good dancer and i will be attendening the crash course lesson. jst need to courage to ask girls to dance with me ^^''''''''''*gulp*
I had an amazing time dancing with my friends at the ball. I also stayed in costume the entire time because I was wearing all Black and white. Next year, I will have more friends that will be joining Fanime for the first time. I'm pretty sure they will enjoy this BWB. = D since it was such a great success and all 2007.
I might check it out, it depends on my girlfriend if she wants to check it out.
I think this dance sounds fun. I have attended the formal Dance last year at ACEN and it is quite the same. Hmm of to email the big cheeses whom is in charge of all this.
oh. Sounds fun! I'll probably attend this year too.
I tried sending a huge email with suggestion and what not, but the addy to send such stuff didn't work and my letter was bounced back to me. Does anyone know of the appropriate contact email addy for those in charge of the B7W Ball?

[email protected] as well! :)
I had fun with the ball. The crash courses were appreciated. They were fun and pretty easy to pick up. I'm looking forward to going again and I'll probably wear my Tuxedo Mask costume like last time. It fits all qualifiers! :D
the ball sounds cool but are u allowed to wear ur cosplay outfit to the ball?
i will be posting a more specific dress code in the next few weeks, but for now, here's a general idea for you of what i'm looking to do.
no jeans and/or t-shirts
no sandals or flip-flops
suits/tux for the gents would be ideal, but a dressy shirt and nice slacks would be acceptable.
ladies, formal dresses/skirts and blouses would be appropiate but please, try to keep the hem of the dress approximately to the knees at least. again, please try to keep the outfit on the formal side.
cosplayers, please try to keep your cosplay on the formal side for this event. also, if possible, please leave any props you can in your rooms.
lastly, i encourage everyone to leave as many of your belongings as possible somewhere secure (preferably not in the dance room) as we will not be having a coat check this year and can not guarantee the safety of your belongings.
No coat check? :/ Hmm. Well, does this mean that it will be in another room, and is there any word on which room that will be? Or was the coat check area just eliminated to open up more space?
I still need to get those music suggestions to you, I totaly forgot until just now.
we are eliminating the coat check because of liability issues. this was not my choice, but i do understand the reasons behind the move.

i was wondering if the dresses HAVE to be up to the knee... because my cosplay partner's skirt goes all the way to the ground and kinda has a small trail and we were REALLY looking forward to the ball...
It says "at least" to the knees, meaning the that knees is the shortest it can go, but it can be longer. Though, I don't reccomend having any sort of fabric touching the ground or trailing on the ground for the ball, and I know this from experience. (I also don't reccomend a 10 foot train for the convention, thankfully I didn't wear that to the ball, but that's another story altogether...)
oh okie, i see. thanks! i'll try to pin her dress up so it won't be on the gound or something. >> <<
WAIT THIS THREAD FINALLY STARTED!!?? AAHHHH!!!! I DUNNO WHAT TO WEAR!!! X___X;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
I must make up something quick!!!!!!! XD
I had a blast last year, I was shock as to see who was there, you'll literally meet majority of your buddies there so definately check it out! it was really wonderful! as far as what I'm going to wear, hahaha my g/f and I have something nice plotted up! ^__^
okay i should put this on my notes for discussion on "what i want from fanime"...
there are three things that bothers me....
1) there are some anime shows i recall that has formal uniforms, do they count? (i rememebr code gease was one of them, and theres this GUY from gundam seed, who wears a mask but I DON"T wANT TO BE HIM!). somehow the uniforms i look at makes them feel more...mature and Enchanting (in my words)..
2)Idon't want to admit this but It feels like its required to have a girlfriend..I wanan participate this, but I would feel really left out.....I guess what im trying to say is uhm...never mind....
3) . . .

Though it's a Black and Whitle Ball, I don't thing formal is a must a I got in with just my costume though I am going to dawn a tie just for that event, and if you can't find a date no problem if you have a outfit formal or withwise that rocks then the ladies will come to you, a lot of women wanted to dance with me, well lets just say the Laughing Man more than me, but still it feels just as good
hmmm...I was kind of scared when I went into the Black and White ball...It seemed the crowd was a little young for me, but hey what the heck I gave it a try... :o Mainly saw a bunch of making out scenes...kept me entertained the short while I was actually there....Maybe this year I will do a He Is My Master costume...Black and White of course hehehehe

I SOO LOVE HE IS MY MASTER TT!!!>.
the only option for me to cosplay in formal as of now....is Frederick Chopin.
I know alot of people don't know who he is, but he looks the most formal i can think of to go to the black and white ball....
Frederick Chopin (https://forums.fanime.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.filefront.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2007%2F06%2Fcharacter_chopin.jpg&hash=2637016116e51aefdfdc8184501f95784db36222)

I have a gf to bring along to the ball. But since I am taking a Ballroom class at my city college, I'll be nice and you're welcome to ask me to dance wit me and I can teach you some basic stuff (she told me she wouldn't mind).

A proper "date" is not needed by any means. Last year, I went by myself and stayed the entire time, just dancing with random people and hanging out. I probably had the best time I've ever had at Fanime, and I went alone. :D
I hope this black and white dance is better than the one at ACEN 2007. Was'nt too pleased with the music selection and lack of folks actually...well , DANCIN on the floor. Not sure what to wear either. It would be fun to do a formal cosplay, but then again I'm not quite sure how much more clothing/cosplay outfits can I really squeeze neatly into my luggage(flying in from Utah). Anyone out there have some formal suggestions for a gal size 14? I know I am not petit and I rather wear something more suited for my figure. No since in looking like a stuffed pig in a blanket @_@. I have the whole mask thing taken care of if I decide to wear one. Bought beautiful mask at a costume shop a few years back. I also have the whole date thing covered, or so I think. That is unless my friends become super popular on the floor.

I am not sure of a certain cosplay...but a rockabilly dress...meaning like a 40/ 50's style dress would be flattering. They are usually tight fitting but in all the "right" places. Just a suggestion....And yes you can pull off a tight dress without looking like a "pig in a blanket" I think people will look more stuffed into an outfit if they try to wear clothing that is too baggy. Something sexy and probably knee length like a pencil skirt would definately be cute as well. Just make sure it is a great fit...I have friends who are size 7's but try to fit into size 5 pants and you see that roll hanging, eventhough they are thin...same applies to my friend who are size 16+. As long as the item fits you then you will look great ;D Hope that helps and didn't scare you...hahahah :-\
i will have suggestions for attire up on the website shortly. i've got a few people to run some things by and then i think it's golden

I'd like to see if the DJ can play "Yuria...eien ni" by Crystal King (The first ED of Hokuto no Ken) when the slow dancing part comes along.
if you can email it to
[email protected] it might make it into the mix
Does it have to be Japanese? If not, then I'd like I Do (Cherish You) and You are my Everything by 98 Degrees.
Also, I wasn't at Fanime last year, so I was hoping (if you don't already teach it) that you could do lessons for the Tango. That's sounds like it would be fun to learn and dance to.
If you do teach that dance, then I believe a good song to go with it would be Objection by Shakira, Bailamos by Enrique Inglesias (actually, that song would probably go better with a different dance...), all I really know about the tango is that it's a 4 step dance, generally, so I'm just mentioning songs that have a 4 step beat to it. If I'm just talking nonsense, that works too. But these are three songs that I would like to hear at the ball.
I sent you an e-mail with the mp3 and song names/artists.
I really love to go. But what is the dress code. Please tell me. Um... i hope there are some hip hop music. I dont know how to do slow dance or anything. Im also single, so I will be there myself. Well um... what is the dress code going to be? Please let me know. Thx.
mmm.... i wont be staying long. Cant someone email me and tell me about it. Thank you so much. Its
[email protected] Thx.

This is a classical ball, so no there probably won't be any hip hop music at the ball (for that type of music you're looking for the Fanime Rave Dance).
There should be a class offered to learn the basic dance steps. That was how I met my dance partner for the night last year. The classes were very helpful too, even for someone like me who has two left feet (my partner was a much better dancer than me so that helped too :D )
the dress code should be up in the next week or so. just putting the finishing touches on it.
Question on dress length! My sister's cosplay is a short dress, but it also has another piece of floor-length fabric covering the sides and back. Is it ok?
Also, am i right in that nice women's boots count as high heels?
on the page it says this is on sunday at 7pm.
is that final?

Yeah it is final.
I'll think about showing up it depends on my girlfriend if she wants to check it out.
ok....I have read in different places about different facts about this Ball.
Could someone please tell me concrete info about the:
date
time (beginning to end)
location
rules?
thankx
Date: Sunday.
Time: I think around 7.. And I've heard it gone way past midnight but I'm not quite sure.
Location: I've heard it was at the convention center itself, or maybe the building infront of it, but I haven't seen it anywhere officially.
And the rules of the general convention apply to the Black And white ball. There's a dress code too.
Other than that... Yeah.
That's all I know about the ball.
Feel free to correct me.
the info about the ball is on the website under the events section. i should have the lesson info up in the next coupple of days.
Just wondering... Is it MANDATORY that you go to the lessons? I'd love to attend but the lessons part sounds boring... =\
It's not Mandatory. You can still go to the ball without going to lessons.
Thanks so much!
Last year the ball was held on site. It was in a room on the Marriott side of the convention center.
As someone that doesn't know "classical" dances I'd recommend the lessons. I felt pretty lame when all these guys asked me to dance and most of them knew what they were doing and I was stumbling around.
can I request a cross-step waltz mixer at some point? Its a lot of fun and everyone gets to dance with everyone else >:D
btw this will be my first anime convention ever. xD I can't believe you guys have a ballroom dance, thats so awesome. (I just started to learn social dances this year)
requesting some good old james brown/ funk music. :)
I'm wondering about the dress code....
I know it says dress up-y..but how dress up-y??
I got this dress today and it looks more dressy when i'm wearing it -_-

I also did a few alterations so the cleavage isnt EXTREME
but anyways, is this okay? What is everyone else wearing?

yea, im pretty sure that's fine
I'd like to request "Don't be afraid" by Elisa Fiorillo from the MGS3 soundtrack
I didn't go to this last year, but I am really looking forward to it this year. I heard there was a ton of swing though, and I'm hoping it's more well rounded than that XD. I've been taking ballroom classes for the past year and it's time for some argentine tango and salsa outside of school~
I liked the dance lessons from last year a lot. it was way fun. just wish i hadmore time to practice.
practice you say? well then, come to the lessons! we have several and there will be plenty of time for practice at the lessons.
So has the location been finalized? Is the ball in the same room as last year?
the ball will be in the J on the hilton side of the convention center.
Quick question--are the lessons going to be held in the same place as the ball?

Yes they are! :D Feel free to look at the downloadable schedule on the website to find lessons you're interested in taking.
Just wondering, is it acceptable to wear your cosplay outfit to the lessons?
Is it okay if I wear a dress above the knee?

Yes, cocktail length is fine! :D but no miniskirts. It's a bit hard to stay appropriately covered while twirling gracefully on the dance floor.
I really liked that there were so many lessons this year, it seemed like people for the most part knew what they were doing out on the dance floor. I also felt that enforcing a dress code is a godo idea. Everyone looked really nice.
How do you guys not understand that this needs a HUGE room. I'm glad this year's room is bigger than last year but clearly not enough. How long were people stuck standing in line? When I left the line still went all the way down the hall and then curved. Bad planning :(
the ball was really awsome! they played great music for classic ball room dancing such as the tango the chacha, the salsa, waltz ect. they even had swing which was totally cool. there were lots of styles to dance too. It was nice too because you didnt really need to be an expert dancing these things. though it might have been nice to know the moves a little more you didnt really need to. I really enjoyed it. I danced with my friends and had an opportunity to talk with some of the people that were more experienced with the classic ball room dances. from what i saw people were also very respectable about asking each other to dance. if you got rejected it wasnt a down right denying. it was much more respectable.
i also really liked the dress code. it was strict but not too strict. i liked that it was ment for an actual ballroom dance, formal attire and the like. very nice. it made it so that the people who wanted to be there. could be there! and made it so the event was formal and not raving. very nice!
i think what could have been done differently, was a bigger room. it was very very popular in the sense that the line was out the door and around the corner to get in and only certain people could get in. alot of the times the people who did get in, staid for the whole thing or nearly the whole thing so im sure alot of people who wanted to dance didnt get in. i got luck in that i was there early and got in early. but others werent so fortunate.
i think that a bigger room would also allow for the security to be less rude. i got a little fed up with the security because when i sat down for only one dance they thought i was sitting there for the entire thing which wasnt the case! i was simpley sitting down for one dance because i needed a chance to breathe. and i know there were people sitting there for a while but i think they shouldve been allowed too (another reason for a larger room, some people like to watch the dance) and then there was another time where we went out for water and we got told to leave...then why is there water outside!? so i think over all a bigger room would be better i know hotels have actual ballroom dance areas....we need to use soemthing like that so that everyone who wants to come CAN.
over all it was an amazing ballroom dance. and i can NOT WAIT for next years! this time i'll be better prepared with a nice dress rather then my academy uniform (though it was still an amazing uniform, just i would have liked something a little dressier for such a formal occasion). it was nice to be able to go to an actual formal dance. i really enjoyed myself. <3

Apologies! We moved it to a room that was 50% bigger and even removed extra equipment in order to expand the size... but it still wasn't enough. We're looking at making the room an additional 50% larger for next year, but now our problem is finding a big enough dance floor... in any case, it's definitely something we're working on!
This years Black and White ball was beautiful, wonderful music and friendly fans and dancers.
However, I think the way that the staff handled the over crowding of the room was outright appalling. Denying people the basic necessities of water, and restroom facilities in order to allow more people in, and snipping at people who are sitting, is asking for not only a law suit, but an ambulance. And not mentioning it in the program or to the people who were in the lines before the dance started is a really low class move.
There was an absolute disregard of respect, and safety for the attendants.
I understand the thought behind it, monitoring people flow and allowing more people to come in to enjoy it, but this was the best you could think of? Smoking out attendees with dehydration during incredibly strenuous activity in a poorly ventilated room and
the need to relieve ones self? I wasn't aware a POW camp experience came with my exhibitor ticket.
Obviously the room wasn't big enough, it may never be. Why don't you instead focus on a system that cycles people through. Group numbers, so one group is scheduled from 7-8 another 8-9 another 9-10. A system as opposed to rude questionably legal activities. I've seen this work beautifully during other cons, and helps prevent too large of lines from forming. Even if you don't like that idea, surely there's another way to handle the situation.

XD Yeah, I did hear that some people got sent to the back of the line when they went out for water, and I was like FREAKIN' out because I wanted water but I didn't want to wait...but when I got thirsty there was not problem, so idk what happened with that, maybe just a rogue staffer wanted to be a jerk.

well honestly speaking and i'm sorry if this sounds bad. but i don't think that many people care about a dance floor,i myself wouldn't even mind if was in a carpeted, hardwood floor or cement ground. i dont think it really matters as long as you have the music, formal wear, and people dancing
Wouldn't a hardwood floor or something like that with no carpeting be better for dancing? (has images of heels caught in the carpeting ???)
I like thesmallwonder's suggestion of cycling people through: "Why don't you instead focus on a system that cycles people through. Group numbers, so one group is scheduled from 7-8 another 8-9 another 9-10." Or a similar idea.
