Title: FanimeCon 2012 Speeddating: Official Thread!
Post by: yaki-ika on February 21, 2012, 10:00:25 PM
Hi everyone,

As some may know, Speeddating has been a very successful event at FanimeCon, and we wish to continue the event at FanimeCon 2012!!

Here is what is posted on the website and is up to date:

-----------------

SIGNUPS ARE NOW CLOSED. You will receive a confirmation email if you were submitted. If you don't receive a confirmation email with your date and time slot, you were not submitted into FanimeCon Speed Dating this year. Please try and line up at the doors!

The FanimeCon Speed Dating event is for 18+ SINGLES ONLY who are interested in meeting new people and potentially finding love! This speed dating event will be for boys meeting girls and vice versa. Anyone who is above the age of 18 is eligible. IDs WILL BE CHECKED AT THE DOOR TO VERIFY AGE. PLEASE BRING AN ID THAT INDICATES YOUR BIRTHDAY (passport, drivers license, state id, etc.). THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

Event Places and Times:
All events will be held in the San Carlos Room (Hilton Side, NOT the Marriott side!!).
Friday (5/25): 8PM to 10PM
Saturday (5/26): 2PM to 4PM and 4PM to 6PM
Sunday (5/27): 2PM to 4PM and 4PM to 6PM

HOW THE EVENT WILL WORK:
Upon successful registration, a confirmation email will be sent. Please follow the instructions on the email. And wait for another email from Speed Dating letting you know whether or not you got into the event.
Come to the event with your ID. A piece of paper to take notes on, a pencil, and a checklist with numbers on it will be provided. Each participant will have an identification number.
You will have five minutes to talk to each person. If you feel like you connected with that person, place a check mark next to their number on the checklist. You may check up to three people. If you check more than three, I will not process your sheet and you will get no matches.
YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION, INCLUDING NAME AND AGE.
At the end of the event, you will have a few minutes to finalize your ideas and checkpoints. Please RANK THE PEOPLE YOU'RE INTERESTED IN (with 1 being your top preference). Make sure to turn in the checkpoint/ranking paper in. We will then match all compatible couples accordingly.
NOTE: We will ONLY match people with a mutual interest. Please note that a match is not guaranteed. Once the event is over, we will send your matches to you ASAP VIA EMAIL. If you wish to be notified of possible matches via modality other than email, or NEED to attend on a certain day (because you won't be at the convention on one of the days), please note it in the ADDITIONAL NOTES in your application. We will notify everyone about their potential matches during the convention so you can spend time with your potential partner, if a match is made.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS/COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE POST THEM ON THE FORUMS. DO NOT EMAIL THE ADDRESS GIVEN ABOVE. This is to minimize repeat questions. We will check the forums daily, so expect an answer within 24 hours. You may also post suggestions that we may take into account for following years to come to ensure a fun and safe event that everyone can enjoy.

-------------------------------

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you there!

Jade

Hi Princesskitty18,

All good questions, and thanks for asking them!

- I am currently planning on hosting the event on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Specific times will be posted later (but before sign-ups on May 1st).
- Yes, I am planning on including the LGBT community this year. I'm really excited for this, and I'm glad that I get to make it happen :)
- Plans are still tentative about what nights will be for who, but my staff and I have a pretty good idea. I will let you know as soon as its set in stone.
- As far as the 3min vs 5min thing is concerned, I will be talking with my staff about what they think is the best way to approach this dilemma. I will update you and everyone else as soon as its been decided.

Thanks,

Jade

I am going to be there, though I don't know what day I will be able to check out the speed-dating as I am sure there will be a lot of other things going on during the con.

I wish the best for everyone who goes though and that everyone walk away from it with some new friends and new memories.

Yaki-ika,
I have signed up for the speed dating event by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. However, I never received a confirmation e-mail in return. Is there a way this problem can be corrected?

I chuckled.

We switched to forms this year so that it can automatically send out confirmations (at least i think so? I'll need to double check), and so we can easily control when they start coming in.

I missed it last year because I didn't register in time. Were people there in cosplay last time? I personally wouldn't go in cosplay so I'll change to my regular clothes before I go.

Well, if you can't find a hotel room for yourself, I am sure there would be someone nice enough to share a room so you can't miss the con.
Cause no one should be allowed to miss a con.

I do think they mentioned lbg variants this year. No need to be shy. Everyone is a little shy. Really that's why this is here.

Those are just your preferences and we will try our best to give you those dates/times. However we will contact those who signed up first and tell them their information! Signup spots are limited so we cannot guarantee anything. Best of luck.

Hello clawmaster,

You are welcome to wear what you are most comfortable in! Normal clothes or cosplay is fine either way. We just require, as by convention rules, that you are fully clothed and there is no indecent/inappropriate wear. :)

hi, just wondering if it's possible to go to two of the speed-dating events, or if we're restricted to just one. i.e. i'm bisexual and want to try both the standard speed dating and the lgbt one as well.

If you're talking about after you have registered for the Speed Dating event via Online form, then yes. The Speed Dating staff will contact you with the information you have provided in regards to your Speed Dating day and time if you have a spot. There are no guarantees and we will try our best.

Just a quick question. When will we be getting the e-mail to let us know what days we got scheduled for? Also, I had a problem with signing up because of poor connection and I think I was put down twice for registration since I had two separate confirmation e-mails sent to me. My original days for sign up are Friday and Saturday though.

Did you mean going to FanimeCon or to the Speed Dating Event?

Anyone can sign up and for the people who do not show up from the pre-register list, we will go to the at-con people who waited in line.

However, that's not to encourage people to sign up willy nilly and not be serious about attending.

If you sign-up, we hope you are serious about attending and will try your best to come to this event! However circumstances and emergencies do arise, so we are understanding of that as well.

In conclusion,
PLEASE SIGN UP AND COME TO SPEED DATING! It's a GREAT FUN EVENT and you won't want to miss it! ;)

We are trying our best to incorporate everyone and encourage diversity at FanimeCon :) Non-LGBT days are Friday 8-10PM & Sunday 2-4PM and 4-6PM. You can sign up for Sunday time slots and we will try our best to accommodate you!

We will consider your suggestion for Saturday sessions for non-LGBT attendees next year. Thank you.

I have nothing against LGBT community but did they really need both Saturday time slots? It's the best days of the convention. Sunday, is when it starts dying off.

Like I said, it might just be me, but it would've been nice to have a Saturday for straight people

i personally completely agree with you
i have a lot of plans on sunday because of the black and white ball and i had been plannin on doin the speed dating event on saturday
but then i found out that both saturday slots are for the LGBT community and that kinda put a damper in my plans

it seems to make more sense to have LGBT on both saturday and sunday
since theres two slots per day, then one LGBT one and one straight one on both saturday and sunday seems to make the most sense
im still gonna go on sunday maybe but ill be kinda swamped for time personally

Successful as in that we have matched people with mutual interests before. What happens after that is up to the pair :) We wish you and all our attendees the best of the luck. But most importantly is to HAVE FUN at the Speed Dating Event!

My question: What is delaying the confirmation? Seeing as how people are trying to plan out their days, it becomes a hassle to not know if they're able to go to this event or not which hinders other plans. And I don't think it's a good idea to keep delaying this especially since Fanime begins next week.

We have been working hard to process all the sign-ups and placing people in the event dates to fill all the time slots. We are taking registration sign-ups on a rolling basis and need to finalize the event lists before emailing it officially. Besides being FanimeCon staff, our staff are also full-time students and/or workers, so we appreciate your understanding and patience. We want to thank everyone for their inputs thus far. Speed Dating staff takes your suggestions into consideration as we strive our best to improve the Speed Dating event for everyone's enjoyment.

Conclusively to emphasize, we apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and understand that people are scheduling their time at FanimeCon. We respect that and want to address that we will email everyone ASAP once we finalize it! Thank you  :)

My guess would be that a lot more guys apply than girls, so I'm sure the m/f ratio for applications to speeddating aren't 1:1. What is the process for figuring out who gets to participate, as well as bringing the m/f ratio for participants to 1:1? Are there a certain number of slots to be filled on a first-come-first-served basis? Hypothetically, what if the slots for girls don't fill up completely? Wouldn't that require a reduction in the male slots to maintain 1:1? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just curious about the process of applicant processing, haha.

for sure the ones that signed-up get first come first serve
if there are still open spots, then those who go to the actual event and wait in the line as part of the waitlist are then taken as first come first serve

for example: if you received an email sayin that you were on the waitlist as number like 5, but you were the first one to show up in person at the actual event, you would get in. cuz its based on first-come first-serve on the day of as well

make sense?

So if we applied really early (such as the first day) our odds would be pretty good right? And I'm reading that slots will be limited by the amount of girls who sign up?

that's sorta the case
but in the two years that ive gone to it (and the 2 years that its been around) ive seen fair amounts of girls and boys
to be honest: yes there are more boys than girls that sign up
but if they have a designated number of ppl just in general (which i think in the past has been like 30-ish maybe), ull definitely fill up those spots with girls
unfortunately, its the boys that'll have to be on the waitlist and stuff like that

make sense?

As mentioned, Speed Dating is a 1:1 event. Male to female or m:m or f:f is dependent on the event of the day. But it will be one-on-one for 5 minutes regardless.

We will fill all the slots evenly for the non-LGBT events with an even number of males and females, so hopefully there will be no problem with females not signing up. We will fill all slots, this is a very popular event!

To clarify: There are NO EMAIL WAITLISTS confirmation emails! We will only email you if you received a spot in one of the event time slots. Otherwise, if you did not receive a confirmation email about your date/time slot AND you want to participate, you must wait at-con FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE! :) The classic one-line is a good way to go.

15 slots for each gender for each hetero event.

45 slots for straight dudes, 45 slots for straight ladies.

there is no wait list this year. So if there are any no shows we'll pull from whoever manages to be there hoping to get in.

what about the slots for the LGBT events? The thing is i signed up for all events Friday and Saturday, but if I don't receive an email for a time slot, does that mean I show up on Friday or Saturday to try to get in earlier? (I prefer Saturday though because I have more time that day)
Also, when do we receive an email about a time slot?

There are two events for the LGBT community on Saturday from 2-4PM and 4-6PM. If you signed up for the LGBT events and received a spot, we will email you a confirmation in regards to that.

airanimechiic, if you signed up for Friday and Saturday and DID not receive a conformation email for a specific time slot, then yes, if you wish to participate in the Speed Dating events you should come to get in line at-con. We recommend you come before the actual start times of 2PM and 4PM to increase your chances of participating in the event if you are waiting at-con. If you prefer Saturday, then please come earlier than 2pm or 4pm to try to get in.

Emails will be sent out ASAP and we cannot give a designated date. But as mentioned, we do respect everyone's concerns and are working on emailing confirmations asap. Any further similar questions of "when will the email be sent out?" will be directed to my many variety of responses.

  • It's FanimeCon Day already, and I did not receive a confirmation email...Why?: Due to the popularity of our event, our online registration sign-ups are first-come, first-served basis since May 1st. Chances are that we were unable to place you in one of our Speed Dating events due to the volume of registration requests.

I realize that the letters haven't been sent out yet, but to save us the trouble of possibly waiting until Day One, can it please be notified on the forum when the confirmation e-mails get officially sent out?

Hello,

As Speed Dating head, I apologize for the last minute confirmation. I wanted to wait as long as possible to give as many people a chance to submit their application, but did not think of how it may affect an attendee's scheduling. I will definitely keep this in mind for next year :) Your feedback is always appreciated. Thank you for being so patient with me and my lovely staff!

I honestly don't remember if I did register because I'm looking through my e-mail and I did not receive an acknowledgment e-mail. However, one of the posters who copy-and-pasted the format of the application form reminded me that I filled it out while I was at work. I didn't want to wait in any lines during my last (and 1st) visit to Fanime-Con, but this was definitely one of the things I was looking forward to the most. It's not going to be a beautiful start if I didn't get in.

Hello everyone,

I'm glad to see that some people are getting their confirmation emails :)

However, it looks like some people are missing their emails. First, let me say that there was an OVERWHELMING amount of applicants this year. Even if you signed up on May 1st (when sign-ups began), you are not guaranteed a spot. We are looking to expand next year to help with this problem.

Also, please make sure to check your spam filter. My confirmation emails have been known to get caught by spam filters and therefore caused some grief for attendees. Definitely check that out before you assume you didn't get anything.

Lastly, some people signed up via email this year even when the forums and website made clear that sign-ups were closed. I only opened up the sign-ups on May 1st through a form. I know that emailing the speed dating email address was what was used last year, but we used a form this year. So if you signed up way ahead of time by emailing me, your application was not considered.

I sent out all the confirmation emails tonight, so you should be getting them very soon (if not already).

Remember: even if you didn't get in, you should still try and line up! There are always no-shows and latebirds :) I'm quite picky about punctuality, so if a registered person is more than 5 minutes late, their spot will be revoked.

Please continue to post your concerns on the forums :) I'm always happy to help!

Thanks,

Jade

When completing the form when it was available on May 1st, the applicant should have been able to receive an acknowledgment e-mail? If I didn't receive an acknowledgment e-mail, I wouldn't be able to receive an confirmation?

So from what I gathered from this thread, all heterosexual, male spots were filled on May 1st? Because I didn't get my confirmation, and I signed up late-ish that day (since you said signing up on 5/1 didn't guarantee a spot, I'm assuming this was the case.)

We are just stating that if you signed up on 5/1/12 it may or may not have placed you in a time slot. The initial acknowledgment email that you registered should have been automatic.

Perhaps people clear their Spam folders and it got Trashed? We cannot account for your email actions.

If you signed up later that day, you may or may not have gotten a spot also depending on what time/dates you wanted. We have no guarantees for anyone regardless of their gender or sexual preferences.

Please check your spam and email by tomorrow morning to see if you received a confirmation email. For registration, we take a first-come, first-served basis for requests based on your preferences. We, the Staff, strive diligently to make the process as fair as possible and enjoyable for all. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best of luck!

as far as my past experience is concerned, you will be sitting
and then either the females will stay seated and the males move, or vica versa

Yes you are sitting and for the non-LBGT, gentlemen are going to rotate around. For LBGT, we are going to just pick a side to rotate.

Anyone may wear their cosplay, but forewarn to be cautious about space! You may take parts of your costume off while speed dating. It is entirely up to you and your comfortableness.

Hello ohaves,

Unfortunately after we place you in a time slot and email confirmations, we cannot switch time slots around for anyone. This is to ensure the fairness for everyone who has registered and honor their requests. If registered people happen to be late or no-shows for any day, their spot goes to at-con attendees who waited in line. Best of luck and hope that everything works out for you!

Please direct all inquiries about other events in their appropriate thread forums. This thread forum is specifically for Speed Dating, and we do not compare events based on "fun-ness." All FanimeCon Staff have worked hard to prepare their events and all events are fun regardless. Apologies to those who were not placed in a time slot and we understand your concerns in terms of participation, but if you're really curious and enthusiastic about Speed Dating still, we recommend you wait at-con! We hope to expand Speed Dating next year as well to accommodate the high volume of requests for our event. Please keep supporting us and giving us your feedback! We appreciate it :)

Thank you and I understand completely. I figured switching was a long shot, haha. Also, based on previous speed dating events, what would be the best time to line up at the con to hopefully score a spot in the event? My friend is still interested in coming on Friday, so he would like to try his chances at the lines.

Also, based on previous speed dating events, what would be the best time to line up at the con to hopefully score a spot in the event? My friend is still interested in coming on Friday, so he would like to try his chances at the lines.

Based on previous Speed Dating events (not an official recommendation from Speed Dating staff), attendees lined up as early as 1 hour before the event and some have gotten in. However, Friday does seem to be our most popular event thus far. There is big anticipation for our first Speed Dating event!

Ah, okay then. We were planning on an hour or so early, so that works out. Thanks so much for your help!

Myself and a couple of other convention attendees have a question regarding the slotting for the Speed Dating event, and we'd like a straight answer, if we could have one please.

What influence, if any, did an applicants age have to do with their being slotted?

Thank you kindly in advance.

Hello Chronopunk,

For this year's Speed Dating event, age did not have any influence in applicants' placement for the time slots. As reiterated it is first-come, first-served based on your preferences of dates and times. Good luck!

Interesting, thank you. I know that I got my app in on the 2nd, but the people reading this over my shoulder both claim they got theirs in on the 1st. Fast enough, they surmise, that it makes them wonder why a FCFS slotting wouldn't have included them.

I'll prod them to check their actual sign up times again, to make sure.

Is it possible to give us an idea how many applicants actually submitted themselves for each slot? Thanks!

Even on the first day, as mentioned by our Head, we had an overwhelming number of requests and placement was based by preferences of date and times. The first guys/girls who signed up for the specific time slots received the spot, and all your registration goes to our database which was thoroughly sorted by our Staff. We can reassure everyone that our Staff looked at all the Registrations to make sure that there were no repeats or nonsensical registrations.

Just be reassured that we, the Staff, have thoroughly looked through the registration to make the process as fair as possible. We are aware of factors that might account into an attendee's placement. It could be that your friends signed up for a very popular time slot and it was already filled up. We are very busy right now with Fanime being two days away and cannot accommodate all requests in regards to Registration logistics. We hope you understand our position. We rather dedicate the little time to making Speed Dating awesome! If you and your friends want to wait, then we welcome you to stop by our event. Friday seems to be very popular and exciting due to our first grand opening. So you can stop by Friday, Saturday, or Sunday if you want! Thank you.

I have a question, has all the emails for the preregistration for the speed dating been sent out? And if so, is there anyway to get a resubmission of said email? I may have not gotten it or it some how got deleted from my spam folder.

I dont think im getting one either because I signed up 5/1 sometime in the evening. Unless it was in my spam folder but I doubt it. Who was the name of the sender?
Please check your spam folder cuz that's where I found mine

I checked, didn't see any but I'm still worried that I missed it and deleted it on accident since i get alot of spam on my email account. But I'm sure I didn't get in anyway since I saw a few others posted that they didn't get an email for a spot and they registered late in the evening.
I'm upset that I will have to wait in line again because I did last year and still didn't get in. I got there 30 mins before it started so this year I'll try 1 hour before it starts.   :(

That is not what it means. Slot confirmations were sent out last night. If you did not receive anything last night, you did not get in.

As mentioned, all Confirmation Emails with registered attendee's specific times and dates have been sent out LAST NIGHT. If you did not receive a separate email last night confirming your SPECIFIC time and date, then all our spots have been filled up and we could not place you in a time slot. We place attendees in time slots based on preferences for date and times on a first-come, first-served basis. We never stated that there were a lot of seats left. Actually to the contrary, we kept saying that this is a popular event with an overwhelming amount of requests. Hoping to expand next year with your supports!

If you think you received a confirmation email last night but missed it, please check your Spam folder and Trash folder. If you deleted it, it should still exist in your Trash folder or somewhere in your email (unless you completely wiped out your email).

We encourage you all to still drop by our Speed Dating events and wait in line if you're really gun-ho about it! Best of luck :)

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your courteous updates if you received a confirmation email for a specific time slot but cannot make it. If you cannot make it, then do not fret. We will just mark you down as a no-show and give your spot to an at-con attendee waiting in line. No need to formally tell us, we will take care of it!

There will be no-shows and late birds! So stop by and get in-line EARLY for Speed Dating if you did not get a specific time slot!

There was suppose to be another email that said that you were confirmed for that day. The one you got was simply saying that they received your request for that day.

To clarify: If you received a confirmed Congratulatory email, we specifically told attendees to come 10 minutes prior to their event (ex. come 1:50PM, if the event started at 2PM). Any attendee who received a specific time slot was granted participation in ONE Speed Dating events. We did not allow someone to register and receive a time slot for all Speed Dating days. During FanimeCon, we had many attendees wait prior to the event, and daily, we would even wait until 5 minutes after the hour to ensure all confirmed pre-registered attendees got in first. Which probably means that you could have arrived after 5-10 minutes of the hour and forfeited your spot. We, the Staff, try to be very punctual and professional to ensure fairness for all attendees.

Well, I presume they weren't drawing names from a hat, and had some method of evaluating the applications.  I'm wondering if perhaps people were excluded for being "too old."  I notice my question hasn't been addressed yet.

To those that were involved in the selection process for the speed dating:  What was the age of the oldest person you selected?

Selection Process?

Well, I presume they weren't drawing names from a hat, and had some method of evaluating the applications.  I'm wondering if perhaps people were excluded for being "too old."  I notice my question hasn't been addressed yet.

We did not "evaluate" the applications on any individual basis. As reiterated throughout the thread, we processed attendee's applications on a first-come, first-serve basis. Whoever sign up first for the specific time slots were confirmed attendees for the Speed Dating events and we specifically emailed them their date/time slot information.

No one was excluded in any way based on their individual information. All attendees however had to be 18+ years old with proper government, picture ID at the event. We had attendees from all ages from 18+ and even people who were 30+.

For the attendees who participated, they are in no way obligated to answer your question about the age of their matches, f.y.i. It's their choice to state on the forums publicly. But to answer your question about age exclusions, No.

There were NO attendees under 18 years old. This is exclusively a 18+ years old event. All participants were required to have FanimeCon badge and proper government-issued picture ID. We do not encourage nor allow minors to participate in Speed Dating at all. No exceptions. We checked everyone in and we had a good range of ages!

Please refrain from making incorrect statements or speculations without first researching this thread or our website. Thank you!

hey for an input why not ACTUALLY let in the people who pre-reg to actually get in before the at-door people? My friend was complaining ALL weekend that he wanted to meet girls but wasn't attending cause he couldn't get in cause seats were filled by walk-ins? Like the badge lines you should let them in first before the rest yes?

My friend was complaining ALL weekend that he wanted to meet girls but wasn't attending cause he couldn't get in cause seats were filled by walk-ins? To clarify again: FanimeCon attendees could sign-up for Speed Dating Event starting May 1st via FanimeCon Speed Dating online forms. Everyone who signed up online was automatically sent an initial email stating that we have received your online form. Secondly before FanimeCon started, the attendees who signed up online on a first-come, first-serve basis were placed in specific time slots. We, the Speed Dating Staff, personally emailed the attendees who received a specific time slot. Meaning if you or your friend did not receive a Congratulatory Email from us stating your specific time slot, it means that you did not receive a spot.

Hence afterwards, if you did not receive a spot, then we recommended all attendees through the forums and website to wait at-con early if you still wanted to participate in Speed Dating. The "walk-ins" you saw could have been attendees who registered just like you and your friend but did not receive a specific time slot either and wanted to wait early.

During the event, we did let the Congratulatory, confirmed attendees in first, then we took at-con waiters. We are always looking to improve and appreciate the feedback. Next year, we will send out Congratulatory emails and emails stating whether or not you received a spot to avoid confusion.

However if you really wanted to participate, then please check the thread/forums and website for more details. As we, the Staff, have repeatedly explained the process on the forums and website. Not sure if I can repeat or make this any more clear... We have a limited amount of spots and regrettably cannot take in everyone. Honestly, this is FanimeCon. There are people everywhere that your friend can meet and we encourage for attendees who don't participate in the event or for the ones who do and don't get matches- to just meet new people on the floor! Speed Dating is a fun event and we're not here to find people their soulmates. Thank you!

We definitely will! Thanks for the feedback and understanding :) We do recognize that there were some confusion about the process and need for clarification about signing up online vs receiving a specific time slot for participation.

Glad you had a great time, and we promise we will expand next year! Count on either more Speed Dating events or a bigger room to accommodate attendees. Remember everyone, the more SUPPORT and constructive FEEDBACK we get, FanimeCon will see the need to continually expand Speed Dating!!! We will announce a way to receive Feedback from attendees, but for now, please keep posting your Feedback here. THANKS!  :D

I actually had one concern... is there a way to have a like a speed dating slot where people who are single only meet people who are single as well? Cause I heard that there were a few people, male and female, that went to the speed dating event who were in relationships already.
So like, have some of the speed dating things for people who just want to make new friends and another for those who are looking to hook up/find love?

Well that's what we did in terms of pre registration, but i mean it's impossible for us to really enforce, moreso with walk ins.

Name?  Okay, now lemme just facebook your relationships status really quick.

I am an advocate for Speed-Friending next year, as people seem interested in that, but only time can tell on that one.

Also, it should be noted, that some people might be in relationships and trying to find someone better than their current partner. :Teach:

This does ruin the whole main intent on speeddating. It's almost like giving the other person a false sense of hope, only for a possible outcome of... oh jk I was already with someone. Hope this is not the extreme case.

yea it defeats the purpose of speeddating. Will expanding the event help though? Were there enough ladies signed up this year that there were ladies who didnt make it into the event?

enough for maybe one or two more, basically by making two each day and taking out one of the LGBT ones (since we only had about enough for one full group of each, we ended up with two half groups.)

Honestly a chunk of the people who signed up and got in didn't show up at all for the event.

For curious people to know, we had over 400 online sign-ups and Friday had an at-con wait line of over 80 people! That is amazing! We will definitely expand in a way that is paced with FanimeCon's support to ensure a fair number of attendees can participate. This year, we had more than enough ladies for each of our non-LGBT events. For the LGBT events, we are looking ways to incorporate more participation as well.

If you have any suggestions for us, that'd be great and much appreciated! Thank you.

enough for maybe one or two more, basically by making two each day and taking out one of the LGBT ones (since we only had about enough for one full group of each, we ended up with two half groups.)

Honestly 50% of the people who signed up and got in didn't show up at all for the event.

in regards to the not enough LGBT participants, i think that may be related to the fact that not enough people knew about it. i mean, even on the day of the con, a good portion of people didn't even know saturday was for LGBT. not to mention the entertaining "extremely beta" announcement you guys made xD
personally, i think having 3 events each day would fit more? or split into two rooms and have two events going on at the same time?

Well it's more that we were technically full for all the events, so we saw no need to really advertise. We didn't expect as many no shows as we got. I mean it would be fine and dandy to have that many events, but it also would require a growth period to be effective. I mean we tried jumping straight to 2 lgbt events and ended up with only 4 people for a 15 person event.  I mean, things could be vastly different next year, bit personally I'd rather see one full event where everyone has a great time and a couple people don't get in, than two or more events that only have someone meeting less than a handful of people.

But at this point all that I say is basically opinions.

Well I guess this counts as a half success story in which I did match with someone and, although we don't live anywhere close enough to actually date in person, we still keep in touch online.

Just an idea:

Since speed dating has become so popular that the demand is about 4 time greater than the supply of seat. Would it be possible to create a singles mixer? Attendants would still have to sign up, receive a time slot, and show their id to prove that they are 18 years old to attend this event. This would allow more people to participate in the event and still have the assurance that they are talking to someone that is 18 and looking to find someone.

That is only really the case in males, most females got in.

If a mixer were done in the same way, you'd basically have about 4:1 ratio of dudes to ladies.

I still saw about 5-10 females that were turned away during one of the event.

True, a mixer would most likely have a higher males to females ratio, but the event coordinators could cap it off once the event hit a ratio of (X) male to (X) females. The ratio would not be any different than a normal club on a Friday night. You also know that they like anime to some extent which is rare to find in every day encounters (at least for me). A mixer would change the dynamics of the event to where people will have to uses their social skills to start conversations will people. I think this type of format would have a greater chance for Fanime attendees (depending on how large the room is) to participate in this type of event than a speed dating room with 20 male and female participants.

Maybe they could have both mixers and speed dating for Fanime to relieve some of the demand from this event.

5 girls were turned away versus about 50 dudes. Honestly, the smart move would just be to convert one of the lgbt events on saturday to hetero and add another hetero on friday. I doubt there would be more females than that.

Plus any dudes who would do well at a mixer would do well at any point in the con, speed dating tends to offer better chances for less conventional individuals.

Speed Dating has recently started up few years ago. We are still improving on our current event!

There are events such as Kayog has mentioned...they are all the FanimeCon dances, BW ball, interactive panels, the hallways, etc...FanimeCon is basically one big "mixer" for everyone! I do not think it is necessary to facilitate that kind of environment when FanimeCon is THE opportunity to meet and greet new people in a comforting, fun event. We like to add something new and unique to FanimeCon, which is the Speed Dating event. But other general ideas such as that is just up to the individual to put themselves out there. Even if we held mixers such as that, there is no guarantee you'd find a match or be willing to put yourself out there at that moment. Thanks for the feedback though! We appreciate it and wanted to provide an explanation why we aren't putting on other different kinds of events since SD staff is confident that FanimeCon can work its magic if you let it ;D

Hi Sailorsam,
