I'm still checking with my cohort, but I am going to (tentatively) say for now that there should be no problems with your ribbons, unless they say VOLUNTEER in big bold letters on them =V

**EDIT**

Actually, no. You know what? I changed my mind. Your ribbons are fine, don't worry about it. As long as you're not actively trying to make counterfeit volunteer ribbons (ie making ribbons that say "VOLUNTEER" in big bold letters) then there is no problem. Have fun!

Ideas and Suggestions / ABR locked?
February 10, 2010, 05:25:43 AM
Why was the anime baptist revival thread locked? I think it's a good idea with a lot of potential for humor, and don't see what's so offensive about the core concept. I think the staff overreacted here. I don't see it as a mockery, but as a parody; less like making fun of black people and more like making an anime rap. I admit that there is potential for offense if it's handled poorly, but there's no reason to assume that it would be. Just like there's no reason to assume that an anime rap would have the "N Word" in it.

The only people I can really see being offended at this sort of thing are uptight to begin with. Have you seen some of the other panels we have at this convention? We have a 4chan panel for god's sake, and that's not even the worst of the bunch. Hell, our entire convention already offends people, or am I the only one who's noticed the protestors out front every year?

Honestly, not allowing something like this because it might be offensive is akin to not allowing a yaoi panel because some people are offended by gays. It's all in good fun, guys, lighten up a bit.

Man, this is short notice innit?

So here's the skinny. My roommates flaked on me. I've got nowhere to crash for con.

I am a 25 year old male. Here's a picture if you care. http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/2228/n6533955912266241215.jpg

I don't smoke or do drugs, but I don't mind if you do. I drink very rarely, and I'm not planning on it at all this con so it's not something to be concerned about. Unless you drink and provide the alcohol. I don't steal or go through other people's belongings, I'm not a creep or a jerk, and I don't bite unless asked.

I'm very easygoing and have no problems with anyone of any creed. Female, male, GLBT, black, white, hispanic, asian, or whatever else from whatever culture, it doesn't bother me a bit. We can interact as much or as little as you want; Really all I need is a place where I can keep my stuff and crash when I'm tired. I bathe. If you're interested but have any additional concerns, please feel free to send me a private message. I'll answer most anything!

I am staffing this year, and will coming a day early to help set up. This means I need a room for thursday night, in addition to friday, saturday, and sunday. Do not hold back if you can only keep me for a day or two; ANY assistance is appreciated!

As far as payment is concerned....I regret to say that I don't have very much money. I can't afford to pay. However, I'm not demanding a spot on a bed; I've been doing this for more than ten years now...a blanket, a pillow, and a soft patch of floor is plenty for me. Additionally, I am a certified massage therapist with over 600 hours of training, plus work experience. There are non-monetary benefits to be had. My specialty is foot rubs...

Finally, this part isn't required but it would help quite a bit. I live in Sacramento, and I have a ride to the convention but it's not the best situation and I have no ride home. Any assistance with travel would also be appreciated. Anyone who gives me shelter AND transportation to and from the convention and has enough room in their vehicle for my massage table will get a special treat~

If you can help me AT ALL, please send me a message! Thanks very much! =D

My understanding is that it is a SWAP Meet. If you don't have a spot, you can still take items in and swap for goods or cash with the people who are selling via official spots. You just cant wander around with your crap selling to whoever happens to be careening about. THAT isn't fair to the people who pay for spots.

At least, this has always been my understanding.

*SIGHS*

I remember the days when people would save up their money all year, specifically to buy anime and manga in the Dealer's Hall because that's where the best deals were.

Whatever happened to those days? I miss those days =(

Dealers Room / Re: Will there be pokemon cards?
May 14, 2008, 05:43:32 AM
Ah...ano...please dont encourage the sale of fake products...

Sellers, please remember that the sale of illegal copies of products is against the Swap Meet seller's rules, and may result in your ejection from the event.

http://www.fanime.com/events/swap-meet
• The sale or trade of unlicensed, bootleg, or counterfeit goods is not allowed (e.g. SM, Everanime, Aliors, etc)

Quote from: Jelly SoupIf you want a good idea of prices, check eBay. I once got about 10 different promo cards for $2, simply because he wanted to get rid of them.

This is both a good and bad idea. Ebay can be a good way to get the general feel of the market, but...like you just said. You got a bunch of promo cards for cheap, right? That's an unusually good deal, and may throw off preception of the market. The best idea is to use several different sources (of which ebay is one) to sort of "triangulate" the average current market price. Try googling "pokemon card price" or "pokemon card price guide" and check out a couple different sites.

Pokemon cards should be marked with indicators for common, uncommon, and rare, and if it's a First Edition printing it should have another mark for that too.

As a general rule of thumb, rare cards sell for more than uncommon, and uncommon sell for more than rare. First Edition prints sell for more than their later counterparts, and "holographic" or "foil" cards fetch more as well.

There are always exceptions, of course. A particularly powerful (or otherwise sought after) uncommon or even common can sell for more than a rare that nobody cares about. Some runs of certain cards have errors, and these error cards can be difficult to find, making them desireable to certain collectors.

It's all about supply and demand. The more people there are that want a card in relation to how many of that card there are to go around determines value. On the other hand, you might get lucky and there could be a local guy with a Gardevoir shrine in his basement and he just needs that ONE LAST CARD to complete his collection here's a hundred bucks PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET ME HAVE IT O_O

You never know... =3=.

Incredible Stuff I can Make / Re: I Make RPGs
May 14, 2008, 04:16:25 AM
Neko Machi is decent, but I will forever lament the untimely passing of Magus Martin. Boo hoo ;_;

I've been working on a Naruto RPG off and on for a few years now. I don't have much beyond the general concept, though.

I read through most of your Raspberry Heaven game, it sounds great! Now, I haven't actually played it, but I do have one issue. The way it's all set up makes it sound to me like more time would be spent yutzing with cards setting up each scene than would be actually roleplaying. How does this work in execution?

Ar Tonelico in english? How much would it cost...? And Atelier Iris 1 please

The Swap Meet is thursday and friday nights, and the Dealer's Hall is friday through monday. Exact times should be on the website, but I believe the Dealer's Hall closes at six every day except monday, and the Swap Meet closes at midnight on friday, and earlier on thursday. However, *cues the audience* I AM NOT ON STAFF!! Please don't quote me here. Details are on the website and should be in your con packet you pick up with your badge (possibly in the guide book).

The Swap Meet is pretty much a hodgepodge of whatever people feel like bringing, and there isn't any sort of formatting to what items go where; seats are dished out on a (more or less) first come first served basis. Take a look, shop around, see what you can see. If you get in early I also reccomend coming back later as some sellers leave and new ones come in, and the merchandise rotates.

As for the Dealer's Hall, that's a little trickier. I don't really know what you're talking about, where they're from, or how common/popular they are, so I can't be too specific.

Import figures (and plushies) tend to be in the aisle along the far right wall (as you enter the ballroom, I believe this is east) generally towards the center and back (north side) of the aisle. The far right corner is a good place to start.

For domestic productions, try along the center aisles. You don't see a lot of domestic figures in the Dealer's Hall at fanime in my experience, but it's not something I generally keep an eye out for.

If it's more of a specialty product, I would reccomend the far left side. This is where I consider to be the "specialty goods" area, and where to go if you're looking for stuff like hentai, yaoi, jrock, and gothic lolita stuff (I also call it the "fangirl area" XD) Since it's Death Note, you might find what you're looking for here if you really just cant find it anywhere else; again I reccomend starting from the back and working forward.

Hope this helped some, but remember! The setup shifts from year to year, sometimes very dramatically. It might be NOTHING like how I've said, but this is how I remember it from the last few years.

If I can find it, I'd like to buy Dear You, the Higurashi image album. .....yeah right ~_~

Chrono Cross OST would be nice maybe, if the price is right

Manga. Lots of manga. <3 swap meet. Still looking for that full set of Fushigi Yuugi! I also need more Prince of Tennis and would like to finish off Pita Ten if I can (am I a COMPLETE girl, or what?) We'll see what else catches my eye

Any figures I can find that don't cost too much but don't look like crap.

Let's see let's see...swords are too expensive...posters and wallscrolls are impractical (no place to put them)...maybe a plushie if I can find a cheap one.

I always try to pick up the latest BAAU Down, and at least one or two little somethings from the Artist Colony.

ANYTHING YURI!(!!)

If I have any money left after all that and I'm not starving to death, we'll see what happens XD

General Anime Chat / Re: Dub or Sub? pt 2

To me, it matters what I saw said anime in.

If I see it in Sub my first viewing, than Sub.

If I see it in Dub my first viewing, than Dub.

Of course, If I'm too lazy to wait a week for a new episode on American TV, I'll go watch a sub, and may convert.

I used to say this. But over the years I've come to accept that japanese seiyuu tend to do a better job than american voice actors. These days I watch subs almost exclusively, but there are some dubs that I like (I actually think the Cowboy Bebop dub is BETTER than the sub.)

None yet. Still looking for someone to let me crash with them ;_;

In previous years, though, it's been the marriott. Though last year we were at the one across the street from the marriott, the...I dont remember what it's called.

Mental note: bring a hand sanitizer

it gets worse....

http://youtube.com/watch?v=e46bRGsVHM8
heres your hand sanitizer!!

personally, me and my friends bring bottle of water and 2 boxes of Ramune (1box = 32 bottles)
also thanks for the tip about the Glass, that really explains why i felt ill!!!

No, it doesn't. It really, REALLY doesn't. That is circumstantial evidence at the very VERY best. Allow me to draw you a paralell.

Imagine you went to New York, and saw a billboard there. Then, afterwards, someone tells you "Did you know that billboards in New York are sometimes put up by FAIRIES?!" So now you're saying "Well, I *did* see a billboard in New York. It must have also been put up by fairies!!"

There is absolutely no evidence that hotel room glasses have ever given anyone any sort of sickness at Fanime. Ever. None. Zero. Just because it is POSSIBLE that someone somewhere maybe at some time MIGHT have gotten or will get sick does not mean that it is something you need to worry about. Seriously, these are four star hotels. High quality establishments that are carefully regulated by the government and various public and private health organizations. If it were a significant health risk, they wouldn't be allowed to handle it the way they do. Come on, guys. This is the Hilton and the Marriott we're talking about, not some seedy dive in the red light district. You are much much MUCH more likely to get sick just by being at con with all those people than you are to get sick from a cup at one of those hotels. If you're seriously worried about that, I suggest never EVER going outside again, because you have a better chance of being abducted by aliens than you do getting sick from something like that.

I'm ashamed of whoever made such a sensationalist piece of crap. Two words: Irresponsible Journalism

I've been doing this for more than ten years now, and I've been to cons as far away as AX. You guys seem to have the money covered, but I've got one tip for you, and that is to always have some extra money (if you can spare it, not everyone can.)

We call this the "Holy Shit! Fund" and the farther away from con you are, the larger this needs to be. If you're local, you could probably get away with around twenty dollars or so. If you're a couple hours away, you'll want at least 50 to 100. If youre from down south or out of state, $100 to $200 is nice. Sometimes, things dont go according to plan. Sometimes, unexpected things happen. And then you go "Holy shit! I need cash!" This is where the Holy Shit! Fund comes into play. Perhaps gremlins poke holes in your tire and you need to buy a new one. Maybe you lose track of time and miss your train, and you need to buy a new ticket. Maybe the omg BEST. BAND. EVAR. is playing one night only and you NEED to go see them. Maybe your friend gets arrested and you need to post bail. Maybe the roads get closed or the train breaks down and you need cash for another night at the hotel.

Maybe you meet the girl or guy of your dreams and decide to elope.

All of these reasons and more is why we have the Holy Shit! Fund. Have any of them ever happened to me? Nope. Do I still set money aside whenever I have enough to spare? Hell yes. You also have to remember that the unexpected can happen both on the way to the con, at the con itself, and on the way home. I suggest setting aside an amount that you deem appropriate, and keeping that money entirely seperate from your normal money (keep it in a different wallet in a different spot on your person, or even leave it in the hotel room (in a place where the cleaning lady wont think it's for her.)) Dont spend it until monday, and if you can keep at least half of it just in case of emergencies on the way home (sometimes I spend my food money and use the remainder of The Fund for food on the way back XD)

Will you need it? Probably not. But if you don't prepare and you end up wishing you had it, I hope you think of meee~ ^_^

Dealers Room / Swap meet
May 22, 2007, 12:15:17 AM
I had a lot of stuff typed up, but you know what? Here.

http://www.fanime.com/events/swap_meet.html

H stuff is allowed, you just have to cover up any "naughty bits" that are on active display and you cant let minors buy it or browse through it.

The EGL should be fine. But if you made it yourself and you sell them, like, for a living or something, that may be against the "No Dealers" ruleset.

Registration / In bit of a pickle
May 21, 2007, 11:54:59 PM
Im not saying youre wrong. Im just saying you MIGHT not be right. It is very possible that they want the actual person to be there, but if you have someone's physical government ID I would think that it's safe to assume they gave it to you of their own volition. Again, Im not saying youre wrong, but it doesnt hurt to try.
