After the 2010 and 2011 Cosplay Battles were a fun success, it's time to change the thread for 2012! All are welcome, but those who sign up ahead of time here or on cosplay.com will have priority in turn order.

First of all, let me make one thing clear: even though the name is "Cosplay Battle" there will be absolutely no fighting. I repeat, violence will not be tolerated. If anyone is acting in a manner that threatens the safety of the other event participants, they will be asked to leave.

I had to make that absolutely clear before we begin. Now to explain the event itself.

I saw this done a few years back at another convention, and had a great time participating, so I thought I'd bring it to Fanime. So credit for the idea goes to the people who came up with it, although I don't know who you are or when it started.

The basic idea of the event is a tournament-style matchup of cosplayer vs cosplayer in three-pose battles -- three pictures in which the two look like they're fighting, then a "winner" is determined.

The two competitors come up and act like they're in the middle of a battle, freezing in place for pictures. Once this repeats three times, whoever feels they have "lost" will go down, and the winner is determined. Depending on the amount of participants, we may have the winners move on to later rounds, but that's probably unlikely.

Of course, any characters from any series are welcome. You don't have to be from a fighting series, or even be a character who can fight at all. You can be the tiniest character in a comedy series and still take on a super-powerful fighter and win, as long as the poses are right.

Example: Goku (Dragonball Z) vs Chiyo-chan (Azumanga Daioh)
- Goku begins powering up, while Chiyo kicks him in the knee. Freeze for pictures. (Remember, it can look like Chiyo is kicking Goku, but actually hitting the cosplayer is against the rules.)
- Goku fires a Kamehameha, and Chiyo ducks to avoid it. Freeze for pictures.
- Chiyo and Goku charge for one final attack. Freeze for pictures.
- Chiyo-chan wins! Goku lies defeated. Victory pose.
- Goku and Chiyo thank each other for a good, fun match, and the next competitors come up.

(To any Fanime staff: If there is anything about this event that needs changing, please let me know, but rest assured that this is entirely safe. I can understand if calling it "Cosplay Battle" is worrying, but as I've stated many times, it's all posing, there is no actual fighting.)

Given that the date and time is still undetermined, you guys can feel free to let me know what times are good for you. Of course, since we don't know when a lot of things are, it'll take a while before we can find a time that is good for everyone, but time is on my side.

Also, if anyone who signs up here has to leave early, they can let me know ahead of time and we'll have them go early on. For now, thank you both for your interest.

If you want to win, you'll have to work for it. Or be paired up against someone who doesn't mind losing. Or at least not be fooled by absolute hypnosis (bwahaha). And to everyone, thanks for your enthusiasm. Sounds like everyone's pretty clear on the rules, since there've been no questions, which is good. There's still a lot of time until next Fanime (which means we're gonna have to keep this thread alive for a long time, so please keep posting) so we won't have the time/day decided on until people actually know when works for them, nor will sign-ups begin, but please keep me updated on what times seem to be the best.

I didn't see it mentioned, but if your cosplay includes a weapon or tool or device, would you be allowed to pose with it? 

And the poses do not have to be at a distance, but can be actually touching, e.g., Chiyo has Goku in a headlock?

You would be allowed to pose with it, just so long as it's not used in any way that could harm the other cosplayers. Basically, aim where they're blocking, and even then, be careful. (Gotta make sure no one gets hurt, or else not only will there be no cosplay battle the year after, but I fear for my attendance at 2011.) The prop policy should ensure that the props are all safe, but even then, it's posing, so think of it as setting up for any other pose.

Same goes for actually touching. You can plant your fist in the other guy's stomach as long as you're not actually punching, and as long as both parties are okay with it. So Chiyo can have Goku in a headlock as long as it only looks like he's trapped in it, ie. she's not really choking him, and Goku is okay with being in a headlock.

I know, and I was replying in an equally kidding manner, hence my joke about Aizen's absolute hypnosis. But yeah, it would be funny... "Now as he attempts to stab me, I'll just make an illusion so it appears like-" *stab* "Ah crud, I shouldn't have spent so long explaining what it was I was about to do."

Lets just make an exciting cosplay battle. Gr.... Im still think which cosplay to do. :(

Okay, brief update, gonna run this by everyone to see if it makes sense and sounds fair.

Matchups will be decided by order of signing up. First come, first serve, and when you're up, you can chose your opponent or just face the next person on the list. However, if you chose your opponent, it cannot be someone from the same series as you unless they're characters who never have and never will fight.

I figure that this way we can get the most interesting matchups while still allowing people to have freedom in choosing who to face.

The exception is if you've worked out some epic fight poses with a friend ahead of time. If that's the case, then let me know, and I'll make sure you two get to face each other.

Does all this sound agreeable? I don't want to be especially restricting, but I want to be fair to the people that signed up early, and I want the matches to be unique and interesting.

It definitely sounds fun and I do like the idea on the first come first serve along with the not fighting the same series character/ someone they would never fight. I will definitely keep my eye on this thread  :)

Alright, now that some more time has passed and some of the big gatherings are getting times and places set, I'd like to know what times and days people would prefer.

Logically, we'd have the most people on Days 2 and 3, and that's also when the big cosplay gatherings tend to be. So I want it to be at a time when those gatherings are over so we can catch cosplayers and photographers who are still looking for something to do once the epic scale gatherings are over.

Of course, many gatherings don't have a set time yet, which makes sense considering there's still many, many months to go, but at least the days are. So if there's a costume you know you're going to be wearing on one day that you want to use at this, then let me know what day that is.

Or I could do a bit more work on my Turk costume.... or finish work on my pneumatic marshmallow sniper and bring that (minus crucial equipment) as a Fallout wastelander...decisions....save the world.. stay fuzzy....

Again, awesome to see so many people interested. I want to keep this thread alive, so just throwing a question out there:

What costumes, for those of you who know what costumes you'll be bringing, are you planning on using for this? Of course, if they're costumes you also plan on wearing at a gathering, then I'll try to have this on the same day, so you don't have to change quickly to get to it. (But at a different time, of course, since it's hard to be at a gathering and the cosplay battle at the same time.)

I've decided.

Fallout Wastelander.

Provided it's not close to the time of the valve gathering.

Depends on the day really.  If you do this Sunday, I'll be Tsunade (Naruto).  If you do it Saturday (and I lose the weight I'm trying to lose) I'll probably be Nuriko (Fushigi Yuugi).  My only other cosplay is Sophie (Howl's Moving Castle) and all I could really do would be to hold out Calcifer...no much going to happen there.

Always good to see more people expressing interest. As gathering threads are discussing days and times, we'll be able to figure out when the best time for this will be as well. As none/few of you have said any days you'll definitely be able to or not be able to make it, I'll mostly be going off what time fits in with the general gathering schedules best, but if anyone has any specific times they'd prefer, or just a general idea of what day or early/late time slot it should be, now's the time to speak up.

Keep in mind peasants that any unique weapons wielded by any heroes at this gathering are rightly my property and that you are all merely holding them since my Gates of Babylon seems to be having a technical error. Thus if Gilgamesh, King of Heroes, demands to make use of your weapon you shall provide it gladly.

(The above was in character humor and should not be taken seriously. Though Gilgamesh with random weapons from other series would be fun for the battle pics. :P)

If you want to use Gates of Babylon, I'll allow anyone who wants to lend their weapons for the picture. Only for those who are willing, logically. Of course, if an Archer cosplayer comes along and uses Unlimited Blade Works, the same will apply.

In fact it would be funny to photoshop a pic of all the weapons at the gathering floating in mid air behind me while some unfortunate opponent gets "Gates of Babylowned!" (Blame the internet for the joke. :P)

Let's see if we can get some matches lined up ahead of time so we can make best use of our gatehring time. So I will submit my name as an open challenger and my game taunt. (Every fighting character has one :P)

Don't worry, the official signups will be starting soon, and the fights will be ordered according to the signup order. First come, first serve. That way we save time on the organization and we can get those who dedicatedly follow the thread their fights earlier. Just gotta figure out how to fit this in to the gathering schedule best and I'll try to reserve the time slot and begin the signups.

I'm still waiting to find out when exactly the big gatherings will be, so I can fit it into my schedule without interfering with them, plus the big event thing B posted about. As for the where, I figure outside by the fountains, like any other gathering, will probably be the best spot for it.

Well, Saturday's a busy day for me, with the Masquerade and two gatherings(maybe three, yikes!) so I dunno, maybe it can be Sunday or Monday. xD Or Friday..... xP

Staurday -is- quite a busy day ^-^; But personally, I think I should be able to make this even if it is that day. Having it be on Sunday or Friday might be a good idea if a lot of people would be unable to come on Sat. c:

I've been leaning more towards sunday, anyways, so that's probably when it'll be. I know the Naruto gathering is on that day, so this will probably be set after that one.

Not sure I'll attend, Sunday I plan on cosplaying Stein since Friday and Saturday kind of require me to cosplay from 5th Element and BRS (since I have a meet up on Friday and can't be arsed to switch out of Stein for Friday... Too hard to switch back and forth with that cosplay). That being said I may or may not attend on Sunday... I really don't know very good poses for Stein. I'll think on it though.

Okay, I have two announcements.

First, for the time and date! How does Sunday at 2 PM sound to everyone? It's still tentative, since there are a few gatherings without an official time posted, and I may have to change it according to my schedule and everyone else's, but at the moment this seems a good time.

Secondly, now that we're getting this worked out, OFFICIAL SIGN-UPS ARE BEGINNING NOW! I'll make an official list on the first post. Signing up is not necessary to attend, but highly recommended. The order you sign up in will affect the fight order, so the sooner you sign up, the quicker you can have your battle.

Post with your name and character, and I'll add you to the list. If there are two characters from the same series in a row, then I'll have to slip in someone from another series in-between them, but if you have a friend you wish to have your cosplay battle with, please include that in your post and I'll make sure you two are matched up.

Alright, I have sent in the registration, and we've had our location set to the front Hilton side of the convention center lobby. So it's not in the main courtyard, but just to the side; it's the area with plenty of trees, and BSapphire tells me that there's a big spot there perfect for the battle, and another to the side for people waiting for their turn. I've seen some great photos taken at that spot before, so it should be a great location.

@ jobiberry: Considering the event's at 2:00, I don't think it'll conflict with the concert, unless you plan on getting in line reaaaally early. Do you want me to put you down on the list as Eve or Alice?

Are the match-ups determined by signing up order or are we going to redraw match-ups?

The match-order is decided by first-come, first-serve. That is to say, those who sign up first get first pick. You can either chose your opponent from the competitors, or fight the next person in line.

For instance, Heero, you're first on the list, so when we begin, you can select any competitor to fight. However, if you don't have any preference, you'll fight Neo-Zaku, who's second on the list. If you chose to fight him, then the next person to chose will be chococlatte, since you and NZ have had your fight. If you chose to fight someone else, then Neo-Zaku can either fight chococlatte or chose someone else.

But again, that depends on if the CLAMP gathering ends by two (which is probably unlikely, come to think of it). And if I did come, I don't know if I'd show up as Rock Lee or Cardcaptor Sakura. That's a really hard one. Hmm... although, if I want to show up as Lee, I'd have to change first...

@ Eeri-chan: You could fight as Sakura as well, I don't think anyone would mind getting turned into a card and captured by her. If you can't decide, of course, you can always join in the day of without being added to the list here first.

If you could please leave it open that would be kind. This is my first year and I know I will be very overwhelmed >.< but I do like the idea of the duels, lots of fun! Plus, it's right before the Shonen Jump gathering, so we can grab some Jump cosplayers who arrive early and have enough time for people cosplaying from Jump series to get to the gathering once the fight's over.

In response to the mentionings of glomps...

lol. the glomps of death. I've encountered a few crazy glompers in my day as a moggle. It's quite scary when you see them running from across the hall and you know you can't run away fast enough becuase of the sight restictions of the moogle head. I've actually run into a post before trying to escape a glomp and ended up runnign into the poll, then bounceing back, then getting pounced on on the other side by a crazy glomper. lol.

People can show up and join the battles without being signed up ahead of time and just sign up at the time of, but the sign-up list determines the orders of the battles.

Feel lucky for being asked....it's so scary being a Pocky box sometimes that I often almost don't wear it. EVERYONE glomps you, and NOBODY asks. Plus they squish the box not even caring or realizing that the box is only cheap cardboard. T^T So scary...

Only five more days until Fanime Con! (Six if you don't count Day Zero :P) I can't wait to see you all on Sunday so that I may crush you under my boots.  ;D

Ah, I see. That does look fun. I suppose they're sort of similar, with the posing and all, although the goal isn't to hit the other guy's hand, but to have awesome battle scene poses. I'll have to try the Ninja Game some time, though.

That all depends on who you make cry. Normally we'd call the match off, console the person you made cry, and shoot evil glares at you. If it's a grown man who looks like he could crush you with his bare hands, though, then we might give you props. If it's a little girl, I'll punch you in the face.

Guess you've all made a liar of me, because I've added all of you to the sign-up list. Still, anyone who posts to sign up should still check in with me at the battles to make sure I've got you on the list, and so I know you're there. Almost at 30 people, glad to see so many people are interested in these battles!

Since each battle will take 2 people, that's 15 battles, plus any more who show up at-con. That would give us about 3-4 minutes per battle to finish by 3, but I don't think we'll need that long for each match anyways.

Well, I'd say we had a pretty decent turnout. Glad to see all the awesome costumes you guys had, and I hope everyone who attended had fun. Can't wait to see pics from it, you all had some awesome battles!

When I'd be able to host them depends on how my schedule looks, but I think that might very well be doable. And even if one of them gets scheduled for a time I can't make it, someone else can host/referee for it in my absence. If two days sounds good to everyone, then I see no reason not to.

I sadly missed it this year, but i am definately interested in coming next year; Im hoping it might be on Friday (Saturday and Sunday are gonna be busy for me with gatherings).

Okay, another bump to reactivate this thread: since it'll be a two-day event, I figure Saturday and Sunday would be the natural days for it. Would you guys prefer earlier in the day, later in the day, or midday? There'll be a lot of gatherings to compete with, so I'm thinking later in the day would probably be best, but I'm open to suggestions.

those two times are perfect! (one day in one costume and one in the other) that way theres plenty of time til the special events at night too and the gatherings are usually round 12 (or w/e i dont know XD)

_plus plus my bf (hee hee! e w e) will be balthier from ff12 and kite from .//hack so im forcing him to do this too >3~ (i shall beat him with a sexy beam!)

This sounds like a great time (looking at the list right now) and I would really like to get this event listed. I hope you plan to run this for 1 hr each day. I see that a few people may have to be in either the first 1/2 hour or the second 1/2 hour, but it should accommodate people pretty well.

Will this still be located at FHS? PM me parts 1 & 2 and let's get you posted :) I can't wait to see this and hopefully take photos!

Yeah, a lot of the people I've talked to that go as fighting game/general fighting characters seem to want to stick with their genres and gatherings... I'm willing to branch out, I'll do a pose down with a Loli Maid if I have to. ;)

Hi ive never really done this before. I have my only homemade cosplay as Free (man who stole the witches eye) from soul eater. I should be available both days(unless the soul eater gathering is then thin its at 2. (but will lose because he immortal but sucks at attacking i think XD but wait immortal cant die...)

On that day I'll most likely be Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji.

Forgot to say here that I had to chance Arceus to Joltik because of financial issues. ;) Maybe next year for the God of pokemon world.

List updated! CountMetal, I put you down for Saturday for now, but you can switch to Sunday if that works better. You can also participate both days, of course.

We've got a great lineup so far, looks like some awesome battles will be happening! I'm actually worried that I won't be able to see all of them on Saturday, since I'll have to rush off to my panel at 4, but the battles shouldn't take three minutes each, so I don't think that'll be a problem.

Free has never won eather. 1 fight he froze himself with his own attack (just got out of jail for 250 year he was alittle rusty with his magic.

For those of you who have opponents you want to fight, when the list gets to you, you get to choose whether you pick your opponent or go with whoever's next on the list, so don't worry, you can get your foe of choice. I know some of you have gatherings you'll have to get to, so if you're in a hurry, let me know and I'll move up your fight slot.

Also, once Fanime begins, I'll have the list printed out with everyone's names, but people can still sign up at the event. Don't forget to check in with me when you arrive so I know you're here and ready to fight.

On Saturday, look for the guy with a giant watermelon. On Sunday, look for Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It'll be right around the corner from the gatherings by the Hilton side. See you all there!

I think elite will make the pairing the day of its easier so both parties can agree

When your fight comes up, you have two choices: 1. choose your opponent specifically, or 2. fight whoever's next on the list. So when it's your turn to fight, you can choose Ciel, as long as that cosplayer agrees to it.

I'm so glad I was able to make the Sunday one, even though I was late from not being able to find the location. ^^; It was so fun.

I didn't take a lot of pictures, but I did get ones of Vegeta vs. Wolverine, Monarch Henchman vs. Moogle, and Snow Villiers vs. Red Riding Hood.

Glad everyone had a good time! Next year I'll try to set us in a location that's easier to find, or at least walk around with a sign and megaphone before the event starts. Do you guys want to do this two days again, or go back to one day?

@AbsolutelyCursed: I know, normally one competitor goes down, or we decide by applause, but there was some confusion with the applause that time, so I had to call it a draw. Sorry about that. Still was a very cool battle, though.

i say keep to two days again and from here on out its fun doing it that way. also gives people who missed it and or wanted to fight as a diffrent character. Wonderful wonderful. I still don't know when the panel that I want to participate in will be, but hopefully i'll be able to make it both times. How had the "winner" of each fight been chosen in the past?

Normally after three poses, one cosplayer decides, "Okay, I took what would be a nasty hit and this guy's been doing well, I'll take the fall," or "Okay, he's clearly not gonna take the fall, I'll be the bigger man and do it myself" then falls down "defeated." When neither does, then we turn to the audience by applause. If it's too close to call there, it becomes a double knock-out.

Of course, any characters from any series are welcome. You don't have to be from a fighting series, or even be a character who can fight at all. You can be the tiniest character in a comedy series and still take on a super-powerful fighter and win, as long as the poses are right.

Example: Goku (Dragonball Z) vs Chiyo-chan (Azumanga Daioh)
- Goku begins powering up, while Chiyo kicks him in the knee. Freeze for pictures. (Remember, it can look like Chiyo is kicking Goku, but actually hitting the cosplayer is against the rules.)
- Goku fires a Kamehameha, and Chiyo ducks to avoid it. Freeze for pictures.
- Chiyo and Goku charge for one final attack. Freeze for pictures.
- Chiyo-chan wins! Goku lies defeated. Victory pose.
- Goku and Chiyo thank each other for a good, fun match, and the next competitors come up.

Okay, now that gatherings are starting to get their times posted, here's what I'm thinking for the battles:

Saturday at 2:30
Sunday at 1:00

Do these times sound okay? Are there any objections from those who have signed up?

Those are smack dab in the middle of when I need to change cosplays. I might stop by quickly, but I'm afraid that i won't be able to make anything for sure.

Are there any times around then that would work better? Give or take a half hour or so? I haven't finalized anything, since I want to find a time that works best for as many people as possible. If nothing around that time works, since you have signed up, you can let me know when you arrive and we'll get your battle in before you have to go.

I will be sure to stop by sometime in the afternoon, but I'm trying to go to 5 gatherings and 3 panels so what costume I'll be in is going to be unknown. Thanks but don't go out of the way to accommodate me. I'll still show up, and can just wait around for a few minutes for a new challenger.

Alright, folks, the times are set. Sunday was moved up from 1:00 to 12:30 to avoid clashing with another gathering, so we've got Saturday at 2:30 and Sunday at 12:30.

I think I've missed a few posts, so if you've signed up and aren't on the list yet, please let me know and I'll fix that.

No worries, xichi, they don't have to be fighting characters to enter. For example, Velma can run and try to thwack her opponent with a flashlight or book, or Gumi can use sound-based attacks. Half the fun is putting non-fighting characters in combat situations.

Perhaps I will reconsider! :3
