Hi, I'm Chinese and would like to say something important, and probably bold, on the behalf of the Chinese on the Fanime fourm. PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU SAY CHINA IS A VERY BAD COUNTRY DURING THE OLYMPIC GAMES!!! Even if most of us love China and will support it to death or something, it doesn't mean we will fully support the government or something. It's true that the Chinese government has flaws and whatnot, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world have flaw-free governments. Moreover, when you say something negative about China or its culture, it hurts most of us very deeply. Second, China went through a lot of HELL to even reach its current state. In fact, China had to face European economic takeover (19th Century), war with the Japanese (20th Century), World War II (20th Century), and so many others before it became communist. Now, I am not saying I am pro-communism, but I am actually saying China's government is relatively new and of course has many flaws, just like the early stages of the United States government. So please, first think about the negative comments you wish to say about China first before saying it. Aside from that, you can watch the Olympic games at Fridays at 5AM at Pacific time (GMT -8:00) on CCTV4 live on the link provided. For sure, it would be on it and everything will be live! (Much better than having to wait for NBC or something to start showing it.) Anyway, enjoy the 2008 Olympics and the link I provided!!! XD

Watching all of the documentaries on Beijing's preparations for the Olympics are amazing. What they did to design the stadiums is outstanding. I wish I could be at the Olympics myself to see the new Beijing and their structures. I'm very proud of China and their commitment to set a new benchmark for Olympic preparations. I think they very much earned the status of becoming a global contender in the economical world. I'll be watching the Olympics whenever I can. <3 Banning half the cars in Beijing and shutting down the factories to clean the air for the Olympics? WOW. Outstanding. :D Even the community itself has been preparing to be more welcoming to foreigners. I saw a thing where a taxi driver taught himself basic english so that he can talk a little to people he drives around and help them with suggestions and whatnot. Even if it is a communist country, the people within it are really amazing for putting so much effort into giving China a great public relations image. I wish Americans cared this much. :(

I learned isn't from the glossy magazine-cover streets of downtown Shanghai or Beijing, but from the impoverished former factory worker with both legs shorn off and cauterized, "walking" painfully with his hands down the street. What
I learned is the destitute poverty of a twelve year old boy abandoned in dirty, ragged clothes off the streetside, crying for parents that he won't see again. What
I learned is that the Triad-run black market is thriving more than ever in Hainan, foreign students in Shanghai either go with a bodyguard or risk maiming just to get from home to school, and the Chinese infrastructure's so ineptly scheduled that there are brand-spanking new power plants out there sitting idle for weeks at a time because there isn't enough fuel to go around.
What I see is a US where the main political conflict is
how to help the nation get better. What I see is a China where the main political conflict is whether or not people making less than middle-class wages can even be considered human! The social change in the US is that of democratic process, change brought about by dialogue and general consensus- at local, at regional, at state and at national levels. If things piss us, off, we vote the bastards out of office and tell the other guy that he, too, is expendable. The social change in China is a dozen, a hundred, a thousand small, desperate revolutions trying to get Da Ge to stop fondling its pocketbook for once and pay at least a little attention to them- or at least to tell its regional representatives to stop blatantly abusing their offices for personal gain.
You'd be even more naive than you look if you think for a second that the PRC is treating the Olympics as anything more than an engine of political- and economic- propaganda. Luckily for us that actually cares about the state of the human species, the Great Firewall has proven on more than one occasion that, when information is concerned, all it takes is a single drop to cause a flood.

You really have a negative outlook on China huh? Also, I have been to China probably more than you ever had. I have seen both the good and the bad. Unfortunately, what you only see is the bad aspects of China. Try seeing the good side of China. In addition, I am not naive. I know most of the stuff you have said like the corruption, the criminal activity, etc. going on within China. However, it is only in the recent years where all of this stuff is happening. Only recently is when China is becoming industrialized. Only in the recent years where criminal activity is becoming a problem. Only recently is where population is becoming a problem. In fact, I have seen and lived in Shanghai
BEFORE there were 10+ story buildings and still remember when there where only 5 story buildings at highest. Plus, major cities like Shanghai and Beijing were once very safe before the industrialization. Thus, it is like saying how London and New York was before it industrialized and finally changed to make it safer. I just have 3 pronouncements to make:
1) The implementation of elevated toilets is one of the greatest things ever.
2) I can't watch the Olympics except for short spurts at lunchtime. :( *sadface* well...I guess I'll youtube it later down the line...but it won't be the same. At the very least I wish I could watch the opening ceremony.
3) After much though and consideration, I pretty certain I'm not gay. I'll get back to you on this one.

I don't think it really has anything to do with the olympics...just felt like throwing it out there as I sit here trying to download a 45 and 38 megabyte file on a 14kb/s connection to a computer that keeps running out of memory of all things and killing the download....

You need to give me solid facts, because you're throwing these tidbit factoids with no explanations of their significance to the discussion. free market reforms answer what? private ownership means what? what does this prove? the corporation that owns the factories decided to lose 45 days worth of money for the good of the country? I'm sorry but I have never known modern corporations to do things that cause them to lose over a month's worth of revenue just for the good of the country's image. What political system are they? just running around saying they aren't really communists gives me ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA on what political system you're inferring that they are. So please give me a better reply.

State ownership of industry is supposed to be a communist/socialist kinda thing. A rather important facet of communism in fact. Calling a country communist when it adheres to so many capitalistic principals is...well...uneducated to put it nicely.
If you want to pin a political system on China, I guess you could call it a single party, oligarchical state with bits of socialism mixed in. But take into account that France is more socialist than China and you have an idea just how socialist China is.

Every Olympics I get excited thinking the opening ceremonies are going to be AWESOME. Then every year I find myself thinking...there's got to be something better on TV.
I'm sure it's much more exciting in real life. Heck I admit that I'm impressed by the technology they used. But honestly, I'm just watching to see the American Team come in, then I'm turning the channel.

Finally I got a chance to post on my thread. China's opening is awesome! Thing is, NBC cut out some parts like the after show and all. (It is mostly singers singing and all that after what you see on NBC. I am sad because I am unable to see it.) Plus, DAMN! China is like seriously pwning the United States. Anyway, GO USA/CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

I just checked the medal count. I am completely shocked at the position China is in and the United States is in. It is a very heated battle with them and China leading so far. By the way, here is a link to see the current medal count and whatnot.

U.S. Sports has been in the crapper for quite a few years now. The fact that we still have anything close to Olympic-caliber athletes is... encouraging.
The U.S. Basketball team's utter dominance on the court was a beautiful sight. As well as Women's Fencing's clean sweep of the field.

Something about the Floor Exercises rubs me the wrong way. USA is Bronze, Silver to Japan, and Gold to China, but there was a huge discontinuity in scoring practices. Often more difficult routines that stuck in USA never touched a 16 or higher, whereas the Chinese team did a fairly simple routine comparatively, steps on the dismount, and gets 15.7s or 16s. USA was doing just fine, leading in the halfway rotations.
What's even more disconcerting is that the Chinese Olympians were threatened if they did not get gold, and the Chinese coach was quoted to have said "I'd jump off a building if our team doesn't get gold".
I just think the scores could have been a lot closer than the final showing. With Japan at -7 and USA at -10 differential, in the finals, the competition should have been MUCH closer for medal contention. Just feels like some foul play is afoot :/.

Yeah. I've noticed that some of the scores were pretty iffy. I think that some of judges probably play favorites. >.>;
Especially with the girl teams. D: The Chinese girls were shaking all over the place on some of the routines. Yet they score better.
But as for the men's just getting bronze. I blame the announcers. D: They cursed the American team by bragging that the Americans were the only ones without mistakes. Trouble really did come in threes. -.-;
I'm curious about something. Are host nations allowed to judge?
I noticed during diving that they show you which nations are judging but not for gymnastics.
I saw no China there but I'm just sort of curious.
