After a weekend long binge of Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, a long since buried memory of the plague of "Hare Hare Yukai" and "Mottoke! Salior Fuku" dances that dotted the convention landscape was resurfaced like a Mythical Kraken of Astonishingly Catchy, Ear-Worm J-Pop. This lead to the following thought:

"Huh. I wonder if there's a name for that? And if there is, what is going to be this years' latest dance craze that at least 6 groups will be performing at the Masquerade?"

So, help a some-what jaded, Thirty-Something who's fallen out of style with the latest trends out and let's try to guess what will be the latest dance craze for Fanime 2019!

As a guy who usually goes to cons alone (though, coincidentally, not this time) I wholeheartedly approve this! Good luck, ya'll! 👍

Noticed when I searched for TikTok nothing showed up.  Any One Use the App?  I KNOW there are alot of Cosplayers on there!

I have heard this before, but I don't personally use the app. I still don't quite understand the app or it's purpose.

I see that the rules forbid "long metal chains" but what constitutes this?
My costume has a whip that is supposed to have a metal chain.
The end piece of the whip will be made out of plastic.
I want to use a 4 foot or shorter piece of lightweight metal chain like porch swing chain or similar.
Thoughts on whether this will cause problems?

Thank you for your time.

Hmmm...this is tough because I imagine you're going to be having it coiled up for the most part while inside the con, but have it out for meetups/photos, correct?

The easiest way to avoid any potential problems would be to find some plastic chain that can be used instead of metal (something gray or that has a chromed finish, etc). If that's not possible, an alternative that might work is to secure the whip in a coil that can't be taken off easily, like using a clear zip tie that you can cover with a strap or buckle. Something that shows that it's unable to be taken out while inside that's also not too big to be seen. That usually will work. Then again, it also can depend on who is working the peace bonding and what their interpretation of the rules are. 4' of metal chain might not seem long, but I always tend to ere on the side of "If you have to ask, it's probably not allowed". But that's just me.

Good Luck!

P.s....I'm going to take a guess. Castlevania?

Gaming / Mobile Games on your Mobile!?!
April 28, 2019, 06:24:54 AM
With the advent of better and faster smartphones, a lot of us have access to a variety of gaming options, right at our fingertips!

From international sensations like Pokémon Go and Angry Birds to import titles like Fate G/O and AzurLane, the amount of mindless time wasters at our disposal grows larger every day!

What are you playing on your phone? Anything you'd like to suggest to others?

Absolutely!  As long as I attend FanimeCon, I plan on hosting the Old School gathering.  Since taking on hosting duties four years ago, honestly it just has been getting better ever year.  Nothing at Fanime means as much to me, as if it wasn't for attending this gathering years ago I probably would have never began cosplaying.

That is so cool! I'll see you guys there!

I got the same vibes yes, though I am sure it also has to do with the con just growing in size due to the increased attendance every year. It is understandable too, but I also agree it seems a bit overkill. Smaller events should be what is being hosted over there. I guess it will be interesting to see how it turns out at least though.

Agreed! Who knows? Maybe it will turn out pretty well and it'll run smoothly. We can only hope for the best, I suppose.

Did anyone get the feeling this plan is an attempt to phase out the 18+ material in general?  I mean, I get that the staff want to try and separate the all ages stuff and the "adults only" stuff, but sending it all the way out to the Doubletree just seems like a death sentence. Why couldn't they have hosted this stuff over at the Fairmont or somewhere more local to the Convention Center, I wonder?

One of the things I've always liked about the Fanime Dealers Hall is the great balance of different shops and merchandise available.

In the past, I've kinda focused on only manga and anime gets here and there. This year, I'm all about figures!!! Specifically I'm hoping to find:

Schwi - No Game/No Life 0 (The one with Her in the sweatshirt. Not the half naked one!)
Ruby Rose - RWBY (The Di Molto Bene Version)
Bakugou - BNHA (The ARTFX Figure)
Yuki Nagato - Haruhi Suzumiya-verse (Specifically from the Disappearance Timeline because...so cute!)
And anything else that pops up and is in my wheelhouse of likes!...and Pocky...way more Pocky than usual!

So, reviving this because it is a great testament to the fact that there's SO MUCH MORE stuff out there nowadays and as we all get older with adulting and stuff, slowly decreasing amounts of time to watch Anime.

I'm going to keep it down to my Top 5, because I could list stuff all day:

5: Konosuba
4: Re:Zero
3: Golden Kamuy
2: Your Name
1: Yuri on Ice!

Post your lists!!!

General Anime Chat / Re: Anime suggestions
April 25, 2019, 06:28:50 PM
Hmmm. Well, if we're going for the "trapped in a game" sorta vibe, "Btooom!" Sorta fills that role. Its a Battle Royale style anime where players of a popular FPS game (which only uses grenades?) get trapped in a realistic version of the game where the stakes are real!

If you're looking for more of the Isekai sorta route, and your looking for something new, "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" takes a lot of traditional rpg elements and puts them into use in a fantasy world where a middle-aged salaryman, after saving his coworkers life and dying in the process, is reincarnated...as a slime?!?

Really...a lot of Isekai has kinda taken over the genre of the "trapped in a mmorpg" genre, now that I think about it. Lol

Wow, there's already a bunch of great suggestions, already!

I am surprised no one has suggested any Miyazaki titles! I mean, that's what comes to my mind first when I think of cinematic anime movies.

Not very unique, I know, but you can't argue with the results! Lol

This is a wonderous thing and I wish you all the best of luck! BUMP

Happy to see the TAZ gathering come back this year! The Fantasy Costco from last year was AMAZING! Unfortunately, I don't know if I'm going to make it to the gathering this year! 😫 There might be a schedule conflict with another Gathering. But I will be cosplaying Merle throughout the weekend! Hope you guys have fun!

Also, is it weird that I REALLY would love to see more Elementary Cosplay!?! Lol

Be pleasant, have decent hygiene, and have ways to have fun even if alone so you're not completely dependent on others to enjoy a convention.  Those are things you can control.  One has no control over whether another person there is open to making new friends or even if a person is friendly.  Some are, some aren't; it's a numbers game.  And sometimes someone who would be open may not be at the moment they're approached for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with you.  I usually find myself solo and while I feel a traveling companion would make a more fun experience, all other factors being equal; I have no expectation to come out with a new friendship that lasts beyond the closing ceremonies.

^THIS

But in all seriousness, making friends, even as an adult, can be tough. But it's not impossible. It's really all about being polite, friendly, enthusiastic and acting with tact.

Woot! Glad to see the Old-School Meet-Up coming back! It's great to see people coming together to appreciate some of the old classics the best way we can, with Cosplay!

Hopefully, there will be more word on it next week after the weekend is over. The deadline just passed, so there should be some processing time.

Haven't seen anything yet, but I'll keep an eye out. Hoping something will open up closer to the Con...
