The rovers staff is a great way to see lots of the the con area and an awesome way to meet new friends and like minded folks. If you care about the ongoings of the convention and are interested, please email

Personally, I prefer Rovers...
Anything else just doesn't have the right 'ring' to it.

me thinks there will be a symbol in the form of an 'R' popping up sometime soon, lol.
at this point we might as well have a contest on who could come up with best new name...
as for the Symbol, im sure the art/marketing department will have fun with that one.
old habits/names...
live free or die hard...
yah yah lame movie pun. :P
I might sign up for Roverdom.....
I'll think it over, i've been trying to think of a way to get more involved....
Newb Question Alert!
So I never bothered looking into what goes on in the background of Fanime (or any con), so what does a Rover do exactly? Heh. ??? I'm looking to work staff '08 and not sure where to look, so asking questions seems to be the best start.
My email didn't get sent to the address it came back, nya....

The group is responsible for
line control - make sure lines flow, not congested, not blocking walkways, exits, etc
crowd control - make sure crowds do not get rowdy, don't block things, etc
access control - ID check for the 18+ rooms, authorized personnel
for certain things (to be defined later)
general physical safety - no running; no glomping; no blocking doors,
stairs, fire extinguisher, fire alarms; etc
escort duties - escort staff, attendees, or GoH as needed (requested)
patrol dealer's hall - walk the dealer's hall, a presence helps to deter shoplifting;
keep traffic flowing
policy compliance - weapons policy, etc
assisting with emergencies - verifying emergency, calling it in, control crowd
harassment complaints
missing persons
lost and found - new for '08
One thing to note on emergencies, we do not provide any emergency services. We verify, call it in, control the crowd, and wait for emergency services - Police, Fire, EMS.

If any of you are trying to get in touch with the department head for volunteer opportunities and can't get through on e-mail, PM me your contact info and I'll go ahead and forward it myself. The more people we have to help out the smoother things go since, as the old department name suggests, we really need a lot of bodies out there roving about.
So don't let a bounced e-mail discourage you!
Many thanks for clarification. I'll definitely think about it. I'm not sure where I would fit best so I'm still scouting what's out there.
I'ev thought it over and I think this is the year I start volunteering (always knew i'd end up doing it), so i'll try sending another email in case I messed it up somehow and if that doesn't work i'll PM you the info.
Hi! I'd like to be in Rovers this year, too! x3 *did Video Programming last year* I'll go ahead and e-mail the address; see if it works. . .
Second time's the charm, my email got sent and i've already received a reply. I don't know why in the world it didn't go through the first time, but it's safe to say that the address is fine. If you have trouble with it just send it once more.
If you have trouble with
[email protected], please try
[email protected]One of those should go through and you'll get a reply ASAP. Thanks! ;D
Well I am throwing my two cents in... I figure the rovers are kind of like the ones making sure all goes well. Would even be a good bet to call them Guardians. Always out there always looking out for trouble or of any in need. ^.^
Also got a message from Daniel that he was gonna get me in touch with someone who was a department head cause Yes like alot of us that want to give back to Fanime I wanna be a rover as well. [ Yes I am crazy so why not hehe]
Course have not heard anything and I even went as far as sending e-mail to both addys from an entirely different computer. O.O Soooooo can be reached at
[email protected] And if I may be so bold Long Live FANIME! HoooYaaaaah!!
At the meeting some people were saying they were getting a lot of spam and started ignoring some emails that didn't have something rover related in the topic. So if no one's contacted you yet and you didn't have anything in the topic try again maybe.
Hi folks,
I have replied to every email that I have received in regards to joining the Safety (Rovers) team. If you have not received an email as of today, feel free to PM me here. For our records though, please resend an email to the rovers@fanime OR safety@fanime after we have made contact on here. Thanks!!!! ;D

Update: Actually, jr. rovers(now safety) is supposedly full. It's mostly 18+ from here on out.
Applied ^_^ Hope to join up soon.
This is Krista, one of the Rovers from last year. I was on the mailing list until somewhere around January and I didn't hear a word about the Feb. meeting that I thought was happening. I've send email to the fanime safety address and never heard back.
Is there another step I can take to make sure I'm informed about the going-ons for prospective saftey staff?
All the emails that we have received have had a reply sent to them. We are also sending out apps for folks to fill out and return. If you have sent an email to rovers or safety @ fanime in the past 3 weeks and have not gotten a reply, please PM me here and I will make sure you are taken care of.
Is Derek still in charge or should i change his status from Mighty Leader back to Cool Dude? I even sent email to him directly in January. Thank you for watching out for the cases like me where things get all fubar. I PMed you as well.
Derek is still the H.M.I.C I'm just his 2nd this year. I'll shoot you a PM w/ the staff info goodies tonight ^_^
PS - I messaged you on OB
Should I send another email to get the App. or Pm or wait?

Holy cow, someone from Rovers/Safety actually bothered to make an application? lol jk
Boy am I behind the times XDD...
Hm so I have to admit Im a total newb to the whole con scene, this year will be my first one, but I am considering working staff or volunteer just to get to see everything, including behind the scenes. I was considering being a rover and wanted to know what your guys input is, should I apply or maybe do a different department, or should I just go this year as a visitor just to get the feel before I volunteer/apply?
I would suggest since its your first time to just come as a visitor, then think about it for next year

One of the Staff requirements is that you do a minimum of 24 hours throughout the con. That doesn't leave you enough time to enjoy a lot of the con that you would want to when you're on staff. You see a lot more aspects in con life as an attendee that you normally wouldn't see while on staff. But that's from me out of my own experience.
Rovers/Safety-On-Site can be lenient on the rule sometimes since it's mostly centered towards appropriate coverage in all at-con situations and the department has a high demand for staff(not always leaving room for everyone to complete an equally full 24 hours). There's also the SOS Hierarchy to consider since only a select number of Safety staff are authorized to pull badges and have more access to certain areas of the con. Those people with the power may be needed more than others for that reason. IMO, I think that's why the 24 hour minimum rule was established.
Honestly, you see a lot of the con life that you don't see as an attendee as a Rover. I attended for several years before roverdom. Or SOSdom now? Meh!
Can't really explain what it is, you just gotta try it. And work 72 hours (almost consecutively) straight like me =D (I crashed Monday). It's really that fun.
lol, I was probably speaking from my own experience while staffing for Stamp Rally and not so much on Safety.
Nonetheless, con life perspectives vary from person-to-person regardless of badge status :3.
I'm happy to say I'm offically on staff. One thing though, Is the only meet time for the meetings 6pm? That's a bit late for me since I'll have to take the bus to BART and BART to Dublin then drive home.

The meeting times are set. It'll only be on those days listed in the email @ 6pm. Alot of folks from the east bay (Concord, WC, P Hill, etc) carpool down to the south bay for the meetings. That might be a solution for you. You'll get to the meetings and get to know the folks you'll be working with!
It's win-win ^_^
diaf monkey face.
whoops, wrong board tab. bloody opera.

::cough cough:: ahem
I mean, JOIN SAFETY ON SITE!!!
You ask for Sauce? I give you SoS.
For Zog has spoken.
Come to the dark side...of the con.
Yeah we have cookies!
WE DO!? Why was I not informed about the cookies...
Are they a lie like the pie!?!?!?

Sadly no one else informed me of the mysterious cookies as well.... hehe...
Nice to see everyone at the meeting... Hopefully I can get to the next one!!!! *crosses fingers*
so just out of curiosity, anybody have any sweet/wild rover stories, like having to take down a wanna be sephiroth gone wild? ;D
Well there are some interesting ones.
Some which we won't mention (William, Capt Bob) or go into details.
We have some weird late night early morning 3 a.m. stories about sleepers...and where they sleep.
Old men and their yaoi...yea...a couple of those
Hentai room...Video Room...etc...shenanigans.
No take downs, we aren't really allowed to take down people. We call SJPD for that task. Defending yourself is another thing.
Speaking of Sauce(SoS), I say we require all SOS staff to carry some kind of Sauce with them while on Duty(in addition to the traditional rover gear). lol jk.
Now if it was La Victoria sauce, that probably wouldn't work because unfortunately, someone whose name begins with an A and ends with an N would probably hoard it for himself/herself for his/her burritos and will not share it(even if someone volunteers to "Yaoi for Yuri") because he/she is selfish like that and will probably get his/her badge pulled because he/she stole Derek's burrito sauce while he wasn't looking.
the Group previously known as Rovers is now the "Sauce of Fanime"
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2484835739
Now with new enhanced flavors!
Chocolate Bear - Melts in your Mouth.
Zog - Awesome Charisma you can taste.
Steve Young - Tonsile hockey? Try Football Tackle.
We will have cookies at the 27th meeting. If not, i'll make a point to bring them. and maybe even cakes - hostess cakes! FTW.
Free back/shoulder rubs from the guy from who's awesome at them. ;)
Just take a number or get in line, or just walk up to me and point at shoulders.
Clothing is optinional, but then again... when in Rome...
We'll tell you about our Bra Sale joke... just go to the meeting. to find out more.
Rule #1 of Sauce.
We do not talk about where the Sauce comes from.
Trade Secret. Join us to find out more.
Rule #2 of Sauce.
What ever happens at Yaoi-con stays at Yaoi-con.
(unless he follows you home on a leash- Good Boy.)
Rule #3 of Sauce.
We DONT talk about Fight Club.
No Exceptions.

I was actually talking to someone about this last meeting. I will be bringing loads of bake goods for fanime for us to enjoy. Yay for baking :D
And when did we become Sauce? As long as is good Sauce then its all good for me
I am already famed for my baked goods, I usually bring them to general meetings when requested. I would gladly bring some sort of baked goodness (cookie or otherwise) to an S.O.S. meeting if someone has a specific request. "Bake cookies!" is not a valid request, I have too many recipes and I would get a headache trying to select one.
Mr. Wendell is fond of my White Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies

and we're having a meeting on Sunday 27th.
You technically need a referral, but feel free to ask us any questions here.
It is encouraged (Due to the fact that Staff usually assumes you know a little bit about how the con works), but like most things in life you can be trained to do the job =P

That's correct. Our current road warrior title goes to a crew member from Placerville >.< (until one of our vets moves to Japan)
We do have a few carpools that happen. I happen to run one of them. And yes all you need is one meeting to be in the clear. I would suggest the one coming up in fact.
Placerville indeed. ^.^ *points to self* In case no one knows where the heck that is, its near Lake Tahoe on Highway 50.
Okay enough of that.... Why is this next meeting so important? If I can't make it, am I missing out on something super 'uber important?
and why in gods name am i still not getting the emails saying where everything is? this upcoming sunday, at the batcave. . . I'll be there.
Did you get your staff invite code?
yeah, i'm on the staff list just not getting the emails. with updates, otherwise, you know i'd have been at the last few meetings. Grr, it's just getting frustrating
well next meeting is this Sunday. I'll have to shoot you the location as soon as I get it
Just an FYI
There are quite a few people who have not fully signed up on the staff list and are still in the PENDING status. The cut off is coming up in just a few DAYS. If you are in PENDING status at that time you will be DELETED and officially NOT on SOS staff. At that time I will also lock this thread in order to avoid the "I didn't know please add me to your 1337 cul...er... group!"
